Queensland's public housing waitlist has reached a record high with around 55-thousand people now waiting for homes. One family has told the ABC leasing a campsite to live in a tent has meant they're no longer considered 'homeless' and could face a long wait ahead for social housing.

00:18The mother of two pays $680 a fortnight for a powered campsite in Bundaberg.
00:24Weathering storms and the heat, she says her family doesn't qualify for immediate housing assistance.
00:32I'm angry now and upset and heartbroken because it isn't right.
00:37The Department of Housing declined to comment on the couple's case for privacy reasons.
00:42But in a statement said it funded community housing providers to support the homeless.
00:47About $400 million went to 91 organisations this financial year.
00:53The opposition says more is needed.
00:56We're seeing more and more families, which means more and more children living in tents, living in cars, living in the backyard of a friend's place.
01:04And that's simply not good enough.
01:06We have families that come in that are working full time.
01:08We have people that have worked their entire life and now they're on the pension, they're retired.
01:13But they're struggling, they can't afford to go and shop at the big stores.
01:16The latest data shows about 55,000 people were on Queensland's public housing wait list at the end of October.
01:24That's 1,000 more than in August and is a record high.
