00:32The family moved to the free rest area after their lease came to an end.
00:36It makes me feel like a failure as a mum.
00:43It's so, it's hard.
00:46I never thought we would be homeless ever.
00:50See again, that's only one property.
00:52One, yeah, out of all of the places.
00:56They need at least five bedrooms.
00:58Vacancy rates in this area are around 1%.
01:01The family are on a priority list for social housing.
01:04I think I've applied for over 200 private rental properties.
01:08And there's just nothing.
01:10Because we're such a large family, there's nothing.
01:13Kyla West, a youth housing caseworker, says their applications are strong.
01:17But the challenge is their family size.
01:20Honestly, it's heartbreaking to watch, especially coming out here and seeing what they do have to live in.
01:25They have the means and financial capacity to rent a house, but just no one's giving them a go.
01:30So unfortunately, they've just had to set up out here.
01:33Yeah, come out here and eat them darling.
01:36There's a national target to ensure First Nations people live in homes that cater to their household size.
01:40The commitment is not on track to be met.
01:45There are calls for a national plan to specifically help Indigenous people.
01:49The Housing Research Institute Ahuri has found that unless something changes, another 72,000 social houses will be needed just
01:57for First Nations people in the next 20 years.
02:01The New South Wales government plans to deliver 780 new homes by 2031.
02:07The housing minister says a local provider is working around the clock to help the family.
02:11While at a federal level, they've committed $3 billion to support First Nations housing.
02:16For now, the family is focused on a brighter future.
02:20My hope is that we can get a stable home so they can get back into their routine and just
02:26have a normal life.
02:28That's just what I pray for.
