00:02It's fast becoming the favourite subject of students at Beverley District High School.
00:11Australian Sign Language is giving pupils at the Wheatbelt School another way to communicate,
00:17with Auslan being taught as part of the school's curriculum over the past four years.
00:25We had a non-verbal student at the school and I was teaching her some Auslan,
00:31and when the Italian teacher retired, because Italian was our language other than English,
00:39the school asked me if I would like to teach Auslan.
00:42Students from pre-primary through to Year 8 are taking up the language of the deaf.
00:49Staff here at Beverley District High School have seen Auslan classes reignite the joy of learning,
00:56with students sharing their newfound skills both inside and outside the classroom.
01:01I feel they have the best job in the world because the students are so enthusiastic, they want to learn.
01:06The project is also helping students understand the importance of inclusion.
01:11They can take these skill sets as life skills to be able to communicate with all people from all cultures
01:18and all diverse populations.
01:21Those with lived experience hope the rising uptake will lead to better outcomes for the deaf community.
01:27Nine, ten.
01:30To see deaf children learning alongside hearing children and for them to be able to communicate in my language and
01:37my culture,
01:37it's just absolutely fantastic, I love it.
01:40Students now look ahead to sharing the language with others in their town.
01:44Mums, dads and grandparents, the class gathered and sat down on the floor.
01:53Didn't read and sat down on the floor.
01:54Yeah, I know you gave him some genuine power-up chamado phone number and sat down on this one.
