00:00And with training camp just two weeks away,
00:01we're going through position group by position group
00:04to talk about the commanders' position groups,
00:08and today we're doing offensive line.
00:11The big news in the offseason regarding the offensive line
00:15was a two-year, $60 million contract extension with Laramie Tunsil.
00:20Jeremy Fowler, ESPN, has been running these lists
00:22for probably the better part of a week
00:24where they go position group by position group all over the NFL,
00:28and he has coaches and scouts and executives
00:30anonymously vote on who the best are.
00:33Tunsil's the only player that has made a list so far.
00:36I believe he was voted the fifth best tackle in the NFL.
00:42If you can, Dubby, tell me who was ahead of him.
00:45I think fifth best, to me, is fine.
00:48That's the company he keeps is among the best in the NFL.
00:52If you look at the projected starting lineup
00:58for the commanders' offensive line,
01:02going left to right, Laramie Tunsil and left tackle,
01:05there was a pretty big assumption
01:07that Chris Paul would have a relatively robust free agency market.
01:12He didn't.
01:14Washington was able to bring him back on a one-year deal.
01:17Paul started last year for this team,
01:19so let's just operate.
01:21I thought he played well.
01:23I think he played well enough.
01:24Yeah.
01:25I think playing next to Tunsil helps a lot.
01:28I think left to right,
01:31as of July 14th,
01:34we can presume Tunsil,
01:36Chris Paul,
01:37Allegretti at center,
01:39Sam Cosme at right guard,
01:40Josh Connerly at right tackle.
01:42Yeah.
01:43I think there's a lot to like with that group.
01:45If you look at the depth,
01:47you have Brandon Coleman,
01:48who's kind of your little bit of everything.
01:51Matt Goulbin is the kid they drafted out of Michigan State,
01:54so there is another center on the roster.
01:56You have Andrew Wiley,
01:58who could do a little bit of everything for you.
02:00He's been there for a while.
02:01Trent Scott,
02:02probably that swing tackle should you need it.
02:05Take tight end.
02:06I'm blocking tight end.
02:08Good hands on Trent Scott.
02:09Oh, yeah.
02:10Timothy McKay has been on this roster.
02:12Julian Good-Jones has been on this roster.
02:15I like the O-line.
02:17Yeah, I'm comfortable with him.
02:19And I'm also looking for,
02:21like we always talk about the jump,
02:22and we immediately go to skill positions.
02:26Connerly played every game last year.
02:28Every snap.
02:29We saw a jump in him
02:30from beginning of the season to the middle,
02:33from the middle to the end.
02:34I expect to see a major jump with him.
02:39I agree.
02:40He was overwhelmed a little bit early.
02:41Yeah.
02:42But he faced the best of the best.
02:44Yeah.
02:44But all of a sudden,
02:46he didn't have any problems like that anymore.
02:48Agreed.
02:48And then he worked out with Tunsil this offseason,
02:51which that to me,
02:53when you have guys of Tunsil's caliber
02:56on your team that's willing to help our young guys,
02:59that makes your team grow quicker.
03:01I think when you're talking about the offensive line,
03:04the biggest question is the center position.
03:06Tyler Biotish gets released in January,
03:09quickly gets gobbled up by the Chargers.
03:12They bring in Allegretti.
03:14Now, who is the center?
03:15Linderbaum.
03:16It's signed for a billion dollars with the Raiders.
03:19Washington was in on Linderbaum.
03:20I think they would have liked to get him,
03:22but nobody was going to outspend Vegas.
03:24And if you're Vegas,
03:24and you've got a guy like Tom Brady
03:27that understands how to win football games,
03:28run in that operation,
03:29and you know you're about to draft a rookie quarterback,
03:32and you know Linderbaum,
03:33the delta between Linderbaum
03:34and the next best center in the NFL,
03:36fairly significant.
03:37That dude's an absolute stud.
03:39I understand why Vegas went to the top there.
03:45I can wrap my brain around that.
03:47He can make a young quarterback's life easy.
03:50The biggest question with the offensive line,
03:54how comfortable are you with Nick Allegretti?
03:57I'm comfortable.
03:59The reason is,
04:00Nick has been around a long time.
04:03And this is not Nick trying to snap shotgun all the time,
04:08which I think,
04:09be honest with my guy,
04:11but he would be on different spots sometimes.
04:15You're snapping on the center mostly now,
04:18which I think is a damn good thing.
04:20And then Cosby gets back this form.
04:22He's now two years removed from the surgery,
04:24which I think he'll be a stronger player now.
04:27We already know how dense Chris Paul is.
04:30He's going to be moved.
04:32And the two outside guys speaks for themselves.
04:34So I feel comfortable as hell with them going in.
04:37Look,
04:39if you're going to have a center,
04:41the one thing you don't want to have is inexperience.
04:44And Allegretti has a level of experience
04:47that's going to help him as being a veteran
04:49that'll help him out some.
04:53Allegretti's going into his eighth year in the NFL.
04:56Came up with the Chiefs.
04:58Was a seventh rounder with the Chiefs from Illinois.
05:02Played center,
05:04I believe,
05:05at Illinois.
05:07He has talked about how he prefers playing center
05:10and that he did it growing up.
05:15I think,
05:16I don't know,
05:17man,
05:17you don't want to get too caught up in
05:21concern about the center position.
05:23It's obviously super important.
05:25But at the same time,
05:28getting Jaden under center,
05:30like there's just a lot.
05:32I don't have extreme center angst.
05:35We got to see him perform.
05:37I think the people that look at
05:40Biotis,
05:42the team told you what they thought
05:44when they released them.
05:46They didn't think they were getting enough done.
05:48And if you look at like the run game,
05:50I'm not putting anything,
05:51I'm not saying anything was Biotis' fault,
05:53but like
05:55he was the center
05:56and they didn't think it was good enough.
05:59We'll find out if that's correct.
06:02Like there's a number of things
06:03where
06:05we're going to find a lot out
06:06if Adam Peters has been correct.
06:09But
06:11I'm not
06:11going to sit here and
06:15be incredibly worried about it
06:17until I see it not work out.
06:19See,
06:19I don't look at that as an Adam Peters man correct.
06:23I think Adam Peters did not
06:24let him go.
06:25He let him go because
06:26he also got some
06:28information from his coaches.
06:30So the coaches probably are the ones like,
06:33look,
06:33we'll be comfortable with him.
06:34And if you have coaches on the side of the move,
06:37I have no issue with it.
06:41I'm with you, man.
06:42I think
06:43it's like
06:45whoever's decision.
06:47The organization made a decision
06:49to let Biotis go.
06:50And I doubt it was a straight money thing.
06:53They had,
06:53maybe it was the cash that was owed to him.
06:56I think
06:56people get so caught up.
06:57Did he have some little back something or whatever?
06:59There was some knee stuff.
07:00I mean,
07:00the knee stuff was happening.
07:01Yeah.
07:02And maybe,
07:03maybe,
07:04you know,
07:04sometimes
07:05teams are very
07:07clever
07:08when they decide to let somebody go
07:10because they see something
07:11or they've been told something
07:13by the medical people.
07:15Don't know,
07:16but I've seen it happen in the past.
07:18I pulled up Allegretti's
07:20Illinois bio.
07:21How about this?
07:24Honor roll student at Illinois.
07:26National Honor Society member.
07:28Two-time academic all-state.
07:31I've always thought Nick was smart
07:33just in conversation,
07:33but he's smart.
07:35Got his,
07:36got his degree in accounting.
07:39He was a,
07:40like,
07:41I think people sleep on Allegretti,
07:43the player.
07:44I was listening to,
07:47pardon my take,
07:47PFT's podcast,
07:48right?
07:49I'm at AWL,
07:50if you're familiar.
07:51And they had Tony Romo
07:52on the pro,
07:53on the program
07:54for an interview.
07:55And Romo talked about
07:57one thing he tries
07:58to make sure he does
07:59when he's broadcasting games
08:01is to never try
08:03to diminish
08:04what a player is.
08:06Because the players
08:07that are on the back end
08:09of NFL rosters
08:10are probably
08:11the best player
08:13from that high school
08:14ever.
08:15Like,
08:16I think people
08:16really diminish.
08:19Okay,
08:19so Allegretti was a backup,
08:21now he's a starter,
08:21therefore he can't be good.
08:23This dude
08:24was an All-American
08:25in high school.
08:26Like,
08:27he played in that
08:27U.S. Army
08:28All-American game.
08:29Like,
08:29all of these guys
08:30are excellent
08:31to even get
08:32to that level.
08:33Yeah.
08:34and I hate
08:35as like a sports society
08:38the need to like
08:40diminish and downplay
08:41the accomplishments
08:42of these dudes
08:42getting to that level.
08:44Like,
08:45if you look at
08:47Allegretti's
08:47college
08:48resume,
08:51Big Ten Medal
08:52of Honor recipient,
08:54senior class award
08:54candidate,
08:55Jason Witten,
08:56Collegiate Man of the Year
08:57semifinalist,
08:58Campbell Trophy
08:59semifinalist.
09:00Like,
09:02the amount
09:03a four-time
09:05academic
09:06All-Big Ten,
09:07two-time
09:07Big Ten
09:07sportsmanship winner,
09:09two-time
09:09team captain,
09:11number three
09:12rated guard
09:13in the nation
09:13by Pro Football Focus
09:14in 2018,
09:15the year he's drafted.
09:16Like,
09:17look at
09:17the accomplishments
09:19here.
09:19He started
09:2036 consecutive
09:21games in college
09:22and he's a
09:23seventh rounder.
09:24You know how good
09:25these people are?
09:27So,
09:27I think we're just
09:29too quick to be like,
09:30ah,
09:30this dude can't play
09:31because he was a
09:31backup or he's a
09:32seventh round pick.
09:33But see,
09:33Jay,
09:33that's what society
09:35is now.
09:37Somebody doesn't
09:38see a guy
09:39with a big name
09:41and they say,
09:42well,
09:42he's not that guy.
09:43So,
09:44one person says it,
09:45tomorrow it's a million
09:46people thinking it
09:48because somebody's
09:49going to get it.
09:50They don't know.
09:51Can he play or not?
09:53You watch him play guard?
09:55I don't think he was
09:55bad at guard.
09:56So,
09:57now,
09:57if he's a capable
09:59snapper,
09:59everybody's not
10:00capable of snapping
10:01the ball and
10:02blocking.
10:03If he's had time
10:05doing it
10:05and they've seen
10:07how well he played
10:07at guard,
10:08then they must be
10:09confident in him
10:10to make the move
10:10that they made.
10:12And,
10:13I know
10:14we have a lot
10:15of fans
10:15who talk about
10:16they watch film
10:17and they study film
10:18and they know all this,
10:19but I will take
10:20what these coaches
10:20think before
10:21any of these fans.
10:23And we're going
10:23to find out.
10:25that's the fun part
10:26is they don't have
10:28to be the absolute
10:29best.
10:29They have to be
10:30good enough
10:31to make sure
10:32plays keep going
10:33forward.
10:34And if they can
10:35constantly be on
10:36the positive side
10:37more often than not,
10:38that's good enough
10:39for me.
10:40I also think,
10:41you know what helps
10:42an offensive line?
10:43Play action.
10:44You know what
10:44offensive linemen
10:45want to do?
10:45Run the ball.
10:46And not run the ball
10:47out of shotgun.
10:48And they want to run it
10:48with a hand in the ground
10:49instead of running it,
10:50sitting in a damn
10:51two-point stance.
10:52What do you think
10:52happens with Coleman?
10:53I mean,
10:54he was a relatively
10:56high draft pick
10:56that started,
10:58I mean,
10:58it's crazy to go
10:59back to 24.
11:00He's now in his
11:01third year, right?
11:01And Alec Reddy
11:02played left guard.
11:03He's in his third
11:03year, right?
11:04This is the year
11:05where he has to
11:05really start showing
11:06them what he's
11:07capable of or you're
11:09going to start seeing
11:10people.
11:10Can't get banged up.
11:11Yeah.
11:11Can't get banged up.
11:12Too much little stuff.
11:13And the little things
11:14have to be erased.
11:17See,
11:18when you look at
11:19what Chris,
11:20Chris Paul's been around
11:21here for a good
11:21little while now.
11:22But when Chris Paul
11:23got in there,
11:23he was solid.
11:25And if you're
11:25consistently solid,
11:26you'll get the job.
11:27But you can't be
11:28solid one play,
11:29solid one play,
11:30and then the next
11:30play,
11:31boom,
11:31somebody fly past you.
11:33And Brandon now
11:34has to begin to
11:35show them,
11:36I have it.
11:37I'm learning it.
11:38I don't need
11:39nobody to tell me
11:40anymore.
11:41Because you get
11:42drafted that high,
11:43people are looking
11:43for,
11:44like I always tell you,
11:46you have to take
11:46ownership in your job.
11:48Too many guys are
11:49still waiting to be
11:50coached.
11:51No, no, no.
11:51When you step on,
11:53when you come to
11:53work every morning,
11:55you should already
11:56know.
11:56You don't wait until
11:57they install it.
11:58If you know they're
11:59going to be installing
11:59something,
11:59you got the damn
12:00playbook,
12:00why you wait till
12:01you get to practice
12:01to do it?
12:02You should know it
12:03when you step into it.
12:04So you get on the
12:04football field,
12:05all you do is react.
12:09What else you do?
12:10You go to practice,
12:11you go home,
12:12you got a lot of
12:12damn time.
12:13Get you a big
12:14old screen TV,
12:16a big screen,
12:17and watch film
12:18all the time.
12:19I guarantee you,
12:20watching film will
12:21make your job a lot
12:22easier.
12:23Because if you watch
12:24film and you know
12:24what people are doing,
12:25they give away
12:26tendencies,
12:26you'll be waiting on
12:27them to make moves.
12:28you'll be waiting
