00:00Oh my goodness, what a catch, incredible, yeah, did he catch it, yes, yeah, swing, got him on a table,
00:10okay, hit him all the way, play ball, you couldn't write a script any better than this, that ball is
00:16high, that is far, there it is, he's gone, he's gone, he's gone, way back, get up, get out of
00:24here, let's play ball, and they're going to hold the loop on this place,
00:29play ball.
00:36What's up everyone, welcome to another episode of play ball presented by Nike, I'm your host Kate Maniscalco ready to
00:42bring you all the best from around the game, we've got plenty to cover this week, but most importantly, it's
00:47our last show before play ball weekend, that's right, next weekend, the entire baseball world will focus its efforts on
00:54all of you, from free baseball and softball clinics to wiffle ball games,
00:57and even events with your local teams, there's something for everyone, it's not too late to sign up for an
01:02event near you, so head to playball.org today for more info, we've got a great show ready for you,
01:08so let's kick things off by getting to know the Dimebacks star outfielder, Corbin Carroll.
01:12Corbin's on the run, he's going the distance, he's going for speed.
01:17This guy's unbelievable, he's unforgettable, he's one of one, he's the reason why he come to the ballpark.
01:23Watch him hit and watch him run.
01:26If I gave you a million dollars to compete in something that wasn't baseball related, what do you think you
01:30can compete in?
01:31What do I think I compete in? I mean, I think, I think it's got to be running, like some
01:35sort of track meet, hopefully I'm not going up against actual track meets, yeah.
01:42No, we're going to line you up against Noah Lyles, you're right on the field.
01:45So, on an away trip, what are you doing in the morning? Are you just like hanging out, are you
01:48a video games type of person?
01:51I'm a big, like just sleep late on the road, yeah. I mean, that's kind of my time just to
01:57chill out, maybe go get a little food and then head to the field.
02:02What is your post-game meal, something you're eating after the game, and is it dependent on how you played
02:06that day?
02:07No, not dependent on how I played. Yeah, I mean, our nutritionist does a really good job, so like right
02:13when we get back in there, there's a smoothie in our locker ready for us.
02:16And then, yeah, our chefs do a great job too, so there's always something good to eat there.
02:21So, a smoothie, so we're keeping it light post-game?
02:23No, I mean, I'm going smoothie and then full dinner.
02:25Oh, full dinner? Immediately, yeah.
02:27So, like two meals?
02:27Yeah, yeah.
02:28Who on your team do you think will have the most success with the ABS challenge system?
02:31Most success?
02:32Yes.
02:34Our catcher, Gabby, he's pretty good defensively, he's pretty good.
02:39Offensively, probably for Dumbo. He's got a great eye.
02:41Would you rather, every time you ran the bases, your hands were glued to your side, or with a pebble
02:46in your shoe in the outfield?
02:50Probably the pebble in the shoe, honestly.
02:53Really? I mean, I guess you need your arms to run.
02:55I want to steal some bases. That's my game.
02:58Was there anyone growing up that you watched that you really modeled your game after?
03:02Yeah, I mean, growing up, Trout, Altuve, Yellich, those were kind of the guys I was getting on YouTube and
03:10looking at their swing.
03:12When you're on away trips, do you use an alias for your hotels?
03:15Or, like, an alias for DoorDash or Uber Eats?
03:19Yeah.
03:20You do?
03:21Yeah.
03:22Really? Okay, obviously, I don't like dilltals, but...
03:24It's clever. I'll tell you off camera.
03:26Okay, but... Thanks.
03:29Okay, let's play ball.
03:31Let's do it. Help me out with the athletic positioning here.
03:33Perfect. So, the athletic position, it's like you're playing defense in basketball, soccer, volleyball,
03:38but you want to be weight towards your toes.
03:41You don't want to be on your heels, and it almost looks like you're dancing on a toilet,
03:44holding pizzas in your hands.
03:46Stay with me.
03:47Now, this drill, it's a short hop drill where I'm going to field it, and then I'm going to pivot.
03:53Kind of like a mongoose.
03:55Okay.
03:55Pivot.
03:57Mongoose.
03:58Pivot.
03:59Boom.
03:59And I could just do this all day, anywhere, and you can use anything here.
04:07Socks, Cheetos, Philly cheesesteaks, or baseballs.
04:13And you do this on vacation, you do this at home, you do this in the backyard, it doesn't matter.
04:16Anytime, anywhere, just dance on the toilet and pivot.
04:21Perfect.
04:22Bye.
04:25Stick around.
04:26After the break, we'll take a look back at the history of the Cincinnati Reds.
04:29But first, it's time for Bobby versus Ballgame.
04:33Each week, Bobby and Coach Ballgame will compete alongside your favorite MLB stars.
04:38This week, it's What's That Stance?
04:41Can you name this player from just their batting stance?
04:44Think about it.
04:45We'll reveal the answer after the break.
04:54Welcome back to Play Ball, presented by Nike.
04:58All right.
04:59Let's get back to Bobby versus Ballgame.
05:01Think you know which player this is?
05:03Let's take a look and see if you got it right.
05:07At Angel Stadium, I think this is...
05:11Whoa.
05:12Who's this?
05:13Oh, no.
05:14Hands away from the body.
05:16Slight open stance.
05:19Dude, this is...
05:20I don't know.
05:21Man, that guy's...
05:22Oh, it's Will Smith?
05:24Yep, very good.
05:24Nice.
05:25Will Smith?
05:26Yep.
05:27Will Smith?
05:27Yep.
05:28Will Smith?
05:29Yep, nice.
05:30Oh, that's Will Smith.
05:31Hands out, hands out, flat back or tall back.
05:33I think it's Julio Rodriguez.
05:37No, it's not.
05:38It's not Will Smith.
05:39It's Will Smith.
05:40Will Smith.
05:41Will Smith.
05:42Yep, the hands.
05:43Will Smith.
05:44Will Smith, yep.
05:47Will Smith.
05:48He's a bet.
05:48You got Rojas?
05:49Not Rojas.
05:52Nah, I'm not right.
05:53Catcher.
05:53Will Smith.
05:55Will Smith.
05:56Yep.
05:56Will Smith.
05:58Everyone gets Will, too.
06:00Dodgers.
06:01Will Smith?
06:01Yep.
06:02Yeah, it's just Smith.
06:04You got to catch him.
06:05Will Smith?
06:06Mm-hmm.
06:06Yep.
06:07Will?
06:07Will, yeah.
06:08Oh, my God.
06:09I know.
06:10I didn't know the fans were out there either.
06:11I didn't know that.
06:13Sorry, ball game, but Bobby Witt Jr. got you this week.
06:16Let's take a look at the score for this season.
06:22Thanks for playing, and be ready for another one next week.
06:28Each week leading up to the Nike RBI World Series, we'll be highlighting unique stories from around
06:33the country within the Nike RBI program.
06:35These stories feature the efforts designed to give young people from underserved and diverse
06:39communities the opportunity to play baseball and softball.
06:42This week's spotlight features a coach who is having a huge impact for the Kansas City
06:46Royals Urban Youth Academy and Nike RBI program.
06:55I think one of the cool stories is Dash Johnson is someone who went through the program as
06:59a player, received the RBI for RBI scholarship.
07:01I was actually there as a coach when he received that award and would later go on to hire him
07:06as a coach at the Rangers Youth Academy.
07:09He took on a leadership role in our program at the Rangers Youth Academy, and then a veteran
07:13to somebody who now is the director of the academy.
07:15J.C., we're here, baby.
07:17I've been in baseball a really long time.
07:19I was a player at the Houston Astros Academy, so I played RBI with them.
07:23I've been to the World Series, the RBI Regional, so I've been a part of that as a player.
07:26This is what I wanted to do.
07:27I've always wanted to oversee a youth academy because it's just done so much for me.
07:32He's like a second father.
07:33He's helping you on everything, making sure you're doing better, and just keep moving forward
07:38and playing the game.
07:39Always makes you smile every single time you talk to him, you know?
07:41One of those dudes, for sure, so it's definitely a blessing to get him to play for him this year.
07:45He's somebody that is a tremendous example for young people in the program, a tremendous leader,
07:50and somebody who is passionate about both the game of baseball and seeing kids get the most out of the
07:56sport.
07:57My job specifically is to find a way to make sure that you reach your full potential.
08:01Coach Dash is a great coach.
08:02He brings energy, but he also knows the game very well.
08:05As a player, it will make you better.
08:07We have great people in the organization that will help you with hitting and fielding,
08:12and they've helped me in ways that I can't even imagine it.
08:15We're here just to get everybody a little bit better,
08:18and if I'm able to do that on the baseball field and in life,
08:20then I'm doing something right and I can go to sleep knowing that I did something right that evening.
08:24We play it hard.
08:29We play to win.
08:30We're making baseball fun again.
08:34Cincinnati, the home of the Reds.
08:44One of baseball's greatest cities here at Great American Ballpark.
08:48A city that harbors a love for baseball.
08:50Boy, what a memorable scene here in Cincinnati.
08:54For the Reds are a team with a glorious past.
08:56There is some specialness happening with this ball club.
08:59A club that has helped build the foundation of this sport as we know it.
09:03Not just history, but history written in big, bold letters.
09:07The first professional team in 1869.
09:10Back in 1869, they called them the Red Legs.
09:13And in 1935, the Reds introduced lights.
09:18That's it, the Cincinnati Reds win the World Series.
09:22This is the happiest ball of my life.
09:23I'm scared I'm going to have a coroner.
09:24The Reds built a machine.
09:27That big red machine, which has been rattling and rumbling along.
09:30In 1990, it was the Nasty Boys.
09:34Cincinnati, the champions of baseball.
09:37Spirit and pride were kept alive through those that carried the Reds' team.
09:41Joe Morgan.
09:43Joey Votto.
09:44Barry Larkin.
09:45Players who left their mark on the Cincinnati fans.
09:48Cincinnati's phenomenal Frank Robinson.
09:50Johnny Bench in flying red colors for Pete Rose.
09:54There is love of one day here in Cincinnati.
09:57The success and the milestones create new heroes.
10:01The Reds are National League Central Division champions.
10:05You talk about a city in all its glory, so that's Reds' country in Cincinnati tonight.
10:12Each season brings new life to the Reds.
10:15Filled with memories.
10:17Filled with dreams.
10:18For generations to come.
10:25Now it's time for Kickin' It, presented by Nike.
10:36We'll be right back.
10:57It's that time of the week.
10:59When we come back, we'll take you through some of the best stories from around the league
11:02in This Week in Baseball.
11:06Welcome back to Playball, presented by Nike.
11:11We're nowhere near Christmas right now.
11:13But on Monday night, the Astros had the entire baseball world waiting for Santa.
11:18Allen versus Santa, that is.
11:20It's a custom belt.
11:22And the Santa hat's all over it.
11:24Come on.
11:25Love Santa.
11:26I love this kid already.
11:28The 23-year-old made his major league debut with a no-hitter on the line.
11:33And validated manager Joe Espada's belief with two perfect innings to close out baseball's
11:38first no-hitter since 2024.
11:40And he hits a soft pop-up, and Santa makes the catch.
11:44Santa gives a kiss to the sky as the Astros are through eight innings.
11:48Tatsuie Imae started the game with six hitless frames, his best outing in the big so far.
11:54Let your defense work.
11:55That's what Imae has done for a sixth inning.
11:58And Steven Okert carried the no-no through the seventh.
12:01And we've got something brewing in Arlington.
12:04We'll go to the eighth inning.
12:05Astros lead nine-nothing.
12:07But it was Santa who was tasked with delivering the biggest gift of the night.
12:11Alan Bersanta in his major league debut gets the last six outs with two perfect innings
12:18and this celebration begins.
12:19And he made sure it would be a debut to remember, becoming only the second pitcher ever to open
12:24their career by pitching in a no-hitter.
12:29The Arizona Diamondbacks are striking back after a slow start,
12:33and it's largely thanks to one of baseball's fastest men.
12:36Corbin's on the run.
12:37He's going the distance.
12:39He's going for spin.
12:41Corbin Carroll has been playing like an MVP since his debut in 2022.
12:44But in his fourth full season, he's taken his game to a whole new level.
12:49This guy's unbelievable.
12:51He's unforgettable.
12:52On Sunday, Carroll put together one of the best games of his career,
12:56going 4-for-4 with two triples and a 9-1 D-backs win.
13:00That put Carroll at eight triples for the season,
13:03twice as many as any other player and 51 for his career.
13:07He's the reason why he come to the ballpark.
13:09Watch him hit and watch him run.
13:11He became the second fastest player of all time to reach 80 homers and 50 triples.
13:16Only Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig did it faster.
13:20Carroll's on pace to lead the majors in triples for the third straight season,
13:23and he's only one triple away from tying the Dimebacks' club record of 52.
13:30Turns out a minor tune-up to the Dodgers lineup may have Mookie Betts firing on all cylinders.
13:36It's gone!
13:37There's the feel.
13:39There's the results.
13:40Dave Roberts decided to give Mookie a new perspective on Tuesday,
13:44dropping him from his usual two-hole down to the cleanup spot for the first time since 2017.
13:49Safe to say, Mookie's slumbering bat woke up.
13:53And this ball is gone!
13:55A home run as Mookie announces he is back.
13:59Betts went atomic against the Rockies, launching two homers and driving in five.
14:04Well, Betts in that cleanup spot, and that's exactly what he's been doing with runs.
14:09He's been cleaning them up.
14:10And hey, shout out Andy Paz.
14:12He shifted up into the two-spot, racked up four hits, and extended his MLB-leading RBI total.
14:19The Dodgers have been winning and are on top in the NL West,
14:22but getting Mookie Betts back to his old self makes their chances at a three-peat look a whole lot
14:27better.
14:30Now it's time to break out the notebook for twin notes from around the league.
14:34On May 27, 1968, the baseball stork delivered twice, giving us both Frank Thomas and Jeff Bagwell.
14:43Yes, two legendary sluggers born on the exact same day.
14:48These two first basemen would grow up to absolutely terrorize Major League pitching throughout the 90s.
14:54Forget about it, Jeff Bagwell has just done it again.
14:58It is out of here!
14:59A three-round over for the Big Herd!
15:01In Chicago, standing at 6'5", the Big Herd brought a massive frame and an eagle eye to the plate,
15:08clobbering 521 career homers with a lifetime 3-0-1 average.
15:13Big Frank Thomas, he was looking for it, got it, and did not miss it.
15:18Meanwhile, in Houston, Bagwell used his signature low crouch to power his way to 449 dingers.
15:25Holy Toledo! Bagwell bags another one!
15:28Both took home MVP awards and were the faces of their franchises for a generation, eventually punching their tickets to
15:35Cooperstown.
15:36Thomas in 2014 and Bagwell in 2017.
15:39And if I could have given you guys anything for being at the dinner table or going to a game,
15:44in a world that can be tough sometimes.
15:46But if you enjoyed me playing and brought our families together, then I did my job. Thank you.
15:52Did you know that of the 300-plus people enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame, the only two born
15:57on the same exact day and year are these two?
16:01Talk about a shared destiny.
16:03Now, pitchers who faced them might still be shell-shocked, but from the rest of us, happy birthday, Frank and
16:09Jeff.
16:12If you're feeling crabby, check out some of these wild and weird moments from around the league.
16:17Since going to tag out, Bowers, who had the crab crawl back toward first base.
16:22Is this 1-1-1-3 on the put-outs?
16:27Of course, catching it is one thing.
16:29Fire truck!
16:31Whoa!
16:32Go through the five-hole?
16:33Yeah, it sure did.
16:34Now that's what you call really struggling.
16:37Now let's see some animal instincts on display in the field.
16:41Here you go!
16:43Behind the back! What a play!
16:45Get a load of this.
16:46Say hey, Austin Martin, right?
16:49He made an incredible catch!
16:52And a liner caught by a leaping Bobby Witt Jr.
16:54No question about that one.
16:56Robles over, goes to a dive, and makes a tremendous catch.
17:00Oh, I didn't give him a shot off the bat to come down to that baseball.
17:04Hmm, how about that?
17:08Still more play ball on the way.
17:10Up next, we'll check out your finest plays from the field and get some mindfulness tips from a softball star.
17:19Welcome back to Play Ball, presented by Nike.
17:24Now it's time for Top Plays, presented by Sideline HD, where streaming your game is always free.
17:31Number five.
17:32Number five.
17:33Danny Jansen at the plate, and the winning run at scoring position.
17:37Jansen the hitter.
17:38And he hits it down the line!
17:40Base hit!
17:41Here comes Osuna!
17:43And the Rangers have their first walk-off of the year!
17:47Danny Jansen!
17:49And Jansen is mobbed as the Rangers stream out of the dugout.
17:54It's pandemonium here at Globe Life Field.
17:57Number four.
18:00Line drive.
18:01Oh my goodness gracious!
18:04Levitating in midair, and stealing a hit away from Angel Martinez.
18:09That was a tremendous fight.
18:10Oh yeah!
18:11That's behind him.
18:12It doesn't get any better than that.
18:14Number three.
18:170-1 on the way.
18:18Swing and it's tagged.
18:19Caught at second base by Jackson to save a run.
18:22He went airborne.
18:24Like a soccer goalie trying to punch one over the crossbar.
18:27He went way up in the air.
18:29Wrapped that baseball, and he retires his side.
18:32What a great play that was.
18:34Took that right out of right field.
18:38Number two.
18:40Hang on to your hats, everybody.
18:41Here we go.
18:42The Mariners trying to win it with a walk-off.
18:44He swings, laces it on the line!
18:46To left field!
18:48Calroni's on his way home!
18:49Josh Naylor!
18:51The Mariners win!
18:54Holy smokes!
18:55The Mariners win it!
18:56What a ball game this afternoon!
18:58Oh my goodness!
19:00What a way to end it!
19:01Josh Naylor jumping on the first pitch!
19:04And this week's number one play?
19:07Swatka tries to keep it a one-run deficit.
19:10Getting through five.
19:11Line drive.
19:13Oh!
19:13Oh, a play with lunging up the middle!
19:16Gold glove, platinum glove.
19:18That guy is top-notch defensively.
19:22That base hit written all over him.
19:24But Bobby made it disappear into his glove.
19:28Now it's your turn to elevate and celebrate.
19:31DM your best moments captured on SidelineHG for a chance to be featured.
19:42Top five toughest pitchers to face is probably Zach Wheeler, Jacob DeGrom, Paul Skeens.
19:53Going to Justin Steele, lefty.
19:55He's tough for me.
19:57Ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch.
19:58Only got four.
19:59I'm going Sammy Sosa, Albert Pujols, I like Ronald Latunia's batting stance.
20:06I like Freddie Freeman's and Joe Hayes.
20:10Top five favorite cities?
20:13You know, San Diego, Boston, Chicago.
20:16And just from a hostility standpoint, I like Philly and New York.
20:22The Athletes Unlimited Softball League kicks off its 2026 season in just a few days.
20:27And we're so excited to bring you all the action and keep introducing you to the league's top stars.
20:32This week, we've got a special Mindfulness Minute featuring 2025 AUSL champ Brie Ellis of the Utah Talons.
20:39Take it away, Brie.
20:47When I'm not playing to relax myself, oof, a good room clean, you know?
20:54I feel like your room is a direct correlation to your mind.
20:59So the more clutter I have in my space, the more clutter is going to be going on up here.
21:03So if I can clear that up, that puts me at peace.
21:06And I love that.
21:08Failure is part of the process.
21:11And you won't learn unless you do fail.
21:14You're going to fail seven times out of ten, and you're going to get a hit three times, at least
21:18for hitting.
21:18And you're elite if you get a hit three times.
21:20So what are we going to do those other seven times?
21:23And if you want to make it all the way to the top, that means you've got to be able
21:27to do that with all that pressure on you.
21:29So the younger that you can start to take failure and turn it into something positive and a lesson and
21:36a way to get better from that, sooner the better.
21:39And that's the key to success right there.
21:43Now it's time to wrap things up with the walk-off.
22:00The Angels walk it off on a Sunday night pinball machine.
22:07This is going to do it.
22:09The Marlins walk off the bench with a grand slam.
