00:00Oh my goodness! What a catch! Incredible!
00:04Yeah! Did he catch it? Yes! Yeah!
00:07Swing! And a man's got him on the table!
00:10Play ball! New Kane! Hit it all the way!
00:12Play ball! You could write a script pretty better than this!
00:16That ball is high! That is far!
00:19It is! He's gone! He's gone! He's gone!
00:21Way back! Get up! Get out of here!
00:24Well, play ball! They're gonna hold the lube on this place!
00:29Play ball!
00:36Hello and welcome back to another episode of Play Ball presented by Nike.
00:41I'm your host, Kate Maniscalco, and we've got another jam-packed episode for you.
00:46The baseball season is always full of surprises,
00:48and some of the best ones come in the form of players having a breakout season.
00:53And so far this season, almost no pitcher has had a bigger breakout
00:57than Davis Martin of the Chicago White Sox.
01:00He's 5-1 through his first eight starts with a 1.62 ERA,
01:04and he's helping keep the White Sox in the hunt for the AL Central crown.
01:07I got the chance to catch up with Davis earlier this season, so let's check it out.
01:14Davis Martin has just been outstanding.
01:16I mean, just absolute perfection.
01:18Swing and a miss! Strike three!
01:20Davis Martin.
01:22And right now, he's among the elite in baseball.
01:26All right, first question.
01:27If you could have any fictional character voice over your pitch com, who would it be?
01:31Morgan Freeman.
01:33Immediate answer.
01:34Fictional, non-fictional, it's still gonna be Morgan Freeman.
01:36I don't care. I want Morgan Freeman.
01:38If your catcher could say anything to you that's not the pitch in the pitch com, what would it be?
01:44Probably. I mean, we have two funny catchers.
01:46We have Kyle Teal and Edgar Caro.
01:48Yes.
01:48And so I know that I'd love to, Kyle would be like, yes, man, yes!
01:53That's all I want.
01:54Like, every time we hit the pitch, right, he's like, let's go!
01:56So, guy brings some energy.
01:58If you could create another position on the diamond, what would it be?
02:03I'd probably do, as a pitcher, I'd probably do a fourth outfielder.
02:08Yeah.
02:08I'm sure the position players are not gonna like that, but fourth outfielder.
02:12Let's cut down on those line drives.
02:14If I gave you a million dollars to compete in a skills competition outside of baseball,
02:18what would you compete in?
02:21Probably football.
02:22Football?
02:23Football.
02:23Did you play growing up?
02:24Yeah, played middle linebacker in high school.
02:26Oh, wow. Okay.
02:27No offensive production here, baby.
02:29Just run stopper.
02:31That's all we got.
02:32That's awesome.
02:33What is your postgame meal, something you're eating after the game?
02:36About as much pizza as I could possibly consume.
02:39Oh, okay.
02:40I love that.
02:40Like, plain pizza, pepperoni, like, what are we working with?
02:43I mean, in Chicago, like, we got some options, so it's gonna go between deep dish, probably
02:48gonna be deep dish, a little pepperoni, a little Italian sausage.
02:52Yeah.
02:52You know, the works.
02:53What was the first job you had growing up, and were you any good at it?
02:56I was a busboy at Texas Roadhouse, and I was really good at it.
03:01I was so good at it.
03:02I was the best at my job.
03:04Yeah.
03:05Last one.
03:06What person in your family would you trust to umpire your game?
03:09Oof.
03:12Honestly, I'd probably say my oldest brother, Chase Martin.
03:15Chase, I know you'd get me, man.
03:16Yeah.
03:16I know you'd give me those extra inches on the corner, so respect.
03:19Awesome.
03:20Thanks so much.
03:22Okay.
03:23Let's play ball.
03:24Let's play ball.
03:24All right.
03:25So, tell us a little bit about the drill that you're teaching us today.
03:26So, this is ground balls.
03:28You can do it anywhere, backyard, in your room, but just roll me a ball if you could,
03:32and I want to field that ball.
03:35Let me hear you say triangle.
03:36Triangle.
03:37Triangle, and then smack that alligator mouth right there on top before I vacuum in.
03:42Give me another.
03:44Triangle, shape of a triangle, glove in my two knees, alligator, and then bring it in
03:49for the vacuum.
03:50Now, what about to the side?
03:52Side with your forearm?
03:53Uh-huh.
03:54Try to focus on bringing the glove through the ball.
03:58We don't want to stab at it, and we don't want it to get too deep.
04:02So, through the ball, boom, boom, like that, almost dragging the glove on the ground.
04:09Backhand, same thing.
04:10Through the ball like that, boom, you're going to field every ball.
04:15Perfect.
04:16That was awesome.
04:17And they can do this anywhere.
04:18They can do it anywhere, anytime, twice on Sunday.
04:22Perfect.
04:25Stick around.
04:26After the break, we'll head west for some Seattle history.
04:29But first, it's time for Bobby versus Ballgame.
04:33Each week, Bobby and Coach Ballgame will compete alongside your favorite MLB stars.
04:38This week, it's What's That Stance?
04:41Can you name this player from just their batting stance?
04:44Think about it.
04:45We'll reveal the answer after the break.
04:53Play Ball is presented by Nike.
04:57Welcome back to Play Ball, presented by Nike.
05:01All right, let's get back to Bobby versus Ballgame.
05:04Think you know which player this is?
05:06Let's take a look and see if you got it right.
05:36Come on.
05:38Barger?
05:38Yeah, very good.
05:39Addison Barger.
05:41Addison.
05:41I want to say that it's Dominguez or McMahon.
05:46Addison Barger.
05:46Yeah, I know because he's on the field.
05:48No, you're fine.
05:48Is that Devers?
05:49Not Devers.
05:50Is it Barger?
05:51Yeah, nice.
05:51No, no, no.
05:53Bro, I'm like, I'm like, bro, you sent me a video.
05:56Really good World Series.
05:57Is that Barger?
05:57It is Barger, yep.
05:59Barger?
05:59Yes, very good.
06:00Is it Bar Show?
06:02No, it's not Bar Show.
06:03That's the other one.
06:04God, I'm so bad with names.
06:05He has long hair.
06:06Yes.
06:06I'm so bad with names.
06:08It's bad.
06:08It's ridiculous.
06:10Addison Barger.
06:11Addison Barger.
06:11There we go.
06:12He did really well on the World Series.
06:13Yeah, he was really good.
06:14He's a really good player.
06:15I'm going to say Mickey Tettleton.
06:18God.
06:19Addison Barger.
06:20Man, he crushed it in the World Series, didn't he?
06:23A, B.
06:24No, A, B.
06:26Yeah, I know.
06:27You got it.
06:28I mean, you have it.
06:29Addison Barger.
06:30Yeah, Barger.
06:31Yeah, that one, that one.
06:34Sorry, ball game, but Bobby Witt Jr. got you this week.
06:37Let's take a look at the score for this season.
06:42Thanks for playing, and be ready for another one next week.
06:49Each week leading up to the Nike RBI World Series, we'll be highlighting unique stories
06:54from around the country within the Nike RBI program.
06:57These stories feature the efforts designed to give young people from underserved and diverse
07:01communities the opportunity to play baseball and softball.
07:04In this week's Nike RBI Spotlight, we catch up with a Braves Nike RBI alum now playing softball
07:10at Michigan State.
07:16Playing for Atlanta RBI was a great experience and developed me a lot as a player and as a
07:20person I am today, and it really helped me just be where my feet are, just be a good
07:26teammate, and just be the best player that I could be.
07:28It developed me a lot.
07:29It gave me a lot of new skills on the field, things that I didn't really know before I
07:34learned on the field.
07:35It just gave me, like I said, more reps, more experience, and just a way to bond with
07:39my teammates, like adaptability, all of that.
07:41I actually enjoyed it so much, being able to play with teammates from other teams, and
07:44a wonderful cohesive team to represent the city of Atlanta.
07:47It was wonderful.
07:47They really took the time to cater to us and make sure that we were comfortable, to provide
07:51us with a great facility, and it was a great experience overall.
07:54Playing in the RBI World Series was an honor, and it felt just so amazing to just be somewhere
07:59that was so historically deep.
08:01It was like almost a dream come true.
08:02Like when you learn the history and everything behind it, like it means so much more than
08:06just softball, honestly.
08:07Like it felt like an honor to even be able to play there.
08:09It's a great organization.
08:10It's a great way to get your foot in and to get some exposure and travel.
08:13I mean, you get to travel on a larger scale.
08:15I mean, with MLBs backing you up, I mean, how can you, you know, not do that?
08:20Softball has been my life, all my life, so I knew that I could do something bigger, and
08:25I just stuck to it, and I ended up where I am, and I'm super happy where I am.
08:28Playing in the NFCA tournament with my experience has just helped me so much and been super fun.
08:35I'm so excited.
08:36It's the first time I've been able to see her come here.
08:38We're coming from Atlanta, so this is an easy drive, and we're 4-1, so that's even better.
08:42Oh, dude.
08:46Hello.
08:47Are you Julio Cruz?
08:48Yes, I am.
08:49We have a search warrant.
08:56Your Seattle Mariner.
09:00Baseball in Seattle and the Great Pacific Northwest.
09:03Here at T-Mobile Park, the fans are going crazy.
09:06Get out the rye bread and the mustard this time, Grandma.
09:11Since 1977, much has happened.
09:14The Mariners are in the record book with win number 116.
09:20A lot of ups, a lot of downs.
09:22And that hat's taking a beat.
09:24Again, and again.
09:25The Mariners sometimes found their baseball world turned topsy-turvy.
09:30Blenny Randall gets down on his hands and knees and blows on it like a curler.
09:35And man alive, the fans were ready to give their beloved ball club all the support they
09:40could muster.
09:42He got it!
09:43A perfect game!
09:44It was done by the team!
09:47It was a star-studded occasion.
09:49E.G.
09:50Rowe, you are unbelievable!
09:52That featured the best ballplayers in the game.
09:55A grand slam for Edgar Martinez!
09:59Alex Rodriguez!
10:00Oh, what?
10:02Randy Johnson was the first pair of no-hitter in history.
10:05The best pitcher in the majors did his thing, while the best player rocked the place.
10:11Can Zippy Jr.
10:13Poolel?
10:14Puchisi Bo Caliente is the only way to describe the big-time production.
10:29The Mariners have one destination in mind, to be at baseball's top.
10:34It may take time, but one thing's for sure, anything can happen.
10:45Now it's time for Kicking It, presented by Nike.
11:20Still more to come, when Play Ball returns, we'll check out some of the league's top stories
11:25in This Week in Baseball.
11:29Kicking It is presented by Nike.
11:33Welcome back to Play Ball, presented by Nike.
11:38Hi, I'm Bobby Witt Jr.
11:40This Week in Baseball is back.
11:41How about that?
11:44Coming off AL Player of the Week honors, where he hit over 400 with three homers,
11:50Bobby Witt Jr. was all gas, no brakes.
11:53And grounded inside the bag and up the line.
11:56Played poorly off the side wall by Carpenter.
12:00How far will Bobby go?
12:02And Vance Wilson is going to let him come to the plate.
12:04He is in there!
12:06To say Bobby is on a tear is an understatement.
12:09His gap-to-gap power and that lightning speed has him among the major league leaders in hits,
12:15stolen bases, and war.
12:17He also just happens to be one of baseball's premier defensive players.
12:21Goodness, that's why he's one of the best in the game.
12:24That is how you win a gold glove in back-to-back seasons, and last year earned a platinum glove.
12:30Baseball fans are bearing witness to something special.
12:33He's their go-to guy in all situations, whether it's defensively, offensively, run the bases.
12:38Complete player.
12:38A primetime player in his prime.
12:43The Chicago Cubs are holding down first place in the NL Central,
12:47but in their rearview mirror, the surging Brewers have been doing their best impression of the Cubs' walk-off ways.
12:53Ready, he goes in there safely.
12:55The Brewers walk it off on a sack fly from Wild Bill.
13:00The Brew crew swept the Yankees out of Milwaukee in style,
13:03winning back-to-back games on walk-offs from William Contreras and Bryce Terrain.
13:08The Brewers get a walk-off on Mother's Day, and it is Terrain who wins it.
13:15But the real star of the series was Jacob Mizorowski and his 11 punch-outs in Game 1.
13:21And a swing and a miss.
13:22He struck him out.
13:24Standing ovation here in Milwaukee.
13:27The Miz is at the center of the Brewers' success this season,
13:30and his complete skill set was on display against one of baseball's best lineups.
13:35Big fastball from Mizorowski to 103.
13:39In one of the most dominant first innings you'll ever see, he retired the side on 10 pitches,
13:46all at 102 or faster.
13:49And another one at 103 miles an hour.
13:52And the Miz coming out of the bullpen rocking here tonight.
13:56If that wasn't hard enough to hit, he also mixed in a 98-mile-an-hour slider.
14:02Swing and a miss.
14:03He struck him out.
14:04Got him with the slider.
14:05Yeah, it'd be nice to be able to throw a slider at that Milwaukee.
14:08And on Wednesday night against the Padres, it was more of the same for the Miz.
14:12And he's got it.
14:13And the Miz shines once again at American Family Field.
14:18Ten strikeouts in seven shutout innings here tonight in Milwaukee.
14:25As the Brewers look to chase down their division rivals in the Central,
14:29they'll need all the help from Miz they can get.
14:33Donnie Baseball is back, and so are the Fightin' Phils.
14:37Goodness gracious, what a comeback.
14:40After a rough 9-19 start, Don Mattingly took the helm,
14:43and he's steering the Phillies towards success.
14:46How about winning seven out of eight right off the bat for the new skipper?
14:49Going from bottom of the table to one of the hottest teams in baseball.
14:53And it is a shutout for the Phillies today.
14:56Powering the resurgence?
14:58The usual suspects.
15:00Back-to-back home runs.
15:02Schwarber and Harper.
15:04Bryce Harper is giving pitchers MVP-level headaches.
15:07And Kyle Schwarber, who just can't stop going yard.
15:11Both these guys have a legit shot at 500 homers when it's all said and done.
15:15But it's not just those two.
15:17Brandon Marsh, Alec Boehm, and Trey Turner are locked in,
15:21and the pitching staff has flipped the switch.
15:23With Aaron Nola, Jesus Lizardo, Christopher Sanchez, and Zach Wheeler
15:27all dealing under Donnie.
15:29The vibes at Citizens Bank Park completely flipped.
15:32And the Phillies look like they found their swagger.
15:39Now it's time to break out the notebook for twid notes from around the league.
15:43The city of Atlanta lost two greats last week
15:46with the passing of former owner Ted Turner and manager Bobby Cox.
15:50Immediate titan and pioneer, Ted Turner bought the Braves in 1976,
15:55programmed them on a superstation, and made them America's team.
15:59But on May 11, 1977, after the Bravos dropped 16 straight,
16:04Ted had enough.
16:05So he put on a uniform, headed to the dugout, and managed the team himself.
16:09Come see the big league team.
16:11I've only experienced it.
16:12Hey, we're in Atlanta.
16:13They lost the game, and Ted was immediately out of the managing business,
16:17thanks to a ruling from the league president.
16:19So what did he do to right the ship?
16:21He hired Bobby Cox, then fired him after four seasons.
16:25But after Cox's stint in Toronto, Ted brought him back as a GM,
16:29and Cox began to build the Braves' future.
16:31I've always been a friend of Ted's, and always will be,
16:36and felt someday I might go back, and now it's happened.
16:40Developing future Hall of Famers Glavin and Smoltz,
16:43and drafting a kid named Chipper.
16:45Then in 91, it was Cox pulling a Turner,
16:49moving himself down to the dugout.
16:51And the rest, as they say, is history.
16:55Cox proceeded to win 14 straight division titles,
16:59five NL pennants, and the 1995 World Series.
17:03The team of the 90s has its world championship.
17:07Along the way, the Billy Martin protege also managed to get ejected,
17:11a record 162 times, basically a whole season.
17:16He had some words for plate umpire Ted Barrett.
17:19Ted Barrett threw him out of the game,
17:20and that makes Bobby Cox the all-time record holder.
17:23Tied at the hip in Atlanta Braves history,
17:25Ted Turner brought the Braves to America,
17:27and Bobby Cox molded a dynasty.
17:36Don't touch your remote.
17:37When we come back, we'll take a look at some of your top plays
17:40and some of the top plays of the week in the walk-off.
17:46Welcome back to Play Ball, presented by Nike.
17:51What's up, everybody?
17:52Happy Mother's Day.
17:54Today we celebrate the MVP Moms.
17:56Nicely done with the signs.
17:58It starts really well.
17:59It never really ends that well for Phoebe.
18:01Have you guys had a chance to call Moms yet?
18:03Spencer Jones gave Mom Lee a Mother's Day gift of an RBI single.
18:07Those cleats are awesome.
18:08He wanted to thank his mom for all the delicious cooking,
18:11crediting that cooking for the 15 home run power.
18:15We salute all the moms out there who take us to the game,
18:18pick us up from practice, make us lunches,
18:20make us dinner afterwards, take us back to the ballpark.
18:25Last Sunday was Mother's Day, and all around Major League Baseball,
18:28players and fans alike came together to celebrate their moms in their lives.
18:32You may have even done something similar yourself.
18:34There are a few things that make moms and all parents feel better
18:37than seeing their children succeed.
18:39I know when I was back playing softball in the glory days,
18:42nothing would make my mom happier than when I went 4-4 at the plate
18:45and made a terrific play at shortstop.
18:47So let's celebrate some of your success in the field with this week's Top Plays.
18:52Now it's time for Top Plays presented by Sideline HD,
