00:00Around the clock, work continues at the temporary camps in Venezuela, which had to be transformed in record time to
00:06receive those affected by the double earthquake.
00:08At Simón Bolívar University in Nahuatl, people deprived of their liberty are working to provide families with a dignified space
00:15after the tragedy. Here's the story.
00:20Arrived at Simón Bolívar University in Nahuatl, La Guaira, just a few kilometers from the area's hardest hit by the
00:27double earthquake of June 24th.
00:29Today, this site shelters more than 600 people affected by the earthquakes and, as in other temporary camps, work to
00:36receive them continues without rest.
00:38However, this center has a distinctive feature. Some of those carrying out this work are people deprived of their liberty.
00:47We are building the different collection centers so that those affected feel good and feel comfortable.
00:54Painting and preparing everything related to water. Since there are a lot of people, 600 people who are going to
01:00be here, we are installing showers.
01:02We are installing toilets. We are putting things in the bathrooms so that they are truly comfortable here during the
01:08estimated time they will be staying.
01:10This is a social reintegration project of the Ministry of Penitentiary Service that has been running for years and allows
01:17people currently deprived of their liberty, like Jesus, to contribute to society with their skills.
01:23That contribution is then translated into a reduction of their sentence.
01:27The current situation brought a new challenge, preparing spaces such as schools and universities in record time to house families.
01:34And the crews did not hesitate to join in.
01:39The guys are enthusiastic, you know, giving those people something so they don't feel so sad, and seeing them work
01:45so enthusiastically so that they feel good.
01:51To feel that they are part of being able to help those who are going through a profound process of
01:56suffering because they lost their material possessions,
01:58they lost a family member, and, well, what better way than to provide them with shelter, to be part of
02:04that process of caring for those brotherly groups who are suffering and enduring hardship.
02:11And, furthermore, legally this serves as a process of sentence redemption because the law establishes it that way.
02:21The work does not stop. The need is great and everyone wants to contribute from their place.
02:26What drives many of them is a desire to be part of the reconstruction that will help confront so much
02:33pain.
02:34For us, it is a privilege to be able to contribute and to set an example for all those people
02:39who are also deprived of their liberty, like us,
02:41to keep moving forward and to show that with work, awareness and discipline, we can achieve many things.
02:46On camera, Marcos Ancilba, Belen de los Santos, for Chara Sur English, from Naiguita, La Guaira, Venezuela.
