00:00And in the context of the presidential elections in Peru, we welcome now from the south, Peruvian
00:06historian and political scientist Isaac Biggio, who is joining us from London to share his
00:12views about the current democratic process.
00:14Welcome Mr. Biggio.
00:17Hello, good afternoon.
00:19So Mr. Biggio, this election in Peru comes amid a very great political instability in
00:27the country.
00:28How do you think this is affecting both the current situation, the citizens trust in
00:33the democratic process and voter turnout?
00:40Well, we had more than eight presidents in the last eight years.
00:53We don't know if the next president is going to last too much time.
00:59Amongst the population, there is a lot of disappointment with the judiciary, the police, because of the
01:07corruption and the high volume of street violence.
01:14And we have a very strong polarization between the supporters of the former Fujimori dictatorship
01:22that ruled our country in the 90s and a left, a center left wing candidate that wants to defend
01:32human rights and stop corruption.
01:35So at the moment, according to the opinion polls, both of them have equal possibilities.
01:47I think that because of the because of the big demonstrations that had Roberto Sanchez,
01:56is larger than the one that had Keiko Bojimori, because in many parts of the country,
02:02Keiko Bojimori is not allowed to enter because of the opposition of the population.
02:06And because Keiko lost in the two electoral debates, I think that it is more likely that Roberto
02:15Sanchez is going to win the elections if there is not some elements of fraud.
02:22because we started today with denunciation that the Fujimoristas have a ballot papers with
02:37marks in support of their candidate.
02:41So I think that Roberto Sanchez is most likely to win the elections.
02:52Well, in this context, we have seen a rise in the last few years of the right in Latin America.
02:59How do you think this cope with the pressures upon the region of the Donald Trump administration
03:04is affecting the elections today?
03:10Well, something that Peruvians are not very happy is that the US ambassador was the only ambassador
03:18in the presidential debate, and he had visited the electoral court.
03:27And they are afraid that the US is trying to interfere.
03:33Already the US put a lot of pressure to the current president that he has to buy some warplanes.
03:43So it is possible that the United States is trying to push Peru to move in the direction of Chile,
03:52Argentina, and Bolivia.
04:00And in Colombia, the far right started to grow because previously there was a left-wing government.
04:11But in Peru in the last 10 years, it was Keiko Fujimori who was ruling the country from parliament.
04:18So the opposition is not against a left-wing government.
04:23It's against the Fujimoristas.
04:26So I think that Peru has more possibilities to move to the left than the other countries.
04:34And it seems likely that Peru is going to vote for the center-left.
04:41So I think that it's a very nice thing to vote.
04:41But it is not because we're not going to vote for the whole election, so we've beenจaged.
04:41and it seems like it's a very nice one and one's a standard one.
04:41You can't forgive us, but let's give a few words.
04:41But now we call it the last question, but you can do what you do.
04:42But it's the last question.
04:42There's the question.
04:42You can't forgive us.
