00:01norm van brocklin and the rest of the players came up to him and told me that uh you know
00:07everyone makes a mistake picked up by jim marshall is running the wrong way i think i said at the
00:13time yeah but i made mine in front of 40 million people this is wow an episode about foul-ups
00:20and
00:20my stupid face cam already fouled up not a black screen there's no countdown of ordinary
00:29mistakes this is a tour through football's twilight zone
00:42where mistakes change lives here it comes with another bad snap game is over it becomes a defining
00:50moment it becomes a career reputations in sports aren't always fair failure is part of the game
00:59infamy is the price to be paid these are the nfl's top 10 foul ups
01:07the number 10 foul up of all time dave hampton's quest for a thousand yards
01:15in the early years of the franchise the atlanta falcons fouled up a lot rooting for them was
01:22hazardous to your health not much has changed the atlanta falcons were a really bad team in the
01:27early 70s winning was so hard to come by in atlanta but running back dave hampton was a breath of
01:34fresh
01:34air in 1972 he was poised to become the falcons first thousand yards the irony of the statement is
01:41they had three consecutive 500 or above seasons from 71 to 73 from the two years that are noted in
01:50this
01:50list for dave hampton rusher dave hampton was a solid back in a different era of football not a lot
01:59of
01:59people rushed for a thousand yards certainly not a lot of players on bad teams you had oj simpson you
02:05had jim brown you had jim taylor a big big name who rushed for a thousand yards in the 14
02:10-game schedule
02:11back in those days a thousand yards really meant something
02:16in the final game of the 1972 season hampton broke the thousand yard mark but would soon fall victim to
02:24our number ten foul up that carry dave hampton now has a thousand one yards for the season and the
02:30falcons finally have a thousand yard rush and he gains a thousand we stop the game we celebrate the
02:35game give him the ball they look pretty foolish before i sat the idea that you would stop the game
02:41present him with the game ball to the other team standing across the line and look and say give him
02:45the game ball we'll give him the game ball just let him carry it again but i guess they were
02:50so happy
02:51to have something to celebrate in those days of the falcons they had to stop it for anything
02:55they did give me the ball at that time and i never thought it would you know i'll just go
03:00on from
03:00there his next carry went back to 995 yards he was never give the ball again
03:31they're showing off in front of a chief's defense that had five hall of famers
03:36he's lucky he didn't get sandwiched between way near and bow
03:43to ensure that records keep going streaks occur or milestones are reached he played real football
03:50after that play that he got a thousand yards and sometimes in real football running backs go
03:55backwards well i visited him at the institution recently when they do let him out of the padded
04:01cell this is a joke he had a very good sense of humor really of course they've added in the
04:07highlight
04:07film dave hampton like the atlanta falcons ended the season just a tantalizing step or so away
04:15the irony if you saw number 81 let's go back
04:23season just a number 81 right here the chiefs is marvin upshaw
04:28brother of hall of fame raiders player gene upshaw
04:33and they were hated rivals so probably awkward awkward get together
04:41analyzing step four so away
04:45relive that you know every time that was
04:49hampton relived our number 10 foul up the next year he entered 1973's final game needing just 87 yards
04:56for a thousand but fell three yards and a cloud of dust short i still needed about 10 or 20
05:02yards
05:02for it and they knew i was coming and they stacked the defense up to stop and they did he
05:07gets to the
05:08time looking over his shoulder and see what's going on in 1975 this ahab in cleats finally caught his
05:15whale again another year the last game trying to get this thousand yards they call a play from
05:22i think i gave like 15 yards so it took me over a thousand yards and immediately i was taken
05:28out of
05:29the game to make sure that that wouldn't happen again coming up kickers foul up all the time which
05:35ones made our list what's the key to staying off our list of foul ups no matter how bad things
05:45get
05:48don't lose your head if this costs the saints this is going to be just pathetic on turley's part
05:54in 2002 dwayne rudd that wasn't his helmet that was another guy's helmet
06:00lost the browns a game by throwing his helmet
06:03dwayne rudd took his helmet off and threw it when he thought that they had drank green down and the
06:09game was over rudd throwing his helmet it's going to get the chiefs an opportunity for a field goal
06:14here dwayne rudd goes down is making one of the biggest mistakes in cleveland browns history but as
06:22gusper rott found out keeping your helmet on can't prevent a bonehead move either bang hits his head
06:28right into the cushion the uh diagnosis after the x-rays was a jammed neck and we just saw how
06:33he did
06:33it the number nine foul up of all time thurman thomas loses his helmet before the super bowl
06:41kenneth davis is in at running back not thurman thomas is he hurt is something is something wrong
06:47they got introduced he should be there what's going on here's this guy who's the best all-around
06:53running back in the game here are the bills who are ready to finally win the super bowl
06:58why is thurman thomas not on the field this is not possible
07:04the bills and the redskins are getting ready to get it on in super bowl 26. yeah they're back in
07:10the super bowl they won't lose two of these in a row they're too good that offense is incredible
07:14the bills because they're more of a household name came in with more hype and more expectations
07:20like hey this is going to be the year that they actually get it done so much for that
07:29imagine doing all this to get smoked by mark ripon
07:41i mean the redskins were a great team and they deserve more credit than
07:47thurman thomas losing his helmet they would have won anywhere so why is thomas responsible for our
07:53number nine fouled up their most valuable offensive player couldn't find itself it's not the way you
07:59want to start the day the one missed two offensive plays they had no outcome on the out effect on
08:04the
08:05outcome of the game but they were the 91 redskins were chopped liver they were 14 and 2
08:13a legit all-time team one piece of equipment you need to go on the field which isn't already attached
08:18to your body and you can't find it you do this when you're a fourth grader you do this as
08:23an eighth
08:23grader it just shouldn't happen of all the days to forget your helmet dude where's your head you know
08:30where's your head where's your helmet what are you doing thurman had a tradition of leaving his helmet on
08:35the 40 yard line harry connick jr was going to sing the national anthem one of his band members was
08:40coming out
08:40there to set up he moved the helmet thomas soon found his helmet but after he committed our number
08:52nine foul up the bills never found their groove it was downhill from thurman not being able to find his
08:57helmet to get on the field some of it's bad luck but some of it you bring it on yourself
09:02and if you're
09:03this multi-dimensional hybrid running back and you're about to make the first impact on the game
09:09and you're going out there with kelly and marv levy and you're taking on joe gibbs you have your
09:14helmet bill pollian the general manager of the bills at the time just went ballistic recently in
09:20indianapolis where bill of course is now president of the cults harry connick was performing and bill's
09:26wife wanted to take him to the concert bill said i'm not gonna go see harry connick play i hate
09:30that guy
09:30he ruined our super bowl the number eight follow up no you playing a better team ruined your super
09:38ball i can't stand bills and bill's apologists they played better teams that's why they lost
09:50the ball time bill luckett's bad luck if ever a referee was jinxed it was phil luckett the hex
09:59began on thanksgiving day in 1998 when he turned an overtime coin toss into a controversy
10:06college plays an air he said heads it is a tail i was actually on my way to my sister's
10:15house for a
10:15nice thanksgiving calm dinner oh he said tails when i got to her house i was greeted with you've got
10:22issues certainly sounded like the betta said tails he said heads but phil went with the call of heads
10:31the lions took the lions took the ball and never gave it back anson's kick is on its way that
10:36kick is
10:37long high and good how hard is it to toss a coin in the air to listen to the actual
10:45call what's the call
10:46and to look down and say heads or tails
10:53you just say to to hear tails and say heads is the call
11:00all up was picked apart frame by frame it wasn't till sound was really amplified
11:06that it does sound like that maybe he started with something else
11:28but many still have their doubts the man standing right next to drone bettis didn't actually hear
11:34what i did sitting in my couch 1500 miles away and he didn't get it right
11:45he stayed with that call and and and i don't i don't blame him i don't blame him at all
11:51phil luck had it officiated a lot of games before that you didn't think of his name you didn't think
11:57of his face and then all you thought about after that was bewildering the saga of our number eight
12:02foul-up didn't end in detroit and new york the next week luck its notoriety only grew larger
12:12with the jets trailing late in the fourth quarter the thanksgiving coin toss became last week's news
12:22quarterbacks need diving for the end zone well short of the goal and all of a sudden an official from
12:28the
12:28far sideline that was maybe the worst call in nfl history bar none because it wasn't arguable he was
12:37short he was down he came out of the locker room he was up in the stands having a co
12:42-cola and a hot
12:43dog with a fan but he came running toward the middle of the field with his arms up raised touchdown
12:48the jets win this is the same crew which passed the thanksgiving flip of the court between pittsburgh
12:54and detroit it wasn't phil that really was not his call but he happened to be the referee so he
13:00just
13:00was kind of playoff chances basically went down the tube and it cost dennis erickson at the end of
13:06that was probably
13:08the kinds of controversies even when he made the right call he throws it across the field
13:21the dice and he said he will do the backwards pass to make sure it's a backwards path it's a
13:28totally
13:28a forward call it was a correct call i don't care what any bills fan has to say that was
13:37a correct call
13:40no question it's physics after reviewing the play the ruling on the field stands it was a lateral
13:48the music city miracle was subjected to more computer analysis
13:52than the zapruder film the conclusion luckett was right i realized that it was at least parallel if
13:59not a little bit backwards and really really really an incredible call in 2001 luckett asked to work
14:08games as a back judge but even there he always seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong
14:14time
14:14bear's horn oh my why does this always happen coming up why is larry zonka ticked off at his own
14:26teammate we lose this game i'm gonna kill you amazing that larry zonka is on two of the teams in
14:34the top five
14:37or top six top seven don't have it easy mike vanderjack had the highest accuracy percentage of
14:48any kicker in nfl history kickers don't have it easy mike vanderjack had the highest accuracy percentage of
14:59any kicker in nfl history but in the playoffs he was mike vanderchoke trailing by seven in jacksonville
15:09the 2003 saints needed a last second miracle to keep their playoff hopes alive he's going to the 35
15:15and he's still on his feet and he throws the ball that's a forward lateral his man's got it he's
15:20still
15:20running he's on his feet at the 20 now he's throwing it back it's caught there goes the back into
15:27the end
15:27zone are you kidding all sorts of incredible plays along the line for the saints to stay alive
15:34pending the extra point by john carney no he missed the extra point wide right scott norwood missed wide
15:44right but it was a long shot it was almost 50 yards on grass that was no short kick
15:52sometimes kickers don't even have a chance to foul it up romo at the nine
15:57romo can't get the spot down this is an unbelievably heartbreaking loss
16:04the number seven follow-up of all time garo yapremian's gap garo yapremian never saw a professional
16:12football game until this year as a key member of the undefeated 72 dolphins kicker garo yapremian
16:19was perfectly strange that was a fairly stoic business-like team garo was comic relief won't
16:28you come home bill bailey won't you come home asked him where he attended college and he said
16:34bald state i don't see there's any setback playing with long hair i've done it without any hair and it
16:40doesn't bother me if anybody was going to commit the most famous slunder in super bowl history it was
16:46fitting that it was garo yapremian with the dolphins on the brink of completing their perfect season
16:54yapremian was about to commit our number seven foul up prior to the super bowl game my ball wasn't
17:00really taking the trajectory i liked i kept on hitting line drives line drives but being the consummate
17:06professional that i am i didn't go to coachula and say coach today we shouldn't try any field goals
17:12we scored two touchdowns and i kicked the extra point and it was really nice the ball was going
17:16very high so you forgot about that low trajectory the kick wasn't even blocked garo yapremian's kick wasn't
17:22even blocked he doinked it off his own lineman's helmet
17:27three kick with about four minutes left in the game coach called me over and said a 42 yarder go
17:34and
17:34kick it
17:37a 42 yard attempt by your premier snap step down the kick is blocked rolling loose on the field
17:42and it's picked up by garo he tries to throw a pass deflected in the air grab by bam 40
17:4835 30 he's going to score
17:51down
17:55lined up the snap was perfect i kicked the ball line drive hit one of the linemen
18:03the ball bounced all over the place i picked it up i figured this is a negative i'll take
18:08this and turn it into a positive the ball slipped out of my hands went up in the air gravity
18:13didn't
18:13even help me the ball is coming towards me i said if i bat it out of bounds i'll be
18:18safe so i'm going
18:19like this i hit the ball mike bass picked it up went for a touchdown
18:26what in the hell is garo doing i couldn't believe my eyes and then oh sugar mike bass has got
18:35the
18:35football and they're going to score we've been dominating this game from start to finish and
18:41they're one touchdown behind jay scott looked him right in the eye and said garo if we lose this game
18:47i'm going to kill you but they won so it was the ugliest thing i've ever seen it was the
18:54ugliest thing
18:54anyone had ever seen this was the worst thing that could happen for kickers for generations kickers
19:02didn't look like they belonged on the football field at all regardless of the helmet pads because
19:06of garo your premium come on let him off the bus it seems funny now it seems cute if they
19:14had lost that
19:15game because of that play nobody would be smiling about it 30 years later thank god we won the game
19:27when you think of the miami dolphins the undefeated season what's the image that comes to your mind
19:35it's not larry zaka it's not the no name defense yes it is that's it's garo your premiums
19:43the number six follow-up of all time gary anderson blows his perfect season
19:50he will always be known he doesn't belong on the list
19:55as the guy who was part of screwing up the vikings trip to the super bowl
20:00even though he had this magnificent season in 1998 the vikings were clear super bowl favorites
20:06that's now
20:17be like you're headed to an amusement park they're easily the best team in football
20:21three teams have been 15 and one in the history of the national football league give yourselves a round
20:26of applause at 15 and one the vikings weren't perfect but kicker gary anderson was he didn't miss a kick
20:34the entire regular season anderson is connected on 46 consecutive field goals this year the national
20:39football league gary anderson had the first ever perfect season
20:46late in the nfc championship game the super bowl was one kick away gary anderson
20:53and he hasn't missed the field goal since moses is part of the season let's put him away and they
20:58have an opportunity here with gary anderson to put this game out of reach this is the perfect way to
21:03end it this is slander anderson has been as a reminder that the offensive line didn't do its job
21:11they let guys run at gary anderson unblocked and he left to pull the cake left
21:19all season long he's been perfect on field goal attempts and pats placement the kick it is
21:27no good it missed wide to the left unbelievable i remember looking up and saying wow
21:39our number six foul up gave the falcons new life they tied the game and in overtime
21:45their anderson didn't miss the vikings should have been in that super bowl that year wasn't a 55
22:04yard kick it wasn't outside it wasn't cold and for him to miss what a tough way for him to
22:10be known
22:11in this film gary anderson has missed a field goal for the first time in two years
22:17gary anderson has a miss and the guy ran into the kicker right there where was the roughing the kicker
22:24penalty he misses this field goal you up gary you blue history gary it is
22:34yeah thanks thanks a lot smith way to way to kick a guy when he's down i'm not gonna go
22:40at smith
22:40because he's our outside linebackers coach but way to way to kick a guy when he's down when it wasn't
22:47his fault they lost
22:50become one of the mythic moments in sports history in this town for him not to deliver just left you
22:56empty
22:5798 was the season all the stars had aligned when you have the perfect storm that this was
23:03that perfect season you're a hall of fame kicker you're at home you're in a dome you've led the
23:11whole game and you miss and then you end up losing it's pretty tough to top all those factors together
23:18coming up there have been 41 super bowls the biggest football game in the history of western
23:24civilization which one was the worst
23:34recapping our top 10 follow-ups number 10 now the number five follow-up of all time the redskins call
23:43rocket screen in super bowl 18. anytime there's a play that you know the name of it means they're
23:51infamous plays that you never want to hear again in 1983 the redskins were the defending super bowl
23:57champs and looked to make it two in a row i was an mvp of the league john riggins had
24:02set a rushing
24:02record for touchdowns 24 touchdowns we scored 541 points it was almost a joke it was like playing your
24:09kid in a video they were destroying teams
24:16they had beaten the raiders earlier that year so you figured hey okay been there done that high
24:21snap he goes up blocked it's going to be blocked into the end zone the raiders on a chase it'll
24:26be
24:26recovered in the end zone it'll be discovered for a later touchdown anything and everything that
24:31seemingly could go wrong did go wrong i mean the blimp they cloppered them well you have what five
24:40turnovers something like that it two scoring drives didn't crash so that's good trailing 14-3 with 12
24:50seconds left in the first half the redskins were deep in their own territory and sideline chaos led to
24:56our number five foul up i got theisman yak and lineman coaches want to do two different things
25:01finally i said shut up joe here's what we're gonna do coach gibbs says i want to run rocket screen
25:07we had run the play before against the oakland raiders joe washington went like 90 yards to help
25:13us win that ball game but i'm thinking don't you think they know that this is a place where we've
25:19run it
25:20before it's something we like it's something we do everything says that we're going to run rocket
25:25screen gibbs went to it in his mental playbook i think the raiders probably had it in there too
25:30you never try and run run the same strategy you you beat someone with before
25:39people have a really long memory about people who beat them walking away from the sidelines i'm about
25:46five yards onto the field i turned around i looked back at me pointed and he said run it
25:55the consensus in the press box was oh my god what was he thinking my reaction was what do you
26:01think
26:01yes that's my reaction sprinting out on the field saying this is unbelievable
26:07i cannot believe that the redskins back on their own 12-yard line with five seconds to go in the
26:14half would do that drop back looked like everybody was in zone well what they happen to do is put
26:20jack
26:20squire one-on-one with joe washington i turn around the ball just starts to leave my hand
26:26where somebody shoots the ball before you know it falls down there i'm praying somebody's up there
26:32with a high-powered rifle gonna shoot the ball so it hits the ground i remember watching that play
26:37in tampa stadium and just shaking my head and saying this game is over
26:45i took the bullet i was the good soldier finally i walked up to coach gibbs at his youth for
26:49tomorrow dinner i said coach i gotta taste this has been bothering me for years that was one of the
26:54dumbest calls i've ever heard in my life i wish the heck i had the guts to change it you're
26:59the man
26:59i couldn't do that he said joe you're right it wasn't a good call but that was also one of
27:04the worst
27:04passes i've ever seen as well and i said you know what you're right incredible number four foul up of
27:13all time the colts and cowboys turn the super bowl into the blunder bowl super bowl five this is a
27:23a comedy of errors the baltimore colts versus the dallas cowboys one of the most weird of all football
27:29games it was just a strange game it was if uh andy warhol was directing the three stooges dick young
27:36wrote a great lead i don't know whether i've just seen the greatest game i've ever covered or the
27:41worst that was the worst super bowl ever played not all the bungling occurred on the field you go back
27:47to the pre-game ceremony it was supposed to be one of the first flyovers they didn't practice it enough
27:52so they sang the national anthem and then everybody's waiting a minute goes by
27:58two minutes go by three minutes four minutes five minutes finally the jets come over so many
28:06things happened that game it's a wonder any of us survived it
28:11with 11 total turnovers no one was immune to the blunder bug in the blunder bowl that game
28:19looked like the kind of exhibition game we'd send to london in early august so they could see american
28:26football it's just dreadful i think a lot of it because the guys put a lot of pressure on
28:31themselves one mistake leads to another mistake and this tightness starts in each one of them i think
28:38that's why it was a carnival even when the colts pulled it together for a touchdown rookie kicker jim o
28:47'brien
28:48fouled it up the day before the game o'brien did not have a good day of practice he said
28:53to me
28:53they're not counting on me sunday he misses the extra point he's been slightly erratic a time
28:57you can imagine what my feelings were the rest of the day about the game coming down to jim o
29:03'brien
29:03the cowboys controlled the second half until they fumbled and the officials joined in on the foul of
29:10theft it was dave manders the cowboys that came up with the ball dave manders has it totally they gave
29:16the ball to the colts and we could not believe it and to me that fumble recovery is one of
29:26the great
29:26mysteries of super bowl history we score there and i think the game is put away but we didn't
29:33this wasn't going to come down to the team that made the last big play it's going to come down
29:38to
29:39who made the last big mistake that particularly the cowboys
29:49another set of circumstances
30:01it was the erratic rookie kicker who was true blue and the baltimore colts have won the super bowl
30:10chuck howley was named super bowl mvp and remains the only player from a losing team
30:15who given that honor that told you yeah and then pro football hall of fame voters followed up
30:23his life by keeping him out of the hall of fame for about 40 plus years but he's in there
30:30now
30:31what a bizarre kind of game it was can we honor anyone from the winning team we can't we gotta
30:38honor
30:39this defender because he was the one guy who performed at a level worthy of recognition
30:45i'm just lucky we won coming up everything's bigger in texas even foul-ups but who gets the yellow rose
30:53for making our list
30:57phil luckett isn't the only man who's fouled up a coin toss you don't have to explain anything
31:02when we win in 2002 marty morningwig had some explaining to do when he took the wind
31:10in overtime the wind is the reason i don't care you don't give up the ball the spot is good
31:15he
31:16uncoils delivers the kick and over in fighting the whip and he's gone and the bears have won in overtime
31:23in the 1962 afl championship game hank stram tried to take the win but abner canes fouled it up
31:31we will kick to the clock we will kick to the clock we will kick to the clock we will
31:36kick to the clock

31:43the guy even the guy was surprised that he said it to that he said he was gonna kick
31:51listen to the surprise all championship game hank stram tried to take the win
31:57but abner canes fouled it up we will kick to the clock you're gonna kick
32:03abner's
32:04gave the ball and the wind to the houston oilers
32:14the texans finally got the win in the second overtime and won the game sparing pains from our
32:21list abner's boner remains uh very limp in my memory what pause
32:32the number three foul-up of all time leon let's let down
32:38i don't think he's ever got the credit he's always going to be remembered for his goops i mean you're
32:43talking about the biggest stages in the nfl thanksgiving day and the super bowl
32:48the first one of those was at the end of super bowl 27.
32:53right on fourth down the throw pressure
32:55and fumble and leon
32:58oh
33:01leon
33:03it's a fumble
33:04it's a fumble he had it knocked out of his hand it's not going to be a touchdown
33:08it's not
33:09you saw leon and then all of a sudden there goes don bb and you're like
33:14he's going to catch him and i'm just looking down the sideline at the jumbotron sideline jumbotron
33:18and he's going to get him he's going to get him and then sure enough boom
33:22you come so close yet you're so far away
33:27in philadelphia we don't have that many great plays to get excited about
33:33so why was it 97 blocking we get excited when other people like the people we hate the most like
33:39cowboys do something like that what was going to be his greatest moment scoring a touchdown in a
33:45super bowl for a defensive tackle ends up being one of these blooper plays that everybody will
33:50remember about him in the history of the nfl how does a guy get to run that fun and screw
33:57up when he
33:57gets near the end zone what a leon came to the sideline and i said man what happened he said
34:04he was
34:04watching the jumbotron and he was trying to do mike werven where he put the ball out across the
34:10goal line and he did see don bb don bb caught him from behind and knocked it out of his
34:16head
34:18and at the time it would have been a super bowl record for points
34:2352 of them it's hard to be upset about that from the absolute worst to the absolute best the cowboys
34:32are back on top of the mountain they should stay there a while on thanksgiving day 1993 our number
34:38three foul up played the goat once again it wouldn't have been part of the lore of the nfl that
34:44it has
34:44become if the snow wasn't on top we fought a very tough football game against miami that day it was
34:51a
34:51fun game to play
34:55until the end of the game miami's trying to kick a field goal and if they make it
35:00the game's over if they miss it we win it's a 41 the game would have been over either way
35:10they made it they lost they missed it with they they won
35:15it's a first down kick and it's blocked it's blocked and rolling around at the 10-yard line
35:21you can see the ball spinning around on the white snow and everybody's saying get away peter peter peter
35:26meaning stay away from the ball stay away from the ball it's like a hand grenade don't touch it it
35:31might blow up in your face one white jersey with a stone in it come running out of nowhere you
35:44just
35:44need to get the ball in the series no one knows why i think they get another shot this is
35:48miami's ball so
35:49they get another shot this time the field goal good you lose the game
35:56it was probably our fault we hadn't had him on the field goal block team and so our special teams
36:02coach wanted to put him on the field goal block team because of the conditions and so not having
36:09worked on the different situations leon was unsure about what to do after ball was blocked oh
36:15left leon left oh this is too good this is this let's all bring the turkey up let's have some
36:22more
36:23it's time to celebrate again after that game we couldn't find leon where was he and he's probably
36:28gonna go kill himself leon was really upset about it and i never forget a girl sent him a note
36:36and said
36:36gosh leon don't worry about it last year during the super bowl there was this guy that was going in
36:42the score touchdown and and had the ball ripped out of his hands right before we scored don't worry
36:50about it people make mistakes all the time happen to be the same guy is there any way you can
36:57come
36:57back we miss leon we need him back start spreading the news which big blue blunder made the front page
37:06of
37:06our countdown game is over gotta know when to hold him and know when to fold him now get set
37:13for a
37:13play you'll probably never see again the bears wizard white while attempting to pass spots the rams
37:18about to close in so backward he goes those who don't learn from history are doomed to foul up all
37:26over
37:26again like bob greasy in super bowl six
37:38when he was nine his pop warner coach should have told him not to do that weaving and weaving and
37:44weaving and weaving and losing ground fall down bob on the other hand some throw it away players forget
37:51that it ain't over till it's over he's trying to fall he wasn't down he wasn't down nobody touched
37:56the foot he wasn't down he wasn't down nobody touched the foot he doesn't touch it here come
37:59what do you do this move he would look ahead of and then he let him go and tom coughlin
38:04goes up to
38:05and says what are you thinking we're going to be sick about this one for forever giants fans know the
38:14feeling
38:23we used to beat by everyone i'm just terrible for
38:35god the new york
38:37what are you doing it
38:40be tying twice every year
38:47yeah
38:50they were really six and all against the giants
38:53for a span of three years and then seven and 29 against everybody else
38:58late in 1978 the eagles patsies had become big blue bullies
39:03and philly's faint playoff hopes were drowning in a sea of giants i thought that was going to be the
39:09first time we got beat by the giants since i was here i was ready to get up out of
39:13my seat and say
39:15hey this game is over the late interception by the giants they'll preserve a giant victory an upset win
39:22as the giants lead 17 to 12 or inside 30 seconds the eagles have no timeouts we were going to
39:27shoot a gap we
39:28were just going to try to make anything happen we kind of went crashing into joe pisarczyk everybody
39:34thought it was a cheap shot and they started pushing and shoving and the giant coach john mcveigh
39:38saw the eagles pile on him and for some reason he said i don't want joe to get hurt let's
39:42go with that
39:43handoff from here on in bizarczyk can just fall on the football and there is nothing the eagles can do
39:49and bizarczyk humbles the football it's picked up by herman edwards 15 and five touchdown eagles i don't
39:57believe it herman edwards is running towards me and it's like slow motion my mind couldn't grasp it
40:03oh my god this can't be half all the tail breaks loose i don't know how long it took
40:07herman to get his breath because i'm sure they smashed it it was like a rugby match of scrum
40:12everybody's piled all over each other i was actually standing in the end zone there was a new york
40:17city cop who was standing next to me who kept saying that can't count that won't count i finally
40:23said to him i hate to tell you but they are lining up to kick an extra point i think
40:28it counts
40:31look we'll take our victories however they come but do you make that happen that was a giant screw
40:37up and i mean giant with a big letter and a little letter i remember we were ahead and we
40:41lost
40:42i'm like how stupid can you be to run a play like that just fall on the ball it defines
40:50joe
40:50sarjik any moment at the end of a game where somebody does something was terrible but that
40:58was the most terrible foolish to turn the ball over it's called a pisarcik moment and i know joe and
41:04so he's got a sense of humor about it i don't want to talk about that play i'm sorry i
41:10think i'm gonna
41:10fall on the ball three times and then the plays come in as called and the rest is history wait
41:16a minute
41:16here's a free fly i don't believe it the eagles pick it up and hermit edwards runs it in for
41:20a
41:20touchdown i talked to the media afterwards and then i went to the guys myself and larry zonka and
41:26they said joe what do you want to do i said let's fly to fort lauderdale we drove right to
41:31the airport
41:31with toothbrushes in our pockets got on a plane and flew to fort lauderdale that night we go off a
41:36little steam and came back and try to pick up our pants and start all over again
41:43they probably shouldn't have come back from flor for fort lauderdale for until spring
41:52for another week because their season was over
41:56following our number two foul up the giants fired their coaching staff and hired general manager
42:02george young who would build two super bowl champions the miracle of the meadowlands really
42:07turned around the giants they draft phil soon the handoff sets the running play in motion as a
42:13quarterback we want to pocket the ball close to the body to protect it with both hands securely
42:17around it i think it started the giants literally on their way to the super bowl
42:21and it certainly was necessary for us to win
42:27sparked by our number two foul up the eagles made the playoffs and two years later they were in the
42:32super bowl bringing a familiar face with them that he studied nine they traded me to philadelphia
42:37yeah it's like give him a little extra me you know he said take care of that guy the day
42:42i walked
42:42in the eagles locker room i come in there and they were saying thank you joe for this for that
42:47every
42:47time joe basargic locker room i'd run to my locker real quick and i'd yell over to herman
42:52herman will you please do it just one more time and i'd take the ball and i'd throw it in
42:56front of
42:56basargic and he'd scoop it up and he'd go down the locker room putting moves on everybody and then spiking
43:02it
43:02down by the lines of linemen at the end of the locker room i don't believe i would love to
43:15hey herman edwards he played to win the game
43:18the foul up is the right choice even though it's wrong all the way and now the number one nfl
43:27follow-up of all time jim marshall's wrong way run
43:34there was this bonehead of the year award he was supposed to go to dallas to receive the award
43:40he got on the wrong plane and ended up in chicago
43:45there are many reasons to remember jim marshall jim marshall played 19 years at defensive end and
43:52never missed a game the lou garrick of pro football playing one of the most physical positions defensive
43:58man this guy was an iron man who played hurt all the time he nearly died with encephalitis he's had
44:04more operations probably than any football player in the history of the game he was in training camp you
44:09know he's throwing up a grape and he's trying to and nearly choked to death nearly froze to death in
44:13a
44:13hunting accident he was a skydiver one morning i was lying in bed and i looked out and i saw
44:20some
44:20big puffy clouds and i thought to myself how beautiful to be completely free and unattached to anything on
44:28earth he was and is as smart of a human being as i've ever known he could quote teddy roosevelt's
44:35inauguration speeches far better it is to dare mighty things to win glorious triumphs even though
44:43checkered by failure than to be ranked with those poor souls who live in the great twilight that knows
44:49not victory nor defeat jim marshall belongs in the hall of fame and it's a shame that when you think
44:56of
44:56jim marshall you think of the wrong way run yeah this play used to be funny now it's sad
45:06jim marshall belonged in the hall of fame 40 years ago he never made it and he's gone now
45:15because it's one play that he made up for during the game that's the worst part they won the game
45:23because
45:24of the game
45:33way back to pass looking
45:38stops throws completes it to kilmer up at the 30-yard line kilmer driving for the first down loses
45:44the football it's picked up by jim marshall is running the wrong way marshall is running the wrong
45:51way and he's running it into the end zone the wrong way he thinks he scored a touchdown he has
45:57scored a
45:57safety jim comes chasing from the defensive end position down the field picks up the ball runs the
46:04wrong way not for a touchdown but for safety he threw the ball up into the stands his teammates were
46:11running
46:11along the far side of the field russ trying to tell him to cry back he was so excited so
46:17elated i said jim
46:20you ran the wrong way
46:24incredible he never stopped to look back once and said
46:31why isn't nobody on the opposing team chasing me
46:37if ever somebody needed the gps this is the guy who needed it the best part about it is how
46:43he
46:44flips the ball in celebration after he scored like yeah i just scored take that oh wait a minute
46:51i'm not in the right end zone
46:54i talked to him after the game was embarrassing he had pride as a player and he was completely
47:00devastated norm van brocklin and the rest of the players came up to me and told me that uh
47:04just forget about it everyone makes a mistake i think i said it's a time yeah but i made mine
47:09in
47:09front of 40 million people it was an embarrassing moment for jim got a lot of publicity like the
47:15rest of the country saw it replayed over and over and over again it was one of those things that
47:20you
47:20couldn't avoid of course everyone wants to know how did you feel my response is think of something
47:27that you did that you would never ever want anybody to see you do and let 100 million people
47:33watch it and question you about it ah he recovered he was fine
47:41when he retired he held the nfl record for most opponents fumbles recovered on the day he committed
47:48our number one foul up marshall caused the fumble that carl eller returned for the winning touchdown
47:56i'd never get credit for that i always talk about the wrong way right most people that are real football
48:03fans see jim marshall i told you he made up for it in totality we see all the ways that
48:11he was
48:12different than us and yet for this one moment jim marshall who was superman he became just this guy
48:20he had lost his way
