OCEAN'S LARGEST BONY FISH STUNS DIVER DURING ICY COLD ENCOUNTER

WITH PIX AND VID

BY SHUK YEE TSANG

An underwater photographer braved freezing waters to capture a rare close encounter with the ocean's largest bony fish after spotting its fin breaking the surface.

Danel Wentzel, an underwater photographer from Cape Town, South Africa, filmed the remarkable mola mola, also known as an Ocean Sunfish, off the coast of Cape Town in the Western Cape.

The footage shows the giant fish gliding gracefully through the clear blue water, its distinctive dorsal fin flapping gently as it cruises beneath the surface.

Danel said she spotted the fin after two dives and immediately knew she had to jump back into the 13°C water, despite everyone else deciding to stay on the boat.

She added that it was her first time seeing a mola mola in such clear visibility in Cape Town.

She said: "We were doing a boat dive. I saw the fin stick out of the water.

"I knew I had to get in to try get a shot of it!

Online, viewers were amazed by the rare sighting.

One commented: "So jealous you saw one so close to the surface!"

Another wrote: "Holy heck! Such great conditions too!"
