Two snorkelers came to the aid of an injured cormorant after the bird swam unusually close to them in the water.

Margarita Landry was snorkelling with her best friend in St. Petersburg, Florida, when they noticed a cormorant swimming toward them before climbing onto a nearby rock.

At first, the pair did not think much of the encounter, but they soon noticed the bird appeared to be injured, with what looked like bite marks near its tail.

The snorkelers contacted Birds in Helping Hands for advice on how to safely rescue the injured bird. Following their instructions, they carefully wrapped the cormorant in a towel and carried it to shore, where they kept it calm while waiting for help.

Around 20 minutes later, a rescuer named Thomas arrived and carefully captured the bird with a net. The cormorant was then placed in a carrier so it could be taken away for further care.

Margarita later shared the rescue on social media, where viewers left messages hoping the bird would recover.

One person wrote: "Thank you for doing this I hope he gets better."

Another commented: "Hope he recovers quickly and gets well."

A third person added: "Poor little guy."
