00:00on the um trey young front though here's an interesting piece of audio this was brian
00:07windhorst what show was this on so you can give them full proper credit pardon my take pardon my
00:13take this was windy talking about how the decision to technically speaking overpay for trey young
00:22came about and how it affected their decision making last year when they did that contract
00:28they'd already decided they were drafting debansa okay so they were like trey young is going to be
00:33our franchise point guard okay and here's the thing though they already promised him they were
00:39going to sign him when they traded for him and the reason that they did that was because they needed
00:46him to not play yeah okay because if he had played we might have won a bunch more games and
00:53they might
00:53have not gotten the number one pick and so if you're going to be a free agent the last thing
00:57you're going
00:57to do is like basically admit that you know say that i'm injured for six months so they told him
01:04like trey we're going to take care of you don't worry so we're on the same page we're invested in
01:10you we're going to bench you so they are so trey already knew he was going to get paid and
01:15that's
01:15why he agreed to it now now the wizards can't say this publicly but that's what happened and so his
01:20agent did an amazing job because he got him traded to a team that was like we want trey young
01:27and
01:27we're going to pay him and like he's going to be our point guard we're not even going to look
01:31at
01:32darren peterson we're going to we're going to totally invest in you trey because we think you
01:35can be great and then they got him to pay him a max nobody in the league wanted to trade
01:41him on a
01:42max for a year there was nobody who wanted to give him a four-year max a lot in that
01:48bite there from
01:48wendy it's a lot in there sometimes i wonder if the wizards can't say it loud why somebody told you
01:56they know you're gonna say it loud um probably because even though they don't mind that this is
02:03now out as this is what happened there's nothing that can be done to stop it it's not illegal it's
02:09not
02:09against i don't think it's against the cba bylaws i think it takes great faith and trust with the
02:16player and his agent to the team that the team doesn't have a second thought right yeah that makes
02:22sense but i'm just saying you say well that's what happened that could be your thought you may not
02:28change right but it may not have happened you know but i can understand where where you can try to
02:34derive something like that from yeah you know he comes in he played a little bit came in that first
02:40game everything was electric and quickly he stopped playing oh no no can't let him play they're almost
02:46like they want to just try him out and go okay he's really sweet now put him away yeah yeah
02:51put him
02:52away break the toy just put him away for good and and the and the convoluted way that they were
02:57kind
02:58of saying well he's still he's still experiencing some soreness and they're still rehabbing him um this is a
03:04larger league-wide and or business of sports ethical dilemma that would have to be grappled
03:12with at a higher level which is you're asking fans here in dc to pay money for tickets to games
03:20that
03:20are not cheap yeah and to see a team that is supposedly trying to win but we know they're not
03:25they're not and everyone has to buy into this lie everyone has to buy into this agreement of well okay
03:31this is the strategy and it's kind of it's kind of dirty it's not what sports should be about but
03:36because we don't have relegation in america like they do in english premier league soccer there's
03:41no risk to us to tanking there's only upside worse you are the more picks you get now they're changing
03:46that with the new lottery so we'll see how that plays out but it's just kind of it it makes
03:53i think
03:53people who otherwise want to be nba fans it makes it a harder sell it's harder to be a fan
03:59of the nba
04:00when you're like well they're trying to lose and they're parking a guy on an injury you're right
04:05they're parking a guy on injury not only because they uh want to lose but because they've already
04:12got a handshake deal under the table to give them a huge contract that nobody else wants to give them
04:15because they've made the decision he's our guy yeah now look this is a big bet by winger and dawkins
04:21to
04:21say two we believe in them that when healthy which knock on for micah he is once he comes back
04:29to
04:30playing but he was starting to glitch out injury wise more and more and obviously atlanta was happy
04:37to get rid of him so if they're happy to get rid of him okay we'll see i also thought
04:43the guy that
04:44very close to the team was like he was sick of them too he didn't feel like they were doing
04:48the
04:48things they needed to help him sure yeah right so the timing was probably okay yeah for both people
04:53yeah yeah so you've got you know you've kind of got now i think this is the last major move
04:59that the
05:00team is going to make as they get ready to go forward the the next questions will be just how
05:06do you
05:06include all these ingredients you've got a lot of different ingredients coming together you already
05:12have a young core with exciting young players from previous drafts you got an exciting big and
05:17sar you have a oft injured hall of fame caliber big that you need to work in yeah and you
05:25hope he
05:25stays healthy you got a point guard who is more scoring and shooting the defense but you know you
05:31can work around that how does that work out and then you got this number one number one who will
05:36see
05:37how much he takes the league by storm or maybe he doesn't take the league by storm how good of
05:44a
05:45one slash one is he yeah we're gonna find out starting tomorrow i mean uh does it start tomorrow
05:53it starts tomorrow i don't think it it it answers the question tomorrow but it starts tomorrow because
06:00the other guy you're playing against is going to try and up you yes you have to be able to
06:05play well
06:06enough while still playing within the framework or whatever your offense or whatever your team is
06:11trying to get you to do but you're gonna have to have some moments of showing stuff or you know
06:15how
06:15fans are they very fickle man where if things go the wrong way they go oh man did we get
06:21the right guy
06:22and it'll be that quick you know nine o'clock wizards jazz espn yeah i said i wasn't gonna watch
06:31summer league son of a gun i'm probably gonna watch it tomorrow night you know i probably am gonna poke
06:37my head in i probably need to poke my head in just just to see how limited and skeletal the
06:43rosters are
06:44because they only play 30 40 of what is it going to be your regular guys in terms of the
06:51summer league
06:52games um i want to see just how hard teams play i want to see how much defense is being
06:57played i want to
06:58see how the games are officiated i don't think i've ever really sat down and watched summer league
07:03games i've seen highlights i've read headlines of so-and-so sizzles in summer league debut
07:10and if i recall last year cooper flag who had a great rookie season uh cooper flag had a great
07:16first or second game and then they shut him down for summer league hey he shows you what he needs
07:21to
07:22show you already right and everyone's like oh man i want to see more really like it's it's the
07:28dead of summer we're at low tide i want to see more of this there you go but you're like
07:32okay
07:32he's showing us enough we're not gonna put him at risk right yeah right because it's not football
07:39but obviously you can get hurt playing basketball in the summer even less intense not as hard full out
07:49not as much fouling per se you can still get hurt we don't want that so what do you think
07:55is a good
07:56number in terms of finishing the east and wins for the wizards this year what's a good was it 82
08:03games
08:03mm-hmm i need to see about 45 wins oh boy that's a high bar and i'm not gonna if
08:14i expect them to jump
08:15i'm not gonna and i know the 17 could have easily been 25 30 this year i don't think asking
08:24for over
08:2450 50 is bad okay that's a good number what is a likely number how about that
08:34likely for me and i'm gonna be happy as 41 and 41 okay that would have gotten you nothing last
08:42year
08:42the eight seed the magic had 45 wins so 45 45 which is a massive jump in wins nearly 20
08:52jump uh surge in
08:54wins may still get you nothing and we discussed earlier with the play in
09:02yeah or making the actual playoffs be the jump so say what counts 45 or higher what counts right
09:08okay i guess so i mean i i want to see the needle move in the right direction
09:16i'm more concerned about their decision coming up on davis might be personally with no malice towards
09:25the guy i wouldn't want to put money into him i feel like you're you're potentially walking into
09:31a trap of a guy who sadly is chronically injured and the minute the ink is dry on that deal
09:37if not
09:37sooner you're going to regret it like you've already got a deal for trey young that will almost
09:42likely not age well and you'll almost likely at some point have to salary dump him if you look
09:49at it though he would trade sign is below market ain't necessarily he's he's 40 some million right
09:55right at 40 some uh donovan mitchell just signed almost 70 million a year that is crazy you know
10:01i'm saying that is crazy that contract he signed is not anywhere close to the top guys true but
10:07one might argue though he is he's not as impactful as mitchell possibly i mean you can make that when
10:15he's on and if he's good he's a damn good player and he makes his bigs better the guy passed
10:22the ball
10:23tremendously well i think like when we look at like last year when uh ken law signed everybody was so
10:31upset he's making almost seven 15 to 16 million the other guys are making 30 something 40
10:37so you gotta look at and i think the amount he's like trey's deal is close right at 50
10:45when you had other guys doing 68 70 that's one way to look at that's that's what i look at
10:51because
10:51i don't look at it according to my money i look at according to what the people in the league
10:55makes
10:56and according to what the people in the league making he not with the big boys
11:00that's what i look at the guys
11:00you
11:00you
