00:00You don't want to take too much from Summer League,
00:04but he looked every bit of the part.
00:07He looked awesome.
00:08I mean, I loved his ball handling.
00:11I loved his activity on the defensive side of the ball.
00:14As soon as he was drafted, both draft night and subsequently
00:17at the debut party the Wizards had down at the Anthem
00:22or the Wharf, wherever we were, technically.
00:24Anthem.
00:25No, that was draft night.
00:27They had the thing the next day or two where he was actually there.
00:30But whatever, it's all the same area.
00:32And he kept making a point to mention defense
00:36and that the team keeps making a point to mention defense to him.
00:39And I love just the activity on the defensive end.
00:43He was just so smooth with the basketball.
00:47And even some of the turnaround jumpers that didn't fall,
00:50you see the game is there, and those will fall.
00:54But the dunk in transition where he splits the two defenders at the rim
00:59and just flushes it.
01:01I just saw this.
01:02It was Corita Parks.
01:03I'll give her credit.
01:04She was sitting behind Paul Pierce, I guess.
01:07And Paul Pierce was sitting courtside underneath the basket.
01:11After that dunk, Paul Pierce, who I would assume is a Hall of Fame
01:15basketball player.
01:16If he's not in, he's probably getting there.
01:17He's on the fringes, yeah.
01:19Probably he's a Hall of Famer.
01:20The Basketball Hall of Fame lets everybody in.
01:22It's the most inclusive of any Hall of Fame.
01:25And he stands up and goes, that's it.
01:29I'm out of here.
01:29I've seen what I need to see.
01:31And I think of this David Aldridge quote
01:34when the commanders drafted Jaden Daniels.
01:39And all DA would say is, show me why they picked you so high.
01:43Just show me something that makes us realize why you were picked so high.
01:47And I think if that is the bar to clear with young players early in their careers,
01:54DeBotza way cleared it.
01:55He cleared it by a goal post.
01:58You know what I mean?
01:59And it was just, there's an excitement.
02:02I actually want to open the phones just to start the damn show.
02:04Yeah, no.
02:05I mean, this is what you should do.
02:07Like, as I was thinking about this, there is a lot of desperation
02:12with Wizard fans, D.C. fans who just wanted a good basketball team.
02:17Sure.
02:17The depths of how bad the Wizards slash Boulay have been
02:22Sure.
02:22Cannot be overstated.
02:24It's one of the longest droughts of not having made the conference championship game
02:29in their sport across any team in any of our leagues.
02:34It's the longest still-running gap in doing that.
02:38Did you know that?
02:38I believe it.
02:39I mean, it was what?
02:40It was before I was born.
02:41Yes.
02:41It was 79 or whatever, right?
02:44Is that the one they lost?
02:45Nine, yes.
02:46Okay.
02:46And they won 78?
02:48Oh, don't quote me on this.
02:50They went back-to-back and they won one of them and lost one of them, right?
02:53Yeah, I think they lost then one.
02:55And if somebody wants to tell me I don't know what I'm talking about,
02:58I wasn't born.
02:58So give me a break.
02:59I know.
03:00I was eight years old.
03:00But whatever.
03:01So I get it.
03:03There's a lot of happiness because this is very exciting.
03:08And there should be.
03:10But I already knew he was this good.
03:12So I'm not as crazy about it because I'm like, yeah, I saw him in college.
03:18He was sick.
03:18And I'm glad they picked him because I preferred him over Peterson.
03:23Bickle this morning said he had preferred Peterson and now has changed his mind.
03:27He's smitten.
03:28He's like, oh, good.
03:29I'm glad they got the right guy.
03:30Peterson looked good, too.
03:31But he's sloppy with the ball, dude.
03:33Oh, yeah.
03:33I think he had eight or nine turnovers last night.
03:36Yeah.
03:36But not only did AJ look great, you could just see the path to him being all over the court.
03:45And I think the fact that we now know Trey Young's absolutely a part of this thing because
03:50they gave him a zillion dollars.
03:52But Anthony Davis being there last night.
03:54Like, that's another part of it that the show of support was fascinating.
04:00By the way, here's the dunk in the tournament, you know, that he had, the reverse dunk against
04:04Texas.
04:05I mean, it just fluid, natural, like what?
04:08Yeah.
04:08So that's going to be super exciting.
04:11I also think baked into all this excitement is not just the long fatigue of an inept franchise
04:17where we, whatever, but there is definitely some echoes of Kwame syndrome.
04:24Even though John Wall turned out to be a good 1-1, the echoes of Kwame still exist.
04:30Like, oh my God, please don't be a rubber chicken.
04:34Please don't suck as the number one, number one pick.
04:38But I didn't really have that fear with this guy because he looks like he's born to play
04:42in the NBA.
04:43So it's very exciting.
04:44The era of kids coming straight out of high school.
04:46So you never saw them going against fair competition, especially, you know, whatever
04:50that was 25 years ago.
04:51Right.
04:52And like, we got to see, like, you just showed me that dunk against Texas.
04:56Texas's NIL is probably, what do you figure, the Texas basketball team's raking in?
05:0015 mil all in?
05:01I don't know.
05:02Oh, it's an expensive operation.
05:03Sure.
05:03Like, he's, we saw, seeing him at BYU carry a team to the tournament and beyond, like, I
05:11don't know.
05:11I was incredibly encouraged trying to keep my, as Steve Sands would say, I'm going to keep
05:16my poise about this.
05:18Stay medium, as Zorn would say.
05:20But like, I almost just cursed.
05:23It was, it was, it was exciting to watch, dude.
05:26I, my wife, I don't know how familiar you are with my television set up at home.
05:31You got three TVs.
05:32Three TVs.
05:33Big one, two uppers.
05:34I invented that, but you're welcome.
05:36Sure.
05:36I appreciate it.
05:38Um, when did you put them in, by the way?
05:40When?
05:40Yeah.
05:41What year?
05:42When we first bought the house, I told my wife I was putting two up.
05:45And then how'd that go over?
05:48It was my terms to, she wanted that house.
05:50I wanted a different house.
05:51So that was, that was the player to be named later.
05:55Yeah.
05:55I was putting the two TVs up.
05:56So then shout out to my man, Paul Henry, when we closed the porch in and made it like a
06:01sunroom is when I went three.
06:03Perfect.
06:03Um, perfect.
06:05I've had two in there.
06:05I mean, we've lived in that house over 10 years now.
06:08So three has probably been there.
06:10I don't know, Paul, if you, if you remember when you did that work, please text me.
06:13But when Paul Henry's crew did that work, I want to say it was post COVID because during
06:19COVID we were out there.
06:20So fairly recently.
06:20Yeah.
06:21No, I'd say it's four years ish.
06:23I mean, recently in that when, when my family moved back here to DC and moved into the house
06:29where, and now I got, I did a home theater that had three TVs, the main projector and
06:34two 60 inch Vizios from Costco.
06:37And people thought I was a madman, but the prices of TVs kept coming down, down, down,
06:41down, down, down, and they're like, well, you have to get three satellite boxes or three
06:45cable boxes.
06:46And I go, I don't care.
06:47It's an extra 10 and 10 bucks a month.
06:50I want to watch three things at once.
06:52And they're like, well, why don't you get five or six?
06:54And I'm like, that's too many.
06:55I'm not a fly.
06:56I can't see 50 things at once.
06:58So three is perfect.
07:00So good for you for that setup.
07:01Generally though, we put a show on that my wife wants and I get sports up top.
07:06Nice.
07:07And last night silently until halftime, I put my foot down and we watched.
07:12We just watched audio.
07:13Yeah.
07:13We watched my wife watched the wizard summer league game last night.
07:17Oh, I would guess that's never happened in our, whatever 15 year history is.
07:24Did you have to lie to her?
07:25And she said, well, where's all the other players that are going to be on the team?
07:28Oh, don't ask those questions.
07:30You weren't lying.
07:31When you watch Trey Johnson last night, it was as exciting as agent.
07:35Well, there was some, you're right.
07:36There was a good smattering.
07:38The kid Watkins, who they are clearly grooming to have this hyper specific role of pit bull
07:45defensive guard, watching him guard Darren Peterson and just bug the bleep out of Peterson.
07:52There was a lot to like last night.
07:54And maybe I'm more into the whiz than others, but no, you're not.
07:58It was, uh, it's appropriate.
07:59This is what is supposed to happen.
08:01This is all normal reactions.
08:03It was fun, dude.
08:04Yeah, it was fun.
08:05Now, can you explain some of the summer league rules and the free throws?
08:09The summer league went up top and we watched in the city, which I'm not sure if you're
08:11familiar with, but, uh, okay.
08:13The summer league rules are so stupid.
08:15Just make it real basketball.
08:16Darren Peterson had nine fouls last night.
08:18Is that right?
08:19Yeah.
08:20Like, what are we doing?
08:21Unlimited fouls.
08:22No, you foul out at 10.
08:24Oh, but we had Chris Miller on yesterday.
08:27And this is so, he said this yesterday and C-Mills watched a lot of summer league.
08:32He said, yeah, you know, they have the 10 foul rule, but I'll be honest with you.
08:36I've never seen a lottery pick foul out.
08:38So if Peterson's sitting on nine, those refs just know not to call another one on them.
08:43Yeah.
08:43Cause they're not actually going to foul them out in the first game, or I guess it was
08:47their fourth game or whatever.
08:48By the way, players are allowed 10 personal fouls before fouling out, but it decreases to
08:53six fouls during the semis and the championship games.
08:57Do you know what overtime is in the summer league?
08:59The summer league, it's, I didn't know it was a big whole tournament.
09:02All 30 teams play at least five games during the 11-day event, and it's a tournament.
09:07Overtime is first team to score.
09:09Oh, it's the Elam ending?
09:12I was listening.
09:13No, no, it's not even the Elam ending.
09:14The Elam ending is when there's a set number of points to end the game, right?
09:19I don't know.
09:21Have you heard of the Elam ending?
09:22They did that in an all-star game once or something?
09:23Yes.
09:24Yeah, I remember that.
09:25So this is just, overtime is literally first to score?
09:27And Drew last night was like, so I watched Drew and Chris.
09:30I was so excited to have Drew and Chris on the call, because I think last year's summer
09:33league, they just showed the NBA TV feed or whatever.
09:36Right.
09:37So well done by Monumental to send everybody out there and let us have our guys on the
09:41call.
09:41And Drew's like, man, I'd be so pissed off if we fight for a whole game and get to
09:46overtime and it's the first bucket.
09:47Like, he's like, you got to at least make it a five-minute period or something.
09:51Dude, first of all, do they allow shooting fouls on, or do they give free throws for
09:58non-shooting fouls in overtime in the summer league?
10:01I have no idea.
10:02Because if you've got, if every player has 10 fouls, wouldn't you just like tackle dudes
10:06as soon as they came across half court knowing it's not, you're not going to run out of fouls
10:11and they're not going to shoot to end the game?
10:13I think they want it.
10:15I think there's some like spirit of competition.
10:17Oh, spirit of competition.
10:20But the difference is a lot of these young guys are desperate to make a roster.
10:24Oh, I know.
10:25But dude, the other one.
10:26So many of them have no chance.
10:28Will Riley looked good last night too.
10:29He did.
10:29And that's a real player on this roster.
10:31Yes.
10:32So many of them have no chance.
