00:00In this precocious young season so far for a Wizards team that is finally here to be
00:09obsessed about, enjoyed, and nurtured into hopefully a, I can't believe I'm saying this,
00:17NBA title contending team.
00:20Huh?
00:21I know it's so dumb to say that.
00:23But all the pieces are there.
00:26The 1-1 stud in DeBansta, the youth around him that's been layered in the last couple
00:34of years, and if they decide to keep Davis, which I am for the record, B-Mitch, 100% against,
00:46I, with no malice towards the man himself, I'm just a guy who looks at probabilities and
00:55history.
00:56And I am afraid the minute they pour more money into him is the minute things start cropping
01:04up.
01:05It's like a car that hasn't been in the shop for a while, but now you're going to put
01:10more money into it, it's going right back into the shop.
01:13I'd rather somebody else do that.
01:15I forgot who it was, was it, uh, describing this thing the other day saying like, if there
01:20was like a give and take, a two year extension, yes, for hell no.
01:28Because I don't know if his people would take two.
01:30Well, the thing of it is, if, if he feels comfortable with what they have around him and he can
01:38get
01:38a certain level for two years, that's fine.
01:43But it's going to be hard for, I think, anyone to give him four.
01:46Do you, do you think he himself has uncertainty, any sort of back of his mind fears of, I don't
01:56know if I can stay healthy for a long enough stretch to secure this last best bag or are
02:06athletes like him trained to never think negative?
02:09They probably would never think that, but I think also on top of, he understands if I
02:15can get a four year deal, whatever happens, happens once he gets the deal, right?
02:19So he's like, if you ask me, he's got to play close to 90% of the games from now
02:27until Christmas
02:28in order for him to either get something more from the whiz or to have another team go, you
02:34know what?
02:34I think he's finally right.
02:36Let's take a chance.
02:37He could probably do about 85% and another team may have a little bit more than the whiz
02:42and say, we need him this amount of time and they can, they can play off of it.
02:47Like to try to get, combat the, the new rules the NBA has where you got to play a certain
02:53amount of stuff.
02:54Yeah.
02:54You know, he, they would, I think there are teams out there willing to do that, but it's,
03:00it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a touchy one, you know, because if he goes off and start
03:06repeating what he did in the first game, you go, well, damn man, what if 34 and 12 in
03:12that opener?
03:13You also have to remember though, how many times he go to go to long haul?
03:18Yeah.
03:19So I, and listen, this is nothing where I think people that support him or either he
03:24could be upset at, this is your history.
03:26Yeah.
03:2734 and 12, then nine and a nine in the loss to the Raptors and then 19, six and four
03:35in
03:36the win at Chicago.
03:37So we'll see what happens tonight against Charlotte.
03:42DeBonsta's left ankle.
03:43How serious is it?
03:45Oh, I haven't heard much.
03:46We just heard it was being held out, but I, I, I saw his post on LinkedIn and I had
03:52to
03:52believe I had to say this, how many 19 year olds think like he does, he says, took me
03:5719 years to get here.
03:59The process doesn't always look the way you picture it.
04:02I had turns.
04:02I didn't see coming, but trusting it still got me where I needed to be.
04:06Now I'm sitting out my first games as a pro with an ankle, not what I drew up, but I've
04:11been patient before.
04:12And I know it pays off even when it doesn't happen the way you imagined a few more days.
04:16A hard work is nothing back soon.
04:19I read that and I was like, okay, this kid understands that you remember all in for week
04:24one.
04:25Remember that one?
04:25Mm-hmm.
04:26You can get to a point and force yourself back to try to impress people.
04:31Look how quick I got back.
04:32And then you won't be around long.
04:34True.
04:34Or you can say, let's let this thing go how it's supposed to.
04:37And then 15 years later, you're like, remember that time when I didn't play those first few
04:41games?
04:41People go, what are you talking about?
04:43You know what I mean?
04:44Right.
04:44And I think that when he got drafted, JP and I talked to him and we both were impressed
04:50at being that young.
04:52The questions you ask and just the calmness he had about himself, it was not typical for
04:58the average 18, 19-year-old superstar.
05:01Yeah.
05:02You know what I'm saying?
05:03Those guys walk around like this.
05:05And this kid, you know, his dad has great influence on him.
05:09Yeah, I think so.
05:10He has an air of maturity about him and of a good head on his shoulders that puts you
05:17at ease.
05:17Now, I always caution myself, I thought the same thing about Robert and I got snowed by
05:24Robert.
05:25I bought in fully to his podium act because the podium act with RG3 was immaculate.
05:32See, the podium act is one thing.
05:36But when you watch a person step away from the podium and you watch them, I've watched
05:42AJ do things and then you hear people and everybody says the same thing.
05:47When Rob was at the podium, I thought like you did.
05:51Until I started hearing other players and other people discuss it.
05:55I'm like, okay.
05:56So now, instead of me just going over to the podium, I had to start looking around the
06:00corner.
06:01And I quickly realized it was more of a me dude than anything.
06:04Oh, yeah.
06:05Yeah, yeah, yeah.
06:06The all-in for week one was one of the most damaging things that he did to his own career.
06:11Yeah.
06:11Because the dynamic in play in an NFL locker room where it's 53 alphas and you are one
06:19of those.
06:19And yes, you're the most important player on the team and the leader, de facto leader.
06:24You're still just one of 53.
06:26Yeah.
06:26So when you're there trumpeting yourself, this separate campaign, all in for week one,
06:32when you are trying to outdo other guys in these rep tests with pull-ups and I know
06:38that there was certain weight tests and he'd be like, watch, I'm going to do this better
06:42than everyone else.
06:43It turned people off.
06:44I wish I was on the team there.
06:46I'd have made him break his damn hole back trying to keep up.
06:51But I think getting back to DeBansta, he looks like he's got it.
06:56I just, I'm curious as to, so in today's NBA with a 1-1 young buck with an injury like
07:03an ankle, which is usually not that big of a deal, you tape those things up and you play
07:08through them.
07:08How much are they going to load manage him in his first year?
07:12That's kind of what I wonder.
07:14Now, we'll see.
07:15It's very early in the season.
07:16And here's the question, is this the most interest there has been for the Wizards since
07:202017?
07:21I said 2018 before the break.
07:23I meant to say 2017.
07:242017 Wizards finished fourth in the East.
07:26They were 49 and 33.
07:2849!
07:29That's the last time, Clary, they tickled 50.
07:33Just tickled it.
07:34They tickled the belly of 50.
07:36Every other franchise wins 50 games in this damn league.
07:39I think the last, look up the last time the Wizards won 50.
07:44The answer would be never.
07:46It was the Bullets who won 50.
07:49I don't think since the name change, they've never won 50.
07:52Yeah.
07:53They haven't won 50 games since 1978, 1979.
07:56Yeah, they won a championship then.
07:57Right.
07:58Right.
07:58They won a championship.
07:59Right.
08:00So.
08:00And they had what, rookie of the year and MVP.
08:03So in 2017, Wizards finished 49 and 33, went to the Eastern Conference Finals against the
08:09Celtics and lost in seven.
08:12That was your John Wall, Bradley Beal-powered team with splashes of bow buckets, Marcin Gortat,
08:24the Polish hammer, a little splash of some Trey Burke in there, some Mark Keefe Morris,
08:30the Kelly Oubre experience, Otto Porter.
08:37I mean, that was a funnish team, but let's be honest.
08:40Besides Wall and Beal, it was a pretty mangy collection of talent behind that.
08:46Would you have believe on that team that Kelly Oubre would be the only one who's probably
08:50still left?
08:51That's still in the league.
08:51Kelly Oubre is still balling.
08:53Okay.
08:54Well, Beal's still in the league.
08:55Yeah, Beal's around, but Kelly Oubre.
08:57Oubre is still getting stuff done.
08:58Is he still with the Sixers or did he leave the Sixers?
09:00He was with the Sixers last year.
