00:00This is one crucial summit and we've seen Mark Rutter, who is the chief of NATO, at pains in recent
00:07fraught weeks and months as things have really heated up, particularly around the situation with the Strait of Hormuz and
00:13the impact on people's economies.
00:15He's really been at pains to try and flatter, please, appease President Trump because he knows ultimately he has the
00:24power to break up NATO if he wants to.
00:27And he has arrived in Turkey for this summit and he has immediately, true to form, been highly disruptive.
00:35He has shattered any illusions of any attempt to display a united front.
00:42We've seen European countries admit that they haven't been paying their fair share into NATO as a result of Trump's
00:50justified, I would argue, complaints about that and pouring trillions of US dollars
00:56and not getting the same amount of money. We've seen that change.
00:58We've seen commitments from European countries really stepped up.
01:03And since this summit began, we've seen a number of allies within NATO making commitments, for example, to help to
01:11support Ukraine,
01:12which America was previously pretty much taking lead in, I think you could argue.
01:19But this has all changed now because Trump has arrived in Ankara, as you say, and he's disgruntled.
01:25He's made it clear that they didn't need any help, but he was testing his allies and he's gone further
01:31than that.
01:31He's been highly critical of the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer.
01:35But what people will be most concerned about is reiterating comments about Greenland,
01:40which, of course, is a sovereign territory that belongs to Denmark, a NATO country, saying that America would like control
01:47of it.
01:47You'll remember the consternation this caused back earlier in the year and he's even threatened to pull out American troops
01:55from Europe,
01:57which would ultimately spell the end of NATO.
02:01So it is a fraught summit. There is a lot riding on it.
02:05And I think the future of NATO is really under question at the moment.
