02:04Shona, just tell us what is on the agenda today.
02:09Well, good morning, Maeve.
02:11And let me just first give you an indication
02:12about the immense security apparatus
02:14that is taking place here in Ankara.
02:16It's something I've never seen before
02:18at any NATO summit,
02:19in any situation where I've been in,
02:21even when there's a threat of suicide bombs.
02:23The whole of the city is completely shut down.
02:25It's very difficult to get anywhere
02:26unless you're with a NATO official bus.
02:30Anytime you look to your left or your right,
02:32you have Secret Service, police, the army.
02:34It really is quite immense.
02:35It tells you about the volatility of the world,
02:37but also geographically where Turkey is located
02:40with a very long Syria border.
02:43And also, as we know, on several occasions,
02:45four occasions at least,
02:47the Turkish army had to intercept ballistic missiles
02:49coming from Iran.
02:51But just, I suppose, for a note of today,
02:53Donald Trump is on his route here to Ankara.
02:55He touches down around three o'clock.
02:57His first meeting will be with President Erdogan,
03:00the host of this summit.
03:02It is expected that there will be an announcement
03:04from Donald Trump
03:05that Turkey may rejoin the United States F-35 programme.
03:09They were suspended from that a number of years ago
03:11for security reasons.
03:12But that really kind of goes along
03:14with the nature of today
03:15because today is a day of announcements.
03:17The several hundreds of billions of dollars
03:20worth of defence spending
03:22will be announced to, of course, impress Donald Trump
03:24because, as we know,
03:25he's been railing against NATO allies
03:27for underspending for decades.
03:29And, of course, we'll hear a lot about
03:30what Mark Rutte, the NATO Secretary-General,
03:32is calling Trump's trillion dollars.
03:35That is, one trillion dollars of spending
03:37from Canada and Europe
03:39over the past 10 years
03:40since the first Trump administration.
03:42Now, I'm joined, of course, here live in Ankara
03:45by the Dutch Defence Minister.
03:47Minister, you also will have
03:49a lot of announcements today,
03:51over three billion euros.
03:52Definitely.
03:54We are delivering on our pledge of last year
03:56for the 3.5% extra spending
03:59because we think it's very much needed.
04:01We have a war on our continent.
04:03So we are having different co-productions
04:08and coalitions
04:09and working together with countries
04:12such as Germany, Belgium, UK,
04:15making sure that we invest in marine ships,
04:18in air defence,
04:20in various different capabilities for ourselves.
04:23Indeed, and that has to happen
04:24because the United States
04:25has made significant announcements
04:27of withdrawing capabilities
04:29available to NATO.
04:30What harm do you think that has
04:32on NATO overall?
04:34I don't think it will do any harm
04:36because I think that a strong Europe
04:38that is willing and able to deliver
04:40to make sure that it invests
04:42in defence spending
04:44makes a stronger NATO.
04:45So I think that what President Trump
04:48is asking, it is not new.
04:51Previous presidents also asked
04:52the same thing about NATO members.
04:55Please step up.
04:56Don't rely on one ally.
04:57And I think that he's rightful to do so.
04:59And if you look at me,
05:01I'm the Minister of Defence
05:02in the Netherlands
05:02and I think that I have to be responsible
05:04for the security and safety
05:05of my people
05:07within the alignment of the NATO.
05:09So it's very important
05:10that I also deliver,
05:11make sure that we invest
05:12and make sure that
05:13we are a strong partner.
05:15And of course,
05:16this summit has been
05:18described by Mark Rutte
05:19as a crucial summit
05:20because of this.
05:20But would you say
05:21that this is really the start
05:23of the Europeanisation of NATO?
05:25Europe really taking control
05:27of NATO in some ways?
05:28Well, I think we should be able
05:30to be strong partners.
05:32That is the key.
05:33So the US will, of course,
05:35be one of the most important allies,
05:38such as Turkey.
05:39Very strong armies,
05:40a lot of spending.
05:41and, but, you know,
05:43Europe has to deliver as well.
05:44So last year in The Hague,
05:46we promised a lot,
05:47but it's only worth those promises
05:49if you really deliver.
05:51So today I hope
05:52that I will see that
05:53from my colleagues
05:54and colleagues
05:55who are not delivering.
05:56I will be talking to them as well
05:58because this is,
05:59we should,
05:59we have to do this together,
06:00united.
06:01As you well know,
06:02we have a war
06:03on our own continent.
06:04We have an enemy facing us,
06:06Putin,
06:07and it's very important
06:08that we are also able
06:10to stand up.
06:12What we will hear
06:13from Donald Trump,
06:13undoubtedly,
06:14is his severe anger
06:16over what he says
06:18is NATO allies
06:18abandoning the United States
06:20when it comes to the war
06:21in Iran.
06:21Now we know that Germany
06:22and the UK
06:22did give the US
06:23plenty of basing rights
06:25and access to military bases,
06:26but that sort of,
06:27that doesn't really matter
06:28to Donald Trump.
06:29He is very annoyed at NATO.
06:30What do you expect from today?
06:31How will you respond?
06:32How will you placate him?
06:34Well,
06:35I think it's crucial
06:36that we all have
06:37a cool and calm head
06:39because,
06:40you know,
06:40we should be united.
06:42We have enemies against us
06:44and those enemies
06:45fear us with reason
06:46because united
06:47we stay strong.
06:48So,
06:48whatever today
06:50and tomorrow
06:50will happen,
06:52you will hear from me
06:53only this message.
06:54We need to be united.
06:56We need solidarity.
06:57We need to deliver.
06:59So,
07:00just stay calm
07:01and make sure
07:02that you do your job.
07:03In a word,
07:03do you think
07:04that the tide
07:05is turning
07:05and the war in Ukraine
07:06do you think
07:07that that's why
07:07Donald Trump
07:08is also being
07:08a bit more supportive
07:09because he likes
07:10to back the winner?
07:11I don't know
07:12what the reason might be
07:13but I think
07:14it's very important
07:15that we support Ukraine.
07:16You are completely right.
07:17There is a window
07:18and there is momentum
07:19right now
07:20and Ukraine
07:21is doing
07:22such a good job
07:23in standing firm,
07:24protecting
07:25and also
07:25not only
07:26its own country
07:27but the rest of Europe.
07:28so I hope
07:29that many other countries
07:31will also
07:31not only pledge
07:33but deliver
07:33for Ukraine.
07:35The Netherlands
07:35has been doing so
07:36since the beginning
07:37of the war.
07:37We are in the top
07:38three or five countries
07:39in the world
07:40supporting Ukraine
07:41and I hope
07:42to see many more
07:43colleagues
07:43adding up
07:45making sure
07:45that they have
07:46the car productions
07:47and drones
07:47the pearl packages
07:48I can continue.
07:50Exactly.
07:50We'll see an awful lot
07:51about it today
07:51but Minister Kinsakarius
07:52thank you very much
07:53for joining us
07:53on Euronews.
07:55Back to you in studio Maeve.
07:56Thank you so much
07:57Shona Murray there
07:58and to your guest
07:58the Minister of Defence
08:00for the Netherlands.
08:01And now
08:02we can head to France
08:02where a Paris court
08:04is due to decide
08:05whether Marine Le Pen
08:06can stand
08:07in the 2027
08:08presidential elections.
08:09It's a ruling
08:10with potentially
08:11far-reaching
08:11political consequences
08:12and one being watched
08:13very closely here
08:14in Brussels
08:15as she stands accused
08:16of misusing EU funds.
08:18For more
08:18we're joined in the studio
08:19by our French correspondent
08:20Maya Delaboum.
08:21So it's a big day
08:22for Marine Le Pen.
08:23Just remind us
08:24what is at stake
08:25and what does this mean
08:26for her political career?
08:27Yes Maeve
08:28it's a big day
08:29for France today.
08:30We will know
08:31if Marine Le Pen
08:32can run
08:33in the next
08:34presidential election
08:35in 2027
08:36so a year from now.
08:38And so today
08:39is really
08:40the verdict
08:41from an appeals court
08:43that will confirm
08:44a sentence
08:45that has already
08:46been imposed
08:47on her in 2025.
08:48If you remember
08:49Marine Le Pen
08:50was sentenced
08:51to four years
08:52in prison
08:52to a 100,000 euro fine
08:55and most importantly
08:56to a ban
08:57for her to hold
08:59public office
08:59for five years
09:00which means
09:01she couldn't run.
09:02So Marine Le Pen
09:03what she did
09:03is she appealed
09:04this verdict
09:05and now
09:06this Paris court
09:07this appeal court
09:08is supposed
09:09to confirm
09:10or not
09:10this verdict
09:11and we will know
09:12today at 1.30
09:13if Marine Le Pen
09:14can run
09:15in this
09:16presidential election.
09:17The sentence
09:18is linked
09:18to a case
09:19of embezzlement
09:20of EU funds.
09:21And if the decision
09:22goes against her
09:23we know
09:23Jordan Bardella
09:24is waiting
09:24in the wings
09:25right?
09:25Absolutely
09:26this
09:26if the verdict
09:27confirms
09:28that Marine Le Pen
09:29cannot run
09:29for the next
09:30presidential election
09:31it really opens
09:32the way
09:32for Jordan Bardella
09:33who is
09:34Marine Le Pen's
09:35political heir
09:35or his protégé
09:37let's say
09:38who is very
09:39well positioned
09:40right now
09:41to really
09:42enter the race
09:43and to
09:43he's a very
09:44successful candidate
09:45we have seen
09:46him very high
09:46in the polls
09:47he's even
09:48according to
09:49the latest poll
09:50is having
09:51a slight lead
09:52over Marine Le Pen
09:54he is seen
09:55clearly as
09:56the natural
09:57heir
09:57but the problem
09:58is he's also
09:59seen as a very
10:00young candidate
10:01he's only 30
10:02years old
10:02and he's still
10:03very inexperienced
10:04and this by contrast
10:06Marine Le Pen
10:07is clearly
10:07you know
10:08we've seen her
10:09as you said
10:10entering the race
10:10three times
10:11she's very
10:13experienced
10:13she has been
10:14in politics
10:14for many
10:15many years
10:15she has taken
10:16the lead
10:17over the party
10:18since 2011
10:19so she is
10:20the natural
10:21candidate
10:21but we will see
10:23in the days
10:24to come
10:24because we know
10:25this is imminent
10:26that Jordan Bardella
10:27will probably
10:27announce his
10:28candidacy
10:28very soon
10:29okay
