Sony has announced that beginning in 2028, all new PlayStation releases will be digital-only, marking the end of an era that started with the original PlayStation in 1994.
In this video, I break down what this means for gamers, collectors, game preservation, used game sales, and whether an all-digital future is really inevitable.
But that's only part of the discussion.
I also take a look at retro gaming and explain why we actually know surprisingly little about the complete libraries of many older consoles. Lost prototypes, regional exclusives, obscure budget releases, cancelled games, and forgotten hidden gems are still being uncovered decades later. Even systems we think we know inside and out may still have undiscovered games waiting to be found.
Is physical media really disappearing for good?
And what does that mean for preserving gaming history?

00:00A Sony-to-end physical disc for new PlayStation releases beginning in 2028 as gaming shifts
00:07fully online.
00:09The error of buying a brand new PlayStation game on a physical disc is officially coming
00:13to an end.
00:14Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that beginning in January of 2028, all new
00:19games released for PlayStation consoles will be distributed exclusively in digital format.
00:24After that date, new titles will only be available through the PlayStation Store or as digital
00:30purchases from participating retailers, marking one of the biggest changes in the history
00:34of the gaming industry.
00:36Sony says the decision reflects changing consumer habits, noting that the overwhelming majority
00:41of PlayStation players already purchased their games digitally rather than on physical media.
00:47In a statement published on the official PlayStation Blog, Sony explained that the move is a natural
00:51direction for the company as consumer preferences continue shifting toward digital purchases.
00:56According to Sony, digital media now significantly outpaces physical disc, and the company believes
01:02focusing entirely on digital distribution will better align with how most players access games
01:07today.
01:08The company also emphasized that games already released on disc, as well as titles scheduled
01:13to launch before January 2028, will continue to receive physical additions.
01:17The change only affects games released after the cutoff date.
01:22Sony's announcement marks the end of an era that began with the original PlayStation in 1994.
01:28For more than three decades, PlayStation games have been sold on physical media, starting
01:32with CDs before moving to DVDs and eventually Blu-ray discs.
01:37Collecting physical games has become an important part of gaming culture, with many players building
01:41shelves filled with box games, steelbooks, collector's editions, and limited releases.
01:47Beginning in 2028, however, those collections will no longer grow through newly released PlayStation
01:52games, as future titles will exist solely as digital downloads.
01:56But hey, you might get a digital steelbook.
01:59Although the announcement surprised many fans, Sony has been preparing for this transition for
02:04years.
02:04One of the clearest signs came in 2020 with the launch of the PlayStation 5.
02:09For the first time, Sony released two versions of its console, one equipped with an Ultra HD
02:13Blu-ray drive, and a less expensive digital edition that lacked any disc drive.
02:18At the time, some gamers questioned whether consumers would embrace a console that could
02:23only play downloaded games, but the digital edition proved successful enough for Sony to
02:27continue supporting the concept.
02:31Sony reinforced that strategy with the redesigned PS5 Slim, which introduced a removable disc drive.
02:41Rather than requiring every console to include an optical drive, Sony made it an optional accessory
02:47that players could purchase separately.
02:49While the system still allowed users to play physical games if they bought the add-on drive,
02:53many industry analysts viewed the redesign as another step toward a future where physical
02:58media would become optional before eventually disappearing altogether.
03:03One of the primary reasons behind Sony's decision is the continued growth of digital sales.
03:08According to Sony's financial reports, approximately 80% of full-game sales on PlayStation are now
03:14digital purchases.
03:16That figure has steadily increased over the last decade as broadband internet has become faster
03:23larger, storage capacities have grown larger, and digital storefronts have become the preferred
03:27shopping destination for millions of players worldwide.
03:31The financial benefits of digital distribution are also substantial.
03:34Every physical game requires manufacturing, printing, packaging, shipping, warehousing, and distribution
03:40before it reaches store shelves.
03:42Publishers must also account for unsold inventory, retail at discounts, and production costs that
03:47simply do not exist with digital releases.
03:50By selling video games exclusively through digital storefronts, Sony eliminates many of these
03:55expenses while keeping a larger share of every sale.
03:58Digital distribution also allows the company to launch games simultaneously around the world
04:03without worrying about shipping logistics or manufacturing delays.
04:08Another major advantage for Sony is greater control over pricing.
04:11Physical retailers have historically been free to discount games whenever they choose, often
04:16reducing prices shortly after launch.
04:18Digital storefronts however allow platform holders to determine exactly when games go on sale and
04:24by how much.
04:25This gives Sony much greater flexibility over pricing strategies while maintaining stronger
04:30profit margins over the lifetime of a game.
04:34The shift also reflects broader changes in how modern games are developed.
04:38Many of today's biggest releases are built around live service models that receive constant
04:43updates, downloadable content, seasonal events, and online features.
04:46Games such as Fortnite, Marvel Rivals, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty Warzone have demonstrated
04:53that millions of players are already comfortable downloading large games and receiving ongoing updates entirely through the internet.
05:00Even many traditional single player games now require substantial day one patches, meaning the disc often represents only part of
05:07the finished product.
05:08That doesn't make it right.
05:10Sony's expanding digital ecosystem has further reduced the importance of physical media.
05:16Services such as PlayStation Plus now offer subscribers access to hundreds of downloadable games, cloud saves, online multiplayer, game
05:25trials, and cloud streaming.
05:27For many players, building a digital library through subscriptions has become more appealing than purchasing individual physical copies.
05:35Despite these advantages, Sony's announcement has sparked considerable criticism from collectors and consumer advocates.
05:41One of the biggest concerns centers on ownership.
05:44When purchasing a physical game, players receive a tangible product that can be displayed, traded, loaded into friends, or resold
05:51after completion.
05:53Digital purchases, by comparison, are licenses tied to an online account and generally cannot be transferred or resold.
05:59Many gamers worry that moving entirely to digital will permanently eliminate the used game market that has existed for decades.
06:07Gaming preservation is another major concern.
06:11Historians and preservation groups have long argued that physical media plays an important role in ensuring games remain accessible decades
06:18after release.
06:19While modern games often require patches or online connectivity, physical discs still provide an additional layer of preservation.
06:27Not as much as it used to.
06:29Critics fear that an all-digital future increases the risk of games disappearing if licenses expire, storefronts close, or servers
06:37are eventually shut down.
06:39Internet accessibility remains another issue.
06:42Although broadband availability has improved dramatically, millions of players around the world still face slow internet speeds, monthly data caps,
06:50or unreliable connections.
06:51Downloading a modern game that exceeds 100GB may still take many hours, or even days in some regions.
06:59For those consumers, physical discs have remained a valuable alternative.
07:05Retailers are also likely to feel the impact of Sony's decision.
07:08Stores such as GameStop have historically relied on new game sales, used game trade-ins, and pre-owned software as
07:15major sources of revenue.
07:17Without new physical releases, one of the company's core businesses will gradually disappear.
07:22Retailers may instead focus more heavily on hardware, accessories, collectibles, gift cards, and digital download codes as the market transitions.
07:31Collectors' editions are also expected to change significantly.
07:34While premium editions featuring statues, art books, steelbooks, and other collectibles will likely continue to exist, many may no longer
07:42include an actual game disc.
07:45Instead, buyers could receive a digital download code packaged alongside the physical collectibles, a practice that several publishers have already
07:53adopted in recent years.
07:56Sony's announcement arrives as the gaming industry continues moving steadily towards digital distribution.
08:02Microsoft has already embraced digital gaming through the Xbox Series X, Xbox Game Pass, and cloud gaming initiatives, while PC
08:10gaming has become almost entirely digital through platforms such as Steam and the Epic Games Store.
08:15Nintendo remains the largest supporter of physical media among the major console manufacturers, although even it has begun experimenting with
08:23download-based distribution through game key cards for certain releases.
08:28Alongside ending physical game discs, Sony also confirmed plans to retire the PlayStation Store for the PlayStation 3 and Vita
08:36over the next year.
08:37I'll get to that also.
08:40So, whether players welcome or oppose the decision, Sony's announcement represents one of the most significant shifts in console gaming
08:47since the introduction of downloadable games nearly two decades ago.
08:50Beginning in January of 2028, purchasing a brand new PlayStation game on a Blu-ray disc will become a thing
08:57of the past.
08:58The future of PlayStation will exist entirely online, signaling the end of a physical format that helped define gaming for
09:06more than 30 years.
09:07For some players, the transition promises greater convenience and faster access to games.
09:12For others, it marks a loss of ownership, collecting, and preservation that physical media has represented since the original PlayStation
09:19first arrived on store shelves in 1994.
09:27Well, so, if you're upset by this, and many people are, and rightfully so, there's either two options.
09:37Quit gaming on modern consoles and go back to retro.
09:42Which actually may not sound so bad, which may not be such a bad idea if you really hate this
09:49new decision, or just deal with it.
09:51Now, let's, now, now, I've been not against digital downloads or digital distribution.
10:06I haven't, I wouldn't say I was against it.
10:08I was against that being the only way to get new games.
10:12Um, in 2022 and like 2023 even, I remember, uh, 2023 specifically, uh, when I was doing the Let's Discuss
10:22Gaming Podcast with Dr. Games 101.
10:25And I showed them all the games that I purchased that I got for money from friends and family for
10:31Christmas, there was no Xbox One games in there.
10:34This is 2023.
10:35There were no Xbox games, I didn't, or Xbox One games.
10:39I didn't buy, I didn't renew my Game Pass.
10:42But what I did get was games for PlayStation 3, one of them, anyway.
10:47Uh, Xbox game, and the rest of the games were for PlayStation and PlayStation 2.
10:53So, and one thing we do lose is, um, is this.
11:02Let's see if, um, so you can see it.
11:09Yeah, we, we, we lose, uh, this.
11:14Luckily, you know, if you got discs like this, um, short of someone breaking in your house, uh, then short
11:22of, then you're always going to have that game as long as, and you'll always be able to play it
11:26as long as you've got electricity and the console still works and the game still works.
11:32Um, so, and the thing is, also, another thing about, um, you know, we've, we've all done it.
11:40I don't think there's one gamer out there who has, like, an Xbox One or an Xbox, or 360 even,
11:48or a PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4 who says they never got a digital game.
11:52They never paid for one.
11:55And yes, if you were just a member of Xbox Live and free, enjoying the free downloads every month, that,
12:01that counts too because you were paying for Xbox Live.
12:03You were getting the free games through digital.
12:08So, unfortunately, uh, the thing is, you know, it's, there's no way to, uh, you know, this, there, uh, people
12:18are fearing, and rightfully so, that games could be taken away once licenses expire.
12:24That's a, that's a real, uh, possibility also.
12:28Like I said, you're not, you're not taking, uh, Batman the Brave and the Bold for the Wii away, unless
12:33you come into my house and take it.
12:37I can put that in my Wii U, even though it's an original Wii game, and play as much as
12:42I want.
12:45Um, so that's, so that's also a problem.
12:49Also, you know, you could, your account could be hacked, and then it could do something that's against terms of
12:54service, and then, if the console, um, developer believes you were at fault, then, sucks for you, I guess.
13:04Um, and you could end up losing your whole account.
13:08Your, all, any digital game purchases that you had.
13:12And honestly, that's why I wanted to talk about going back to retro.
13:15Now, I don't believe enough people are gonna do this.
13:19I don't believe enough people are gonna do this where they, uh, I don't believe enough people are gonna do
13:27this where it's gonna cause a dent in PlayStation.
13:30And honestly, Xbox and Nintendo, they're gonna follow suit too.
13:34It's not a question of if, it's just a question of when.
13:40But I think this is still gonna, I think this is still gonna help, uh, PlayStation, um, be profitable for
13:46PlayStation.
13:47Maybe not as profitable, but I still think it's gonna be enough where they, where this doesn't look like it's
13:55something that they have to reverse course in.
13:58Uh, but there's also something else I wanna talk about.
14:01When I said going back to retro.
14:04Many games that, uh, many consoles that came out in the past, Nintendo 64, Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Sega
14:11CD, and so on.
14:13How many games of those do we actually know?
14:17What I mean is, you know, the Nintendo 64, I'll use that example.
14:22In North America, 288 games were released for the Nintendo 64 total, um, total.
14:28Good games, bad games, whatever.
14:31How many of you could probably even name 29 of the 288?
14:38Um, I'll try it.
14:40And this, like I said, this is good, bad, whatever, as long as it came out on the N64 in
14:45North America.
14:46Uh, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, WCW vs. NWO World Tour, WCW vs. NWO Revenge,
14:54WWF WrestleMania 2000, uh, WWF, um, No Mercy, Mario Party 1, 2, and 3, Turok, Dinosaur Hunter, GoldenEye 007, so
15:04we're at 11 so far.
15:06Um, let's see, uh, Perfect Dark, that's 12.
15:12Um, what else?
15:15Uh, NFL Quarterback Club, 98.
15:17If they came out on N64 in North America, it counts, 13.
15:22Uh, Jeremy McGrath Supercross, 2000.
15:25All Star Baseball, 99.
15:27Uh, and Conker's Bad Fur Day, that's six, that brings it up to 16.
15:32Uh, Quest 64, that's 17.
15:35Um, Destruction Derby 64, that's 18.
15:39Um, Turok Dinosaur Hunter, 19.
15:43I think Turok 2 Seeds of Evil also had an N64 port, so that's 20.
15:47Beetle Adventure Racing, that's 21.
15:49Um, Extreme G, and I think San Francisco Rush 2049 also came out on the N64, so that's 23.
16:00Um, so what, what else?
16:03Uh, just five games away.
16:06Battle Tanks, Battle Tanks Global Assault, that's 25.
16:10Just four more.
16:12Um, Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine, even though it's a terrible game, 26.
16:20Uh, did I say Beetle Adventure Racing?
16:27I don't think I did.
16:2827.
16:29Uh, come on, there's two more.
16:32I'll just, WCW Nitro, 28.
16:37And, uh, da-da-da-da, Wetrix, 29.
16:40There you go.
16:42You see how hard that was?
16:43That's the point, though.
16:45You see how hard that was, and how many games I had to include just to get to 29, when
16:50there's 288 out there?
16:51The point I'm making is, if you're gonna, um, if you're gonna go back to Retro, which might not be
16:58so hard, which might not be such a bad idea, especially if finances are a big problem, there's many games
17:05out there for consoles that we haven't played.
17:10Why not try out those?
17:12I found out, I found some great games that I never even knew came out.
17:16Um, I'll go back to this, um, Apocalypse on PlayStation.
17:21You know how I found out about this game?
17:25I found it at a garage sale, for the original PlayStation.
17:29Awesome game, unfortunately can't get past the final boss, but that's beside the point.
17:35So, you know, maybe just go, and with game reviews also, um, not being as obscure as they used to
17:45be on YouTube and maybe even other websites, you can find out almost a review on any past game and
17:53see if it's worth your trouble or not.
17:57And just, yeah, just randomize like an N64 game name, maybe use ChatGPT or Gemini just to suggest an N64
18:07game.
18:08Uh, maybe using artificial intelligence is better than just suggesting one randomly.
18:15Um, and then, and then pull up a review on it and see how much it goes for online.
18:21Build a, you could continue gaming that way, and like I said, with hundreds of games, you know, the NES
18:27had like almost 800 in North America, the N64 had 288 in North America.
18:33That's many games not just to look through and research and find reviews on, but many games that just, we
18:41never knew about when they came out.
18:42Um, because they didn't have enough money for a commercial or whatever.
18:50So, yeah, um, if you really hate this digital playstation, uh, digital future that PlayStation is heading towards, and I
18:57believe Microsoft and Nintendo will also head towards, maybe, maybe going retro is the way to go.
19:04Go.
