00:00The Dutton Ranch finale has just dropped, and it's safe to say that this was easily the best
00:04episode of the season. With Rip and Beth discovering that Bueller was essentially
00:09using her cattle as mules for narcotics to get into the country, Beth and Rip disrupted the
00:13piece by making it clear that they weren't going to stand to be involved in any of that.
00:18We had main character deaths, a firefight taking place, and a cliffhanger of an ending that's
00:23going to paint an extremely dark direction for the next season. So, with that, let's break down
00:29the episode, explain the ending, and I'll share what I thought of it. Here is Dutton Ranch episode 9,
00:35ending explained. Just to let you know, this video will contain spoilers. Carter was taken.
00:41Okay. Well, all season Carter's whining has been getting increasingly more and more frustrating,
00:47and when it mattered most, and when all he needed to do was listen to Beth and Rip,
00:51he decided to ignore them and do his own thing. Carter was planning on running away with Oriana
00:57after she found out that she was pregnant. He was basically just acting like a bum just like Dwight
01:02was in wasting his days away sitting outside and drinking cans of beer in the exact same spot where
01:08Dwight used to do it. Carter felt like he didn't want to be anybody. So now, well, look where that's
01:14got him. If he had nobody, he'd then have nobody to come and save him. Following Beth and Rip not
01:20being
01:21eliminated by the cartel members that Mariana ordered to take them out because they were getting
01:25in the way of the operation that had been running on the Temple Ranch for 15 years with Beth and
01:30Rip
01:30also being successful in taking out those that were after them. Mariano knew that he needed to
01:35hit Beth and Rip where it hurt most which was with Carter. Carter was constantly ignoring Beth and Rip's
01:41calls. Even when Oriana said to him that something was going down in their place, he showed no care
01:47whatsoever. And even when he spoke to Beth when she asked him where he was, he said,
01:52it doesn't matter. It was just pure bratty childlike behavior for no reason whatsoever.
01:58Carter has actually frustrated me quite a lot in this season, and his negligence and selfish behavior
02:03is what's landed him in this situation. When he heard a knock at the door, he believed that it was
02:09going to be Oriana, as they agreed to run away together and start a life. However, he was met with
02:15Mariano's Miguel equivalent who knocked him down, took him away, and was now going to be used as leverage
02:20and looking to get Beth and Rip out of the equation. We've seen a more caring Beth in this show
02:25compared
02:26to Yellowstone and a version of her that doesn't want to break anything that she cares about.
02:31However, with her saying that she felt like the world was going to open up and swallow everything
02:35that she loved, this is exactly what was happening. So, in the next season, it seems like we're going to
02:42see Beth and Rip actually going on the offensive in order to get Carter back from Mariano.
02:47The ending explained, what we found out in the finale was that Mariano actually took the fall
02:52for the murder that Bueller carried out on Robel and Bueller's father blamed him, which is why he
02:57was sent away. He was sent to Mexico, but with Mariano wanting Juane to be raised on the ranch,
03:03he wanted her to take care of him, hence why she did. This is why there was the cover story
03:08about
03:08Mariano dying because it would point towards the murder that was committed if it ever came out that
03:13he was alive. This is also where his anger for the temple ranch then began because when he got to
03:18the border of Mexico, his wife ended up getting caught up in something and was killed. Mariano was
03:24called by Hayne in the previous episode and he heard about Robel being left the ranch which he
03:29didn't want to be the case because he viewed him as a liability. He believed that it should have gone
03:34to Hayne because he was the one that was more sensible. As Mariano put it, Bueller picked blood over
03:40competence. Bueller basically got into this mess with the cartel because around 15 years ago with
03:46the drought that occurred in Texas, it basically left the temple ranch on its last legs. So, in order
03:52to keep the lights on, Hayne reached out to his father and found a way that they'd be able to
03:57operate
03:57and continue to make money. This was through the transportation of narcotics into the country
04:02through the cattle. However, as we saw with Bether, she wanted a way out of it because it was all
04:08getting too much and she felt trapped. This is why she thought Beth and Rip were the most efficient
04:13people to take it over because Rob. Rip and Beth were obviously fuming with beer and were disappointed
04:19in her for lying to them and also angry for what they got them caught up in. Mariano actually tasked
04:25to kill his brother Robel because he wanted the liability out of the equation. He wanted the ranch to
04:30be left to Hayne and he actually wanted to make Puer aware that she'd frustrated him by bringing in
04:35strangers. Hayne did actually end up killing Rob Willow. And I was surprised that he went through
04:41with it because back in episode 2, when the brothers were facing off with one another in the dead of
04:46night, Rob Will basically said that his brother didn't have the minerals to go through with it but
04:51he eventually did. When Orianna came down and screamed after seeing her father's body, it looked like she
04:57caught a glimpse of the car. So, I wonder if that's going to come back to get Hayne. I did
05:03find it a
05:03bit weak of Hayne to go running to daddy and then essentially sit in his shadow the entire time
05:08that he was there and just look to impress him. With Mariano not receiving what he wanted, he tasked
05:14his men to take out Beth and Rip, which they tried to do but failed miserably. They held their own
05:19on
05:19the ranch and they made sure that they never lost the ground. One of the men that was there was
05:24captured by Rip and he wanted answers from him. Mariano was considered to be the godfather and he made
05:29a pact in order for his men to be protected from the saint of death. So it meant that they
05:34weren't
05:34going to spill any information on him whatsoever and whereabouts in Mexico he was based. I did find
05:40it a particularly interesting scene when Mariano was in the church denouncing Satan when in reality
05:45he was an evil man himself. When Beth got the call at the end of the episode from Mariano when
05:51she was
05:51told that Carter was taken, it seemed like they were now going to be going after him. Rip said,
05:57they don't want Carter. They want us. And Beth said, then they're going to effing get us.
06:02If I'm being honest, I thought we could have potentially seen Rip go back inside and take
06:07it out on the guy that tried to kill him and was also a part of the enemy, but we
06:11didn't see that
06:12happening. My review of the episode, I thought this was a great season finale. The tension was there
06:18from the off and the revelation about the cattle carrying was something that took the show in a
06:22completely different direction and allowed the plot to open up for season 2 with Rob Will ending up
06:27dying. It was something that I thought would happen because it never felt like he was going to be the
06:32big bad villain of the show. But I am really glad to see we got Rob Will and Rip having
06:37it out and
06:38Rip absolutely owning him. The scene with Rob Will and Oriana definitely set up his death in the perfect
06:43way. He made peace with her, said that he hadn't been that good of a father and that she was
06:48the only
06:49thing. On the ranch that wasn't crooked. So, at least he got a good final scene with her.
06:55Bueller's face was shocked when she walked in and saw him on the ground. So, I think we could see
07:01a
07:01different side to Bueller moving forward, too. In terms of Carter, he's just outright an annoying
07:07character. Now, I just don't understand why it is that he's basically cutting all ties with Beth and
07:13Rip when they've given him everything he could have ever asked for. They wanted one piece of
07:18information from him, just one, his location. And that could have been the very thing that would
07:23have saved him. With him also agreeing to run away with Oriana, somebody who quite literally tossed him
07:29to the curb a couple of episodes back. It was a weak move from him. The firefight was a great
07:35moment
07:35in the episode as well. It had tension, action, and you didn't know who was going to end up getting
07:40hurt or not. When all got hit, I did fear that it was going to be curtains for him. This
07:46finale was
07:47also an episode that allowed us to see the best in Rip and him being the hardcore cowboy that he
07:51is
07:52in just owning anybody that he comes in sight with. I found it to be quite refreshing seeing a slightly
07:57different side to Beth over the course of this show. We've seen a softer, more caring side,
08:03especially towards Carter, and we're seeing her want to be just that little bit more gentle.
08:08I also really liked Everett in this episode. I respect the fact that he stood by his core beliefs
08:13and was prepared to get rid of Bueller because he didn't like the line of work that she was involved
08:18in. One performance in character that I feel deserves a mention is Mariano. He only had one
08:24episode to show us that he's the big bad boss. And boy did he, he came across like the devil
08:30himself
08:30and somebody that holds a vendetta against a family that he was once so loyal to that tossed him to
08:35the
08:35side all of those years ago. Honestly, I can't wait to see how the character develops even more in the
08:41next season. I did feel the ending was a little bit like Landman, but there were enough differences
08:47to make me feel like it wasn't just a direct taking of it. Overall, I really enjoyed Dutton Ranch.
08:53I thought it was the perfect way to continue on the Yellowstone story, and despite being skeptical of
08:58it to begin with, it far exceeded my expectations. I wish there were more episodes, to be honest,
09:05and I hope when it comes back for season 2, it gives us a 10 episode season.
09:09The performances are great, the environment of the ranch is enjoyable to be on, the character
09:15development has been strong, and the plot development was exactly what it needed to be.
09:20Bring on season 2, so there you have it. Dutton Ranch episode 9 ending explained.
