00:35honestly very close to my heart.
00:37If you're like me and you grew up in Australia, you probably heard about the Australian dream.
00:43You know the one where owning a house on a big block of land, raising a family, having a decent
00:48paying job and living a laid-back life with plenty of time for barbecues, footy and weekend surf trips.
00:55But let's be 100% honest, that dream is dead. And I don't mean that it's struggling, I mean for
01:00most Australians it's completely out of reach these days.
01:04So in this video we're going to be breaking down exactly why the Australian dream is a fantasy in 2025,
01:10what killed it and what the future actually looks like for Aussies trying to build a life today.
01:16But just before we do, I want to point out that the purpose of this video isn't to shit on
01:21Aussies or Australia at all.
01:23I'm making this video because I actually care about the country I grew up in.
01:26See, I am a second generation Aussie on my mum's side.
01:30Her parents left Europe to escape World War II for a better future for their family.
01:34And it's honestly really sad to see that young Aussies are now leaving the country at an alarming rate because
01:41they can no longer feel like they can build a sustainable future for themselves and their own family.
01:47So in just two generations, the great Aussie dream has turned into a nightmare for many people.
01:53Now, that's not everyone obviously, but this is the first time in history that young Aussies are in a worse
01:59financial position than their parents.
02:01And to me, that just seems off.
02:04All right, let's get into it.
02:05So starting with the housing prices, which are absolutely out of control.
02:09I've covered this in previous videos, but I'm going to talk about it again briefly.
02:13Do you remember when a home in Sydney or Melbourne was expensive at half a million dollars?
02:18Well, now you'd be lucky to find a shed for that price.
02:21I'm not kidding.
02:22In the 90s, the average house in Sydney cost about four times the average salary.
02:27In comparison today, it's over 12 times the average wage, and it's not just Sydney.
02:32It's Melbourne, Brisbane, and even smaller cities like Hobart, Adelaide, Perth.
02:37The prices have skyrocketed over the last few years.
02:40And the fact is wages haven't kept up.
02:43Interest rates have risen and investors have snapped up properties, leaving everyday Aussies as full-time renters for life.
02:50So that means unless you were lucky enough to buy a couple of decades ago or have rich parents,
02:56home ownership is becoming a pipe dream for most young Australians.
03:00And secondly, the cost of living is crushing families.
03:03It's not just housing that's out of reach.
03:06Everything is expensive now.
03:08Groceries are up 20% to 30% in just a few years.
03:11Fuel is $2.50 plus per litre in some places.
03:15Rent, through the roof.
03:17Energy bills, good luck on keeping the lights on.
03:19Meanwhile, wages are stagnant and full-time secure jobs are getting rarer and rarer.
03:25More people are stuck in casual work, gig economy jobs, or juggling multiple part-time roles
03:30just to keep their heads above water and pay their bills.
03:33So my question is, how are families supposed to get ahead when the basics are unaffordable?
03:38Number three, the work-life balance myth.
03:41We Aussies love to tell ourselves that Australia is this laid-back paradise
03:45where people finish work at 5pm and spend their afternoons at the beach.
03:49But that's not reality for most people anymore, especially living in big cities.
03:53Come on.
03:55Don't make a liar out of me.
03:56The real Australia is long hours with unpaid overtime,
04:01two incomes needed just to afford a normal life,
04:04a 40-hour work week that barely covers the bills,
04:07and even if you do have a decent job, good luck taking time off.
04:12Australians are some of the most overworked people in the world,
04:15but we're also too scared to take holidays because we're worried about losing our jobs.
04:20Next up is immigration infrastructure and the population boom.
04:23So, in 2025, Australia's population is absolutely booming,
04:28and while immigration's always been a part of the country's growth,
04:31the government's bringing in hundreds of thousands,
04:34if not millions, of people a year without fixing the infrastructure first.
04:39Public transport is overcrowded and unreliable.
04:42Hospitals, they're at breaking point.
04:44Roads, nightmare.
04:46And schools, they're underfunded.
04:48Immigration itself isn't the issue.
04:49Aussies have always embraced new cultures,
04:52but the lack of planning has made life harder for everybody.
04:55More people with the same resources, yet higher costs.
04:59And all this means is that the next generation is giving up on the Australian dream.
05:04Millennials and Gen Z aren't lazy.
05:05They're just realizing that playing by the old rules won't work anymore.
05:09Why spend 20 years saving for a deposit
05:12when you could move overseas and actually afford to live?
05:15Why work a 9-to-5 job you hate when you could start an online business
05:19or do some sort of remote work that you can actually scale?
05:23Why kill yourself trying to buy a home in Australia
05:25when renting long-term or living abroad is just a smarter option?
05:30Aussies are moving to places like Thailand, Bali, Vietnam, and even Europe
05:34because they can live a better life for a fraction of the cost they do in Australia.
05:38And honestly, I don't blame them, and I'm one of them.
05:41The question is, what can you do?
05:42All right, so the Australian dream is dead, right?
05:45But that doesn't mean you have to settle for a life of struggle.
05:48Here's what you can do.
05:49Stop chasing outdated goals.
05:51Home ownership isn't the only path to success.
05:55Look at international options.
05:56If Australia is unaffordable, consider countries where your dollar goes further
06:00or where you're treated better.
06:02Invest in skills, not just property.
06:05Jobs are changing, especially with things like AI.
06:07The internet has opened up way more opportunities for people.
06:11Build multiple income streams.
06:13So the days of relying on one paycheck isn't safe anymore.
06:16Side hustles, online businesses, and investing are key.
06:20If COVID-19 taught me anything, it's that nobody's job is safe.
06:23The system is broken, but that doesn't mean you have to be trapped by it.
06:27I guess what I'm trying to say is that the world's changed,
06:29and Australia, along with many other countries, hasn't really kept up.
06:33The old dream was to own a house, work a stable job, retire comfortably,
06:38and yet the new reality is that it's high cost of living, low wages,
06:43and a system that pretty much benefits the rich.
06:45So it's time for a new dream, one that actually works for modern Australians and young people.
