00:02well how are you serious ding power he's gotta go over 200 yards timmy smith you're talking
00:12about a one game wonder i don't remember seeing him again uh after that season
00:20everybody still requests me to do the shuffle hey man let me see the shuffle i kind of look
00:26at him man i'm uh i'm 40 now i don't do the shuffle no more dude are you serious
00:55nfl history is filled with stars who shined over a long period of time
01:00they are the legends of the game 180
01:06but through the years other players have had their 15 minutes of fame
01:10shooting stars who were great for just one season one game or even just one play
01:18being a hero is not necessarily a permanent condition a person can rise to the occasion
01:25for one moment and become a hero mike jones tackled dyson here's o'donnell big blitz and he fires a
01:33pass and it pulled in and intercepted at the 40 larry brown with a big interception all of a sudden
01:38people think that that represents what he's capable of doing on a bigger scale and it doesn't
01:42it represents what it was i mean you fall in love with a chapter and you assume that that's going
01:46to be the book and it's not that's that's a bar
01:52only shot wonder of all time mike jones
01:56to me super bowl heroes should have regal names
02:02lynn swan
02:05terrell davis
02:08davis whip us and lose and then there's mike jones
02:11you know mike jones i know mike jones one of the most common names in the english language
02:18and one of the greatest plays in super bowl history mike jones tackled dyson at the one yard
02:25line as time ran out that is the first time in the history of the national football league
02:31that a super bowl literally came down to 18 inches i mean mike jones personifies one hit wonder
02:38forget about one good year he had one big play our number 10 one shot wonder is famous for stopping
02:45kevin dyson on the one inch line to win super bowl 34 one play an 11-year career
02:53before the rams mike jones was an average linebacker for the silver and black after the rams let him go
03:00he was a run-of-the-mill linebacker for the black and gold i could give you probably 1600 bios
03:07off the
03:07top of my head in the national football league right now which i'd be pretty proud of and mike jones
03:12wouldn't be one of them mike jones was one of those linebackers that doesn't make a ton of big plays
03:20he actually went to the rams and for a good portion of his career was a special teams player
03:25worked his way into the regular defense jones was a cog in the machine no one noticed especially
03:32in the greatest show on turf
03:40but he wasn't anonymous among his coaches and teammates to them he played a critical role on the
03:46squad mike jones was important to the team beyond that one play and we brought him in there
03:54as a free agent from the raiders because mike white had coached him at the raiders and thought
03:58his leadership and his contribution to the defense plus his growth as a player was all in front of him
04:03mj the steadying influence the cop he is the captain he's the guy that's always going to come in the
04:09same he's going to work hard every day be where he's supposed to be three years in a row he's
04:15been
04:15voted as the inspirational leader of the defensive football team he's just one of those kind of guys
04:21thank you buddy all right now we got one how about a cough drop oh how about a cough drop
04:27from you
04:29and mike jones was a missouri native so he fit right in and he was a good player
04:37yeah tremendous leadership we're almost there
04:40here and one shot wonder made the big play because he did just as he was told all right guys
04:49last play in the game he played the scheme as he was coached to play it and i'd say if
04:56you pick one
04:56guy you would like to see make that play and being recognized as a guy to make play it won
05:02the game you'd
05:03like to pick a mike jones because everything else he brought to the table one yard short
05:10st louis the gateway to the west is now the gateway to the best football team in the world
05:19still to come on top 10 one-shot wonders what is he doing the rise
05:28the number nine one-shot wonder of all time jim o'brien
05:34yes sir set to go snap ball down kick up kick is on the way and it is good
05:43adam vinatieri is known for kicking game-winning field goals in the super bowl
05:47once again
05:49but jim o'brien did it first nine seconds showing on the clock
05:55in 1970 our number nine one-shot wonder was a rookie who specialized in rubbing the veterans
06:01the wrong way
06:05because he came in with long hair a lot of the veterans used to call him a dope head
06:12in those days hippies and beatniks you know their karma was interfacing at the apex of their life so
06:17they're viral and blah blah blah he wouldn't really like that he just happened to have longer hair
06:22right look at the hippie back then kickers did more than just kick o'brien was actually better
06:30known coming out of college as a pass catcher we drafted him as a receiver he was an excellent
06:38receiver out of the university of cincinnati he was a football player he wasn't just a kicker
06:50it's good that o'brien could do other things because he wasn't a very good kicker missing nearly
06:56as many as he made the super bowl five kick was his only big claim to fame going into that
07:04game he
07:05even hoped he wouldn't be needed on the orange bowl state-of-the-art astroturf surface he said to
07:11me hope they're like counting on me sunday i said why he said i can't get good stuff he was
07:15a straight
07:16head conventional kicker he said i take it did it like a seven iron and the way i kick my
07:20foot's
07:20bouncing into the ball i'm kicking the top half of the ball gun goes back to throw again sets up
07:25fires
07:28we get into the game united sits back in for the touchdown he misses the extra point so you can
07:35imagine what my feelings were the rest of the day about the game coming down to jim o'brye with
07:41under
07:42two minutes to play mike curtis's interception set up just that scenario
07:57he was three in that terrible
08:05uh
08:15wonder the beatnik had a chance to win it
08:22nine seconds showing on the clock the cowboys and the colts all tied up at 13 to 13
08:28moral is kneeling there is the stop the kick is up and it's long enough it hits
08:37a 32-yard field goal by jimmy o'brien it is good he nailed that one it would clear up
08:44into the sand
08:45i think you got to give a lot of credit to that kid he not only saved our super bowl
08:50rings but he
08:51saved his locks that day because once we got inside billy ray smith said boys we can't do it we
08:57can't cut
08:58the kids hair off we planned on doing just that it was going to be fun so we had a
09:02little ceremony
09:03until over he had saved his hair the number eight one shot wonder of all time rob johnson well i
09:14think
09:14you know rob johnson was a guy who really got rich on one game he had a great game for
09:20jacksonville
09:21parlayed it into a 25 million dollar contract in week one in 1997 rob johnson filled in for an
09:28injured mark for now he passed for almost 300 yards through for two touchdowns and ran for another
09:43after burnell returned our number eight one shot wonder went back to the bench
09:48but that off season the bills paid him 25 million to be their quarterback of the future
09:55he never even finished after that he was on one breezy one game and against an expansion team
10:04i'd like to see him go and try that in 2000
10:16spending money wade phillips identified him as his guy his quarterback wade the first year coach in
10:24buffalo with his quarterback and felt they would be a duo for many years to come
10:32here's the thing teams are desperate to come up with franchise type quarterbacks and when rob johnson
10:38flashed the little bit of talent that he had everybody became enamored with the guy rob johnson is
10:45is the classic guy who people fall in love with what he looks like as opposed to what he is
10:51he could draw him up on a board and this is what a quarterback would look like so you look
10:57at all
10:57those things and
11:02god and then once you've met him and you around him you know you wouldn't you wouldn't buy carpet from
11:08the guy he wasn't the greatest team guy in terms of guys on the team liking him he sort of
11:20separated
11:21himself some i mean these are men and they're getting paid and you know you're out here doing
11:26a job and uh my feeling is you got to take care of yourself first before you can worry about
11:31anything
11:31else rob seemed very uncomfortable with the idea of being the number one guy and watching him in
11:39practice you could see my face can't die there was something lacking he just didn't feel the game
11:48he certainly didn't feel what was happening around him in the pocket knowing how to adjust
11:53pressure sack no one wanted to give up on a play he would hold the ball hold it only took
11:57way too
11:58many sacks hung on way too long that time you know anyway when every time he got hit i mean
12:03something
12:04could break or shatter every time he did get hit and became known as robo sack it's time this gave
12:10his
12:10back up enough thug flutie he is the guy he is the leader flutie let it go oh full of
12:18a touchdown
12:19he's what the bills need and rob johnson isn't he is a miracle man man i believe
12:26this in a city miracle game sit back to wide chat played well it was another notch against our number
12:32eight and no he didn't play well he fumbled three times and committed a safety
12:50obviously everybody knows we had the game one with rob you know in hindsight you know doug doug
12:56probably would have won the game so you know that's that's kind of way we look at it
13:00the controversy lasted another two years after that game in 2001 flutie was cut one year after
13:08that robo sack was let go as well
13:14coming up on top 10 one shot wonders one of the uglier dances i've ever seen whatever happened to
13:20the man behind the shuffle david sims led the league in touchdowns in 78 and don woods had seven
13:29straight 100 yard games in 74. but in each case their bodies broke down and curbed promising careers
13:40this tale played out again when another woods shuffled into cincinnati in 1988
13:47the number seven one shot wonder of all time icky woods hello welcome to the precinct what would you
13:55like this evening what do you recommend well we have a popular steak of siacin and a very delicious
14:00chicken icky chicken icky oh but it's really good few running backs have made a name for themselves as
14:08quickly as elbert icky woods as a rookie he burst onto the nfl scene leading the league with a
14:155.3 yards per carry average when the bingos came out of training camp that year was coslet said
14:24woods is a very good player he fits with what we want to do and there was that stretch style
14:30offense
14:30and he said woods has read that beautifully from the first time we gave him the ball
14:38woods was a quick study partly because his college unlv had run a pro-style offense
14:44most of the things that they were running here was a lot of the things that i've already ran in
14:49college
14:49so i kind of knew you know exactly what to do
14:54what the team was doing for him what he was doing for the team it was a perfect match our
15:03number seven
15:03one shot wonder changed his number halfway through the year from 31 to 30 and he racked up numbers
15:10rushing for almost 1300 yards and scoring 18 touchdowns
15:22he also added a new chapter to the history of end zone dances when teammate ricky dixon challenged him
15:29to come up with something unique i was like rick rick rick check this out bro this is what i'm
15:34gonna do when i
15:35score one two three this way one two three this way one two three back this way i'm gonna hop
15:40back three
15:41times and spike tomorrow he's like oh man that's gonna be live like yeah dog yeah you can't see it
15:48because my face came back he would do a little whirl he would twirl his fingers after that you know
15:54what
15:54when you mentioned nicky woods i didn't think who he was for a second see the bengals guy who danced
15:58yeah
15:58he is you know i don't think people really remember much beyond the dance right now i'm still having
16:03horror memories about that dance is one of the uglier dances i've ever seen you're gonna choreograph
16:08something at least have it be good i don't think icky will ever be on dancing with the stars put
16:13it that
16:13way regardless of what you thought of the dancing you caught on faster than the macarena this
16:24hero the owner paul brown joined in the fun i said icky i note your dance personally i don't think
16:32much of it but my wife likes it and with that i leaned over in my right foot and over
16:38in my left
16:39foot moved a little bit though in the old days they thought that was really funny you know he he
16:45parlayed that to a few bucks for himself my son icky got the scottler supreme sl because it has four
16:52wheel drive fe3 suspension and because test proved that the new t-bird lx just couldn't run the slalom as
16:59fast
17:08the bengals had won the super bowl it was mcdonald's and ford as i recall were going to be big
17:13endorsement
17:13deals for him and the the shuffle was going to be incorporated a little bit bangles didn't win that
17:18super bowl 23 and uh and those kind of evaporated on them in week two of the 1989 season his
17:24future
17:25began to evaporate as well a torn acl was the first in a string of injuries that shuffled him
17:31off the nfl stage oh my you hate to see that it happens you know with with running backs like
17:39that
17:39you just never really know how long the wheels will stay on i mean guys like that they they are
17:44literally
17:45one hit wonders you you don't say that's why he's on the list genius i i hate when people state
17:55the
17:55obvious you know my my charger actually charged my phone that's why it's called a charger
18:05how much of a stoop can you be
18:11hot chocolate get your hot chocolate we got liquor in it makes the game go by more funner come on
18:17these days our number seven one-shot wonder still wears bangles jersey selling hot chocolate and
18:24autographs to raise money for his charity everybody still requests me to do the shuffle hey man let me
18:39see the shelf you know i kind of look at him man i'm uh i'm 40 now i don't do
18:44the shuffle no more dude
18:45you know what i'm saying i i said i'm i'm barely walking man i'll tell you what i'll do a
18:49shuffle
18:50and i i'll give him one of these do the shuffle but like i don't know eight years after this
18:56he was
18:56doing get some cold cuts get some cold cuts whoa 46 that's me get some 44 that's me get some
19:06cold cuts
19:07get some cold cuts
19:12and one of these and they mad it doesn't do the shuffle for free now
19:16because why what's that man i said that's that's the best shuffle i can get you man
19:23the number six one of all time percy howard yep percy howard the immortal percy howard i had no
19:32idea who that even is percy howard uh percy howard he's my mailman right who is percy howard percy
19:41howard is a truly remarkable
19:52and that was the only passy carfell career
19:56well percy howard was a was a basketball player the cowboys had had success drafting guys who were
20:02college basketball players so they brought him in really good receivers they had drew pearson and
20:08they had golden richards so they didn't have to play this kid they had the luxury of being able to
20:13develop them but they thought there was a lot there to develop going into super bowl
20:18the first touchdown of super bowl 10 that's a milestone
20:24and our number six one shot wonder was a long shot to get into the game
20:29let alone catch a pass he hadn't had a reception all season percy howard's big break only came
20:35because golden richards was knocked out of the game by hall of fame cornerback mel blunt
20:41mel blunt really beat on golden richards something unmerciful that day
20:46oh they're just trying to get each other's attention i guess
20:49and well i'm knocking them out of the game with uh with crack ribs
20:53so percy howard had a play now once in the game howard of zero career catches and seemingly zero common
21:01sense started trash talking with blunt he and i got into a verbal confrontation out on the field
21:09i felt that i could get open because i i had a certain burst of speed so he said well
21:14why don't
21:14you go tell roger that you can get open on me whatever it was he said blunt was like laughing
21:18and howard wasn't sure enough i went back and i told roger that i could get open
21:24the next place the ball back does throw the ball to percy howard he catches it for a touchdown
21:33and there was no more shock person in the orange bowl than mel blunt i came off pretty much slow
21:40and then i burst into some to some speed and when i did i got on him and while he
21:45was spinning i was
21:46going by him and when the ball hit me in the end zone i called the pass and mel came
21:51up his eyes
21:52was as big as a clock in the closing seconds of the game our number six wonder nearly caught a
21:59second touchdown which would have won the game when starback launched a hail mary if i had jumped maybe
22:07just a split second later i would have gotten that pass if i had pulled that one and roger every
22:15time i
22:15see roger he talked about it and they called me bird at the time said bird if you had gotten
22:21that one you
22:21would have gone down at infamy you know something to that effect and i always say yeah but you know
22:27that time slightly maybe just wasn't meant to be at that time
22:33still to come on top 10 one shot wonders these are men he was still the number five one shot
22:41wonder of
22:41all time tommy maddox i guess if you're talking about one hit wonders tommy maddox had one phenomenal
22:48year in pittsburgh and a lot of years that i'm sure he'd rather forget until 2002 tommy maddox would
22:56have made our list of all-time nfl draft busts our number five one shot wonder was a star at
23:06ucla
23:07and drafted in the first round in 1991 37 38 i think what happened and what ultimately proved
23:14to be his downfall at least in his first incarnation was the fact that he came out of school too
23:19early
23:21tommy maddox was just too darn young he came into the game inexperienced sophomore out of college
23:26games too big too fast these are men he was still a boy he looked like a kid that might
23:33be selling
23:34candy bars door to door he was so small maddox was brought in to be the heir apparent to john
23:40elway
23:41but it became apparent that he couldn't cut it at the pro level
23:47from the
23:51mid 90s on he bounced around the league as a backup wherever dan reeves was coaching at the time
23:57dan reeves drafted him in denver dan reeves brought him to new york i believe dan reeves even brought him
24:03to atlanta everywhere that dan went tommy went and when dan's coaching career ended then it was only
24:10natural to assume that tommy's quarterback career had ended as well and so he went into the insurance
24:16business we went down and did a piece on him for nfl films the whole thing was done as his
24:23career was
24:23over and he was looking back and you kind of see in his answers and you kind of see in
24:28his eyes when he
24:28talked about it this real kind of sense of loss i've had to swallow a lot of pride in coming
24:34back
24:34it was um to a point where you know people would ask you well what are you doing now and
24:39what are
24:39you you know and you're like well you know are you still selling nature is that what you're doing
24:43yeah still doing that so how did that pro thing work is that weird yeah it's a it's a business
24:48yeah
24:49you stop playing football and enter the business world just like everybody else like a year later i pick
24:55up the paper and read this story it says tommy maddox back in the arena football room don't
25:00forget the new jersey gladiators or the red dogs whatever they were up there
25:07and the next thing you know tommy maddox is in the xfl
25:11steward in the pocket looks fires down the field could be picked up he has just had a horrible day
25:16today throwing the football in pittsburgh the steelers had given up on the cordell steward project
25:22and decided to let the xfl mvp try and fill the void in 2002 tommy maddox gets his chance and
25:31showed
25:31all the talent that he had when he came out of ucla as a first-round draft pick tommy maddox
25:38throws it
25:38for the end so touchdown pittsburgh all right touchdown tommy maddox threw for 3 000 yards and 20 touchdowns
25:47in that year pittsburgh pittsburgh should have taken the blackboard because they weren't the
25:52steelers that year it became an aerial circus and tommy maddox fit in maddox is back he steps
25:58up and here's the rainbow our number five one-shot wonder was named the nfl's comeback player of the
26:04year and led pittsburgh to the playoffs where they won a shootout against the rival grounds
26:14the year after maddox regressed and the steelers won just six games
26:21in 04 pittsburgh drafted ben roethlisberger to replace him and maddox watched from the sidelines
26:28when the steelers won super bowl 40. he now has a super bowl ring but his memories of 2002
26:35and two are probably more precious even though in the grand scheme of things it just amounts to one
26:40year you know outside of that year he lost more than twice as many games as he won it was
26:47one year
26:47that tommy maddox really needed i'm sure it would have haunted him his whole life to say hey if only
26:52i had another opportunity i wonder if i could have played well now he knows
27:00the number four one-shot wonder of all time clint longley
27:08thanksgiving day 1974 big game as usual between the redskins and the cowboys
27:13and roger stallback gets knocked out of the game early redskins are comfortably ahead
27:18the cowboys backup quarterback at the time was a rookie named clint longley who really hadn't played at
27:23all the game and dallas's destiny was in the hands of clint longley apparently no one told this 22 year
27:32old that he was supposed to be nervous he just started throwing deep passes and one after another
27:40after another our number four one-shot wonder led the cowboys back into the game throwing for 203 yards
27:47and two touchdowns in the final quarter and a half reporters next to me scrambling through their
27:53press books trying to say who the heck is this guy it just happened it was just there and it
27:59was like
28:00it was it was just tumbling down the hill and they couldn't stop it get out of the way
28:14and after the game one of the cowboy linemen lay nigh said in referring to how unprepared clint longley
28:22was he said this victory is a triumph for the uncluttered mind
28:29and forever he'll be remembered as the cowboy on thanksgiving day that won that game
28:35and also punched out roger stallback
28:38ah yes longley made news once more in training camp in 1976. the story as it goes in dallas is
28:47that
28:47that game went to clint longley's head and gave him an inflated sense of who he was
28:54and what his role within the cowboys organization should be he said something about me one day and
29:00i told him don't don't ever say anything about me to any of my teammates say it to me in
29:03my face
29:04a few days later he did something to me he hit me from behind and just completely uh
29:08you know that's exactly what happened i mean his story that i was facing him and saying something to
29:13him was a lie uh looking back on you don't have an explanation for something like that it was
29:18uh two men getting on each other's nerves and uh it seems very unlikely one of the most unlikely
29:23things that it could have happened of course he left immediately ran and i've never seen him since
29:30that day to prevent staubach from probably physically killing clint longley the cowboys cut him immediately
29:38put him in a car and sent him to the airport and i'm not sure clint longley has been heard
29:44of since
29:44the last thing that that we heard he was selling carpet remnants out of the back of a van in
29:50marfa texas
29:52coming up the 12th round pick turns into a super bowl mvp super bowl has seen a lot of big
30:01interceptions often by unknowns like journeyman jack squire who had just two picks in his five-year career
30:11but one of them was in super bowl 18. in super bowl 37 no name safety dexter jackson's two
30:19interceptions won him the mvp and a big contract in free agency but jackson merely seemed like the
30:29second coming of our number three one shot wonder the number three one shot wonder of all time larry
30:37brown here's o'donnell big blitz and he fires a pass and it pulled and intercepted at the 40.
30:44larry brown with a big interception way back in the early 90s when the nfl draft had 12 rounds
30:51the cowboys took a flyer in the 12th on a quarterback named larry brown
30:57anybody that tells you that in the 12th round scouting prevail uh is misleading you
31:05they had to take somebody in the 12th round right and it was like you know what let's just take
31:10somebody who's close so we don't have to pay for him to come in this kid at tcu larry brown
31:14the
31:14cornerback let's bring him in at training camp he got so discouraged didn't feel like he was getting
31:20a chance because it was a 12th round pick he walks out of camp brown eventually came back
31:25but his life didn't get any easier mike zimmer our defensive back coach yelled at larry brown
31:32more than any player i had ever seen huh our number three one shot wonder persevered
31:38and in super bowl 30 had his one big day in the sun
31:45here's o'donnell big blitz and he fires a pass and it pulled in and intercepted at the 40.
31:50larry brown with a big interception
31:56his two key interceptions help determine the outcome in the frat
32:15brown was named super bowl mvp and that offseason got a huge payday from the raiders and free agency
32:22but he never lived up to the hype if you take away super bowl 30 larry brown was a pedestrian
32:29type
32:30cornerback at best but so were a lot of players who made big plays in the super bowl and once
32:36you make
32:36those big plays on the big stage with the big headlines all of a sudden your value goes through the
32:44roof
32:45i think larry brown was a product of a great system and a great team and on one shiny moment
32:51he was a
32:51benefactor
32:54larry brown's best friend for life has to be deon sanders because you weren't throwing at deon
33:02let's see on this one side of the field we got deons yep we got
33:07i mean larry brown had nearly larry brown had 19 interceptions in his career regular season in
33:16playoffs nine of them were that season talk about a deon effect
33:29sanders is probably the best single cover corner that's ever played in the national football league
33:34on the other corner we got larry brown as a 12th round draft pick hmm wonder where we're going to
33:40throw the ball so what does that mean dick knight train lane emmett thomas and willie brown who had
33:47more interceptions than deon sanders all were undrafted
33:54oh they threw the ball larry brown all season larry brown was getting thrown at because he wasn't good
33:59not because he wasn't he was a 12th round pick he's our number three one-shot wonder because neil
34:07o'donnell threw it right to him twice i know everybody was thrilled for him when he when he
34:13got the mvp but uh you know that that's that's a miscommunication between the quarterback and the
34:19receiver and the shame of it is o'donnell threw it right to him there was no receiver out there you
34:24larry just happens to be in the right place at the right time still to come he's got to be
34:30over
34:31200 yards an instant star implodes you're the greatest thing in the world the running back
34:37position has produced the most one-shot wonders you have to foster through there very fast back in 92
34:42barry foster set a single season rushing record for the steelers but sputtered out due to injuries
34:50most would claim olandis gary's success in 99 was more thanks to the broncos blocking scheme than
34:57individual talent gary in the free and on the move and there is a similar theory that tries to explain
35:02why timmy smith became the greatest running back in the world for one day and one day only
35:12the number two one-shot wonder of all time timmy smith
35:18came out of texas tech in 1987 and he spent most of the season backing up george rogers didn't
35:24didn't play much at all he was drafted as a running back he played on special teams but that was
35:31it
35:31that's all the guy was gonna do you know he's just one of those guys he's part of the cannon
35:35fodder
35:39timmy smith was the ultimate underdog the no-name backup who got his chance at stardom in the
35:45playoffs when the starter got hurt had a good nfc championship game and then all of a sudden in
35:52the super bowl he's starting but here's the thing joe gibbs was worried how our number two one-shot
35:59wonder would handle the pressure of making his first start in the super bowl so throughout the week the
36:05redskins pretended he would only see spot duty because they were afraid he'd get sick and wouldn't
36:11be able to play he'd be out there throwing up instead of playing so they didn't tell him so he
36:16didn't have time to get nervous the only player who was told was quarterback doug williams who tried
36:22to get smith mentally ready how i remember telling him i said if you get in this game and you
36:28screw up
36:29you foam i said i'm kicking your ass i said because this is my first time in the super bowl
36:33and he just
36:34laughed he said i hear your man he'll start laughing i said i'm not with you again and then he
36:41realized
36:41that i was serious and he said if i get a chance to play you i'll show you smith showed
36:48the whole world
36:49he could play he'll hand off to smith that he's back good home midfield horse race to the 40
36:54far side 35 30 25 20 15 10 5 touchdown washington redskins
37:01he just kept going and going and going and it got to the point where it was almost funny because
37:06it
37:11this is history in the making our number two one-shot wonder finished with two touchdowns
37:16and 204 rushing yards he's gotta go over 200 yards will be the single game rushing leader in super
37:24bowl history that's gotta do it and doug williams won the nvp award but timmy smith was a national
37:31sensation a couple days later he's spinning a football on david letterman's show
37:38well congratulations timmy on setting a new super bowl record that's got a great
37:42thank you very much it was shortly after that that his agent demanded to be the highest paid
37:48running back in the league and i said wait a minute this guy's played in two games and it was
37:53all
37:54downhill from there some guys can handle fame and celebrity that comes at them quickly and some guys
38:00can't and he just seemed to fall in that second category it was just too much for him you're the
38:05greatest thing in the world everybody wants to party with you everybody wants to give you all the
38:10goodies including the cocaine and the last we saw of timmy smith was he was cocaine dependent
38:16he was dismal as the full-time starter in 1988 and was cut a year and a day after his
38:23record-breaking
38:24performance while trying to make a comeback in 91 smith denied any drug use
38:32rumors that i was supposed to be on drugs but i never been on drugs and you know i just
38:38want to
38:39clear that up there's also been other explanations for why smith was a one-shot wonder tim smith is
38:46a simple one for me it's called the hawks that's the offensive line that blocked for the washington
38:50redskins but they were there the next year and he sucked so why was he so good that one game
38:58i don't
39:00there is no explanation for that he just had it for one day
39:07he had an incredible uh game but if you look at the footage probably you and i could have ran
39:12through
39:22those holes those holes those holes were huge they weren't big they were huge you could have
39:28trucked through them we ran through a lot of legal problems yeah he was involved with a drug sale when
39:35it went bad he might be in prison right now in fact smith is behind both
39:51he was going going god coming up on top 10 he was a truly outstanding brilliant athlete the man who
40:01could have been the greatest quarterback bill walsh ever coached
40:07the number one one shot wonder of all time
40:14great cook could very well have been remembered or noted as the greatest quarterback of all time
40:21bill walsh is famous for molding legendary quarterbacks like joe montana and steve young
40:29when walsh was offensive coordinator of the bengals in 1969 he mentored a passer with a potential to be
40:35better better than all of them greg cook who's a truly an athlete had a very quick delivery
40:44he could move he could avoid very similar to terry bradshaw
40:57he had a rifle arm i mean he could deliver that ball on a dime
41:04perfect anticipation laces up over the outside foot and you're done the sideline score just ungodly
41:12for the former team that man is greg cook his presence is magical he seems to inspire something
41:19in every player
41:22our number one one shot wonder also inspired something in fans he would have been the next
41:29marlboro man you know he's a great looking guy he would have been a billboard not only for the
41:34cincinnati bangles but for the national football league he'd have been on the cover of every
41:38magazine in the country for years
41:42years in the nfl he was going to be set for life
41:47but cook's star plummeted to earth in kansas city
41:58the chiefs finally found a way to stop greg cook they ruined his throwing arm i tore my rotator cuff
42:05and uh we didn't know it at that time because we didn't have the medical attention that that you have
42:11today team doctors let him play and with a torn muscle in his shoulder he led the league in passing
42:19and one rookie of the year but in doing so cook did even more damage and the archaic surgery
42:27techniques of the early 70s could do little when they finally operated he had to cut through muscles
42:34they just basically laid his shoulder open if there was the rehab programs and the types of
42:39micro surgeries that exist today greg cook was off and running for a great career by comparison
42:45saints quarterback drew breeze had surgery on his rotator cuff following the 05 season
42:50and returned to pro bowl form in 2006
42:58cook tried for several seasons to make a comeback but was never the same player since retiring he's
43:05trying before his uh injury he could throw the ball what 80 90 yards something like that
43:14when he came back in 73 he could barely throw the ball 35 40
43:23try to downplay the tragedy that lies in his injury but those he's remained close to like trumpy
43:31know the real story regardless of what greg has told you it's affected him psychologically for a long
43:37time as well it should he got cheated and it's a scar he carries with him to this day i
43:44mean just think
43:45about it whatever your profession an accomplished heart surgeon out of medical school and you're saving
43:50lives for a year and you have a bad accident take your hands away from you you can never do
43:55it again
43:56i don't know i don't know how uh how people deal with that i don't know what he would have
44:01done if
44:01he had played 10 or 12 years i think my fingers would have been filled with super bowl rings
44:08now a painter cook himself sees little use in constantly asking what if even though his football
44:16career could have been his true masterpiece i never looked at me as being a victim and i try to
44:23if i can
44:24you know avoid that trap what could have been it's not a healthy way of thinking i had some success
44:32and
44:33i i i thank god for that greg cook tries to look on the bright side and perhaps that's all
44:41that one
44:42shot wonders can do the curtain may have fallen on their nfl careers but at least they had a chance
44:50to shine on one of the grandest stages if only for one act
44:59greg cook story is really a tragedy if you look into it
45:03you
45:04you
