00:19you are the secret weapon i'm telling you in the early days of pro football most players learned
00:26multiple positions and played both ways everybody had to be a defensive player back then when i
00:32started if you couldn't play defense they didn't have any place for it but the game
00:37in the 60s that kind of went away became specialized and now versatile players are rare so what makes
00:47a versatile player on
01:02i think versatility has to be judged by can a guy do everything to help you win
01:12i think guys who did it over a length of a career those are the guys that show like this
01:17should be
01:23the number 10 most personal player of all time tom matty
01:29and in between was versatile tom matty a seven-year veteran whose spirited play
01:35has made him a favorite of all cult fans if not for broadway joe super bowl three may have had

01:43different hero tom matty in super bowl three could have been the mvp had they won i mean he had

01:49tremendous game he had over 100 yards rushing and receiving he was really a very effective weapon
01:54but matty makes our list because of his quarterback camp

03:38need to cheat on the football field i said hey listen i need all the help i can get
03:42the colts lost in overtime but our number 10 player
03:46the colts lost in overtime because the referees falsely called a field goal good that was clearly missed
03:57they got they lost because they got screwed
04:01he was as tough as he was versatile
04:07watching matty just take that snap and turn it up in there with no
04:11no fear whatsoever it was awe-inspiring
04:18after losing to the packers matty and the colts let loose against the cowboys in the runner-up
04:24bowl and that ball game matty was outstanding the colts start the afternoon with a new assurance
04:30matty has made a phenomenal adjustment they didn't know we're gonna let matty throw the football today
04:35it was a day that uh i think everything came together we threw the ball quite a bit and he
04:41did throw some
04:41good balls with a precision characteristic of a veteran passer matty pinpoint raymond barry
04:54matty had it all he could play that option quarterback and and really be difficult to deal with
05:03a symbol of matty's versatility will live forever as his wristband now resides in the hall of fame
05:10you know to be in the hall of fame for any reason and this means a lot to me is
05:15is really important
05:18coming up the return man who can do it are not known as the most versatile athletes
05:32but some kickers showed they were more than a one-trade pony
05:36blue the toe groza excelled that offensive tackle in addition to being the first great kicker
05:42both danny white and tom tupa doubled as punter and quarterback you talk about cinderella here's a
05:50new fairy tale touchdown tom tupa players at other positions have also been known to dabble in the
05:57kicking game randall cunningham attempted 20 punts in his career including a 91 yarder former patriot
06:13kicker slash receiver gino capoletti finished his career as the patriot scoring leader but he doesn't
06:19quite measure up to the one-time nfl points champ the number nine most versatile player of all time
06:31george blanda now blanda shows the all-round ability that won him the league's back of the
06:38week honors seven days earlier with his sneak for the score george blanda was one of the best kickers
06:44and most clutch quarterbacks of all time he would be higher on this list if he stuck
06:49at a third position as a rookie when he went with the bears they had two other quarterbacks
06:54they had bobby lane johnny lujak and blanda was the third quarterback so he realized he probably
06:59wasn't going to play so they used him at linebacker when he was first breaking into the league he was
07:03a big strong husky guy out of the university of kentucky and he was that kind of an athlete
07:10after 10 years with the bears blanda was relegated to only kicking duties and quit the team
07:16luckily the afl's houston oilers came calling george blanda didn't want to be known as a kicker
07:24george blanda wanted to be known as a quarterback who kicked when george blanda came to the oilers
07:31he's coming out of the conservative national football league into this new upstart america
07:40through like 36 touchdowns 30 something touchdowns big numbers especially for a 14 game season
07:47american football league that not only is allowing but encouraging wide open offenses
07:53so this is this is a quarterback's dream blanda set a then afl nfl record with 36 touchdown passes
08:01in a season but was deemed too old at age 39 and released
08:10the oakland raiders signed the 40-year-old kicker slash quarterback the following season
08:14three years later blanda would take the team on a five-game miracle run
08:22the game came down those last few minutes and the raiders would be losing you just knew that
08:26here comes george blanda we're starting again this is an extra quarter and here's your ball game
08:31it's not it's down it's kicked it is good it's good the minute we were in trouble john just went

08:41the bullpen waved his hand and george came in and started throwing those miraculous passes and
08:47kicking those miraculous few goals
08:53blanda's most impressive feat came against the cleveland browns once again the ageless wonder
08:58worked his versatile magic off the bench he said i'll tell you what he said if you let me
09:06throw three slants to warren wells i'll guarantee you a touchdown
09:11blanda back to pass blanda looks blanda throws complete touchdown he got he got a touchdown and
09:17that's because well one blanda was good and two warren wells was great

09:47he is i think the greatest clutch player that the game has ever known
09:51george blanda has just been elected king of the world at the age of 43 george blanda was not over
09:58the hill he was keen on it he was 43 and he could have been 65 i mean he's kicking

10:19what's most amazing about our number nine player streak was that he was doing it at age 43
10:26old people would say how the hell is he doing and wives would say to their husbands look this guy's

10:38and one of its all-time competitors he was an inspirational player he was a clutch player
10:45all these things add to his versatility
10:52the number eight most versatile player of all time brian mitchell i wonder if anybody in the in the
10:58history of the league has played as many different positions as you as you have cardio still came in
11:02and they called him slash i said well i've been doing that since 90s so he can have the name

12:50that's what i plan on doing returning everything
12:52you hear guys say you have that field vision
12:55where you can kind of see
12:57the play before it develops
12:58and you can kind of hit the hole
13:00that's what brian brought to the game
13:01and he was strong
13:02he was an in your face guy
13:04he was fearless about returning kicks
13:07and he'd stick his nose in somebody else's face
13:10and start a fight
13:11he was ready to go at any moment

16:02mike brable was a part-time player in pittsburgh
16:05they saw in him
16:06an element of versatility which they thought
16:08would be of great benefit to them
16:11mike brable is a guy who is interchangeable
16:14you know you can play him at defensive end
16:16you can play him at outside linebacker
16:18you can play him at rush linebacker
16:20so he fits into bill belichick's defense perfectly
16:23he's kind of a good poster boy
16:25for what the new york patriots are all about
16:27plays a run pretty good
16:28plays a pass pretty good
16:29you know tough guy that plays on special teams
16:32that prepares hard
16:32there's a lot of things i like about mike brable
16:37mike brable is a linebacker
16:39but when people remember his contributions to the patriots
16:43they're not going to remember the tackles that he made
16:45they're going to remember the touchdowns that he caught
16:48in 2004 brable caught his first nfl touchdown
16:52and a two-way player was born
16:55i think this is something that belichick saw
16:58during practice
16:59he's
16:59well it was just a gadget play
17:02sees that the guy can catch the ball
17:04so the guys get great hands

18:27what they got was a first-rate linebacker and a guy who can play inside and can be part of
18:32any kind of weird defensive package that you want and then oh by the way he can line up as
18:37an eligible receiver catch eight passes off for touchdowns and score in two different super bowls it's one of the
18:43more interesting careers of our time
18:47the number six most versatile player of all time
18:50ornell stewart
18:53when i first got to camp coach didn't know what to do with me
18:56and then one day
18:57it just hit me
19:01coach you all right
19:04in 1995 the steelers had a problem
19:06they had one of the most versatile rookies of all time positioned to play
19:10their solution
19:12try him everywhere
19:16stewart
19:17looking for the block
19:18there goes slash
19:19that cord down
19:20stewart
19:20is strictly a crazy life
19:22he is blockbuster stuff
19:24he's the wave of the national football league
19:30but to some
19:31stewart is best known for his arm
19:34to me as a michigan wolverine
19:36he's a guy who can heave the ball 70 yards down the field
19:39back goes
19:40yeah and he didn't always heave it to the right team

20:15not too many quarterbacks or receivers have done all the things that i've done so you say

20:23so instead of calling me all that just break it down and just give me one word

20:29because here you have a great athlete
20:32why let that guy sit on the bench when he's a better athlete than half the receivers you got
20:36and half your running backs
20:37what a play by cordial stewart
20:39and only a great athlete could make it happen
