00:00it's broken yesterday was one thing with um the sabers didn't do anything that you that we liked
00:07that you liked they didn't do anything of import right right i i gotta i gotta get in on the
00:12red
00:13card oh sure i mean that's i just top of mind it's one thing you're gonna love the setup it's
00:21one
00:21thing if it's called in the course of play it's another when yes play is stopped and we sit
00:33around for five minutes about that seemed yeah and then they come out with the red card and it's
00:39replay time it's it's well it's replay time already but it you're looking at from all the different
00:46angles just screen grabs of the contact between the two players you know what that was i think an
00:56accident i mean right i mean they're in my house we were all bent about out the number of times
01:02jerseys were being held like why wouldn't that automatically be a card it seemed like when you
01:07see somebody grab a jersey and half a dozen instances of that in the first half of the
01:12match that we're not i said match like i'm cool uh the game that we're not called that that seems
01:18automatic yeah but that's something that's not something that would naturally happen in a soccer
01:22game but you go out of your way to grab and hold the jersey and not something you would even
01:27ever need
01:27replay to confirm for you like you're watching them pretty much that that is not the person usually
01:33that gets grabbed has the ball and they're running past another dude and it's you know it's like
01:38somebody does that in a football game of course that's a flag i mean they miss it
01:41occasionally i suppose like in a you know football american football game uh so yeah those seemed like
01:47easy calls to make and none of them got made and then that happens and it's a whole the whole
01:54thing
01:55it's really just talking into the abyss replay but that's a that's a classic example of how screwed up
02:06it is and how everyone's internationally this is the world cup every sport now has replay it seems any
02:15any niche sport has i mean amateur sports have often usually some mechanism where plays can be challenged
02:25and rules can be changed or decisions can be changed and as futile as it always feels to rail against
02:36the
02:37get it right majority i think it's a majority it's certainly the politically how sports are always going
02:46more and more money and effort spent in being able to change calls it's just so wrong
02:57that was a regular play that happens all the time in a soccer game and in this case it means
03:04that our best
03:05guy or goal scoring wise our best guy has to miss very important the next game because we stopped
03:13everything on a close one and found a picture of him stepping on the bosnians foot and that was it
03:23i think baligan i think that picture is brandon cooks with the ball on the ground in denver
03:30right i think you have to sign up for both or neither you can't have right you cannot be listen
03:38i mean i've been doing this a long time you have no right to that should not have been a
03:43red card
03:43and cooks caught it you have no right to both we found a picture of baligan stepping on the foot
03:54watch it at full speed uh whatever yeah maybe it's a foul but it's not you're kicked out of the
04:00game and the next one right you have you can you can say that you can support the decision
04:09if you do watch the if you don't watch the continuation of the play in denver
04:17where he has the ball and yes look there's a picture he's on the ground everyone touched him
04:24hey twitter hi i'm out here i found a picture that 10 000 other people have already shared
04:29of brandon cooks on the ground with the ball therefore that's a catch no it's not it wasn't
04:35then all right it won't be next time they i mean sometimes it will be because they don't always get
04:40it right or agree or can it's not easy that's part of the problem it's really hard as it has
04:48been
04:48forever to parse these sort of these plays and feel listen to listen to this when are you old enough
04:59if you're a young younger adult replay has been ubiquitous it's part of your entire life watching
05:05sports you've never experienced big time sports without it no and it's just sort of part of it
05:12it's ingrained it's a necessary evil or maybe you don't think it's an evil at all
05:18you can't even imagine perhaps sports without that sort of backup that safety net where if a call is
05:26missed you have instant replay of course you know logically though in football say take football or
05:35soccer soccer seems at least as good of an example there are i mean dozens of infractions in games that
05:44are not called and there's no move there's no recourse recourse for it all the penalties that
05:52don't get called just don't get called and football has dabbled and it's going to get worse
05:58forever it'll always be getting worse yeah football has dabbled in you mean you want to see some sweat
06:04football has dabbled in let's try to make it work so we can review penalties and that didn't get very
06:12far but they still want it i think everybody you know remember i'll never forget tim murray
06:17sabers now talking about the offside challenge and he was like all he condescended he's like
06:23you guys have never lost a game because of a bad call right like that's not the right point no
06:28whether you work for a team or root for a team it's the same like it's not about that it's
06:34about
06:34the balance between what's like sort of reasonable and what effect it has on the fan experience you
06:44wouldn't exist if not for the fans but the soccer one last night is a different point that's an
06:50unnecessary stoppage and decision that really was not fair and needed really at all this wasn't any
07:00sort of violent act that guy balligan does seem to be maybe a tough one for an official because he
07:05was
07:05always complaining like he that was maybe the eighth time in that game where he was and that
07:10that's harry kane i think there there are certain guys and we don't always know who they are and they
07:16can maybe get into our officials you know they can become a problem for an official yeah but i don't
07:21know like even still i don't i clear clear and obvious what happened to clear and obvious meaningless
07:27delays we all just sit around and wait to belgium's penalty to win see it i did not so it's
07:342-2 and
07:35they're almost to penalty kicks senegal and here's this play it's really close the announcers go on for
07:43minutes about how close it was and no no suggestion of a foul and then oh hang on we're going
07:53to look at
07:54this the fox rules analyst is it all is it ever different with the rules analyst the rules analyst
08:00walks in and they ask him so dr joe dr joe you got to have an md for this you
08:06got to be you got to be
08:07doctor you got to be qualified dr joe what is this like that's not a foul penalty game game over
08:15you're advancing you're going home yeah i mean you you are at least as militant about this as i am
08:23it's never going to change it's only ever going to get worse all the bs you can take
08:31every one of these replays and more and yeah like it's just it's like a lot of things last point
08:40it's
08:40like a lot of things in sports where my stuff with fourth downs and um two-point conversions like
08:48all that stuff where announcers because they're ex-players all tend to hate it because that's not
08:53how they were raised and if it doesn't work troy aikman so all of them like almost all of them
09:01not all of them if it doesn't work you'll never hear the end of it if it does you'll never
09:07hear it
09:07again and i think replay is is a form of this where if it's you know not used and there's
09:18some
09:18sort of an egregious mistake or something it's like oh wow how did they how did they not get out
09:23var they should have had some mechanism in place to make sure that they got that right right but this
09:29one last night all the complaining is not about replay because we can't live without that it's about
09:36the decision itself to review it at all the the outcome of the red card through replay it's like
09:45well how could that be a red card and oh you can't even now now then what would you get
09:49after the game
09:49oh we can't even review the review there's no appeal we can't now we not now we are are pissed
09:57because we can't review the review there's no yeah there's no process formally for the the only thing
10:02that i i from what i've i've gathered over the last i don't know 12 hours or so uh is
10:09that fifa could
10:10rescind it but they have to just do that independent like there's no formal like the usa doesn't get to
10:17go in front of a panel and frame by frame or whatever there's no it just fee would have to
10:22decide
10:23that was unjust and to do that now would probably look ridiculous maybe as ridiculous as calling the
10:29foul in the first place uh even though it might be the more just outcome it's going to look biased
10:34and and messed up so i wouldn't expect that they're going to do anything about it i guess they could
10:39but there is no yeah there's no like oh gary bettman says i got five games i'm appealing and maybe
10:45i can get
10:46it knocked down to three like there's no process that exists the only the only the only thing that you
10:52haven't said that i thought while because i thought all of the things i mean for many many
10:58many many many many years i i mean i've said for years i put on my great gravestone like you
11:04know
11:04instant replay is a scourge or something um
11:09it's not that we're any longer in a place i don't think we are where you know you've made the
11:15mention
11:15of uh this person in rochester in the newsroom at the dnc saying for the 30th year in a row
11:20soccer's the
11:21fastest growing sport in america like i don't know that we're still in the streets fighting the
11:25war about soccer yeah i mean the the tournament's been a spectacle the ratings have been great
11:30it's it's been off the charts successful i think despite all the hand-wringing about
11:35the tickets and transportation ahead of time i think it's been great like fans from other countries
11:42are raving about the experience they're having and it just seems like overall just a huge positive
11:48and it's like soccer i don't think needs our help anymore like being propped up but it made me
11:53could this be good for soccer because we love all our sports like this where there's these stupid
11:59rulings and then we argue about them and that somehow keeps us tethered to the sport because we're
12:05talking about you know i'm mad well i'm mad i have an emotion i'm gonna do something about it what
12:12does that probably watch the next game it doesn't usually mean i'm walking away from it let's see
12:18what they do now or so i don't even know but like very i don't know somewhat ironic that the
12:24american
12:25team in this tournament hosting this tournament is the on the wrong end of a call that you know we
12:32live
12:33with this 10 times a weekend in the nfl or five whatever like every monday or tuesday there's did you
12:40see
12:41this thing that happened in the new england jacksonville game like there's always stuff
12:45and here i'm the biggest well it's not the biggest stage possible because there's still more rounds to
12:51go but huge huge stage and you've got like a replay complaint that does does us does you know the
13:00united
13:01states wrong and i just something about it just seems sort of funny to me well really
13:11it very well could affect the next game for sure but yeah my big my macro problem with it is
13:20now you
13:21have baseball balls and strikes and you're right the other day or yesterday when you said at least
13:26it moves pretty fast and you know tennis is the the gold standard i guess for this because it's pretty
13:33quick yeah and they don't even challenge anything anymore in tennis like it's all they don't even have
13:37linesmen anymore what's funny is just on the screen and they tell you yeah what's funny is they well
13:43they don't even really have that anymore it's just like all done in the back okay you hit a ball
13:47and
13:47it's called out you feel like it's out okay right so and there's no line there are no lines people
13:53they've all been removed it's all just done in an office and what's funny is that the lines
14:01call the calls that you hear in the arena or on the broadcast are different voices based on which
14:08line it is they're still kind of representing there are different people somewhere in the world
14:13making these calls but there's actually no one except for a computer and if it's the service line
14:19it's like a guy and if it's the left side line it's a woman it's like it's funny that it's
14:23not all just
14:24you know a beep or something they still you they're still disguising it on the premise that
14:29there are actually people doing it the point i was going to make though balls and strikes
14:34var and soccer how many games do these teams play in their leagues in their seasons where it really
14:45is necessary to have a home plate umpire challenged on a ball that might have missed the strike zone by
14:52three quarters of an inch i mean just how ridiculous is that but it's just the wind wind always blows
15:00the
15:00other way i never hear anybody say it you get 162 games and we have more playoff teams than ever
15:07did you need that second inning reversal at the plate in a game against the brewers really is that so
15:15important so this thing i think is more of an outrage because the guy misses a game it's one thing
15:21to play a man short for 30 minutes right yeah exactly but now here's their top goal scorer and
15:27he misses the quarterfinals like the biggest game in the history of the national i have known that
15:31that rule about the red cup but for some reason watching it it it took me until maybe they made
15:38it
15:39to nothing for me to realize like oh that doesn't just mean they had to play a man down because
15:44you
15:45know okay well they escaped you know they they got another goal they're gonna win this match okay great
15:50oh wait a second they never said it right right they never said it i had to realize it on
15:55my own
15:56it waited until rebecca low yeah when the game was over for it to be said as far as i
16:03know my wife
16:04didn't hear it we were talking about it throughout the second half like he can't play the next one
16:08right and that would have been the first thing out of my mouth yeah is not only do they have
16:13to
16:13survive this game but he can't play the next one they never said it maybe they were superstitious i mean
16:18do your job yeah but and i love those guys but i never heard them say once like they almost
16:24didn't
16:24know that he would miss the next game the game ends u.s wins it goes to rebecca low and
16:30she's like
16:31now they're gonna have to play without him like a lot of people i'm sure went oh yeah right right
16:36right i didn't know that right just that that's makes it that's more where the call becomes the
16:44the the controversy but i want to make it about the whole thing arsenal won the premier league do
16:51they not but for var like how how many goals would have had to be re resurrected changed in the
17:01course
17:01of a 38 game season baseball plays 162 games and we got to sit around waiting for umpires i know
17:08it's
17:09fast i just resent the premise of it if if you if an umpire misses a call isn't that okay
17:18can that be
17:20okay anymore used to be yeah if it's strike two in the fifth inning of a game in texas can
17:26that just be
17:27can we just move on and not stop everything and scream at the wind for how bad it was it
17:36was it was
17:37outside by a whole inch i just it's never gonna go the other way that that thing last night never
17:46should have happened call the red card on the fly
17:53stepped on his foot that's what i saw yeah at least do that what once you don't do that that
18:01should be it
18:05yeah you and i alternate with this rant yeah i just i decided to take a turn today i appreciate
18:10you the replay the replay plague yeah is just never going to stop and all it does is suck the
18:19life out
18:19of sports the belgium one it's probably not as bad because i mean they still have to win penalties and
18:26who knows but literally you got a guy in the booth whose job it is to tell you if it's
18:32a foul
18:33and he says it isn't and you've got harry kane diving in the afternoon and announcers are arguing
18:39about whether that was a fun really that was in the booth and that was in the studio too they
18:42couldn't
18:43decide then let's just keep playing which in the england case is what they did right they did not
18:49stop the game forever and stare at it 10 times looking for clear and obvious just real quick because i
18:54mean
18:54i'm not going to pretend to be expert on what qualifies as a foul that rises to the level of
19:01red versus yellow and all that but just generally speaking it seems pretty harsh to have a play
19:09that looked what was was it reckless can accidental be reckless i think so but doesn't shouldn't intent
19:18matter like if you grievously foul someone purposefully that seems like that rises to the
19:25level of red card something that is like you you're just stepping and it so happens your opponent
19:32the whole thing just did not seem to me that that could have been spain versus what are we watching
19:38today austria austria and i feel the same like oh that didn't really seem like no violent enough
19:46he's playing for the ball intentional enough to rise to the level of not only do you got to get
19:52kicked out of this game you're gonna miss the next one right like it seems egregious what what is
19:57that what is the hockey's version of that where you like miss the next series what would you have to
20:03do like take off your skate and cut somebody's neck with it match penalty i just rises to that
20:08level i think for the game suspension but this is like the whole next round right he's gonna miss
20:13the quarter five or the round of 16 i know it's a little bit of a twisted argument because best
20:18of seven but you know it's pretty harsh and it's all just not necessary some of us grew up with
20:26sports
20:26not having this constant these constant stoppages so we can look at every play from every angle
20:33feeling like we're actually getting somewhere what a joke mike show up in the bulldog paul hamilton
20:39sel capaccio and in between travis yost oh yeah you think hockey's over ah we'll show you not not yet
20:47you think hockey's over ah we'll show you not yet
20:47you think hockey's over ah we'll show you not yet
20:47you think hockey's over ah we'll show you not yet
20:47you think hockey's over ah we'll show you not yet
20:47you think hockey's over ah we'll show you not yet
