Should Washington move on from Anthony Davis or try to win with him on the team?
Transcript
00:00Does anyone know where all of the hosts here on 106.7 The Fan currently stand
00:07on whether or not the Wiz should trade Anthony Davis?
00:12I don't think so.
00:14Is there some waffling?
00:15Like, let's start with the junkies.
00:17Have the junkies gotten on record as to keep them, flip them, keep them, flip them?
00:24Listen, I've always said this, and this is where I don't know what the other guys are saying,
00:28but my whole thing is, knowing that he's a guy that's injured a lot,
00:33if they offer you a haul, you take it.
00:37Okay.
00:39But if you don't.
00:40And it depends on what a haul is.
00:42Yeah, I mean, you know, when he's healthy and playing,
00:48you know what you could have probably got for him as a young Anthony Davis.
00:51Now he's in his 30s.
00:52And he has some trade on those sides, some miles on those legs.
00:56Oh, yeah, the rims.
00:58The rims have been rebuilt and they're scuffed up.
01:01Yeah, but what if somebody steps in and they feel he can be that piece to something
01:06and they come in on, you make that move.
01:08But if not, and you have the uphand, which I believe the Wizards do,
01:13you're going to play here.
01:15Okay.
01:15So, Rhino, do you know, generally speaking,
01:18where the junks fall in this whole situation?
01:22I think it's a mixed bag at this point because I know they've been talking about it.
01:26Okay.
01:27All right.
01:27And, B, Mitch, you're not committed one way or the other.
01:30What about J.P.?
01:31Is he also being in the U.N. right now?
01:33J.P. and I, I think, we're on the same level where, you know,
01:36if you can make a move for him,
01:37but we thought if a move was going to happen,
01:39it was going to happen closer to the draft.
01:41Okay, Grant and Danny, have they planted their flag on this?
01:44Or are they still keeping open options?
01:46That'll be true.
01:46Okay.
01:47Well, let me just start with me, and then I'll ask you guys.
01:50To me, the simplest argument about whether or not to keep or trade Anthony Davis is this.
01:58You're already thinking about it.
01:59If you're already thinking about it, then yes, of course, you should trade him.
02:05In fact, it may be almost too late to trade him.
02:09By the time you start thinking of trading a guy, it is often too late.
02:13Look at what the Celtics did to themselves with Jalen Brown.
02:18They let this thing get away from them,
02:19and they ran his value down to the point where what they got back for him is not good
02:25in any way, shape, or form because they waited too long,
02:29and they let the league know, unmistakably, we can't hold him.
02:33We can say we don't want to trade him, but they know our situation.
02:38They understand his personality, and he is out there on social media, Jalen Brown,
02:43making it clear he ain't happy.
02:46So not only is it scaring away teams from giving the Celtics a haul,
02:51but also it pretty much quashed the chance to send him to Milwaukee
02:55because once Brown was really out there publicly unhappy,
02:59Milwaukee got spooked going,
03:01hmm, if he doesn't like it in Boston, he's not going to like it here
03:04because we have a worse team.
03:06We're sending Giannis somewhere, and it's Milwaukee.
03:09So we don't want that package.
03:11We want the Miami package.
03:13So the Celtics have screwed themselves on two fronts
03:16because they waited too long, and they played themselves basically.
03:21So when you're the Wizards, you have a guy in Anthony Davis
03:25who is at his theoretical peak of value.
03:29And when I say theoretical, here's what I mean.
03:33Theoretically, he might be healthy this time.
03:35Might be.
03:37The thing is, he hasn't played last year, and it's now summer.
03:41And so the visceral memory of him being there in street clothes,
03:46on your bench, eating up $55 million of cap space
03:50is not front and center in other teams' minds.
03:53You want to trade on the perception and the hope and the dream
03:58of an Anthony Davis that probably doesn't exist,
04:02and that is the mostly healthy version.
04:04So I say, yes, trade him.
04:07Of course you would like a, quote, haul,
04:10but take whatever is in the ballpark
04:14because here's the other thing, Beamage.
04:16He's got a player option for next year, and then he's out.
04:20Yeah.
04:21Next year is already here, in essence.
04:24It comes so quickly.
04:25You have to always be a year ahead.
04:28If you keep Anthony Davis right now as the league is frothing with deals,
04:34guys being sent all over the place, Kawhi back to Toronto,
04:38this guy Walker Kessler, who I don't really know much about his game,
04:41being sent to the exciting whites in L.A. with Luka and company,
04:45and then you've got this Jalen Brown trade.
04:48The league is frothy right now.
04:50A deal can be done.
04:52If you miss this off-ramp, then what's your plan?
04:56Play him and hope you're good, and then what?
04:58Pour more money into Anthony Davis because he'll require more money this time next year
05:06because he'll be running into his own player option in free agency.
05:09I don't want to put more money into the guy.
05:11I don't think he'll ever be healthy.
05:13So my answer is get out.
05:16Get out now because you're already thinking about it.
05:19But the thing I think, I can go along with you in other sports.
05:24Basketball is the dumbest sport in the world.
05:26They just trade all the time.
05:27Dumbest?
05:28Yeah, people trade you weird stuff for stuff.
05:31If you get a star player and they say, we want Ant with us,
05:35they go get him, whatever it costs.
05:38So he still has that ability where there are guys in this league
05:42that think if he's on their team and he gives them 45, 50 games,
05:46they can win a championship with him.
05:47They believe this.
05:49And ownership and the front office, they'll go with it.
05:52So I don't think you just take anything.
05:55You got to get some level of value back for him.
05:58What that is right now, I don't know.
06:00But if somebody comes and offers me a hamstack, I'm not taking it.
06:04They're offering me a steak.
06:05Okay?
06:06And I just believe that he's never shown them thus far that he's into this.
06:14Trey did.
06:16Anthony hasn't.
06:17So when they come out and say, oh, we're not thinking about it,
06:21that's to make other teams think.
06:22You're not thinking about it.
06:24The thing of it is this.
06:25I haven't seen the Wizards' bad shimmy and make him look bad
06:29like the Celtics were doing with Jalen Brown.
06:31The Celtics took a side.
06:32They did.
06:33So they basically told the league, of course,
06:36this team has played it as close to the vest that they really like Anthony
06:41and want to be around.
06:42So it still makes other people say, well, they ain't saying nothing bad
06:45about him yet.
06:46All right.
06:46Sounds like you're not ready to plant a flag.
06:48Oh, no.
06:49You're going to stay neutral.
06:50See, my whole thing is you should never plant a flag
06:53because when you plant the flag, you miss out.
06:56No, no.
06:57That's as a team.
06:58I'm asking you as just a fan and a media person.
07:01I think on a level as a team, I can't not ever think just like that.
07:05All right.
07:06Clary, where do you stand?
07:07I'm keeping notes right now, at least in our house right here.
07:10I'm trading him today.
07:11Trade him today.
07:12Okay.
07:13Trade him today.
07:14For what?
07:14Don't look back.
07:15For whatever you can get?
07:16Honestly, if you can get a first-round pick within the next year or two,
07:21take it.
07:22If they give a first-round pick, I think they would have done it yesterday.
07:25Oh, here's the problem there, Clary, is that is you're going to have to take
07:28some of the back.
07:28Like, when they were talking about the Golden State trade, included coming
07:32back here was Jimmy Butler, and that is a turd of a contract.
07:35We don't want any part of that.
07:37I get that.
07:38So, find a trade where you don't have to take anything onerous back,
07:41or if you take something back.
07:41You don't have to take something back because it's got to match.
07:43The NBA, it's got to match.
07:44But if you take something back, let's hope it sunsets quick,
07:47like within a year.
07:48That's all.
07:49All right.
07:50Walker, where do you stand right now, trade or no trade?
07:54If the right package coming, like if, for instance, go to state.
07:58If go to state was like, okay, you got to take Jimmy Butler,
08:01but we'll give you Yaxo, too.
08:03Ooh.
08:03I will take that because now it gives us a true big man down there.
08:07We could put Sarr at the four.
08:09Okay.
08:09So, if it's coming with a young center that could bang down there on them
08:12boards and, you know, clean up the dirty laundry, I would take him.
08:17Okay.
08:17So, you're open to it.
08:19Yeah, but if Anthony Davis stay healthy and give us a dominant presence
08:24in the paint, I'm going to keep him as well.
08:27White Brian, where do you stand right now?
08:29I'm keeping him.
08:30I really like what Ben said about having to win.
08:34The Wizards haven't learned how to win.
08:36And you look a couple years ago, the Spurs brought in Chris Paul.
08:39He kind of taught him how to win, and now they were in the NBA Finals this year.
08:42Okay.
08:43I mean, to me.
08:43Anthony Davis might want to play very good this year so he really can get to a
08:48team that he want to be at.
08:50Well, then that would be bad for us.
08:52But I'm trying to think what, like, to me, there's three outcomes of keeping
08:56Anthony Davis, three basic outcomes.
08:59The best outcome is he's healthy-ish, plays great, and the Wizards are great
09:05with him, and they sign him to, yes, an expensive deal, but not one that buckles
09:10our knees, that he wants to stay here, and that he signs a deal that is not
09:14knee-buckling.
09:15And then, and then, this is all part of the best case, he stays healthy going
09:19forward in the next two or three years to maybe get somewhere special.
09:24But see, that has to be discussed, I think, somebody mentioned, in August.
09:27I know, but here's the thing.
09:28That's coming up now.
09:29You may have to think about that.
09:31When I describe to you my best-case scenario, does that not sound like a
09:34fantasy almost?
09:35Like, yeah, sure, that'll happen.
09:37Yeah.
09:37All those things are going to happen.
09:38A, he's going to stay healthy.
09:40B, they're going to be good with him.
09:41C, he's going to want to stay.
09:42And D, you can sign him to a new deal that is not knee-buckling.
09:46Good luck on all that.
09:47That's an inside straight you're asking to hit.
09:49So if that's the best case, let me go through some of the worst cases.
09:53Worst case is you keep him, you miss this frothy window to move him in the NBA
09:58where there's a lot of things being flung around, and then he's still hurt,
10:02he doesn't really provide much impact, and then he exercises his player option
10:08and bolts for nothing.
10:10That would suck.
10:11The third nightmare is he plays kind of good to tease you.
10:15You get sucked into the moment, and you put more money into him,
10:19and then he really starts breaking down like a 67 Buick,
10:24and he's in the front yard immobile with weeds growing through his engine block.
10:29See, that's the nightmare right there.
10:32But that's the nightmare, but see, that's what the front office
10:36and the owners don't get.
10:37They don't get the after stuff happened, now we can dog it out,
10:42like the fans and media people do.
10:44They got to make a decision on what they think now.
10:46And when you sign that contract today, you can't be saying,
10:51later on I can say I shouldn't have done this deal.
10:53They got to stick to it.
10:54So whatever happens, I forgot who was on the air with us.
10:59I think that has to come up on Friday.
11:01I mean, in August, right?
11:03If they decide to move forward with this thing or not.
11:06Okay.
11:06So that decision's coming.
11:08They have to make a decision.
11:10And on top of it, he can't get top, top dollar from another team but this team.
11:15With his contract he has currently.
11:17True.
11:18So they have the upper hand on him at this point.
11:20But the dollars are so crazy.
11:22Even for not top dollars.
11:23That's just basketball.
11:24That's how they pay him.
11:25I know.
11:25But, you know, you go to a different state, you can make it up in less taxes.
11:29Yeah.
11:29Florida, Texas.
11:31Like I say, I have learned a long time ago not to look at a professional athlete's salary and care.
11:38I've learned a long time ago not to look at a professional athlete's salary.
