00:03Layer kindling in first, generally some twists of newspaper, something called fatwood, which I
00:09discovered a couple of years ago. Very excellent tinder. And then, of course, some smaller pieces
00:15of firewood. These are kind of small, really dry. Again, the bark is just, you can hear the crackles.
00:23And then in the firebox, I have an assortment here, and I thought I would just talk about
00:27firewood itself. Always choose a hardwood and make sure that the wood is dry. This is ash.
00:34You can see that it is very, very dense. It is heavy for its size. It releases a subtle fragrance
00:42as it burns. It is an excellent firewood. Here's a piece of oak. Look for red oak, white oak. It's
00:48tough and long burning. It does leave a lot of ash, though, in your fireplace. Maple burns efficiently
00:55efficiently, and it exudes a really wonderful, strong aroma. And when I say efficiently,
01:03that means that it burns almost up. It doesn't leave a lot of ashes. My favorite wood is birch.
01:10Birch burns quickly. It leaves hardly any ash at all. In fact, you can have five or six fires
01:16before you have to sweep anything out of your fireplace.
