01:05They have shaker pegs, which are also like hooks,
01:09on which you can hang brooms and laundry bags and clothespins.
01:14And they also have very nice deep shelves on which you can put your laundry soaps,
01:20your stain removal kit, your brushes, all the things, paper towels, extra toilet paper,
01:27the hand towels.
01:27This is a great laundry room now.
01:33Always keep a stain removal chart, and this is the one from marthastewart.com,
01:39right in your laundry room.
01:41Keep a little kit with all the ingredients, the alcohol, the acetone, the vinegar, the mineral oil.
01:48All of these items will help you remove any tough stains.
01:52Just follow the directions on the chart.
01:57So these fabric softener sheets, these are unscented.
02:01You can add a little bit of essential oil to a sheet like this.
02:05A little lavender oil, maybe eucalyptus if that's what you prefer,
02:09or a little bit of tangerine oil.
02:12This really smells very good.
02:14Just a drop on a sheet, put that into your dryer,
02:17and your towels will come out smelling so delicious.
02:24This little rubber footed ironing board is really a handy thing to have in a laundry room.
02:30And it's easy to make out of home soap, a little bit of fiber, and covered in muslin.
02:35And it fits right on top of this cabinet, and it expands my table space.
02:40And one other way to make a small space even better, bigger seeming, is with our laundry storage cabinet.
02:47This is also from the Home Decorators collection, and it is really excellent.
02:53So having a space like this is really an added attraction for a laundry room this size.
02:59An organized, really usable laundry room that's easy to keep clean and keep well stocked, it's a good thing.
03:07So what kind of shirts do you usually wear?
03:10I wear pretty much a lot of button downs, dress shirts, t-shirts, sweaters, obviously.
03:16Okay, so have you ever folded a t-shirt simply?
03:20I've tried.
03:21Okay, but you know how?
03:23Okay, so how would you fold that?
03:26If you were folding it right out of the laundry, yeah.
03:34Hold on, give me a second.
03:35Okay.
03:36Give me one second.
03:38You know what I usually do is this, watch.
03:40Oh, you do?
03:41And where do you put that?
03:45Okay, so now unroll it and just put it down like this, okay?
03:51Neck to your left, bottom of the shirt to your right, right side up, okay?
03:58And all the directions are on our old t-shirt that you could probably find on eBay now, okay?
04:04So now lightly pinch right between the shoulder, you know, watch, but here's the neck and here's the sleeve,
04:13so sort of a third of the way down, okay?
04:16Lightly pinch, then about two inches or three inches from the armhole and the same line,
04:23see, make an imaginary line, pinch again very lightly, okay?
04:29Okay, then now take your left hand and take it down and right down to that imaginary line
04:37all the way, grab that, pinch together.
04:40Pinch this together.
04:41Yeah.
04:42Okay.
04:42Okay, now don't let go of anything.
04:44Nope, I'm following you.
04:46Pick up like this.
04:47Wait, what do I do with my right hand?

05:04The laundry room has to be well organized, and of course you need a system for sorting clothes.
05:09Get baskets like this, one for light colors and whites, one for dark colors, one for towels and
05:15other cherry items, and of course something for delicates like underwear and stockings.
05:20Now I'm just trying to label this particular tub with a P-touched label, printed and put on a card,
05:29and then I can just punch a hole right here.
05:32And this is a shower curtain ring, so it works perfectly for this.
05:36So here we have wonderful sorting bins.
05:41Delicates we keep over here in this bag.
05:44This is a beautiful fabric bag.
05:46You can make these bags, or you can also buy laundry bags.
05:49You can keep all those delicates right in a bag like this.
05:52Having enough hooks and enough places to put things is very important in a laundry room.
05:57We have our first aid kit right here, if you've got a burn or if you've got a headache from
06:02too much washing and ironing.
06:04So that's our first aid kit.
06:06And the reason that I have deep tubs is because I love washing in a deep tub.
06:12I like to, after a dinner party, bring the napkins down to the basement, soap them in a tub.
06:18You can see, filled with cool water, maybe a little bit of soap, just leave them there overnight.
06:23All stains kind of wash out then very, very easy.
06:28And we have our soap dish with that wonderful lava soap.
06:33This is great if you have poison ivy, but it's a really good hand cleaner anyway.
06:37Rubber gloves, of course.
06:38I always have clocks because it really does keep you on schedule.
06:43Another great thing is this drying rack.
06:46And I don't know if you've ever seen a drying rack like this.
06:49It is beautifully designed and this just pulls out, you pull each side and you have plenty of space.
06:57And then it folds up to almost nothing.
07:01And these are metal wire holders.
07:05They are great for special cleansers, rags, paper toweling, the garbage bags for our covered garbage pail.
07:13This is for lint, debris, and don't forget, if your cats love your laundry room, give them some beds.
07:20If they have their own beds, maybe they won't be lying on top of your sheets and towels that you
07:25just take out of the dryer.
07:26Food and water, of course.
07:27Let me see.
07:28Oh, I almost forgot our stain charts.
07:31Now, these are great.
07:33Different kinds of cleaning agents, care labels.
07:36These are laminated right out of our clothes keeping issue.
07:39You can get this stain chart on the internet at MarthaStewart.com.
07:44Print it out, put it up, read it because it really helps.
07:48New washers and dryers.
07:49And that's pretty much what inspired us to do this laundry room here at the studio.
07:53And they are excellent.
07:55Real heavy duty, big size.
07:57They are lovely inside as well as out.
08:00Big stainless steel tubs.
08:02And what I like about this, front loaders that don't have any agitator.
08:07And that is really great for every single kind of laundry.
08:12Oftentimes, your clothes will be really stretched around the agitator.
08:16It's very hard to keep clothespins in the original package.
08:20And I found that just reaching into a jar like this, the clothespins are handy.
08:26You can see them.
08:27You know where they are.
08:28So this is a nice way to organize the clothespins.
08:31You can also, of course, use a clothespin bag.
08:34So here we have our jar full of our clothespins.
08:39This will go on the wall right behind me on our new shelves.
08:43And a nice little sewing kit.
08:46I have a lot of this old enamel wear and it's so handy to use for sewing.
08:52So that can go up on our shelf too.
08:54Then you can, of course, use this particular tub for shoe care.
08:59It's really a handy place to clean shoes here in the laundry room.
09:03You can really scrub the bottoms of muddy boots or dirty shoes.
09:08This is just one of these stackable plastic bins.
09:11And for this tub, we are going to put in all our mesh bags.
09:15Bags that you can throw into the washer with fine stockings.
09:19Just wash right with the rest of your laundry.
09:21You don't worry about anything happening to those fine delicates.
09:27And so if they're in a handy place, they'll be easy to find.
09:31And now this tub, slightly larger, is for special ironing chores.
09:37I don't know how many of you know what this is.
09:39This is fine little nails, metal sticking up.
09:44This is the ironing surface that you would use for steaming velvet
09:47or any kind of fabric that has a raised nap.
09:50It's known as a needle board or a velvet board.
09:53If you have little girls who love velvet dresses,
09:56you'll just lay the velvet and steam it nap side down.
10:00So this is great.
10:01This is one of our ironing cloths and portable.
10:04If you're doing a sewing project somewhere in your house
10:07and you want to iron, this is a great surface on which to iron.
10:10And of course, an ironing cloth.
10:12This is for steaming the lapels of suits so you don't get that shiny look.
10:18And these are called ironing hams.
10:20This inserts into a sleeve.
10:22It has an ironing board fabric cover here.
10:24And they're called hams because I think they look like hams.
10:28Here's another larger one for the front of a jacket.
10:31So now back here, we have baking soda in a permanent tub.
10:37And you can pour the baking soda out.
10:39Or if you slide it back further, you can measure it out with a little scoop.
10:44Very handy.
10:45And this looks nice right up here next to our large size detergent.
10:49What I like to do when I'm buying detergent is look for unscented liquid or powdered detergents.
10:56Powdered detergents are really good for mud and clay in hard water.
10:59And liquid is better for greasy stains or everyday kind of laundry.
11:04And up here are our lint brush refills.
11:07Those are those sticky papers.
11:09And the lint brush is right here in this handy holder for sizing, for starch.
11:14A great little organizer.
11:16All of these machines are kind of complicated.
11:18And the manuals and the warranties are kept right here in this very handy magazine holder.
11:26We have moth balls.
11:27We have cedar balls.
11:29All my paper towels, I just put them up there so they're easily reached and easily accessible.
11:35Ironing board covers.
11:36A p-touch over here.
11:37P-touch shouldn't be underneath because I use that more than I use my ironing board covers.
11:42So that can stay here.
11:43Extra towels, laundry baskets, just for storage.
11:47Iron, the little travel steam iron, which is invaluable.
11:52And over here, our ironing board.
11:54And again, a sturdy, excellent ironing board.
11:57And it has this iron holder on the side.
12:01Oh, by the way, this is our new Rowenta iron.
12:03I adore this iron.
12:05This holds the water so you have a very accessible water source for steam and you can just leave
12:14your iron lying flat.
12:16It's a great addition to any laundry room.
12:19A rolling rack so that you can put your shirts on here once you iron them if you're not going
12:24to fold them up.
12:24And my favorite of all things in the ironing room is this mangle.
12:29And I use this all the time for fine linens and for dinner napkins and luncheon napkins.
12:35So that's basically the laundry room.
12:37It's well equipped.
12:38It's organized.
12:40It's a good thing.
12:41When you're packing for a trip, don't forget to take some laundry supplies.
12:45Just pack up a stain stick for those very hard to get out stains.
12:50A little bit of stain roller.
12:52This is one by Carbona.
12:55Some Woolite.
12:57This is great.
12:58It's a fine fabric wash for your very delicate sweaters.
13:02And I always carry a little bit of clear washing liquid.
13:06Non-scented.
13:08It's excellent for stockings, for underwear delicates.
13:13Always take a little sewing kit.
13:16Never know when that button or snap is going to pop off.
13:19And shout wipes.
13:21These are great for getting out little stains that might appear on the front of your clothes
13:27after dinner.
13:28And a lint roller.
13:30They don't pull your clothes.
13:32They just take off what you don't want.
13:36And don't forget a portable clothesline.
13:40This is elasticized, so it'll fit almost any space in a hotel room.
13:48And a mesh bag like this for your delicate washables in a washing machine.
13:52Or just to hold dirty laundry until you get around to washing it.
13:59And a nice little drain cover.
14:02This is great for filling the sink with water and soaking things overnight.
14:06And look, it's lightweight.
14:08It's very convenient.
14:10We've invited Jonathan Shear today, a friend of the magazines and an expert in the field
14:15of stain removal, to share his secret solutions for getting out those difficult stains.
14:20His firm is called Jay Shear and Company.
14:23And they specialize in cleaning and preserving wedding dresses.
14:26Jonathan has come up with a little kit that is essential for the home
14:31so that you can get pretty much everything out.
14:33Several things we have are very inexpensive.
14:36They're solvents.
14:37One is acetone, which is a dry solvent in the class of modern experience.
14:40But why do you call dry?
14:41I mean, it's wet.
14:42It is wet.
14:43That's correct.
14:43But it's a non-equal solvent.
14:45There's no water in it.
14:46It's a good, aggressive solvent.
14:47It's very volatile, which means it dries quickly.
14:50And this is good for grass stains?
14:51Acetone?
14:52It is good for grass stains.
14:52Oh, good.
14:53Excellent.
14:54There are some caveats, though, with the use of acetone.
14:56You don't want to use it on acetate fibers.
14:58It will melt acetate.
14:59We want to be very careful with the use of dry solvents.
15:02And we also want to use dry solvents in a well-ventilated area.
15:05It's very important.
15:06Petroleum jelly we use as a dam to create a barrier around certain types of stains
15:12that might explode in the course of cleaning at home.
15:16Then how do you get the petroleum jelly out?
15:18Then you get the petroleum jelly out with the acetone.
15:20Oh, brilliant.
15:21Right.
15:21Glycerin?
15:22Glycerin we use in combination with baking soda to remove old oil stains.
15:30And we mix a paste of glycerin and baking soda and some water, and it acts as a poultice.
15:37It sucks out the oil from old oily stains.
15:41Oh, I could have used that on my napkins?
15:42You could have.
15:43It takes a long time.
15:44What if I send them to the dry cleaner, would that be better?
15:46It might, depending on the dry cleaner.
15:50RIT, color remover.
15:51RIT is in the class of reducing bleaches.
15:54And at some point, we ought to talk about bleaches.
15:57Right.
15:58Because it's a very important topic in color removal, not stain removal.
16:02And it is sodium hydrosulfite.
16:06So that's for your blouse that you wash with the red towel.
16:09That is correct, as long as the blouse is white.
16:12Right.
16:13Or it's the last vestige of a dye from the red wine stain that is spilled on the white tablecloth.
16:19Oh, okay.
16:20Or the last vestige of jam or jelly that's spilled on a white shirt.
16:24I see.
16:25Now this is, oh, hydrogen peroxide.
16:273% hydrogen peroxide.
16:28It's a very mild oxidizing bleach.
16:31It's a much safer bleach than reducing bleaches.
16:33Okay, good.
16:33Ammonia?
16:34Ammonia is a very harsh alkaline gas that is here in a liquid form in water.
16:41And it is used to accentuate or increase the bleaching activity of oxygen bleaches,
16:48like hydrogen peroxide.
16:49Vinegar?
16:50Vinegar is also a very mild oxidizing bleach.
16:53The active ingredient in vinegar is acetic acid.
16:56And so when we're dealing with stains that require oxidizing bleach, like wine stains,
17:02berry stains.
17:04Right.
17:04It's important to make the determination beforehand whether you want to try this at home.
17:08Detergent.
17:09This detergent actually has an enzyme in it, which is a digestive agent.
17:15Digestive agents are very good for removing protein stains.
17:18Oh.
17:18Like?
17:18Like blood.
17:20Egg.
17:20Egg, bodily fluids, things like that, yup.
17:24Color safe bleach?
17:25Color safe.
17:26Non-chlorine bleach?
17:27This is non-chlorine bleach, yes.
17:28So this is like snowy or?
17:31It is exactly snowy bleach.
17:32It's sodium percarbonate, yes.
17:33There are more powerful oxidizing bleaches along with hydrogen peroxide.
17:37Now, alcohol.
17:39Alcohol.
17:40Isopropyl alcohol, 91%.
17:42Rubbing alcohol.
17:43Right.
17:44It is used also to remove pigments, inks, felt pens.
17:49The nice thing about alcohol is that it evaporates very quickly.
17:52And then the Argo cornstarch, this is, or any kind of cornstarch,
17:56to rub into what kind of stain?
17:58Well, I apply it to wet or oily stains.
18:02If you've just spilled something, particularly oil, you can apply the cornstarch to the stain.
18:07Cornstarch will actually suck that oil out of it.
18:09Once it dries, you can brush it away.
18:11It makes it much easier to reduce the stain.
18:13Great idea.
18:14And this, Orvis and...
18:16Finally, we have water.
18:17Orvis and water, which is pure sodium lauryl sulfate, which is the primary active ingredient in
18:24practically every detergent you buy in the supermarket.
18:28But it is actually used primarily as a shampoo for horses.
18:33That's what my horses are being washed in.
18:35That is exactly what they're being washed in.
18:36They love it, too.
18:37And you can buy enough Orvis for about $20 to fill several hundred bottles of detergents.
18:43Oh, how great.
18:44So we diluted what percent?
18:45Five percent.
18:46Oh, okay.
18:46In water.
18:47So all of these are the ingredients for all moving stains.
18:51But to remove the stains, you need these things.
18:54Well, we have other stuff here.
18:55Yeah.
18:56We have sea sponges.
18:58Cotton balls.
18:59Cotton balls and swabs.
19:01The difference largely depends on the area of staining.
19:03And eyedroppers.
19:05And we have eyedroppers that we use primarily also for our solvents.
19:09Good measuring spoons are always a handy thing to have.
19:12All right.
19:13Brushes.
19:13We have three different types of brushes, and they're all sort of important.
19:17They're important because we don't want to abrade the fabric.
19:21Exactly.
19:21And so we have to be very careful not only with the type of brush we use,
19:24but the activity that we use.
19:26This is a tamping brush.
19:28And it has a cotton or some kind of cellulosic surface on it.
19:32It's good for tamping.
19:34Okay.
19:35We have a very soft bristled toothbrush, which is good for brushing off things like
19:40baking soda that we've applied maybe to an oil stain.
19:44And we have a larger brush, which is also a soft bristled brush for larger stained areas.
19:50So that's pretty much some measuring cups.
19:52We have some measuring beakers.
19:54We have a basin to rinse water in.
19:56And enamel is good.
19:57And enamel is good.
19:58Enamel or glass is good.
19:59Both are good.
20:00And lastly, we have a hairdryer, which is always good to dry things.
20:04So the inexpensive hairdryer that you can get at the drugstore.
20:07Anywhere, as long as it has an air setting.
20:09That's king.
20:09And rags.
20:10We don't use heat.
20:12Lots of rags.
20:12Lots of rags.
20:13And we also have cheesecloth because it's very absorbent.
20:16Well, what a wealth of information.
20:17And what an easy kit to put together for your own laundry room,
20:22which will make your laundry room an effective stain removal center.

20:43Do you have a messy closet?
20:45Or do you have a closet where you're embarrassed to leave the door open?
20:49You shouldn't feel that way.
20:51And it really does take a little bit of effort.
20:53But once you're organized, you're going to be so happy and you're going to get to work on time.
20:58You're not going to spend a long time looking for that pair of shoes that's at the bottom of
21:02the pile. And getting organized is really, really fun.
21:07All you need are some basic pieces of equipment, like some really great hangers
21:11and see-through shoe boxes like this.
21:14If your shoes are dirty, you can wipe them with a cloth, but these look nice.
21:19I always stuff the toes of my good shoes with some folded up paper tissue.
21:25This keeps the toe nice and flat, and it also keeps any moisture that might have accumulated
21:31in the toe from damaging the shoe.
21:35Very easy to do.
21:38And just place your shoes toe to heel.
21:41You can also mark with a P-Touch the appropriate shoe box.
21:45This is black dress flats.
21:47Boots, another simple thing you take care of, stuff the toes with tissue.
21:51And then to keep the ankles and the calf parts of the boots nice and straight and upright,
21:57just fold a piece of shirt cardboard like this and place it right in the top of the boot.
22:03That way, the boot is going to look really good for a long, long time.
22:06And once a year, I condition the shoes with a nice silicone liquid and I do the soles too,
22:12just to make sure that they're extra watertight and extra long lived.
22:18So the shoes can go right on our lovely shelf here.
22:22The boots down here so that they're easily accessible.
22:26The shoes all in order.
22:31And your little shoe kit, very handy thing.
22:35I have a shoe kit with all the colors of polish that you need.
22:39A nice polish applicator, a buffing brush and shoe care goes right here.
22:46Now we have other things in the closet.
22:48This is really a towel rack, but it is great for keeping scarves from getting wrinkled.
22:55Hooks on your closet door.
22:56Very handy for hanging a extra jacket or a laundry bag like this for a delicate laundry.
23:04And if you'd like to have a hamper in your closet, you can have a cloth lined hamper.
23:08This is great because I can just pull out the bag and take it to the laundry.
23:13But it's nice to keep your dirty laundry right here in a basket.
23:18And a basket's great because it breathes.
23:20Don't put it in something metallic or airtight.
23:23When I bring things home from the dry cleaners,
23:27I like to take them out of the bag.
23:29And if they're expensive clothes, I like to take them off the hangers.
23:35And you know what?
23:36I give the hangers back to the cleaners.
23:38It's a good idea.
23:39They appreciate getting the hangers back.
23:41And I like to just put my jackets on a wooden hanger.
23:48And I take the pants.
23:49This is just a little denim suit that I happen to love.
23:55And I'll hang the pants too right here.
23:59That way, the garment is ready to wear when I need it in perfect condition.
24:04And I don't have to spend any time ironing before I go to work in the morning.
24:09There, that's excellent.
24:13I keep these little cedar hangers in amidst anything that's woolen or cashmere,
24:18just to keep them fresh.
24:21All my shirts are always hung like this.
24:23One button is good to button to.
24:26Just to keep it from getting wrinkled down the front.
24:28Very important.
24:30And now pants.
24:31Oh, first belts.
24:33This is a nice little belt hanger.
24:35You can have several of these if you have a lot of belts.
24:38But it's so easy to find the belt you're looking for.
24:42And pants should be hung on hangers like this.
24:46And one nice thing to do is cut yourself some little rectangles of felt like this.
24:51So that you don't get marks on your pants.
24:54Especially leather pants, silk pants.
24:56You don't want to have marks on the waist.
24:58It takes a second, but it saves the waistbands.
25:03Silks, delicate shirts like this, always on a padded hanger.
25:06That way you don't get puffs on your shoulders.
25:10It is a very convenient way to keep beautiful soft clothing.
25:15And evening dresses.
25:17Well, I like keeping them in see-through bags so that I know that they're ready to put on,
25:22just in case I'm going to a party.
25:24This little basket is great.
25:26This is really a basket from a dish rack.
25:29But it's the perfect size for a nice little lint remover and a lint remover for coats.
25:37Also a D-pillar.
25:38You know how handy those are for sweaters.
25:41And static guard.
25:42Very important.
25:44If your house is dry and your woolen clothes create a lot of static or your silk clothes.
25:50Spare button box.
25:51You know how good suits and blouses come with an extra button or two?
25:56Put them right in this box.
25:57I even write on a little package what outfit the button comes from.
26:02This is really useful when you lose a button.
26:05Mending supplies.
26:08Typical pins, needles, buttonhole threads.
26:12Anything that you need, just in case.
26:14And now winter sweaters, we always use an acid-free tissue.
26:19I keep a big box of acid-free tissue handy.
26:24And I fold up my sweaters.
26:26I don't like to hang sweaters because they do get those bumps on the shoulders from the hangers.
26:34And this is ready to put right into one of these very nice cloth and clear bags.
26:41You could add a couple of little cedar balls, which I love, just to keep this sweater fresh.
26:48And even if it gets cool and you have to take the sweater out for a summertime boat ride,
26:54it's there, it's handy, and it's ready to wear.
26:57And this can go right up here on our shelf.
27:01And the extra cedar balls, well, you can just actually hang them on a hanger.
27:06And they're ready to use next time you need one.
27:09These are extra handbags, t-shirts, camisoles, t-shirts and sweaters that I wear more frequently.
27:16I feel really ready to find everything that I want to find when I need to find it.
27:23Now, you can also go through your closet at least twice a year.
