SCP-817 is a humanoid of indeterminate gender and variable physical features, although genetic testing suggests it was once a young Asian male. SCP-817 periodically undergoes radical metamorphic changes to its physiology. The delay between metamorphic events varies but is usually about two (2) to three (3) months. These shifts and the physiological abnormalities produced cause SCP-817 enormous pain, however it seems to suffer no actual damage to its body systems. Additionally, SCP-817 seems to be incapable of deliberately injuring itself.

00:00Almost no anomaly discovered by the SCP Foundation requires more dedicated containment resources than SCP-817.
00:07So much so, that we can only ever tell you the methods being used to contain the anomaly right now.
00:14But by the time this video is animated and released, it's likely to already have changed.
00:19Sometimes, SCP-817 can be a harmless, even tragic creature who causes more misery for itself than anything else.
00:26But in a month's time, it might be something with the power to end the world as we know it
00:31again.
00:32Right now, it's held in a solitary confinement chamber in a Foundation containment site that I'm not authorized to disclose
00:39in this video due to security risks.
00:41What I can't explain to you is the frankly insane amount of containment procedures built into this one cell.
00:47There are AI-powered sniper turrets designed to fire sedative darts, but can alternate into firing .50 caliber armor-piercing
00:53bullets if the situation requires it.
00:56There are pumps that could very quickly fill the chamber with a sedative gas so powerful, it would likely kill
01:01a rampaging elephant and, alternatively, completely deoxygenate the room in four seconds flat.
01:07If that fails, there's also a mechanism that can completely fill the chamber with water and electrify that water with
01:12an insane degree of voltage if the need arises.
01:15This same mechanism, in more extreme scenarios, can be used to dispense powerful, acidic, or alkaline solutions that could melt
01:23an M1 Abrams tank in less than 20 minutes.
01:26There are also a series of one-way chutes designed to dispense quick-hardening, expanding foam that would effectively turn
01:32the entire room into the equivalent of a solid concrete cube.
01:35And if all else fails, there's a tank filled with over 300 black flies, because in any form that it
01:42happens to take, SCP-817 has a debilitating phobia of black flies.
01:48That's because, while SCP-817 is cursed with a consistent and extremely tormented mind, its body is subject to constant
01:56flux.
01:57Before this random metamorphism disease took hold, the subject was once a young Asian man, with pre-existing mental health
02:03troubles and a history of dissociative and psychotic personality disorders.
02:07It seems that, through some unknown biological means, the fractures present in 817's mind are equally present in the unfortunate
02:15man's very biology.
02:16The result? Every two to three months, it will undergo a radical full-body transformation, a process that's extremely painful
02:23and distressing, but never seems to cause any lasting damage.
02:27But if it's awful for 817, that's nothing compared to the headache that it's been for the researchers, guards, and
02:33containment specialists at the SCP Foundation.
02:36Because every time 817 undergoes a radical new transformation, the staff are left scrambling to devise new containment procedures on
02:43the fly, before the body count starts climbing.
02:46It's hard to contain SCP-817, but do you know what else is hard to contain?
02:51Your excitement when you subscribe to SCP Explained, and receive a constant stream of human-made animated explorations into the
02:58weird and wild world of the SCP Foundation.
03:01Now, back to the horrors.
03:03Currently, we're looking at one of 817's more reserved transformations, and be warned, some of the more violent and disturbing
03:10ones are on the way.
03:11While maintaining a vaguely human head, neck, and jaw structure, the majority of its body has taken on the appearance
03:17of a large, bat-like creature, with huge, leathery wings instead of arms.
03:21If this wasn't strange enough, part of the pain and distress caused in the process seems to be the result
03:27of all of 817's bones changing their composition entirely.
03:31They have gone from the calcium-based bones that we humans have to a hollow, polymer-based bone structure, unlike
03:37any other living, organic creature here on Earth.
03:39However, while these bones are strange and unnatural, given that the bones are the heaviest parts of our body, they
03:46do make 817 light enough to fly by flapping its wing arms.
03:50However, the process of doing this uses up a huge amount of energy, and as a result, he needs to
03:55be fed large portions of raw meat every single day to remain somewhat healthy.
04:00The Foundation has also had to devise a padded confinement cell for this particular form.
04:05This is to prevent him from injuring himself by flying too fast at the ceiling or walls.
04:10The temperature is kept eternally at 18 degrees Celsius with air conditioning technology.
04:15This is another necessary health and comfort mechanism.
04:18The extreme metabolism of SCP-817 can cause its body to heat up to a temperature that's extremely uncomfortable for
04:25someone with even a partially human physiology.
04:28Whenever 817, in its current form, is allowed out of itself for tests or enrichment time, it's mandatory for no
04:36fewer than five armed guards to be present.
04:38On top of this, a specifically developed muzzle was created to fit around the creature's head to prevent it from
04:43trying to unhinge its jaws and eat any staff members.
04:47Containment specialists have also devised special restraints in order to prevent it from flying away in or outside the facility
04:53and causing injury to itself or others in the process.
04:56But, as stated before, this is honestly SCP-817 at its most mercifully low-key.
05:03Transformation events set in every two to three months and cause a considerable psychotic episode for 817 itself.
05:09This results in it being confused, violent, and delirious, often attacking staff members on site.
05:16Naturally, they've been working on pharmacological options such as swallowed or intravenously injected anti-psychotic medication to help tamp down
05:24the worst of some of 817's episodes.
05:26However, making anti-psychotic medication that actually works is heavily predicated on understanding the physiology of the entity you're dosing.
05:35Typically, by the time that our scientists are keyed in and working on the early experimental phases of the drugs,
05:41817 has already undergone a complete change in physiology, rendering any of the earlier developments completely useless in practice.
05:50There's no denying that this anomaly is a complete biological marvel, even though the anomalous attributes make life a living
05:56hell for 817 itself, and a massive, often dangerous inconvenience for the staff working around it.
06:02The various forms of 817 have given it the ability to store energy in a variety of ways from the
06:08world around it.
06:09But the amazing, and I'll admit somewhat terrifying thing is, all our tests have indicated that in its time in
06:16Foundation containment, it's only ever released 10% of all that energy.
06:21The rest is stored.
06:23How?
06:24Put simply, we don't know.
06:26Especially given how the biological mechanisms of 817 for storing energy keep changing.
06:31It also raises the question, why is the anomaly keeping so much energy in reserves?
06:37Is there some particularly large and terrifying anomalous transformation that we have to worry about in the future that will
06:43actually draw on all this energy?
06:44We'll cross or be flattened by that bridge when we get to it.
06:49Sometimes we, and it, have been blessed with relatively minor or benign transformations.
06:53But this has often felt more like the exception that proves the rule.
06:58Let me see if I can find some of the case studies on some of the more remarkable transformations.
07:03Ah, yes.
07:04Wow, these are even more messed up than I remember them.
07:07On its second ever transformation, 817 transformed into an attractive young woman, which made an inexperienced guard fear there'd been
07:15some kind of containment mix-up and attempted to open the door.
07:18This was a terrible mistake, but one that he didn't need to be reprimanded for because he didn't live that
07:25long.
07:25The woman in the cell immediately charged forward and began strangling him, screaming in the grip of delusions that he
07:31was part of some kind of CIA organ harvesting scheme trying to steal her kidneys.
07:36As the guard's flesh began to melt, he quickly found out that the woman's pores were constantly leaking an extremely
07:42corrosive acid solution, as well as a highly toxic gas.
07:46Nobody heard him screaming because his vocal cords and trachea being in direct contact with her hands were some of
07:52the first things to melt.
07:53She then charged around the halls of the containment site, attacking and brutally melting different guards, researchers, and administrative staff
08:00as she encountered them.
08:01All that remained was a trail of bubbling slime and melting ground behind her.
08:06Bullets and blunt force trauma proved to be ineffective, due to the weapons melting before any meaningful damage could be
08:12done.
08:12It took the use of a powerful electric shock to incapacitate her and bring her back to her cell.
08:17This needed to be redesigned from the ground up to feature a hyper-durable, acid-proof drainage system to prevent
08:23the room from completely overflowing and melting in the process.
08:27Needless to say, everyone was grateful when 817 cycled out of this particular form.
08:33The next couldn't have been more different.
08:35While being relatively docile, despite the inevitable psychotic episode, this form was long, thin, and androgynous, with obsidian black skin
08:44that had a reflection index of almost zero.
08:46This bizarre form had no visible orifices anywhere on its body, sensory, excretory, digestive, or reproductive.
08:53Instead, it gained all of its sustenance from absorbing solar energy directly through its skin with a previously thought-to
09:00-be-impossible 100% plus efficiency rating.
09:04The effect was so marvelous that the Foundation, even for a time, tried to study this iteration of 817's skin
09:10to see if it could inform more powerful solar panel technology.
09:14But, as you've probably already expected, 817 sadly cycled out of this form before any truly meaningful study could get
09:21underway, and as if to rub salt in the wound, its next form proved to be even more of a
09:26nightmare for Foundation staff to contain.
09:28He did, on the positive end, take a form more superficially resembling his original pre-anomaly human look.
09:36On the negative end, that form was translucent and capable of phasing through any solid object at will like a
09:41ghost.
09:42The transformation process also, as expected, caused considerable mental distress to SCP-817, and it was observed clawing at its
09:51face in dismay as the change took hold.
09:52Then, the true chaos began.
09:55He began running around the containment facility, easily passing through walls and always screaming in extreme distress.
10:01Just a perpetual, never-ending howl of pure animal misery.
10:05Which, in turn, caused huge amounts of stress to Foundation staff when he'd suddenly phased through the wall of the
10:11room, screaming like a lunatic, before passing straight out again.
10:15That honestly seems rather small potatoes compared to the fact that this form also emitted a small but detectable dose
10:21of gamma radiation.
10:22Meaning that anyone exposed to him during this escape attempt needed to submit for radiation sickness and cancer screening.
10:29Tranquilizer darts simply passed through him.
10:31Sleeping gas also failed to stop his running and screaming.
10:34The only thing that eventually stopped him in the end was when he ran into a completely deoxygenated chamber and
10:40passed out mid screaming.
10:42Guards in radiation hazmat suits carried him back to his chamber, which was now reinforced with similar metals to the
10:48ones used in nuclear power plants.
10:50But the horrors of all these seemed to pale in comparison to a form that everyone who had the misfortune
10:55of dealing with it called the Behemoth.
10:58Everyone should have probably known something was wrong when the transformation period, and all of the typical rocking and begging
11:04and screaming that came with it, came a little later than usual.
11:08And when it began, it lasted multiple days.
11:12During most of this time, he didn't seem to display any notable physical changes at all.
11:16Everyone dared to think that perhaps this would be one of the rare chill ones, as it's known in Foundation
11:21parlance.
11:22Then, SCP-817 started to grow.
11:26His muscles and bones warped painfully, ripping up his clothes as he bulged out of them.
11:32His height grew dramatically too, from a relatively average 5'8", to a truly terrifying 8'2".
11:39Despite his size, his skin pulled freakishly tight over his new frame.
11:43He was also far faster than anyone could have expected.
11:46What researchers would later discover was making all this possible was the fact that SCP-817 had developed 10 large
11:53hearts connected to an extremely complicated circulatory system, pumping an unknown ichor throughout the anomaly's body.
12:01There were three more additional hearts that served mainly to oxygenate the first 10, giving the anomaly a total of
12:0713 hearts.
12:08And to run a body that large, as the unfortunate guards and researchers posted in the section were about to
12:13find out, you need to consume a huge amount of protein.
12:18Everyone in the hall was startled to the point of being almost stunned when the door to 817's containment chamber
12:23was simply punched out of the frame, before 817's new form swelled out of the hallway.
12:28Not only was it suffering from the normal level of violent psychosis, it was also further enraged by the fact
12:34that literally anything touching its body caused it pain.
12:37And that includes when its feet came into contact with the ground.
12:41One nearby guard drew his sidearm and attempted to fire on the creature, but the .45 ACP round simply bounced
12:47off of its skin.
12:48While everyone else fled, 817 wrapped a huge, muscular hand around the guard's torso with bone-crushing strength, before lifting
12:55him up and eating him alive.
12:57By the time any other guards arrived, 817 was slurping down the last of the first guard's legs.
13:02What followed was nothing short of a rampage. All conventional weaponry seemed to fail in subduing 817's new form, and
13:10no attempt to heighten its pain caused any kind of overload or burnout.
13:14It was like fighting a homicidally hungry Incredible Hulk. Over ten guards were either crushed, ripped apart, or eaten like
13:20a subway sandwich within the first hour of the containment breach.
13:23Neither deoxygenation or sleeping gas nor electric shocks seemed to make any kind of difference.
13:29This was when, by pure accident, damage caused by the rampage released a swarm of black flies being kept as
13:36food source for another anomaly.
13:37In the face of these mere flies, the Behemoth cowered and wept, and the guards were able to use the
13:43flies as a way of coaxing 817 back into its containment chamber and locking it away.
13:48Until the next transformation, anyway.
13:50Now check out SCP-291, Disassembler Reassembler, and SCP-3312, Oh Whoa, What's This? for more.
13:59more.
13:59you
