Short filmTranscript
00:00It was a freezing day in April 1972 when Agent Yuri Petrov, one of the top field agents of the
00:06SCP Foundation's Russian branch, almost died in a military hospital 20 miles outside of Smolensk.
00:12The Foundation intercepted radio chatter between the hospital and the Kremlin that hinted at
00:16anomalous experiments going on inside the premises. So Yuri was given a cover story and
00:22infiltrated the hospital as a cleaner, instructed to observe and report any anomalies he happened
00:27to notice within the facility. The last thing that he expected was to be noticed first. It happened
00:34while he was mopping up after a long day's work. All he heard was the sound of a pair of
00:38boots and
00:39another pair of smart dress shoes tapping down the immaculately polished floor tiles behind him.
00:44The next thing he knew, he had the barrel of a suppressed Nagant M1895 revolver, one of the only
00:50revolvers in the world that you can actually suppress, pressed up against the back of his head.
00:55He said, Mr. Petrov, a calm voice said from behind him, I'm afraid you're going to need to come with
01:00us. He could see both men out of the corner of his eye. The one holding the Nagant was dressed
01:06in
01:06distinctive Spetsnaz army fatigues, and the other, who had a TT-30 pistol holstered in his belt,
01:13was dressed in a sharp suit. No doubt a member of GRU Division P, the Soviet answer to the SCP
01:19Foundation. Of course they would be the ones to sniff him out. Yuri wasn't stupid. He knew that
01:25if he complied here, he'd likely end up tortured and then shot, once they were convinced they'd
01:29gotten all the useful information out of him. In a situation like this, it was always better to
01:35just take your chances. The Spetsnaz operative pulled back the hammer on the Nagant with his
01:39thumb. You're testing my patience, Petrov. Rather than a witty retort, Yuri instead kicked the side of
01:45his mop bucket, spraying filthy water on them and making them instinctively raise their arms.
01:50He darted away down the hall, mop in hand, as the two gave chase. The Division P agent had pulled
01:56his TT-30 now, and begun firing shots after him, which Yuri was only narrowly able to dodge.
02:02Doing anything he could to avoid his pursuers, he ducked into a nearby room, one that, in all of his
02:07reconnaissance, he'd somehow never been able to scope out, and it would prove to be one of the most
02:12vital rooms for his particular mission in the entire facility.
02:17You know what else is vital? Keeping yourself entertained right here on YouTube. And there's no
02:22better way to do that than subscribing to SCP Explained, where we produce original animated
02:27videos exploring all the most fascinating anomalies in the SCP Foundation catalog. And if you want to make
02:33sure you never miss one, I recommend you hit the notification bell, which will guarantee that you'll
02:38get informed every time a new video comes out. Back in the secret room, Yuri was staring at a strange
02:44sight for a military hospital. A teenage girl, with strange, damaged skin, and half of her hair having
02:51fallen out, sitting immersed in a tub of water. She stared at Yuri with curious eyes, a curiosity that he
02:57very much returned, but before he could ask her a question, the door behind him burst open. The soldier
03:03and the division agent entered, guns blazing. Yuri didn't have time to draw the Makarov he'd hidden
03:08beneath his overalls. Instead, he needed to use what he already had in his hands, the mop. While the girl
03:14in the tub watched in fascination, Yuri spun the mop around with the accuracy of a Shaolin monk, striking
03:20the weapons out of his opponent's hands. In the same motion, he brought the hard mop handle down onto the
03:26back of the division agent's neck, knocking him unconscious. The Spetsnaz soldier wouldn't be so easy.
03:31Yuri. Before Yuri could even turn around, he'd already unearthed his taiga-style machete and swung
03:36for him. Yuri lifted the mop handle to block, and the machete's swing sliced it in half, a couple
03:42inches off, and that would have been Yuri's skull. He didn't intend to give the Spetsnaz operator another
03:47chance. Yuri dodged another swing, and then shoved the bottom half of the broken mop handle directly
03:53into the soldier's chest, piercing straight through his heart. The man fell to the ground with a heavy
03:58thud, bleeding out onto the tiles as Yuri painted with exhaustion. Strangely, the girl in the tub
04:04didn't seem at all phased by the violence she'd just witnessed. Instead, she watched the expanded
04:09pool of the soldier's blood with rapt attention. Yuri would later write in his report that he could see
04:14the hunger in the girl's eyes. She reached forward and placed her hand into the pool of blood, and
04:20Yuri was astonished to see the puddle shrink inwards towards her hand, seeping into the girl's skin.
04:25And as the girl seemingly drank the blood through her palm, Yuri saw a healthy coloration returning
04:31to her skin, and her hair beginning to rapidly grow out of the bald patches on her head. By the
04:37time all the blood was gone from the floor, she looked like any other teenage girl. And just like
04:43that, Yuri had found his anomaly. The girl, whose appearance matched that of a missing teenager,
04:49Vronka Lagonova, was soon taken in by the Russian branch of the SCP Foundation. Certain anomalous
04:55attributes were immediately apparent. She was often deathly ill, with symptoms that manifested
05:00in a similar manner to acute radiation sickness. She also had no ability to consume or digest
05:06standard food or drink. The only thing that provided respite from her symptoms was the absorption
05:11of human blood through her skin. In order to study this in more detail, she was sent to the
05:16Advanced Biological Facilities based in the Site Iridate campus of Italy. There, she was designated
05:22SCP-026-IT, the Human Leech. One of the many files transferred into the custody of the Foundation's
05:29Italian branch from the Russian division was an interview log conducted in Russian between the
05:34Human Leech and Dr. Nina Sokolova, who transferred to the Italian branch in order to continue her work
05:40on the SCP-026-IT case. Interestingly, Dr. Sokolova is one of the only researchers whose very presence
05:48seems to imitate and strike fear into the heart of the anomaly. You could easily see in the video
05:54recording of the interview that she avoids eye contact with the researcher, speaks quietly, and seems to
05:59uncomfortably swallow saliva. Through Dr. Sokolova's incredibly direct, no-nonsense attitude makes it clear to
06:06almost anyone why she is the kind of woman whose time you really wouldn't want to waste.
06:12She stepped into the containment chamber from across the anomaly's tank and took a seat
06:16as the recording began. She took fastidious notes in her leather-bound notebook.
06:20All right, we're all set. SCP-026-IT, let's get started, she said without looking up.
06:27The anomaly shrank away, meekly offering,
06:30If you don't mind, you can call me Veronica.
06:32With a simple, withering dismissiveness that could cause a vase full of daisies to wilt,
06:37Dr. Sokolova simply said,
06:39That won't be necessary. Can we start?
06:42Veronica cowed, replied,
06:43Okay.
06:44So first of all, what do you know about your condition?
06:48Veronica shrugged.
06:49I have always been affected by a congenital syndrome.
06:52They wanted to name it after me, but I think right now my name only appears in my obituary.
06:57Dr. Sokolova had no time for maudlin theatrics.
07:00She'd long since hardened her heart to the plight of the anomalies under containment.
07:04It was the cause of doing business.
07:07Please don't digress. Do you know what this syndrome consists of?
07:11Sorry. My immune system was spontaneously attacking a variety of my tissues,
07:15resulting in symptoms similar to necrotizing fasciitis. When it attacked superficial tissues,
07:21doctors thought they could use immunosuppressant drugs to calm the symptoms.
07:26Interesting. Dr. Sokolova quickly checked her papers on Veronica's medical records,
07:31since she'd come to the foundation, including the courses of drugs she was being given.
07:35You are not currently taking immunosuppressant drugs, so I assume the therapy was changed some
07:40time ago. Veronica gave a meek nod from inside her tank. Yes, immunosuppressant drugs were not
07:47enough, so they were discontinued. The biggest fear of the doctors was that my immune system would
07:52attack the nerve or bone tissue. Then one day, I was offered to move to Russia,
07:57to a place bordering Siberia for an intensive research session. From what I've heard,
08:02there are a lot of people who are sick like me from all over the world.
08:05This was the most fascinating tidbit that she had revealed so far. Dr. Sokolova thought,
08:10as she took furious notes, they didn't have anything on this group, only information on the
08:14military hospital where they'd first discovered her, and even there, the details were sketchy.
08:19Was this some group of interest, trying to get anomalous individuals under their control for
08:24study or even utilization? Dr. Sokolova tried to hide the extent of her interest.
08:29Her time working in the KGB, Soviet Russia's intelligence service, before joining the foundation,
08:34had taught her many valuable lessons. Chief among them, as she was exercising here,
08:38was to never let anyone know how much you want something. Give that away, and suddenly your opponent
08:44has leverage. With the practice detached calm, the researcher said,
08:48Who offered you this opportunity? The same doctors who were treating you?
08:52Veronica nodded. Yes. They said they had received funds for the study of particularly rare diseases,
08:59like mine. But I suppose that was a lie, since the only memories I have of those days are of
09:05me
09:05falling asleep on the journeys on the way out. I have no memories of that time. None at all.
09:10A dead end. Still, Dr. Sokolova hid her disappointment behind an impenetrable mask of
09:16neutral professionalism. What are your earliest memories after that period of emptiness?
09:21I remember waking up in a military hospital, being told that a military patrol found me in an abandoned
09:28factory on the Siberian border, naked, alone, and unconscious. They were shocked that I had survived
09:34more than an hour in that state in the middle of Russian winter. And how were you? I mean,
09:40how are you now, or how were you before the trip? Veronica looked down again, focusing on the ground,
09:46as though she expected a trap door to open from which she could fetch up all those hazy memories.
09:51Right now, I spent in that hospital a few days before I was taken and detained indefinitely by you
09:58guys. Dr. Sokolova simply nodded. It seemed that would be the extent of the information she could
10:04extract from the human leech. She clicked her pen, stood up, and said, I see. This should be enough.
10:10Thank you for your patience. The log cut out there. Everything they learned about SCP-026-IT seemed to
10:17open up more questions than answers. How had she survived so many of those improbable circumstances,
10:23despite her clearly having such fragile health? Who had been the forces behind the mysterious doctors
10:28that had treated her in the warehouse out in the Russian wilderness? Was she always like this? Or was
10:34at least some of her condition a result of experiments that these doctors performed on her in order to
10:39treat some other pre-existing condition? All lines of inquiry that Dr. Sokolova feared would ultimately
10:46come up short, though she was too gripped by the intrigue of it all to miss the opportunity to work
10:51with
10:51the girl in Italy with more time and better funding. Ultimately, she thought, this girl is just a
10:57harmless victim of all this. The real mystery lies behind whoever did all this to her. And for the
11:03most part, Dr. Sokolova was right. Except for one thing. Veronica was not harmless. One of the biggest
11:10challenges to containing SCP-026-IT is keeping fed with a fresh supply of human blood, often taken from
11:17D-class donors. It's pumped into her water tank on a daily basis to make it easier to diffuse into
11:23her
11:24skin. Something the Foundation learned the hard way is that this blood must be as pure as possible,
11:29free of contaminants and diseases. If not, these impurities will manifest in radical physical and
11:35behavioral changes for Veronica. On May 25, 2002, this oversight was made. Blood taken from a diseased
11:43source was pumped into the girl's tank and, upon absorption, immediately caused her
11:47behavior to change. She became short-tempered, paranoid, psychotic, and aggressive, along with
11:53the typical hallmarks of acute radiation poisoning, with symptoms escalating throughout the course of
11:58the day. At 6.43 p.m., Veronica somehow depleted all the water in her tank by absorbing it into
12:04her
12:04body, a feat previously thought to be impossible. She demanded more infusions from staff who denied her
12:10request. This was how the Foundation discovered that when Veronica does consume infected blood,
12:15she seemingly becomes addicted to it, as though it's giving her some kind of narcotic effect through
12:21unknown means. Every time her requests were denied, her anger seemed to increase.
12:26At 7.17 p.m., Veronica underwent another psychotic episode, and this time summoned up seemingly unimaginable
12:33strength and used it to smash her way out of her container, attempting to make a beeline for the store
12:39of
12:39infected blood. Of course, nobody had any idea how Veronica was actually aware of this route she was
12:44taking, but she nevertheless was going the right way the whole time. In the course of her rampage,
12:50multiple guards and researchers attempted to stop her. This would be the last decision they ever made.
12:56Any attempts to physically subdue Veronica resulted in her reacting with extreme violence and aggression,
13:01crushing skulls and splattering torsos. During the course of the event,
13:05she killed eight different members of staff. The rampage was only brought to a halt at 7.43 p.m.,
13:10when she was surrounded by a large number of armed and armored guards in full-coverage hermetic
13:15suits with powerful stun prods. It took their combined effort to end the horrors,
13:20at which point Veronica was taken back to her containment chamber and given an infusion of clean
13:24blood, which made her return to normal over the next few hours. It's a sobering reminder that no
13:30matter how innocent or even pitiful an anomaly seems to be, they often defy explanation and prediction
13:36of future behavior. And it's exactly when you feel the safest that you're in the most danger of all.
13:43Now check out SCP-3989, The Bone Orchard, and SCP-1861, The Crew of the HMS Wintersheimer, for more.
