00:00Naughty boys got up to at Silverstone last time out.
00:20Reid's on the grass, he hits Thompson!
00:22Knocks him sideways and he's through!
00:24Reid and McNeil on the grass!
00:27A controversial third race there at Silverstone with Anthony Reid ruffling a few feathers.
00:34But it still remained to be seen what, if any, punishment would be dished out.
00:39Both James Thompson and McNeil felt they had cause to be angry with WSR's Anthony Reid.
00:44Neil thought he'd been rudely barged out of the way while battling for the lead.
00:49And his feelings were clear to see after the race.
00:52That is bloody outrageous what you did.
00:59But it was Reid's move on Thompson that incurred the wrath of the stewards,
01:02with the Scott initially excluded from the race, then following appeal having ten seconds added,
01:06dropping him to fourth to the dismay of his rivals.
01:09He should have been excluded or at least dropped behind me.
01:12You know, that would have been a fairer penalty.
01:14I mean, he only Drew moved back two places.
01:15The ten-second penalty was, you know, the exclusion really is going to cut out that sort of thing.
01:20At the end of the day, you can't go for a gap if there isn't a gap there.
01:24The situation between Thompson and myself is the sort of thing that you will see ten to fifteen times in any given race.
01:30I suppose because James is the championship leader, you know, it was never in the script, I think.
01:35That's what I feel.
01:36So I made a bit of contact with Thompson.
01:38To my view, that was racing.
01:40Well, he's getting pretty old these days, maybe a bit of senile dementia setting in, you know.
01:44He clearly has a different idea to race into what I do.
01:48So, Anthony was frustrated to be on the receiving end of a Stewart inquiry,
01:53but we wanted to learn more about the sensitive process of handing out penalties.
01:57We always look at all the video, the on-car video, take statements from drivers, hear from drivers.
02:03Sometimes you don't take statements, sometimes they give you a statement before you want them.
02:08If necessary, we can look at things like data logging.
02:11And as you know, we have a lot of television footage that is available to us that maybe the viewers don't see.
02:16We looked at this incident and felt we needed to take fairly strong action on it,
02:21particularly as one car was completely off the circuit, all four wheels,
02:25and that's the reason we took the action we did.
02:28The drivers have always got a right to appeal the situation,
02:32which they did to the stewards,
02:35and the stewards took a different, slightly different feel on that decision.
02:39On track, closed racing will always produce a bit of rubbing, you know,
02:42and rubbing is racing.
02:44It's when it goes over the line and you destroy someone else's race by punting them off or whatever,
02:50either deliberately or by accident,
02:52is when, you know, as I said, they've gone over the line a little bit.
02:55But, you know, it's good, close, hard racing.
02:57You've got to expect a certain amount of contact.
02:59The funny thing is, the clerk of the course says to us,
03:02more often than not, in the driver's briefing prior to each race meeting,
03:05you know, we understand it's a contact sport.
03:07We just don't want to see people crashing.
03:09Well, I mean, that's like the Royal Navy, two centuries ago,
03:12rationing their sailors with rum and then having to give them the lash for being drunk.
03:17I mean, where'd you draw the line?
03:20Tempers were still raw as the drivers arrived at Alton Park,
03:23where at least Thompson had the benefit of a virtually unballasted car.
03:27He set the pace in both free practice sessions
03:29and ended up a tenth of a second faster than his teammate Muller.
03:33So the current championship leader, James Thompson, starts on pole for race one here at Alton Park.
03:38Can he hang on to his lead? Find out after the break.

03:49With you all the way.
03:53If you're not using Roundup, that perennial weed you thought was dead
03:57could come back again and again.
04:00Most weed killers only kill the leaves. Roundup kills the root.
04:04And if a weed doesn't have any roots, it can never come back.
04:07Now, Roundup comes in one easily adjustable pull and spray pack.
04:12A single shot for a single weed,
04:14or spray and spray with pull and spray for an overgrown jungle.
04:18Roundup. Kills the root. Kills the weed.

07:33You come first, every time.
07:40From the wide, fast, airfield-style circuit of Silverstone,
07:43we've now come to the narrow Parkland-style circuit of Alton Park in Cheshire.
07:47And to help me look at the circuit, I've got Charlie Butler Henderson,
07:50from Team Short Term Direct.
07:52Brother, of course, of our very own Vicky.
07:54Morning, Charlie.
07:55Morning, Tim.
07:56Let's go take a look.
07:57OK.
07:58So, Charlie, you're starting at Levens, funneling into this corner.
08:07It's very narrow.
08:08Where are you trying to be on the circuit?
08:10Well, staying on the tarmac preferably, but there is a load of grass crete on the left-hand side
08:14that you can wing it on the outside and maybe go for a daring move around the outside and go on the grass.
08:19Moving away from Old Hall, the next series of corners is the downhill Dentons and Cascades bends.
08:25Crucial for getting a good exit onto Lakeside to set up an out-breaking point at our next stop.
08:31So, Charlie, Island Bend is the slowest corner on the track. What's your approach here?
08:36Basically, break as late as you possibly can, but then concentrate on the exit
08:40because there's a really, really, really steep hill on the exit that you need to get the power on early.
08:45Leaving Island Bend, the driver can stretch their legs and run the engines to the maximum on the run down to Nickerbrook.
08:51A slightly sweeping chicane, much improved over the old-style chicane,
08:56and then a good exit up Clay Hill, again up to top speed before we get to our next stop.
09:02Charlie, you talk about this corner being the daddy of all corners.
09:05It is a great corner because Alton Park is so narrow, flowing and quite twisty as well.
09:10This has got very, very little runoff and it's one of the fastest corners, you know.
09:14Coming in entry, probably about 100 miles an hour in fifth gear, down into fourth,
09:19and just once you get the car settled, which is very quickly,
09:21you've got to just nail the throttle for a great run through the corner.
09:25The exit from Druids is really important as we approach what might be the last corner of the last lap of a touring car race, Lodge.
09:32A good overtaking point, but slightly bumpy and blind on the exit.
09:36Out of Lodge, it's the run up to the chequered flag and hopefully a good race result.
09:41Thanks, Charlie. We can see why it's a track loved by all the drivers,
09:49and now you've had a bit of extra coaching, we'll be expecting great things of you this afternoon.
09:53Yeah, definitely. Definitely a top ten finish in race one.
09:56I've missed out on it all year so far by finishing 11th, so it's got to be my...
10:00Hopefully you've brought me some luck.
10:01OK, good on you. Thank you, Tim.
10:03It's a champion's challenge on the front row as Thompson and Muller prepare for battle,
10:07but Matt Neill won from third on the grid at Silverstone,
10:09and that's where he is again with Colin Turkington alongside.
10:12Heinz's best effort in qualifying so far puts him fifth, ahead of Anthony Reid, our favourite villain.
10:16Rob Collard is seventh in the Vauxhall, and Sean Watson-Smith has Proton's best qualifying effort of the year.
10:21Carl Brees is ninth in the short-term Alfa with Silverstone sparring partner Huff alongside.
10:26Vala Henderson is tenth with experienced James Kaye in eleventh,
10:29but behind them are Silverstone race winner Tom Chilton and Thruxton star Jason Plato.
10:33Local lad Michael Bentwood says Alton's never been lucky for him,
10:36but out of luck in qualifying was Dan Eves, who needed an engine change and then had a clutch problem.
10:41Kelvin Burt suffered similar trouble, so starts at the back, and there's no John George this week.
10:46He's changing cars.
10:50Round ten of the 2004 Green Flag MSA British Touring Car Championship,
10:55all set to get underway here at Alton Park.
10:58It's a very even start from the two front row men, James Thompson and Ivan Muller.
11:02They're side by side as they head down towards, but it's Ivan Muller who's just got in front.
11:07Muller squeezes ahead from the outside of the front row.
11:10It's the Frenchman ahead of James Thompson.
11:12Colin Turkington coming up to third place in the MG.
11:15That's a great start from him, and Rob Collard up brilliantly.
11:18Justin Keane in trouble, but look at Collard in the silver car.
11:22He's come up to fourth as Butler Henderson gets squeezed out onto the grass,
11:26and I think also losing out there was Luke Hines and Carl Breeze.
11:30So two of the team's short-term cars in trouble as Muller leads Thompson,
11:34Turkington in third, Collard in fourth, and Matt Neill in fifth place not having made the best start.
11:39Yes, uncharacteristically bad starts from Matt Neill and James Thompson, which has allowed Muller in the slightly lighter voxel to get ahead of his teammate.
11:47But the man who absolutely did get it nailed was Rob Collard, as you say, and he's actually pressurizing the MG really hard on this first lap.
11:54Charlie Butler Henderson, unfortunately, as we know, lost a bit of time, so he's a bit further.
11:59In fact, he didn't lose too much time. Butler Henderson still there behind Luke Hines.
12:03There is Butler Henderson under pressure from James Kaye.
12:05There's a little bit of contact through Lodge Corner, but I think Kaye's nipped past, and that puts James Kaye now into ninth position.
12:12Butler Henderson in tenth. Behind them, Dan Eaves and Jason Plato.
12:15Butler Henderson, a difficult first lap he got on the outside at Cascades. There you can see the cars using that runoff.
12:21It's fairly safe to do that. It won't spin the car, but it does lose them traction.
12:25Now Matt Neill getting into his stride. He'll want to put the pressure very quickly on Rob Collard.
12:30He's trying to build a good run through Cascades. He's got a good engine in that Honda now.
12:34They've been working on the management system. Can Matt slide up the inside? We'll have to wait and see.
12:39Yes, he's looking up. He's looking. Matt Neill looking at the inside.
12:42He's going to try and push Collard wide and get on the right-hand side of him as they run down to Nickerbrook.
12:48But that's Richard Mark seemingly with further problems.
12:51Third place going well at the moment is Colin Turkington, and we haven't seen him finish on the podium yet.
12:56They're in trouble, I'm afraid. It's Marie Karaman and his teammate Sean Watson-Smith already out of the race.
13:03So both of them not having a particularly good run.
13:05Ivan Mullert leads from James Thompson in second. Those two pulling away just a little bit from Turkington in third.
13:11And Collard still under pressure from the orange car of Matt Neill.
13:14And Matt Neill goes for it on the inside. It's a large corner.
13:17Little bit of contact. He goes completely sideways, but he keeps control and in fact rejoins and hasn't lost any places.
13:24As a result of that, he's under pressure from Reid.
13:27Down towards Old Hall and Rob Collard for the moment can breathe a little easier, but Matt Neill almost had that place.
13:34Yeah, that was a very late lunge by Matt Neill and Rob didn't give him any room.
13:39Held his line as he's entitled to. Rob is committed to the corner.
13:42Very close. It's 50-50 really, but Matt just very lucky not to spin.
13:48Now he's got alongside him and he will have the inside for the Nickerbrook chicane.
13:53Yeah, but has he got the drive over the top of the hill and back down towards Nickerbrook.
13:58Here we go. Battle side by side. Matt Neill on the inside.
14:01Surely just gets through. Yes, he does. Clips the curve.
14:04Oh, and Collard giving him a little push. And look who's right behind them.
14:07It is Anthony Reid. Well, at least Matt Neill's managed to get a car between himself and the man that he fell out with.
14:13Fairly big time at Silverstone because now Reid's got to get past Collard.
14:17Well, maybe that was the impetus that Matt needed to get past Collard, seeing Reid in his mirrors.
14:21But let me just say, I think you're going to see a fairly subdued Anthony Reid the next few races.
14:27He's on nine penalty points on his license. If he gets to 12, the RAC will take his license away for an undetermined period of time.
14:35So really, Anthony Reid is one fine, one endorsement, one penalty away for potentially losing his license.
14:41So he's got to drive with that in mind. And of course, the other drivers know that and they can play on it to a certain extent.
14:47Now, this is the battle for third place. Colin Turkington in the MG going very wide out of Old Hall, as we've seen a number of cars do, but doesn't really lose any time.
14:56But here comes Matt Neil and he's had a great run there. He's now side by side with Turkington as they turn through Cascade.
15:02And they're still at it as they come through the left-hander and onto the straight up to about 130 miles an hour.
15:08Then hard on the brakes and Matt Neil with the advantage because he has the inside line into the hairpin.
15:13And he can indeed move up into third position. He had to work hard for that.
15:18Took him three corners, really, to make the move up into third place. But there's not a lot that Colin Turkington could do in the end.
15:25And look at Reid. Reid under real pressure for eighth place here from James Kaye. And of course, this group all involved in that vital battle for tenth place and pole position in race two.
15:37At the moment, Reid is eighth. James Kaye is ninth. Charlie Butler Henderson is in tenth place. That would give him pole in race two if he can hang on to it.
15:45I'm not sure that this won't all end in tears because it's very, very tight between them. And at the moment, Reid in front.
15:52Well, one of these five is going to get that ninth and tenth place, I suppose, which will be the front row of the group of the race two.
15:58And how important is that? There's some big pressure here. Big pressure on the back of Reid's car. Butler Henderson recovering after that bad start.
16:06I talked to him before this race about maybe driving a bit more tactically this weekend, putting himself in a good position.
16:12He'll be working out just how to do this. Look at Plato on the inside and Eves as well trying to get inside.
16:17Yeah, Plato is through and so is Dan Eves. Butler Henderson loses two places in one go there up towards Lodge Corner.
16:24And now Eves is trying to get past Jason Plato. And now it means that tenth position belongs to Jason Plato.
16:32There is James Kaye still trying to find a way past Anthony Reid, but this battle is not over yet.
16:38Seven laps completed. We're only just at half distance, just under half distance in this 15-lap race.
16:44Down through Cascades they come. Oh, and we've got a replay there of Justin Keene going off.
16:48That was on the exit of Lodge Corner just a moment ago. Doesn't look as though he hit anything.
16:52So hopefully he'll be able to continue. Luke Hines coming through the Nickerbrook chicane.
16:57Right behind Rob Huff. Good battle going on there. Into the chicane. And Butler Henderson gets knocked sideways there.
17:03And nipping past him goes down east. Butler Henderson pushed onto the grass slightly. It's always tight into that corner.
17:10And Butler Henderson was the one who paid the penalty. And off also is the alpha of Carl Breeze.
17:15That's pretty well buried, I think. The front wheels aren't going anywhere. And he's dug himself into the gravel trap.
17:21He's not going to continue. That's a great shame. Let's just take another look.
17:25Well, it was all going to go wrong between that group, wasn't it? It was all getting very close.
17:30Back up the front, the two that actually was holding everybody up. Anthony Reid and James Kaye. Still no difference there.
17:36But Plato back in the mix. Very unfortunate for Carl Breeze. He appeared to be getting on to terms with that group.
17:42This could play into the hands of Tom Chilton. He's had a quiet weekend, as you say. An engine change.
17:47Having carried the maximum weight from the last race at Silverstone. But Tom Chilton would be delighted if he could get up into tenth.
17:53That would really, really set his weekend up. Yeah, it would be fantastic at the moment. Jason Plato in tenth.
17:59Looking to get past James Kaye here. Kaye still can't find a way past Reid. Reid driving very sensibly.
18:05But defensively, he wants that eighth place finish. We'll see whether he can hold on to it.
18:11Kaye again very late. Having a little nudge down there. Hitting Reid. Oh, it's getting a little bit naughty.
18:17He's got to be careful. But Reid also has to be even more careful because he's the one with the penalty points.
18:22Jason Plato now with a run at the MG. And here comes Dan Eaves, also on the attack.
18:27Well, that was a little bit naughty by James Kaye. We saw it on here comes Plato now. But, but, uh, really is a mobile chicane, isn't he?
18:34He's holding everybody up. And, uh, I'm sure that, uh, he would have done exactly the same thing as James Kaye.
18:39But he won't be happy about it afterwards. But, uh, James certainly gained an advantage out of that.
18:44In the background, that was like Kelvin Burt running wide in one of the other team's short-term direct cars.
18:49Yeah, just, uh, he's made up some ground from the back. But as you say, something went a bit wrong there.
18:54So that's dropped him away again. Anthony Reid with that bumper flailing around.
18:58And the MG supporters will be sad to see him coming under some pressure.
19:01Uh, but Plato it is who's trying to get up the inside into Lodge Corner here.
19:05This could give Dan Eaves a good run out of the bend. Because he was able to take the ideal line in.
19:10And it may give him the overlap as they come up onto the main straight here.
19:14Absolutely. You read that perfectly, as did Dan Eaves himself. He saw what was happening with Reid blocking.
19:19Reid is just driving around the inside of the track now. He really, and Plato was able to go right around the outside of both of them.
19:26Oh! Fantastically. Oh! And there was getting, and Butler Henderson getting a shove from Michael Bedwood.
19:31And Jason Plato has gone right around the outside of those two. Dan Eaves now finally gets past Anthony Reid.
19:37Michael Bedwood's next up now to try and make a move on the MG.
19:41But Reid really struggling. He can't hold them back.
19:45And Plato in the end decided, well, the only way to do it was to go around the outside.
19:49That's what he did. That's put him into eighth. But problems for his teammate, Rob Hough.
19:53Now, I wonder what's happened there. Luke Hines also off at the same area. Let's see what happened.
19:58Hough was on the outside. Hines went for a lunge down the inside.
20:02Didn't look as though he was alongside as they went into the corner. Contact was made.
20:06And Hough able to continue, but I think it has damaged Luke Hines' car, because he's out and watching the rest of the race.
20:13Well, there is Rob Hough. And he's now coming under pressure from James Kaye. In fact, so Kaye taking advantage of all that situation.
20:19He gets laid on the brakes down the inside and through at Lodge.
20:23Rob Hough with damage to the front of his car. You can see all the brake ducts hanging down.
20:27And one of the other factors is that the SEATs, the ETCC cars, have different brakes to the British cars.
20:33And this circuit is one of the hardest circuits. Oh, a lockup from Collard there. Can he keep it on the track?
20:38Just keeps it on the track. Well, I said he was having problems with his brakes and he showed it to us there just on this last lap.
20:45But he could still, he's still going to recover and keep that excellent fifth place.
20:49But up front, it's all about Ivan Muller, who's going to take the first win of the day ahead of his teammate James Thompson.
20:56It's been close between the two of them. It all came down to that great getaway from the outside of the front row.
21:01Muller takes the win. Thompson finishes in second. And third place goes to Matt Neil, who had to battle his way back up the order after a tardy start himself in the Honda.
21:12Ivan Muller's second win of the season allows him to close within two points of Thompson.
21:17Matt Neil had to work for that third, but Turkington celebrates his best finish of the season in fourth.
21:21Anthony Reid's convoy-leading efforts were due to a misfiring engine, and he didn't even have the power to use top gear on the straights.
21:27But then again, our race winner also had his mirrors full throughout the race.
21:31Ivan, you look like you've hardly broken any step there.
21:34Yeah, you know, this race was very tough, like every race.
21:38But when you have a guy like Jimmy on your back, you can't do any mistake. Every tenth is important.
21:44You can see, after 15 laps, there is only eight tenths between Jimmy and me.
21:48So you have to be focused on that ten percent.
21:51We got a little bit of a drama with the clutch, and I had a bit of a horrible start, and then it was clawing it all back from then.
21:55But those two just managed to make a break, and it was too big to jump on them.
21:59A familiar-looking top three there, but in the coveted tenth spot, which becomes pole for race two, is Anthony Reid.
22:05However, he's got a few engine problems. Can I get them sorted before race two? Find out after the break.
