00:00We walked 15,000 steps across London and couldn't find a single AC unit available to buy.
00:06It's hot in the UK right now, record-breaking hot.
00:09At the top floor and I can't even breathe, it's ridiculous.
00:14But according to one consultancy group, it's estimated that less than 10% of UK homes have air conditioning.
00:20And they're also sold out across major retailers.
00:22So we went hunting to see if we could find an elusive unit.
00:25We visited seven different stores across the capital and spoke to workers.
00:28The message was clear.
00:30Any AC units they do get in sell out incredibly fast.
00:33And even fans are now nearly impossible to come by.
00:36One person told us to just give up on our search.
00:39We also looked online, but came up empty-handed.
00:42Londoners told us they're debating getting AC in their homes.
00:44But the price and lack of availability is putting them off.
00:48I think after this bout of heat, people are like, it's time to invest.
00:52But it's so expensive.
00:53So we got our nine-month-old baby.
00:55So it forced us to buy an Akon unit.
00:58And all the ones I've been looking at had gone up by like 70%, which annoyed me so much that
01:03I went and found a refurbished one on eBay.
01:05But that was a bit of a mistake because now it's leaking.
01:08So we know the pricing is definitely 20, 30, 40% higher due to demand.
01:13So we're going to hold off for a while.
01:15So how are Brits staying cool in the heat?
01:18I add three cold shower just to stay.
01:21Always get a bowl of water with some ice and put your feet in it.
01:25It's the best way, honestly.
01:27And you feel like you feel cooler.
01:28So that's what I've been doing and all my friends have been doing.
01:30We have quite a complex system of shutting blinds on either side of the house.
01:34So that the sun's not in that side of the house.
01:36So without AC, Brits will be finding other ways to stay cool.
01:39Whether that's water fights, ice creams or staying hydrated.
01:46So on today's episode of if you needed another reason to show up in the midterms,
01:52we got to take a trip to the UK.
01:54Yeah, the good old UK.
01:57And if you guys remember in a couple of the videos that I posted on, you know,
02:02World Cup fans coming here to America and absolutely loving it.
02:06And a couple of those clips, you had a lot of individuals talking about AC.
02:11Like, wow, Americans have AC everywhere.
02:14It's in businesses and all of this other stuff.
02:17And now, you know why.
02:22Because apparently in some of these other countries, AC is a luxury.
02:25And in places like the UK, they will fine you.
02:30Yeah, they will fine you for using AC too much.
02:34Not even kidding.
02:36Even in your car.
02:39Because, you know, climate change.
02:44You can't, you can't warm up the planet.
02:47We got to cool the planet.
02:48So no AC for you.
02:51You just get to sit in your hot old house and melt.
02:55Yeah.
02:56Check it out.
02:58What the UK are doing right now is absolutely insane.
03:03I didn't think it was real, but I've looked it up.
03:05This is real.
03:06Drivers trying to stay cool during the heatwave are being warned they could face 110 pound fines
03:12for running their air conditioning in their vehicles while stationary.
03:16Which apparently violates pollution laws.
03:19Let me just read you some of this report.
03:20Motorists attempting to cool down during the heatwave in stationary vehicles with the air conditioning running face fines under emission
03:28laws.
03:29With the RAC, which is kind of like AAA, like breakdown service, warning that engine idling causes pollution.
03:36Standard penalties for this are £40 if issued by a police officer or £80 from a civil enforcement officer.
03:44Both halved, luckily it's halved, if you pay for it early.
03:47Some authorities, especially around London area, are actually fining up to £110.
03:53This generally sounds like some kind of sick joke.
03:57It's actually pretty hot in the UK right now, but this is absolutely ridiculous.
04:02The thing is the Brits have paid for their vehicles.
04:04They're paying road tax on their vehicles.
04:07They can do what they want with their vehicles, whether the wheels are rolling or not.
04:11If you want to use your air conditioning inside your car, use it.
04:13And I know I'm going to get people in the comments saying they're not enforcing that.
04:17The fact is that they probably are.
04:20If it's in the law and it's made headline newspapers, I'm going to overlay on this clip.
04:24It's the fact that the UK have actually made laws for this.
04:29Right. What's your thoughts on this?
04:31Would you accept being told you cannot run air conditioning in your own car if your wheels aren't rolling?
04:39We all know the answer to that, right?
04:42There's no way that that could possibly happen here unless you allow these far leftist Democrats,
04:52which is what the Democrat Party currently is now, take over.
04:55Because that's who basically controlled the UK.
04:58The Democrat Party. Far leftist.
05:02So, uh, yeah, that's why I said, uh, another reason to show up in the midterm.
05:07So, if you want to keep your A.C. and keep people like this out of office, better show up.
05:12Every other country in the world with summers as hot as ours runs air con and has...
05:18No, no, no, no, no. You made such a generalization here.
05:22The poorest countries in the world, even India, the superpower,
05:26and, uh, most African countries have no access to domestic air con.
05:31I think what's interesting here is the average...
05:32So you're saying every country in the world?
05:34That's such an outrageous generalization.
05:37The West, yes, because in the West we want never to be uncomfortable.
05:41I don't want to be uncomfortable, right?
05:43But it's more than uncomfortable, Yasmin. People are dying.
05:46We have to think of the planet and it won't kill us not to have air con.
05:49No, no, but it literally is killing some people.
05:51Well, care homes, for example, where the most vulnerable are, okay, have facilities.
05:58Nurseries, schools.
05:59Nurseries and schools, you know, if you want to put...
06:03I don't have any of... Hospitals?
06:04Yeah. I think institutions are something else.
06:07We're talking about domestic use here.
06:09Okay, but there's also vulnerable people live in domestic facilities.
06:12I know, but we don't all have to have air con.
06:16Yasmin, would you feel the same if it was about heating in the winter?
06:19Would you feel the same about that?
06:21What do you mean?
06:22So, what we're saying is to save energy,
06:24we potentially restrict use of air cons domestically.
06:27Well, look, all the new forms of heating,
06:29and certainly the use of the new technologies...
06:33I totally approve of them.
06:35And actually, heat pumps are a way of...
06:37I can't do anything other than back whatever we're being told really works,
06:42because we've done nothing.
06:44As far as I'm aware as well, heat pumps,
06:46which is the new source that the government wants us to install and everything,
06:49that can actually cool your home as well as heat it up.
06:52So, there is actually an argument to say, Lara,
06:55that there are other ways and other methods we can use.
06:57Air con might actually be a fairly old-fashioned way of cooling our home,
07:01so maybe we need to look to some of the more modern methods.
07:03I mean, air con units have developed quite a lot
07:05over the last few decades.
07:07They've become far more efficient.
07:08They use convection energy.
07:09They're completely electric,
07:11so there's no need to burn fossil fuels to run them.
07:13And I think that is being missed from this debate.
07:15I'm sure there's lots of ways of cooling a home.
07:17I'm sure a heat pump could work for some people.
07:19There are lots of situations in which heat pumps don't work,
07:22which I'm sure you've covered on the show lots of times.
07:23Flats, for example, very ineffective.
07:25Anywhere with copper wiring, there are problems with heat pumps.
07:28But I think we are vilifying air conditioning
07:30without any recourse to any science that says that people cooling their homes
07:34for a couple of weeks a year in order to stay healthy and comfortable
07:38and be able to sleep and not get unwell is bad for the planet.
07:41I don't think it's going to make the blindest bit of difference.
07:47And I agree with it, honestly, right?
07:49Uh, the UK, it's like this bit, like this much of the entire world population.
07:55So them not using AC, I don't think changes really anything.
07:59Uh, plus, uh, over here in the US, we're going to definitely use our AC.
08:04You understand me?
08:05Um, I don't care what they doing in the UK.
08:08Y'all can kick rocks telling me to turn off the AC.
08:11Okay, come turn it off.
08:15You know, so, uh, yeah, man, crazy, crazy stuff.
08:20This is just,
08:24this is absolutely wild.
08:25You know, obviously living in America, you just got to think that
08:30everybody has AC, you know, this, this is just normal.
08:34But, uh, goes to show once again, how amazing America truly is, right?
08:39And when it comes to greeny stuff, apparently you're not meant to have an air conditioner
08:45unless it's the last resort. You're certainly not meant to use it unless it's the last resort.
08:51And there are literally inspectors going around in England, telling people that they have to take
08:58their air cons off of their homes because they're illegal and that they should have ceiling fans
09:04instead. I know they're in a heat wave and they can't have air cons.
09:07So, this is from the Telegraph. Cop below to this.
09:10They report that, uh, in one string of cases that was uncovered by the Telegraph,
09:15a resident living in North London was forced to permanently remove two air con units from the
09:20back of their home.
09:21Planning inspectors working for Camden council said there was quote,
09:25no justification for the air con units and that they failed to comply with the local authority.
09:30So called cooling hierarchy. Now this cooling hierarchy, by the way,
09:37is that you have to use every other possible thing before you get the air con.
09:41So in an appeal, the resident was told to open the windows and balcony doors of their first floor flat
09:48to ventilate the property quote, by natural means.
09:51They then said they were concerned about the security, but that was dismissed and the inspectors
09:56said the risk was not as great as those associated with ground floor windows and that the windows
10:03could be shut at night. And the planning document said that the main issue quote unquote of concern
10:08for inspectors was whether quote, the need for active cooling is justified with particular regard
10:15to local policies on energy. And the Telegraph also has that another resident was ordered to remove
10:21three air con units from their property. Despite complying with all planning requirements,
10:26Camden council planning inspectors made particular note of the quote, absence of ceiling fans in their
10:34home, even though it was not listed as a requirement. So under these greeny planning rules in the UK,
10:42they're now saying that you've got to have either your windows open or ceiling fans before you can even
10:47consider putting an air conditioner on your home. And if you do have one, you better only turn it on
10:53when it's really darn hot and you've done everything else. What? Is this real life? They're going,
10:59they're going around telling people either before or during a heat wave, take your air conditioners off
11:05your property. What? Sorry. Yeah. That's also the craziest part about this entire situation.
11:12They're experiencing a heat wave. It's over a hundred degrees and they're like, nope, can't use your AC.
11:21And don't think you're just about to get in your car and just sit in AC. Those tires better be
11:27rolling
11:27or else. Bro, these folks, man, just going around to people's homes and inspecting them,
11:38making sure that they like, come on, man, that is just ridiculous. Talk about being a dictator,
11:44right? Trump's a dictator. Trump's a dictator. But the leftists in the UK are literally going
11:51house to house, making sure people aren't blasting their AC. Jeez Louise. Crazy, crazy stuff. I also
11:59learned, uh, also came across this, which is quite interesting as well. Check this out.
12:04Just a reminder, more Europeans die every year from heat related illness than Americans do from gun
12:11violence. That's a real fact. You can look it up. So don't let any of these Europeans tell you that
12:16they can't install AC in, in their buildings, right? They they've installed plumbing before
12:21they've installed electricity. They can install air conditioning, but their ignorance doesn't let
12:26them. And so they have more people that die from heat than gun violence. Make it make sense.
12:31Yeah. Heat stroke is a real thing. It's a real thing. Um, and it's gotta be horrible trying to sleep
12:39in that. You know, I like to be cold when I go to sleep with the fan on. Okay.
12:48But if the room is a hundred degrees and you got a fan on, they ain't really doing a whole
12:52lot for
12:53you. You just blowing hot air. Oh man. Uh, we cannot let these far leftist Democrats take over. We,
13:05we, we gotta show up in the midterms and then we gotta, uh, show up in 2028 as well. We
13:10cannot let
13:11these folks win. I'm keeping the AC. All right. Are you y'all let me know in the comment section
13:17below? Stay safe out there. Peace and love. I'm out.
