00:00Burt, what did you make of the hard-hitting New York Times piece
00:03on the Diana Rossini situation?
00:06I didn't think there was much new in it.
00:07No.
00:07Like, I don't know.
00:09The one thing that kind of jumped out at me was
00:13them putting her on the record with the text messages.
00:21Maybe the way that people who cover sports do their jobs
00:26is a lot different.
00:28But I would never do what they did there.
00:31I always say to the people I cover,
00:34like, if you're on the record with me, you'll know it.
00:37And I just think that's part of being a...
00:42You mean the text that she sent to the higher-ups?
00:45Yeah, like, when she thinks they're negotiating,
00:46like, whether or not she's going to talk,
00:48and it's like, ah, but that was on the record.
00:50It's like, I don't know.
00:52I thought that was kind of cheap.
00:54That should never be ambiguous.
00:55That should be...
00:56No, it shouldn't.
00:57And, like, again, like, I've said this to people.
01:00Like, I almost get offended when I'm in the...
01:03When I have these conversations with people,
01:06like, I want you, as somebody that I cover,
01:09to be able to talk to me like I'm a normal human being.
01:13And if you constantly think you're on the record with me,
01:15you will not be able to do that,
01:17which is going to hamper my ability to do my job at a high level.
01:22So, like...
01:23So it happens a lot.
01:24And I think a part of it is just be a decent human being
01:30and don't play these games of gotcha.
01:32And if there's a recorder on the table,
01:35if I'm talking to you and there is a recorder on the table
01:39and it is running, you're going to know you're on the record.
01:42If we're, like, standing on the side of a practice field
01:46and I'm just...
01:47And I have my hands in my pockets and, like, I'm just...
01:51Then I want you to be able to talk freely to me
01:55so I'm not going to...
01:56I'm not all of a sudden going to quote something you said to me from there
01:59because then my trust with...
02:01The level of trust I have with you is going to be gone.
02:04And so I can't imagine in other...
02:08I mean, look, like, I've been, you know, covering the NFL for over 20 years now.
02:13I can't imagine anybody in any arena of journalism
02:16would be able to do their job at a high level
02:19when they're covering people with any level of power
02:24if they can't establish that trust with them
02:28that you...
02:29They can talk to you like you're a normal human being.
02:34And, like, that was...
02:36I thought that was weird.
02:37And it just kind of felt to me a little bit like,
02:41man, you got nothing.
02:42Mm-hmm.
