00:00All right, so Twitter is down for us here at the station,
00:04but we do have some pretty major breaking news.
00:09Uh-oh.
00:11University of Michigan coach Dusty May has agreed to become
00:14the new head coach of the Dallas Mavericks,
00:19according to Shams Sharania.
00:23Sources tell me Adam Schefter and Pete Thamel,
00:27major college-to-pro jump for the 2026 NCAA championship coach
00:31and a swing for the Mavericks.
00:34Wow.
00:35Anything on your phone?
00:38No, look, I mean, I found a link to this story,
00:43so I'm assuming, and it appears to be Shams' account,
00:48that is a major blow to University of Michigan athletics,
00:53and basketball in particular,
00:54and not good for Ward-Manual.
00:57So that's two years, two fantastic years for Dusty May.
01:04Yep.
01:04And gone.
01:05National championship.
01:07It's, uh, yeah, that would suck.
01:10Look, I'm trying to take this in as a Spartan fan.
01:15Would suck.
01:16It does suck.
01:17As a Spartan fan, I think it's the best news ever,
01:20but if this happened at Michigan State,
01:22I'd be devastated by it, right?
01:23I mean, you think you've got things going.
01:25You've got the younger coach.
01:26You've won a national championship.
01:28You've got recruiting going.
01:30You work the portal better than anybody else has,
01:35and this happens.
01:38That's devastating for Michigan.
01:39I want to, uh, it, what's going to happen is people are just going to blast Ward.
01:46They're going to blast Ward-Manual.
01:48Why?
01:49Because he didn't get him locked up.
01:52Hard to get a guy locked up if he's got his eye on the next step.
01:55I understand that.
01:56And I mean, I don't even want to defend Ward-Manual.
01:58I'm not a fan.
01:59No, like I, and Ward with the, with the Harbaugh thing,
02:03I didn't blame Ward.
02:04I think Harbaugh wanted to leave, and I, I don't think that relationship was going to last.
02:10I think it's kind of typical with Harbaugh.
02:12He goes to places, he wins, he wears out his welcome, he moves on.
02:17But in this case, you know, did Ward do anything wrong?
02:22I will be interested to do some digging and find out why a contract never got signed.
02:30Because they had one of the best young coaches in the game.
02:35He had quickly adapted to the new world of college basketball and built an absolute powerhouse team.
02:43And Indiana came after him last year, and they signed him to a contract then.
02:50But apparently, uh, whatever Dallas brought to the table was too much for Dusty to say no.
02:59And they didn't get a deal done.
03:02If one was on the table or not, I was, I was told that there was going to be a
03:07new contract.
03:09If you're Dusty May, you know, you're in this profession for a reason.
03:13You want to reach the top.
03:14Perhaps some people don't want to go pro.
03:16Some people want to be in the pros.
03:17I want to, want to be an NBA coach.
03:20I imagine when you win a national championship at the college level, that maybe that changes
03:26what your aspirations could be.
03:28Cause you've conquered that mountaintop.
03:30You're still young.
03:31How old is he?
03:32Uh, Dusty's in his, I was going to say he's in his 40s, right?
03:36So you're that young.
03:38You've just won a national championship.
03:40Go ahead, man.
03:41Ride the lightning.
03:42Go for it.
03:43Well, you know, it used to be, um, and I'm texting people right now.
03:48It used to be that you didn't want, you go to the pros because you didn't have to deal
03:54with recruiting.
03:55Like recruiting was such a monster part of the job, but in the new NIL world, it felt
04:00like recruitments were fast and furious and there was less about building relationships
04:04and more about just offering contracts.
04:06And I think Dusty himself said, I used to spend years working on recruits.
04:12Now everything happens in a smaller window and much faster.
04:16It's actually easier, but then there's also the money.
04:19Like there's possible that Dallas came at him with money that.
04:22Well, I imagine it probably did.
04:24Adam Schefter reports that he says, uh, Dusty made led Michigan to a 64 and 13 record over
04:29two seasons there in his previous job.
04:31He led FAU to back-to-back NCAA tournaments, including the 2023 final four.
04:36He'd ruled out other college jobs this off season, but the NBA has always been intriguing
04:42to me.
04:43I think it's also interesting.
04:44That's Adam Schefter's reporting on a basketball story.
04:49Yeah.
04:49But I mean, the thing is obviously Dusty was doing very well, you know, in, in the college,
04:54you know, the new college landscape, right?
04:56Doug.
04:56Yep.
04:56And yeah, when you're that young, maybe you have aspirations of being in the NBA, but my
05:00guess is also is the Mavericks went ultra aggressive and getting Dusty May.
05:05I mean, they have a new GM right now.
05:07They got Cooper flag, you know, they, they got some young pieces over there and that's
05:11enticing.
05:11And then I heard that, I think I read that they actually wanted John Shire as well.
05:15Like, and if he turned them down, they went right after the next guy, the next young,
05:19great college coach.
05:20And that's Dusty May.
05:21And I bet you they were ultra aggressive and taking part that maybe, you know, he had his
05:24eye on the NBA done deal.
05:26It's not really surprising.
05:27I think it's a surprising, like it happened right now.
05:30Yeah.
05:30I mean, it's not a shock that Dusty May went to the NBA for me in general.
05:33If you just told me that, right?
05:34Like last month, he'll be an NBA coach one day.
05:37I'm like, yeah, I can see that.
05:38I just didn't know it was going to be like today.
05:40You can't force somebody.
05:42Yeah.
05:42Right.
05:43Huh?
05:44We're all kind of on Giannis and Dylan Larkin.
05:48Right now?
05:49Yeah.
05:49Tigers.
05:49What just happened?
05:51I just, Dusty May just, just got hired away from Michigan.
05:53He's going to coach the Dallas Mavericks.
05:55What I just looked down at some of the responses coming in.
05:59Look, dude, one Michigan, a national championship, Michigan fans, you might be a little hurt right
06:04now, but some of what I've seen here, he did it and he did it in, in a quick period
06:12of time.
06:13And I got to give him a, you got to give him a ton of credit and you should be
06:16grateful
06:17for that.
06:18There's a, there is some hostility coming in.
06:20I guess you could expect that, but, um, you know, I want to hear, you can't make a guy
06:25sign a contract.
06:26He doesn't want to sign.
06:27And the question is, was Michigan aggressive in trying to keep how aggressive was Michigan
06:32trying to make sure that he would not leave this off season?
06:36Do you, do you know what his salary was?
06:39Uh, it was pretty good.
06:40Cause he'd already gotten one raise when Indiana came after him.
06:43Right.
06:44Yeah.
06:45Uh, but, but, but I have to look up.
06:47Is he approaching like the $8 million range, something like that?
06:50Give me a second here.
06:53Uh, he had a five year contract for 25.5 million.
06:58Third highest paid coach in the big 10 was where he stood according to a quick Google search.
07:04Well, I'm going to guess he's getting paid a lot more than I'm going to guess.
07:07He's getting paid a lot more than that too.
07:09Two, four, eight, five, three, nine, 97, 97.
07:11It's Carson Anderson reacting to the breaking news.
07:15Dusty may to the Dallas Mavericks.
07:17It is Carson Anderson on 97 one.
