No more stuck 3D printed threads!

In this tutorial, you'll see how threaded components were tested using a practical 3D printed bottle example. Avoid threads that are too tight or too loose and improve the success rate of your functional 3D prints. The design was made with FreeCAD.

00:00In this video you learn how to convert threaded CAD models into a working 3D print.
00:08Here you see the threaded bottle model which was designed in FreeCAD 1.1.
00:13To export it to an STL file for 3D printing, select both bodies with the control key.
00:19Then go to File, select Export and save it as an STL file.
00:23Do the same with the threaded CAD model.
00:28Load the bottle model in the slicer.
00:34Click on the scale button and scale it down to 50%.
00:41Leave the quality at a 0.20mm layer height and click on Preview.
00:50You see there are holes around the thread, so the model has to be changed a little.
00:58In FreeCAD, open the sketch where the circular cut is.
01:02Then change the diameter of the circle and make it smaller, so more material will be left.
01:10Export the whole model again to an STL file.
01:18In the slicer, click on Objects.
01:21Right click on the STL model and select Reload from disk.
01:26And you see the model was updated.
01:28Preview the model again and you'll see it looks good now.
01:35Let's export the G-code for printing.
01:37The bottle was printed in transparent PLA.
01:42So, let's park the Π·Π°ΠΊΠΎΠ½.
02:06For more information, click on the on-campus file.
02:06If you liked it, click on the video.
02:08Click on the icon, click on the icon, click on the icon.
02:10Use the Auto Orient button to rotate the model into the correct position, then scale the model to 50%, the
02:17same as the bottle model.
02:18Click on Preview.
02:21Everything looks right.
02:24Now export it for printing.
02:26Let's push the threads together.
02:28The thread of the cap is too tight.
02:41To fix this, double click on the threaded hole in FreeCAD.
02:46And check the Custom Clearance box.
02:53Enter a clearance of 1.2mm to make the thread wider.
03:00Click on OK to make it wider.
03:04Now export the model and overwrite the existing STL file.
03:11In the slicer, click on Objects.
03:14Right click on the model and select Reload from disk.
03:18You see the thread became wider.
03:20Preview the model and export it for printing.
03:23Please subscribe if you like it, thanks.
03:28And now the cap fits very well.
03:31So this is how you can export and handle two threaded models that need to fit together.
03:50The cap was printed with a print profile of 0.12mm to improve the thread quality.
04:00The bottle thread is a bit rougher, but it's good enough to make the cap fit.
04:04And when there's a bottle, there's water.
04:06Just for fun.
04:09Let's put the cap on the bottle and turn it upside down.
04:26As expected, it will leak a bit.
