00:27calls it unprecedented. So what exactly did they find and why are experts so excited?
00:40The discovery was made near Cotepec in the Mexican state of Veracruz. Archaeologists from the National
00:47Institute of Anthropology and History uncovered the remains of an ancient stone structure. At first
00:54glance, the ruins appear modest. But experts immediately noticed architectural features
01:00unlike anything previously documented in the region. And beside the structure,
01:05sat another remarkable discovery. A carved stone monument with features linked to the Maya world.
01:18This culture contains iconographic elements associated with the Maya civilization.
01:23That immediately raised questions. Because Veracruz lies outside the traditional Maya heartland.
01:30Could ideas have traveled farther than historians once believed? Were ancient cultures more connected
01:36than we realized? Or is there another explanation entirely?
01:41What can I say? Well, this is a unique approach. It does not have antecedents.
01:46It is, on the one hand, the structure, which is an architecture that has its particular
01:51architecture. And, on the other hand, the association that there is with that structure,
01:55which is a stone, which is a sculpture with very important elements of iconography.

02:06Researchers believe the sculpture depicts two figures. Both appear to be asking for something
02:12or receiving something. Archaeologists believe the scene may involve a sacred liquid, possibly water.
02:19And in ancient Mesoamerican cultures, water represented life, fertility and divine power.
02:53The mysteries do not stop with the sculpture. Archaeologists discovered something unusual in the construction materials themselves.
03:01Some stones appear very different from the others. And that may reveal another layer of meaning.
03:07The materials constructively are of laca, but they have a special detail where they use a black stone,
03:17which probably received treatment for certain characteristics of this stone.
03:26So, this element, immersed in architecture, is used to highlight certain figures.
03:44That means, the building itself may have carried symbolic meaning.
03:48The choice of materials, the placement of stones, the highlighted figures,
03:53all of it may have been designed to communicate religious or ceremonial ideas.
03:58And what archaeologists have uncovered may represent only a small portion of the site.
04:10The discovery has now reached the highest levels of garment.
04:14Mexico's president says funding will be made available for future research and restoration.
04:19That means, archaeologists may soon return to the site.
04:22And the next discoveries could be even bigger.
04:36Thousands of archaeological sites across Mexico remain unexplored.
04:41Many still lie beneath forests, farmland and modern communities.
