00:06hello there folks and a very warm welcome back to what's for tea and our wee archive recipe for
00:13this week and i hope that i find you very well and this one is from many years ago so
00:18it's very
00:19grainy and it's very close up but it's a lovely recipe so please do give this one a go and
00:25as
00:25usual i hope that i find you very well indeed so i'm just going to pass you over to me
00:30and let's see
00:31how this one is put together and i'll catch up with you just at the end you know it's just
00:36one of those
00:36soups and it's quite thick guys but if you don't like it quite so thick just go ahead and half
00:42the
00:42amount of lentils that i'm using but this is what else you're going to need two liters of ham stock
00:47two carrots peeled and sliced two large potatoes peeled and chopped one large onion peeled and
00:53chopped nine ounces of red lentils five or six bay leafs one small turnip peeled and chopped and a
01:00good tablespoon of sea salt and also a tablespoon of black pepper so that's it guys easy peasy so
01:07let's go over to the cooker so the first thing you want to do guys is get some oil into
01:12the bottom of
01:12your pan and bring it up to medium heat and once it's warm just throw your potatoes in
01:20and to that you want to add your carrots
01:26and then your turnip and finally your onions
01:33you want to give these about 10 or 15 minutes but just with a lid on to soften up
01:44once they've had about 15 minutes you just go ahead and add in your lentils
01:49now you don't have to wash your lentils some people do but i've never bothered washing lentils
01:54but it's up to you just give them a good stir through
02:00and then just add in your stock
02:06pop in your bay leafs and give it another stir but just try not to break them up because you
02:12obviously you're going to be removing these at the end and you don't want to be picking
02:16wee bits of bay leafs out of your your soup so just try and keep them whole so you want
02:21to give
02:21this about 40 just throw in your salt and pepper you want to give this about 40 minutes guys you're
02:27really just softening all your veg up once your potatoes are soft you know it's ready
02:32so that that usually takes anything between half an hour to 40 minutes
02:38so just keep it in the summer and go back every now and again and just give it a stir
02:42through
02:46and it goes lovely and thick
02:52like i say guys just keep going back and checking and once your potatoes are soft
02:55that's you ready to serve
03:00so easy but it's an absolute classic
03:05it smells absolutely fab
03:07it's got a lovely hammy smell
03:09well it would do
03:11it's made of a ham stock
03:14so that's it guys that's your soup ready
03:16this is taking about 35 minutes and it's done
03:20and it's so so thick and tasty you know it's a meal in its own right it's so filling
03:25so just pop it out into a bowl put a generous
03:30shake of black pepper in the top serve that with some crusty bread
03:34and you're good to go
03:36so do let me know what you thought of that one like i said it's a very old recipe so
03:40it is
03:41quite close in and quite grainy but honestly it makes such a lovely soup and very popular here
03:47lentil and potato soup i think everybody's mother makes it a different way so it will probably be
03:53slightly different from recipe to recipe but the overall flavor oh it's just wonderful do give it a go
