At Fortune Brainstorm Tech, Anthropic Head of Claude Code Boris Cherny shared the three qualities he looks for when hiring: generalists, low ego, and people willing to change their minds when the data proves them wrong.

“[If] I talked to a customer and they told me that I'm wrong, I’m probably wrong, and I should probably throw out that idea and try something else,” Cherny said.

00:00Number one, we like generalists because they have context across more than just engineering.
00:03So we love people that have, you know, context across like engineering and design,
00:07engineering and product, data science and design.
00:09The second one is low ego. Ego just gets in the way of stuff.
00:12You want to be okay and safe shipping an idea that might turn out to be bad.
00:17It's not your fault. It's okay to be wrong.
00:19And the third thing is we love empiricists.
00:21So people that are learning from the data and that are anchored to reality.
00:25Like, I have a brilliant idea, but then I go talk to a customer
00:28and they told me that I'm wrong.
00:30I'm probably wrong and I should probably throw out that idea and try something else.
00:34And that's okay.
