00:00A big night of primary results and a mixed report card for President Trump.
00:05In Georgia, his Senate pick wins big, but his choice for governor comes up short.
00:10Plus, a business jet crashes onto a Texas highway and people driving by don't run away.
00:16They run toward the flames to help pull out survivors.
00:20And a $14 million makeover and the same old problem.
00:24Why the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is already turning green.
00:30The stories that matter, clear and credible, from across the country to around the world.
00:36These are your unbiased updates from Straight Arrow.
00:42Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelli.
00:44This morning, President Trump can claim a big win in Georgia after the candidate he backed for U.S. Senate
00:49cruised to victory in Tuesday's Republican primary.
00:53Congressman Mike Collins defeated former football coach Derek Dooley, the candidate backed by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp.
01:00The result sets up one of the marquee Senate races of the midterms, with Collins now turning his attention to
01:05Democratic Senator John Ossoff in November.
01:08Y'all know what the mission is, is to put a Republican in that seat and get rid of that
01:13John Ossoff in November.
01:15Return this seat to the people of Georgia.
01:18But Georgia voters did not follow Trump's lead everywhere.
01:22In the race to succeed Kemp, billionaire businessman Rick Jackson defeated Trump-backed Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones in the Republican
01:29runoff.
01:30Jackson spent more than $100 million of his own money on the campaign and will now face former Atlanta Mayor
01:36Keisha Lance Bottoms.
01:37Meanwhile, in Alabama, Trump-backed Congressman Barry Moore won the Republican Senate runoff to replace Tommy Tuberville, who's running for
01:45governor.
01:46In Oklahoma, Congressman Kevin Hearn won the GOP Senate primary, putting him on track to succeed Mark Wayne Mullen after
01:54his move to the Department of Homeland Security earlier this year.
01:57In California, the special election to fill embattled Congressman Eric Swalwell's seat will go to a runoff.
02:04Senator Ayesha Wahab is leading the pack with more than 40 percent of the vote.
02:09It is not yet clear who she'll face in the runoff.
02:12President Trump is turning up the pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the U.S. works to lock
02:19in a peace deal with Iran.
02:21At the G7 summit in France, Trump said he's not happy with Israel's actions in Lebanon and said Netanyahu needs
02:28to be, quote, more responsible.
02:30The president argues the conflict with Hezbollah is making it harder to finish a U.S.-backed agreement with Iran, which
02:37could be signed as early as Friday in Switzerland.
02:40The remarks indicate a rare public rebuke of Netanyahu from a president he once called the greatest friend Israel ever
02:48had in the White House.
02:49Meanwhile, a new point of tension is emerging.
02:52Iran's foreign minister says any Israeli military presence in southern Lebanon would violate the proposed deal.
02:58But Israel has already said its troops are staying, with its national security minister saying the agreement does not bind
03:05Israel.
03:06Back in this country, wait till you see this.
03:09Dramatic video out of Texas this morning after a business jet crashed onto a highway in Laredo.
03:14The plane went down just after 10 p.m. on Loop 20, clipping a light pole and striking a vehicle
03:20before erupting into flames right there.
03:22Local reports say witnesses watched the plane fall from the sky already on fire.
03:27As first responders arrived, bystanders jumped in to help, working to break through the aircraft's windshield to reach people trapped
03:35inside.
03:35The flight was headed from Los Cabos, Mexico, to Austin when it crashed.
03:40Authorities say one person was killed, five others injured.
03:43Investigators have not said whether the person who died was on board the plane or on the ground.
03:48The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and there's still no word this morning on the condition of the
03:54survivors.
03:54A surprise twist in Washington this morning.
03:58President Trump has pulled the plug on a Senate confirmation hearing for his pick to lead the nation's intelligence agencies.
04:05And he's tying the move to a fight over surveillance powers and election law.
04:10Trump announced on Truth Social that he's postponing a confirmation hearing for Jay Clayton, his nominee to serve as director
04:17of national intelligence.
04:18Instead, Bill Pulte will remain acting DNI for now.
04:22The president accused Democrats of backing away from a deal to support reauthorization of a key foreign surveillance program known
04:30as FISA after Republicans moved to replace Pulte.
04:33Trump also said he doesn't want to remove Clayton from his current job as U.S. attorney in Manhattan until
04:39his replacement is confirmed.
04:41Adding another twist, the president says he will not support a FISA extension unless Congress also passes the Save America
04:49Act, also called the Save Act.
04:51A Republican-backed bill that would require proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.
04:57Clayton's hearing had been scheduled for today.
05:00There's no word yet on when it will be rescheduled.
05:03The Trump administration is taking its biggest step yet toward breaking up the Department of Education.
05:09The administration announced Tuesday that it's moving two of the department's most significant responsibilities elsewhere in the federal government.
05:17Oversight of special education programs will shift to the Department of Health and Human Services.
05:23Our responsibility for investigating discrimination complaints in schools will move to the Justice Department.
05:29Education Secretary Linda McMahon says the changes will improve efficiency and align those programs with the agencies best equipped to
05:36handle them.
05:37The move affects offices responsible for enforcing civil rights laws in schools and overseeing roughly $15 billion a year in
05:45funding for students with disabilities.
05:47Critics say the changes could make it harder for families to navigate the system and weaken oversight of students' rights.
05:54The Trump administration insists services won't change, but legal challenges are expected as the president continues his push to dismantle
06:02the Education Department without formally eliminating it.
06:05President Trump wanted the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool looking its best in time for America's 250th birthday celebration.
06:14The problem? Just days after a multi-million dollar makeover, the water has turned green.
06:20Workers were back in the water this week trying to get a handle on an algae bloom that appeared less
06:25than two weeks after the Reflecting Pool reopened.
06:28The Trump administration spent more than $14 million on the project, fixing leaks, installing a new filtration system, even painting
06:36the bottom what the president called American Flag Blue.
06:40We made the surface as good as it can be, and we're now covering it with the most beautiful blue,
06:47very thick, you think of it as a very sophisticated form of rubber.
06:52No leaks, no problems, and it's beautiful. It's called American Flag Blue. That was the color we chose.
06:59But now, instead of crystal clear reflections, visitors are seeing patches of green algae spreading across the water.
07:06To fight it, crews have been vacuuming the pool, running a high-tech filtration system, and adding hydrogen peroxide to
07:14the water.
07:15I'm glad they're trying, but honestly, I don't think you can fight Mother Nature.
07:21And the nature of this pool, anytime you have an environment that big, that's like cleaning a lake or something
07:27else.
07:28As long as it doesn't stink, I'm okay.
07:31And as long as I can enjoy it and get close, I'm fine with it and happy about it.
07:37Experts say the shallow, warm water creates ideal conditions for algae, and warn this may be more of an ongoing
07:44maintenance challenge than a one-time fix.
07:47Some visitors are not impressed.
07:49Absolutely. It was a 100% waste of funds.
07:53I do, however, see that the National Park Service is getting some work today clearing out the algae.
08:00To be fair, algae has plagued the reflecting pool for decades, including after a $34 million renovation during the Obama
08:08administration.
08:09The question now is whether this latest high-tech fix can succeed where others have struggled.
08:15Finally this morning, World Cup fans in Kansas City got quite a show Tuesday night.
08:21Lionel Messi reminded everyone why he's the greatest to ever play the game.
08:25The Argentina star scored all three goals in a 3-0 win over Algeria, giving the defending World Cup champions
08:32a strong start to their title defense.
08:35The hat-trick also put Messi in some elite company.
08:38His three goals gave him 16 for his World Cup career, tying Miroslav Klose of Germany for the most in
08:45tournament history.
08:46France and Norway also picked up wins on Tuesday.
08:49Meanwhile, the U.S. men's national team is back in action on Friday when it takes on Australia in Seattle.
08:55So, the World Cup is gaining steam.
08:57Lots of excitement there.
08:59A busy day on the books.
09:00Here's what we're tracking.
09:01This morning, President Trump will hold a press conference from the G7 summit in France before heading back to Washington.
09:07That same hour, on Long Island, serial killer Rex Heuerman is set to be sentenced after admitting to murdering eight
09:14women.
09:15At 2.30, newly minted Fed chair Kevin Warsh delivers his first post-meeting news conference
09:21and announces the central bank's latest rate decision.
