00:01President Trump claims he's closed one war. Now he's trying to end another.
00:05At the G7, he shifts his focus from Iran to Ukraine.
00:09Plus, a routine test flight ends in disaster.
00:12A B-52 crashes moments after takeoff in California, killing all eight people on board.
00:18And they played the match, then we're told to leave.
00:21Why Iran's World Cup team says it was ordered out of the United States just hours after its tournament opener.
00:30The stories that matter, clear and credible, from across the country to around the world.
00:36These are your unbiased updates from Straight Arrow.
00:42Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelli.
00:44President Trump is at the G7 summit this morning in France with two major foreign policy tests front and center.
00:51A fragile peace deal with Iran and his push to end the war in Ukraine.
00:56Trump is meeting with fellow G7 leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after announcing what he says is a deal
01:03to end the conflict with Iran, with a formal signing set for Friday in Switzerland.
01:08I'm very happy to say, very signed, the deal's all signed, and the strait is already partially opened.
01:18So now that this is finished, we're going to be focusing on that, see if we can get that one
01:24done.
01:2425,000 people a month are dying, mostly soldiers, and that shouldn't happen.
01:30The summit opens as Britain unveils a new round of sanctions targeting Russia's so-called shadow fleet, the network of
01:38ships used to keep oil moving around Western restrictions.
01:41And while Trump is declaring victory on Iran, Tehran is signaling there's still work to be done.
01:46Iran's foreign minister says talks with the U.S. will move forward in two phases, with the first focus on
01:53ending the conflict, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, accessing frozen funds, and reconstruction.
01:59Only after that, he says, will negotiators tackle the bigger questions of Iran's nuclear program and sanctions relief.
02:07But those comments don't fully line up with what Trump has been saying.
02:10The president has repeatedly said the Strait of Hormuz is fully open, and that Iran has already agreed to never
02:17develop a nuclear weapon.
02:19Even as Tehran suggests, those issues remain part of future negotiations.
02:24Back in the U.S., an investigation is now underway after a catastrophe at one of the military's most important
02:31air bases.
02:32Eight people are dead after a B-52 bomber crashed just moments after takeoff in Southern California.
02:38The Air Force says the B-52 Stratofortress went down Monday morning at Edwards Air Force Base while supporting a
02:46radar modernization test.
02:47Emergency crews rushed to the scene as flames and thick black smoke engulfed the crash site.
02:54It took off, and immediately after takeoff, crashed and burst into flames.
03:00After reviewing the footage of the crash, it was deemed that this was an unrecoverable crash and unsurvivable.
03:08The eight people on board included military personnel, government civilians, and contractors working on a test mission.
03:16Sadly, as we mentioned, all are dead.
03:18The crash left a massive burn scar on the runway and sent a thick column of black smoke into the
03:24desert sky.
03:25Investigators are now trying to determine what brought down one of the Air Force's most recognizable aircraft,
03:31a bomber that first entered service more than 70 years ago and remains a key part of the U.S.
03:37military fleet.
03:39California Governor Gavin Newsom says the Trump administration is using the Justice Department to target him, and now his wife.
03:47In a video posted Monday, Newsom revealed that federal investigators have been contacting friends,
03:53former employees, and organizations tied to both him and Jennifer Seibel Newsom.
03:57The governor says investigators have been digging through years of records and conducting interviews
04:02as part of what he calls a politically motivated fishing expedition.
04:07Donald Trump isn't just coming after me because of my mean tweets.
04:11He's coming after me because I'm considering running for president,
04:15because he hates that I've consistently called him out over and over again for his lies and deceit.
04:22If they can't intimidate me, they'll go after the mother of our children.
04:27Donald Trump picked the wrong target.
04:30We have nothing to hide.
04:33Newsom is widely viewed as a possible Democratic presidential candidate in 2028
04:39and has become one of Trump's most outspoken critics.
04:42The Justice Department declined to comment publicly.
04:45Sources familiar with the matter tell CNN and CBS
04:48there is no direct criminal investigation of Gavin Newsom himself.
04:52But federal probes are underway involving people connected to the governor,
04:57including questions surrounding his wife and possible tax-related issues.
05:01Newsom's office says the scrutiny expanded in recent weeks
05:05and points to a growing list of Trump critics who have faced federal investigations,
05:10including former FBI Director James Comey,
05:12former Fed Chair Jerome Powell,
05:14former National Security Advisor John Bolton,
05:16and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
05:19If you're a Dan Sullivan running for U.S. Senate in Alaska,
05:24elections officials have some bad news.
05:26They're only letting one of you on the ballot.
05:29State elections overseers have ruled that a Republican challenger
05:33who shares the exact same first and last name as Alaska's sitting senator
05:38cannot appear on the primary ballot,
05:40calling the candidacy a deliberate effort to confuse voters.
05:44According to the state's elections director,
05:47the challenger tried to run simply as Dan Sullivan,
05:50adopted a campaign style similar to the incumbents,
05:53and filed paperwork that officials say was designed to make voters think the two candidates
05:57were the same person.
05:59The challenger insists he's simply running under his legal name
06:03and says the state is protecting an incumbent from competition.
06:06But for now, elections officials are not buying it.
06:09The ruling removes the candidate from one of the country's most closely watched Senate races,
06:14though he still has 30 days to appeal.
06:16Right now, Republicans have a 53 to 47 majority in the Senate
06:20and can only afford to lose three seats in the upcoming midterms,
06:24making Alaska a key race.
06:27Iran's World Cup coach says his team was forced to leave the United States
06:32just hours after opening the tournament with a draw against New Zealand.
06:36Head coach Amir Galanoa says players were told to return to their training base in Tijuana
06:41immediately after Monday's match.
06:44Galanoa said the team had expected to spend the night in Los Angeles
06:47before heading back to Mexico, but those plans changed after the game.
06:52The coach also said a trip that normally takes just a few hours
06:55stretched to more than five hours because of security checks.
06:59He described the situation as, quote,
07:01oppression, though he didn't say who ordered the team to leave or why.
07:04Iran and New Zealand finished in a 2-2 draw,
07:08part of an unusual day at the World Cup that saw all four matches and tied.
07:13Finally this morning, every World Cup seems to produce an unlikely star.
07:18This year, it's not a player.
07:20It's not a coach.
07:21It's a duck.
07:23Meet Merlin.
07:24He's a duck roaming the streets of Mexico City
07:27in a Mexico national team jersey complete with matching socks.
07:32Yep, there he is.
07:33He's become an unlikely World Cup celebrity.
07:36Merlin belongs to Carla Gomez, who sells drinks from a street cart.
07:41Every day, Merlin tags along with Gomez and her son Christian,
07:44following them through the city like a feathered shadow.
07:48The family calls him their baby.
07:50Social media has embraced him also,
07:52with videos of Merlin racking up millions of views
07:55and turning him into an unofficial mascot for Mexico's World Cup run.
08:00And with Mexico winning its opening match,
08:03some fans are starting to wonder if Merlin isn't just a mascot,
08:07he's a good luck charm.
08:09Or in some senses, you could say he really is.
08:12Merlin the magician, at least for Mexico, right?
08:15All right, a busy day ahead.
08:17Here's what we're tracking today.
08:18This morning, voters are heading to the polls in Alabama, D.C., Georgia,
08:22Oklahoma, and Virginia, with several local and state races on the ballot.
08:26At 10, the Federal Reserve kicks off a two-day policy meeting.
08:30Investors will be watching for any signals ahead of tomorrow's interest rate decision.
08:35And later, President Trump joins G7 leaders for a series of events in France,
08:40including a concert and cultural program following the day's working sessions.
08:44Before we go today, a quick note that we're really proud of.
