00:01Are we ready? Sir!
00:03I'm sorry, I'm gonna have to ask you to speak up a little.
00:06I can't hear you very well.
00:08Okay, no problem.
00:10What's your first question?
00:11I wanna know more how it started.
00:13Well, it started by accident.
00:17Well, with an accident.
00:22Yes, I'd been injured once too often playing polar.
00:27Do you understand what I'm saying?
00:29Yes, I understand.
00:30Good, good.
00:32And so, age 50, I decided to give up the big love of my life
00:36and look elsewhere for some fun.
00:39Well, let me come on, right?
00:41I'm gonna insist we do that again.
00:43Excuse me?
00:44We're gonna go again.
00:48Again!
00:49You ready?
00:51Yes, yes, yes.
00:53And so, age 50, I decided to give up the big sporting love of my life.
00:58and look for new challenges.
01:01Go on!
01:02Yeah!
01:03Go on!
01:04Which is how I ended up carriage driving.
01:08Go on!
01:10Go on!
01:11Go on!
01:11There you go!
01:12Good!
01:29We've become quite a gang, traveling up and down the country, competition to competition.
01:34It's become something of a second family.
01:37What?
01:43Where?
01:45Well.
01:48Right!
01:49Back in.
02:03Amazing grace, O sweet, O Son,
02:10that saved the wretch like me.
02:16My heart was lost, but now and now,
02:25was blind, but now I see.
02:33O Lord, I love you.
02:48There's a school of progressive medical thought that suggests we bring cancer upon ourselves
02:57as a result of repressed emotion or unresolved psychological trauma.
03:04Then a perfectly angelic five-year-old dies of it, and you realise what utter rubbish that is.
03:14Poor Norton.
03:16Yes.
03:18Why don't you pay him a visit?
03:21He could probably do with some support from his godfather.
03:25Yes.
03:27Yes, right.
03:32What's that look?
03:36I've never seen so many thoughts go on behind someone's eyes.
03:41Gratitude.
03:42Appreciation.
03:44What for?
03:47You make a better person of me.
03:49And you of me.
03:53Isn't that the point of marriage?
04:04Goodnight.
04:05Goodnight.
04:11Goodnight.
04:25Hello?
04:26Hi.
04:29You, um...
04:30You are coming?
04:31Sorry, one of those mornings.
04:32With Aaron.
04:33One minute.
04:34One minute.
04:34One minute.
04:35One minute.
04:35One minute.
04:37One minute away and she apologizes what's actually her yes that was actually her
05:05I
05:26Saw the pictures of you in Italy. Yeah, well you all look so happy
05:31If only you knew it's honestly worse than ever. I'm gonna ask for what to do
06:10Yes
06:10Yes
06:12Which one?
06:15Tall with glasses
06:17I know one Clark Kent
06:21He said his name was Andrew. This is why I call him silly
06:25Andrew Morton
06:26I'm just one of the friendly ones
06:28He's written some nice things about me in the past
06:30Well now he wants to write a whole book about you
06:33What it's really been like marrying into the royal family the truth behind the fairy tale
06:37I said you'd never agree to be involved in something like that
06:40Oh no
06:41So then we arranged to play a game of squash
06:43What?
06:44You saw my racket in the corner of my office and suggested a game
06:47James
06:47Don't worry
06:48I said any further discussion of you was totally off-limits
06:51It's about to be
06:52I'll call you after I've seen him
07:11Hello
07:18That shit
07:38Thank you
07:45Hello
07:53hello oh no what have I done now oh you're here today Norton said you were
07:59coming tomorrow he just left London for meetings with the bank well let me see
08:05if I can reach him oh don't go to any trouble
08:12what can I get you are you hungry oh god no no nothing like that
08:18no I uh I just came by to see how you're coping that's kind and to bring these
08:34daisies well Leonora you mentioned that the memorial they were her favorite
08:41that's so kind of you should we take them to her
08:55Norton thought it was morbid to have her so close but I wanted somewhere I could see
09:02her every day be near to her every day it also means I can never leave here why would you
09:12want to
09:15it's not always easy
09:38you know one of the many many things that attracted me to Lilibet was that the commitment would
09:47necessarily be lifelong to a young man who'd had such an unsettled nomadic childhood the clarity of that
09:57permanence felt so reassuring still does but it brings its problems too because it doesn't take
10:07into account the one thing human beings do the minute they make a commitment to a life together
10:14which is
10:16it's growing separate directions
10:34tell Norton I'll be sure to be in touch soon for a godfatherly chat and as for you there's
10:42there's two things you might consider why not start a charity in Leonora's name yes I'd already had that
10:49idea and you might find yourself a hobby something that has nothing to do with any of this not a
10:55hobby
10:56an escape a passion I'll bear that in mind good
11:02oh speaking of hobbies Norton said that you'd given up polo and developed a thing for carriage driving
11:09I have yes I'm obsessed why
11:20look at that
11:23an old foreign hand
11:25Norton wanted to sell it
11:27can't do that
11:28we've been told it's beyond repair then he thought if you could make use of it
11:31well it may be a bit dusty
11:33oh I think the damage is worse than that
11:35all right a bit cracked in places
11:38Norton was told structurally irreparable
11:41no no no she's a beauty and part of the family heritage
11:48I'll tell you what
11:51why don't we do this
11:54I'll send someone to collect her
11:56we'll clean her up take a look at her
11:58and then we can talk again
12:00we don't need to talk again
12:03this could be a hobby for you
12:05oh no it's really not for me
12:08that was my attitude at first
12:10but then I tried it and
12:13I saw the light
12:22what was it
12:29um
12:34oh
12:35oh
12:35oh
12:36oh
12:36Oh!
12:37Oh!
12:42That's it.
12:43I think I might head off.
12:44Oh, that's it.
12:46That's it.
12:47All right.
12:54Is it for us?
13:04No.
13:21How was it?
13:22Oh, bloody hell.
13:25Very evenly matched.
13:26He moves infuriatingly well for a tall man.
13:29Quick to the tee.
13:30Plenty of nasty little drop shots and boasts.
13:33We played the best of three games.
13:35Pipped him in the third.
13:36I wasn't asking about the squash.
13:38I want to know about the lunch.
13:39Ah, a little Italian place near the squash club.
13:42The Barker, run by a husband and wife.
13:44Not where you had lunch.
13:46Oh, sorry.
13:47What you ate?
13:48Linguini.
13:52Let's start with who paid.
13:53He did.
13:54James.
13:55He's a tabloid journalist.
13:56And he bought lunch because he lost.
13:58And if you are worried about indiscretion, he got nothing from me.
14:01Not a word.
14:01Whereas I got plenty out of him.
14:04Revelation number one.
14:05He's already started writing.
14:07What?
14:07He thinks there's already another book coming out about you that's likely to be a bit of a hatchet job.
14:11Based on sources close to the Prince of Wales.
14:14Oh, God.
14:14Anyway, Morton's view is that his version would at least give you some control.
14:19Like, be sympathetic.
14:21He'd even let you have final approval.
14:23Trust me, I'd love to have a book out there so everyone understands how difficult it's been for me.
14:26I don't want to be responsible for starting a war.
14:29Morton said that you'd never need to meet him.
14:31Ever.
14:32There would be no connection between the two of you that anyone could prove.
14:35It would all be totally deniable.
14:37How'd that even work?
14:38Tape recordings.
14:40You would record your side of the story saying only what you want to say, all in your own words,
14:44and then Morton would write the book from those recordings.
14:49If you and I don't meet, how would he get the recordings?
14:54There would have to be a middleman.
14:57Go between someone who you both trusted.
15:01Someone who thought it was important.
15:05And you would do that?
15:07If you wanted me to.
15:33To get more than you are going to.
15:35That's a bit more than you are going to.
15:35Come on. That'll be all right.
15:36Yeah.
15:42Oh, marvellous.
15:43Marvellous.
15:43You've got the hickory in time.
16:04Let's go.
16:23Let's go.
16:44Let's go.
16:46Let's go.
16:47Let's go.
16:47Let's go.
17:15Let's go.
17:19Let's go.
17:20Now grab here.
17:21The foot here.
17:23The other foot here.
17:32How does it feel?
17:33Fine.
17:35Largely because it's not moving.
17:37Let's go.
17:53You try.
17:55All right.
17:57These two reins control the leaders.
17:59Those are the horses at the front.
18:01And these two, the wheelers.
18:03They control the horses nearest to us.
18:06Feel free to nod or say yes to let me know you're still alive.
18:09Yes.
18:11The trick is to keep these both together.
18:13Put between these two fingers.
18:15There.
18:17Now, these two reins, you have control over all four horses.
18:21To turn left.
18:23Make a loop.
18:24That's it.
18:25Turn to the left.
18:27And to turn right.
18:29Very good.
18:32Off you go.
18:41Here.
18:43Give me a tip.
18:49Where are we going?
19:00Hang on.
19:16Surprising, isn't it?
19:17Yes.
19:18More fun than it looks.
19:20Yes.
19:27The princess is intrigued by the proposition and is willing to consider it.
19:31But as her friend, I want to make sure that this will actually make her life better, not just yours.
19:38You understand why I ask.
19:40She can be a little naive at times and you stand to become a rich man.
19:45I feel protective.
19:47As a royal correspondent, I've had a ringside seat to this marriage for a while.
19:52Most recently her second honeymoon.
19:55And I can't stand to see someone being crushed like this.
19:58Isn't she his being?
19:59I do.
20:00Take this book that's being written.
20:02With the Prince of Wales' cooperation.
20:04Maybe not him directly.
20:06Maybe not him directly.
20:06But his friends for sure.
20:07Who want what they see as the truth about Diana to be told.
20:11Trust me.
20:12It won't be pretty.
20:15I just want to do what's right for her.
20:17She'd like a sister to be.
20:20Can I give you my word?
20:22No one will ever know if she had anything to do with it.
20:26Let's take it one step at a time.
20:28Get a draft written.
20:30The princess can always kill it later if she wants.
20:40Here's a list of questions for her.
20:51Bye, Mummy.
21:14Bye, Mummy.
21:45Bye, Mummy.
21:51I'm sounding incredibly nervous.
21:55Andrew wanted you to start by explaining why you're doing this.
22:04I've tried everything.
22:09I've confronted my husband about his mistress, and I have been dismissed.
22:15I've gone to the Queen, started facing a blank wall, and it finally dawned on me.
22:22And that's how I get my side of the story out there.
22:25People will never understand how it's really been for me.
22:30And I thought about moving abroad with the boys,
22:34but the Crown could take legal custody of any heirs to the throne.
22:40And I'd have the boys taken away from me.
22:47Which is what happened to my mother.
22:51And I couldn't survive that.
23:08Can you tell me something about your childhood?
23:11It was a very unhappy childhood.
23:15My parents were always wrapped up in their own problems.
23:19And my mother was always in tears.
23:22And my father were never telling us what was going on.
23:29And there was always a succession of nannies.
23:32Who I hated.
23:35Prince Charles famously replied, whatever in love means.
23:39And asked if he was in love with you.
23:41How did that make you feel?
23:44Absolutely traumatised.
23:46My self-worth was cut in two.
23:52But I was too scared to ask him what he meant.
23:55And then it was too late.
23:57From the outside, it was the fairytale wedding.
24:00How did it feel on the inside?
24:05Like a bad dream.
24:07The night before the wedding.
24:09I was suddenly overwhelmed.
24:13And I sobbed my eyes out.
24:18And I ate everything inside.
24:21I was sick all over the place.
24:23Which was a big sign.
24:25It all was not well.
24:28I'm walking down the aisle.
24:29I was overwhelmed with love for my husband.
24:32And then I saw Camilla.
24:34In her grey suit.
24:36And her pillbox hat.
24:38And I just felt chill to the bone.
24:42How quickly did things start to go sour?
24:45Well, I started to unravel at the honeymoon.
24:48And at night I was having these dreadful nightmares about Camilla.
24:52When the Queen was there, I always felt second place.
24:55Charles barely looked at me.
24:56I just felt like a fish out of the water.
24:57And I was so thin.
24:58My bones were just sticking out all over me.
25:00When I talked to him about photographers pounding me,
25:03he talked about Camilla.
25:04And I tried to be brave.
25:06Make a speech in Wales.
25:07I got no support.
25:08And I just felt like a lamb to the slaughter.
25:10Did you feel that your husband was committed to the marriage
25:13in the same way that you were?
25:14Well, there was always the other one.
25:18From the word go.
25:21And I couldn't compete.
25:25And I'd overhear him on the phone to her.
25:28And he used a voice I'd never heard in use with me.
25:32Tender.
25:33Caring.
25:34Adoring.
25:38When I was pregnant with Winnie-Maria
25:39threw myself down the stairs at Sandrine.
25:41I went, oh.
25:43I'm not pregnant, don't you?
25:47I'm not pregnant.
25:57I'm not pregnant.
25:58I'm not pregnant with Skoja.
25:58What are you saying?
25:58I'm pregnant.
25:59I'm pregnant!
26:01I'm pregnant.
26:03My friend, I'm pregnant...
26:04I'm pregnant.
26:05I'm pregnant.
26:05I love you.
26:10I need aPS4W.
26:13Andrew's listened to the tapes?
26:14He has. And, um, drafted some follow-up questions.
26:18And what did he think?
26:21I think he was a bit shocked.
26:23He said he had to look up Bulimia, Nervosa, and Kumar and Clarks.
26:27I have to admit, there have been a few surprises for me in all this, too.
26:36I wish you'd have told me before about the...
26:43...the suicide attempts.
26:45I'm so sorry.
26:49Why didn't you call us?
26:59He wants to know if he can speak to any of your friends.
27:02Why?
27:02He said it would help with their deniability.
27:04If he can show he has other sources for all this, then he gives you cover.
27:07He'd ask them the same questions I've asked you,
27:09...and they'll be corroborating witnesses.
27:15All right.
27:20I'll start with Sue.
27:22Who's Sue?
27:23My room therapist.
27:27Felix Lyle.
27:28Felix Lyle.
27:30My astrologer.
27:34Una.
27:35Shanty Toffalo.
27:36Don't tell me she's your Reiki healer.
27:39My acupuncturist.
27:42Um, Stephen Twig, my body barker.
27:47It's like an osteopath.
27:50Right.
27:59Good.
28:00Good.
28:01You're doing really well.
28:04Excellent.
28:10Here we are.
28:14Now, I've had a go at the governing instrument for the charity.
28:21These are the trust deeds, the memorandum, and the articles.
28:26What do you think of a research fellowship?
28:30To study cancer in children.
28:33They were all so good to us at Barthes.
28:36It made such a difference to Leonora's final days.
28:39I think that's a lovely idea.
28:41Getting registration can be a bit of a slog, but, well, I'm on good terms with some of the charity
28:46commissioners.
28:47Let me talk to them.
28:48You know, a long time ago, I lost my favorite sister, Cecile, in an airplane crash.
29:07I learned then what grief was.
29:11True grief.
29:17How it moves through the body.
29:21How it inhabits it.
29:25How it becomes part of your skin.
29:28Your cells.
29:32And it makes a home there.
29:36A permanent home.
29:43But you learn to live with it.
29:47And you will be happy again.
29:50No, never in the same way as before.
29:54But that's the point.
29:57To keep finding new ways.
30:03Yes.
30:14No, never in the same way.
30:16Ok.
30:24No, never in the same way.
30:32Oh no...
30:35I have no idea.
30:36Oh no!
30:38Oh no!
30:39Oh no!
30:39Oh no!
30:39Oh no!
30:41Oh no!
30:44Whoa, whoa, whoa!
30:45Get in step!
30:45I see ya!
31:27Don't be silly.
31:29Anything you need, you have the number that gets straight through to me.
31:34Avoids the operator and all that nonsense.
31:37Oh, I almost forgot.
31:39Something Norton wanted me to pass on.
31:40Apparently there's a book being written about the Princess of Wales, with her cooperation.
31:45What kind of book?
31:46One that claims how badly she's been treated by the family.
31:50Everyone's failure to understand her.
31:52The jealousy everyone feels about her popularity and success.
31:56Norton said he'd had several calls from people saying that either they'd been approached or knew someone else who had.
32:04Probably just gossip.
32:06Norton should know better.
32:11Send in my best.
32:13I will.
32:32You don't think the two incidents are related?
32:34First you get knocked off your bike, then Andrew's house gets broken into.
32:37It's not the first time I've been driven into the gutter by white van now.
32:40Break-ins happen in London hundreds of times a day.
32:43Besides, nothing was stolen.
32:45I'm not answering that.
32:46I'm not speaking on this thing again ever.
32:48I heard a click on the line this morning.
32:51This, sir.
32:52Patrick.
32:56John W.
33:01Jeffson?
33:03Myles.
33:04Good afternoon.
33:06Right.
33:07Of course.
33:09We'll come right back to you.
33:12Myles Hunt-Davis, the Duke of Edinburgh's private secretary.
33:16Requesting a meeting with you as soon as possible.
33:23Three miles from Castle Durg in County Tyrone, when at least two terrorists were frightened
33:27off as they planned to ambush an off-duty member of the Royal Irish Regiment at his home.
33:35...with the security forces in the early hours of this morning.
33:38According to police, the fierce exchange of gunfire...
33:49...to the police.
33:56What's he doing?
33:59I meant to be at this time.
34:03I bet we are really excited about the police's program and the police...
34:14well it's been a while since i've been in kensington palace the leper colony is that what you call it
34:23i think of it as the depot where we put all the mad old arts
34:29all watching each other's comings and goings through net curves
34:37is there any privacy at all none ghastly because privacy is so important isn't it
34:47yes confidentiality too
34:52i suppose that's what i've come to see you about today please
34:58i won't if that's all right
35:07yes i uh i can be a tough old nut
35:11but i've always had a soft spot for you
35:14maybe because you're young maybe because you're a beautiful woman
35:19maybe because i often share your frustration with your husband
35:23i've always felt protective of you fond of you there i've said it so when i see you're making
35:32errors of judgment i want to lean across the table and remind you i'm on your team
35:40what am i trying to say
35:43you're not a novice anymore
35:45you're long past the point of thinking of us as a family that's the mistake people make in the beginning
35:51but you understand i think it's a system and we're all in this system
35:57you me the boss the cousins the uncles the aunts the lepers
36:05for better or for worse we're all stuck in it
36:10and we can't just air our grievances and throw bombs in the air as in a normal family
36:16or we end up damaging something much bigger and something much more important
36:23the system
36:27so the tip i want to give you is this
36:30i mean just just be creative
36:36you can break as many rules as you like you can do whatever you want
36:40you can make whatever arrangements you need to find your own happiness
36:45as long as you remember the one condition
36:48the one rule
36:51you remain loyal to your husband
36:53and loyal to this family
36:55in public
36:59you mean silent
37:01yes
37:04don't rock the boat
37:11right
37:12ever
37:15to the grave
37:28you're not saying anything
37:32i shouldn't think there's anything to say
37:38do you know i think that's the wisest thing i've ever heard come out of your mouth
37:41even though
38:07i don't know even if you think the rode is
38:10gone
38:10i think that's the one thing
38:19she'll be fine
38:22good
38:23yes
38:25I told her that if she were a little more clever
38:29a little more strategic
38:31she could find all the happiness she needs in this system
38:35without anyone being any of the wiser
38:38is that the solution do you think?
38:41that husbands and wives
38:42should keep secrets from one another
38:44secrets? that's not a very nice word
38:47no
38:49no what I mean is
38:50if people were more considerate
38:53more mature
38:54more discreet
38:57it can actually be the glue
38:58that binds it all together
39:03you see I think in a marriage
39:04one should aim to exist
39:06without secrets
39:07or accommodations
39:09well that's because you are who you are
39:12and not just because any husband or wife can feel
39:15when something is awry
39:17but ultimately
39:18it's not what I know about you
39:21or even what you know about me
39:23it's what he knows
39:26about all of us
39:28I think he has the might off occasionally
39:38good night
39:39good night
40:01tonight I'm joined by Andrew Morton
40:03one time royal watcher
40:05and now author of the book that everyone is talking about
40:08Andrew good evening
40:09good evening
40:10for anyone who's been living under a rock
40:13and doesn't know
40:13could you tell us what your book is about?
40:15my book is an intimate portrait of princess Diana
40:17an attempt to tell a story of what her life
40:20and particularly her marriage
40:21is really like
40:22and the fact is
40:23behind the glamorous public facade
40:26what we have is a woman who is deeply unhappy
40:28which you go into in great detail
40:30in a book that seems to be channeling Diana herself
40:33and yet which you claim she was in no way involved
40:35I can say categorically that I did not interview the princess
40:38but I spoke to her friends, associates
40:41anyone who was willing to talk
40:43many of them were not just willing
40:44they were desperate to tell the world how it really is
40:46and we really are talking about the whole world
40:49I mean this book is breaking all kinds of publishing records
40:52in France, Holland, Germany, Japan
40:54and is making you a rich man in the process
40:57do you feel a sense of guilt or responsibility
41:00for throwing the royal family into crisis?
41:03honestly I think the royal family have been throwing themselves into crisis
41:06they knew what they were getting into with Diana
41:08they knew she was vulnerable
41:10they knew she'd had a difficult childhood
41:13they knew she needed love and security and reassurance
41:18but did they give it to her?
41:20no
41:20they gave her the total opposite
41:23so they can't be surprised she wants people to understand
41:25why she hasn't been happy
41:27so where does that leave us?
41:30that leaves us in one of those cyclical moments
41:32where the royal family is in genuine crisis
41:35but where the fragile truce between Diana and the royals
41:38is clearly not working
41:39there are two alternatives to a truce
41:41either you have a long-term negotiated peace
41:45which I don't see happening
41:47the two sides are too entrenched
41:50or you escalate
41:53into what?
41:54all-out war
41:56which sadly seems to be where this is currently headed
41:59but it could be her lowest
42:00to who are gonna come from
42:00if respect or something
42:03never let them know
