Willard and Dibs join Steiny and Guru on a Tuesday edition of the Crossover.
Transcript
00:00All right, it's time for the crossover brought to you by Bay Alarm. Rest easy. We've got you covered. Bayalarm
00:06.com. Let's welcome in Willard and Dibbs. It is the crossover. How you guys doing?
00:11Heyo. What's going on, fellas?
00:13Oh my gosh, I'm so glad to be here right now.
00:15Well, please explain.
00:16Well, it's not a good story. It's just one of those days where you think you've set aside an appointment
00:23that should be about 20 minutes long, and it ends up being your entire day, and basically I got a
00:30new phone today.
00:30So you've all been through this. You've all been through this, where eight different people are like, no, you've got
00:36to hold the phones next to each other like this and sit here for 44 minutes, and then you sit
00:41there for 44 minutes like, oh, it didn't work.
00:44That's okay. Let's just start over. And then, bad story. I'm just glad to be here. I'm glad that that
00:52part of my day is over, and now this part starts.
00:55So you got the iPhone 38?
00:57No, I got a 16. It's not even the brand new one. I'm not like that. I don't ever get
01:02the brand new one. I get whichever one they're hawking, and just give me the phone, and just all I
01:08want is will you please under-promise and over-deliver.
01:12If it's going to take 45 minutes, tell me it's going to take an hour. Don't tell me it's going
01:16to take 20, and then it takes two.
01:18It always takes more when you're trying to transfer the information from one to the other.
01:22Good Lord.
01:23And then when it gets stuck or it doesn't all go all the way through, and you've got to start
01:27over, it's like-
01:27They sent me home.
01:28Yeah.
01:28They're like, here's how you do it by yourself. Just put the two phones on top of each other and
01:33leave. I'm like, I will.
01:35Perfect.
01:35Bye, and I'm pretty sure I'll be back tomorrow, because this doesn't work. Whatever you're telling me doesn't work.
01:41Yeah.
01:42So, anyway.
01:43You know, I don't want to be a contrarian.
01:48Did someone at this store really tell you it was going to be 20 minutes?
01:52Uh-huh.
01:53So you didn't just make up that number?
01:55Mm-mm.
01:55Well, that's-
01:57No, I don't know if you should be mad at them or yourself for being so gullible and thinking it
02:02would only take 20 minutes.
02:03I'm not really mad at anyone.
02:05I'm not.
02:05I'm just mad.
02:06I'd like to get some people to get mad at for me if you want.
02:08Oh, okay. What do you got?
02:09He's got a list.
02:11Okay.
02:11And I think we rolled out one of the names before we joined the crossover here.
02:15And that sounded deserving.
02:16Yeah.
02:16Yeah.
02:17Anyhow.
02:17It's always interesting listening to you guys tell stories about probably future events that are going to happen in my
02:23life.
02:24Like, I've never experienced, you guys are talking about, you know, someone that you don't enjoy playing golf with.
02:30I don't have any of those people right now.
02:32Or parenting stuff.
02:33Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:34But, you know, I come in and listen to you guys and just taking notes.
02:37I'm like, I don't know.
02:38Is that going to be in 10 years?
02:39Is that going to be in five years?
02:41Is that going to be in 20?
02:41I don't know.
02:42But I got to say, this one, you and I might see a little-
02:47Like, everyone knows they're friends in their own way, but I just, I don't know.
02:51I don't know if I could be that mad at somebody.
02:54But it just depends on how it goes.
02:57That I am with my guy?
02:58Well, again, this is a future, this is a glimpse into the future that I'm, I don't have it yet.
03:02But, yeah.
03:04Yeah, I mean getting old.
03:06I mean, it's hard.
03:08I'm not there yet.
03:09No.
03:09I just, no.
03:10It's kind of a flex.
03:11I don't think you meant it that way, but.
03:13Big time flex.
03:14Well, I'm also not very good at golf, so I don't, I don't have, you know, a ton of time
03:18to go out.
03:19Yeah.
03:19Well, it is.
03:21It's early.
03:22Although, Stiney yesterday, or yeah, it must have been yesterday when you told Goo, hey,
03:26probably you shouldn't pick up the game.
03:28And then somebody texted in and said, you're too old to start.
03:31And he was, he was taking it on the chin.
03:33Yeah, and he, it's, it's not going to work with him and golf.
03:38Well, the reason he brought it up, though, is because of my, yeah, my, my, my wife,
03:43the lovely Christy has been texting him so that they can do lessons together because
03:46out of nowhere, we went to Silverado over the weekend.
03:50We ended up with a room that was right out by the range.
03:53And so we kept going out there and she's hooked.
03:57We bought her a set of clubs on the way home.
04:00And I have texts on my phone this morning.
04:02She's like, will you set us a time for Friday morning and Saturday morning, please?
04:06She played twice yesterday.
04:09She went out with me in the morning.
04:11Wow.
04:12And then texted my son and went out with him at night.
04:16Get the bug much?
04:17Seriously.
04:18Holy.
04:19But that's the way she rolls.
04:21Once she's on something, she wants to just do it well.
04:24There was a video of her hitting it straight, though.
04:26I mean, it wasn't as if she's going right and left.
04:29No, and that wasn't our only video.
04:31Oh, okay.
04:31Yeah.
04:32It's kind of like, right?
04:33You don't post the fights online.
04:35Yeah, that's true.
04:36But, no, she's an athlete.
04:38She can hit the ball.
04:39I was impressed.
04:42So, what was I going to say?
04:46Oh, is she like a kid, though, at Christmas where by New Year she's done playing with it?
04:51Or will it last longer than that?
04:53It's possible.
04:54That depends on where it goes next.
04:55But she's liking it early, Stein.
04:58Here's the big question.
04:59She parred a hole yesterday.
05:01Here's the question.
05:02It's pretty impressive.
05:04You can tell from a person's swing.
05:06Like, does she have that full turn and stuff?
05:09You want to see it?
05:10Yeah.
05:10I got videos.
05:11Because Guru will never get that.
05:13You know what I mean?
05:13Right.
05:15LeBron will never get it.
05:17You know what I mean, dude?
05:18Yeah.
05:18To be able to take the club all the way back, the full turn, and then finish.
05:22Yeah.
05:22You know, half the battle, the contact you actually make, though?
05:25That's most of the battle, but, like, you can just tell LeBron can't, like, he doesn't want
05:30to get it up.
05:31He's got two, his muscles are too big.
05:33There's a drop.
05:34Here's, hang on.
05:35Okay.
05:35Makes it tough.
05:36This is an actual live video being shown from Willard to Stein.
05:41That's not bad.
05:41That's not bad.
05:42Yeah.
05:42And I thought that was actually the inspiration for why Guru was so gung-ho about it, because
05:46he saw Christy posting videos, and we know how Guru likes to post videos.
05:50For example, he posted one earlier today of him in the dentist's seat, which we'll have
05:55to discuss at some point tomorrow, but I think that's part of the allure, is that there
06:01are many photo ops involved in golf, if you want it.
06:05You know, you can look good.
06:07Yeah.
06:07You don't have to necessarily play good, but it's a nice course.
06:11It's sunny out.
06:12You got a cool polo.
06:14The fit check is, I think it's a big part of it for some people.
06:17Absolutely.
06:18And also, there's, the more you get into it, the more you realize just the beauty
06:22of the experience of, you just hit this ball, and then you go find it, and you just hit
06:27it again.
06:28You're just out there with your friends, cruising around.
06:30It's a very simple game.
06:32You hit the ball, and you put it in the hole, and there's no rules like pick a ball, you
06:36can't be in the kitchen, and no volley until after the third hit, and there's rules in golf,
06:41obviously, but it's just so simple.
06:42Yeah.
06:43Well, and I find it, it depends on everybody's demeanor.
06:46I find it to be very relaxing.
06:49And yes, it's frustrating.
06:51It's hard.
06:52But I don't, like, a lot of people just can't sort of deal with it, the frustration.
06:58And I've been there probably, like you're saying, Kevin, 25 years ago.
07:02I had a harder time with it.
07:04But now, I'm super thrilled to be out there, and if my wife does actually stick with this,
07:10I'm also not, I know guys who are like, this is, this is my time.
07:14This is what we do to get away from.
07:17But no, like, I love, if we can go do this together, I think that's awesome.
07:22I'm with you.
07:23I think it's awesome.
07:24Yeah, I would prefer that too, because then you could get, you know, then you can play
07:28with the guys three times a week, and then, you know, once a week, yeah, hey.
07:32Yeah, come on.
07:33Yeah.
07:34Let's go.
07:34Hey, once a week, let's go.
07:36Plus, you're only playing nine, that's fine.
07:38And I told you yesterday, I told you yesterday, she is phenomenal for the golf ego, because
07:44she's new and has no sense of what's good and bad.
07:48She thinks it's so impressive that you just hit that ball so far.
07:52It doesn't matter what direction it went.
07:54She's just like, wow, that was incredible.
07:58Well, thanks.
07:59Well, especially with your son, who hits it even further than you.
08:02I'm like, it's in the trees, but whatever.
08:04Like, yeah, I hit it really far.
08:06That's fun.
08:08Oh, the newness of somebody picking up a sport.
08:11The freshness, you know.
08:12It's an exciting game.
08:14Yeah, you know, I don't get mad anymore.
08:17I get a little discouraged at times.
08:20You know, a few holes during a round, you're just like, you stink.
08:23I mean, you're never getting better.
08:25Why do you even come out here spending all this money?
08:28I think you said that a couple months ago.
08:30I bumped into you at the turn or whatever.
08:32Hey, how's it going?
08:33And you said, stink, stank, stunk.
08:35Yes.
08:36I'm like, oh, sounds like you shot about a 48 in the front.
08:39That was probably right.
08:40Yeah.
08:40Probably about right.
08:4148, 46, 94.
08:45There's nothing like talking about your golf scores to a listening audience that doesn't care.
08:50No doubt.
08:51So, hey, we got a draft in a week.
08:55Golden State Warriors.
08:56Yeah.
08:57If they're still in it.
09:00Oh, yeah.
09:01Bleacher Report.
09:02Jimmy Butler in the 11 for Anthony Davis, who says no.
09:06No.
09:07Okay.
09:07Why would...
09:08No, seriously.
09:09I'm just saying what they wrote.
09:10No, no, no.
09:11I totally were there with you.
09:12Why would the Wizards acquire Davis in the first place if they were going to do that?
09:20Because they don't have to do it.
09:23They've got optionality.
09:26But now they might be like, we don't, now we don't have to, we don't have to pay Anthony Davis.
09:32You get Butler, he comes off your cap.
09:34And I would think about it, I think, if I'm the Wizards, because now you got the first and the
09:4011th.
09:41You already got some pieces there.
09:44The question is, would the Warriors do it?
09:46And I'd have to...
09:49Oh, boy.
09:50I know.
09:52If I were Danny Dunleavy and I'm the one making the call, it's a hard no.
09:57It's a no because I don't think that Anthony Davis is cut from the cloth that you want him to
10:03be cut from.
10:04And he's always hurt.
10:05And I can just picture Draymond Green, the first time AD comes up with a softish moment on the court.
10:12And Draymond being in his ear and, you know, I don't think it would go well.
10:17Now, what if there's someone else that came with Anthony Davis?
10:22Like, if that's the reason why...
10:25LeBron.
10:26LeBron would sign as a free agent.
10:27Because I could see that...
10:30No, I'm just saying, like, I could see the...
10:32I could see a couple teams trying to do that to pair AD with LeBron.
10:36Maybe it's probably not the Lakers, but maybe the Clippers.
10:39Maybe it's a team in the East.
10:43Maybe, like...
10:44That, to me, would be the only reason that you consider it.
10:47But giving up the 11th pick and an expiring to then have to probably pay Anthony Davis?
10:53I'm out on that.
10:55Doesn't...
10:55I think you'll all will get what I'm saying with this.
10:58It's like, I understand the thought process behind it, yet find it nauseating at the same time.
11:05It's kind of nauseating.
11:07I...
11:07You're really going to not make this pick.
11:10After all this time, Mike Dunleavy gets a lottery pick in the greatest draft in the history of ever.
11:16And you're not going to make the pick.
11:20You're going to give it up to buy in, to push chips into the table for someone who's about to
11:25turn 39.
11:26Making 58.4 next year.
11:29And then a player op of 62.8 the year after that.
11:33Which they can afford, and it does give you a full year of a Robin, as opposed to whatever Jimmy
11:41Butler...
11:41Like, I get the thought process.
11:43And by a full year, you mean, like, 20 games, probably?
11:46Well, you're being...
11:47And I...
11:47You're being fairly pessimistic.
11:49I get why you are.
11:51But, in theory, he would be allowed to play 80 games.
11:56Sure.
11:57Nobody thinks it would happen.
11:59Something he's never done in the association.
12:01I know.
12:02And it's been a minute since he...
12:04Well, he played 76.
12:06Once upon a time.
12:07I bet he'll play more than Jimmy does this year.
12:10I don't know.
12:11I don't know.
12:11I mean, that's...
12:12I bet on him.
12:13That's a great bet.
12:13That is.
12:14That was one we were talking about last week, actually.
12:16You're listening to 95.7 The Game, KGMZ-FM, and HD1 San Francisco, and Odyssey Sports Station.
12:21Always live on the free Odyssey app, and now broadcasting from the Laughing Monk Studios.
12:25I'll say this.
12:28If the Warriors were to do something, like trade the 11 and Butler for Anthony Davis,
12:36I'm sorry I would come to no other conclusion than, well, LeBron's already running the Warriors.
12:42Because if you don't think LeBron is saying stuff like, go get Anthony Davis and I'll come,
12:48or to Cleveland, you need another player and then I'll come for...
12:54Like, I'm not coming for 15 unless you get Anthony Davis, Warriors.
12:58It's...
12:58I actually think it's more likely that's going on.
13:02With Traymond and Steph and LeBron, they could finagle all kinds of crazy ideas.
13:10I think Clutch needs a new locale, now that the Lakers are being run by Duffy.
13:16Yeah, come on up.
13:17I mean, isn't Moody a Clutch client, too?
13:20I don't even know.
13:21You'd have four of them?
13:23Yeah.
13:23Four of them, all hurt.
13:26Be great.
13:27That's true.
13:27No, I mean, there are worse ideas, but...
13:32There are worse ideas.
13:33I think it just speaks to the...
13:37Kind of the desperation, I feel like, that they're entering this year with.
13:42You know, desperate to try and give it one last swing and hoping that last year wasn't it.
13:49Or I would say even two years ago.
13:50I don't know.
13:50At the time, I kind of felt like when they got Jimmy, that was going to be the year to
13:53try and make something happen.
13:55Just because Jimmy Butler, at the beginning of a full season, along with the older guys, is a lot to
14:01try and figure out for six months.
14:03But, I mean, if you could get off...
14:05We were talking about it earlier.
14:07Costine, you brought up the idea of Jimmy going into the front office and saying,
14:10Hey...
14:11I'm worried about Jimmy.
14:12I want him out here.
14:13Yeah.
14:14I'm like, well, then you got to trade him, then.
14:16I think he's going to be a problem.
14:18Yeah.
14:18I heard that whole discussion, debate.
14:21I was on your side, Evan, as far as, you know, I think that he has to play in order
14:26to show the league that he's capable of still playing at some level.
14:30And if I'm the Warriors and he goes to me this summer and says,
14:33Hey, guys, everyone else is getting a couple years tacked on.
14:37I'd say, well, let's see how you look when you come back on the court.
14:40We're not just going to give you money now because you may not be able to play at all.
14:46And that's all well and good.
14:50But nobody tells Jimmy Butler what to do.
14:53Right.
14:54But he doesn't have a no trade clause.
14:56You and I have a different opinion about, and I think Evan does too, is how important will it be
15:02for him to play 25 games?
15:04And I'm starting to think it might not be as important as we think.
15:10Like, what if he plays 25 games and doesn't look great?
15:14Well, then he goes into free agency, hummina, hummina.
15:18But I think Butler's the kind of guy that if he doesn't play this season, he's still going to be
15:24a free agent next year.
15:25And he probably won't.
15:27He's not going to get the money that he probably wants.
15:31But someone may take it.
15:33Someone will take a chance on Butler for a year or two.
15:35For sure.
15:37I think it's a little like the Porzingis situation.
15:39You guys discussed that as well, where Chris Stapps needed to go out there and play and show what he
15:44can be when he is healthy.
15:46And so by doing that, I think he was able to, I don't know what his contract will be, but
15:51it'll be more than if he didn't play at all, I predict.
15:54But I got to feel like, okay, so the thoughts that you're putting out there about Jimmy Butler, you might
16:01be right.
16:01But this would be Miami Heat level argument arrogance plus a lot more.
16:08Because you're coming off a torn ACL.
16:10No doubt.
16:11I don't know that the Warrior-Butler relationship is like that.
16:14And if he took it there, I think the Warriors would be in a fair space to just, no doubt,
16:20be like, then sit there.
16:22I mean, I think, I think if they sense this, they got to move him, obviously.
16:28But the other thing is, if you, what if, what if LeBron comes and you give him the two for
16:3630 and then you extend Steph and he's got two more.
16:40And now Draymond, Steph and LeBron are sitting with two.
16:45Like, Butler's not going to, like, Butler's going to want that set that year to play with them after coming
16:51back from his injury.
16:53That's great.
16:53You can want that.
16:54But as an organization, I'm not just going to give you a second year before I see what you're going
16:59to look like.
17:00He turns 37 in September and you're coming off an ACL.
17:03I want to make this clear.
17:05I believe the Warriors are in the right to handle it this way.
17:10I just, Jimmy Butler needs to prove to me that he won't try to manipulate or leverage this.
17:18And I think he's going to try to.
17:20And I think if he doesn't like the answer from the Warriors or feels disrespected, I don't think he's going
17:25to play a game for him.
17:26Well, I think they've been pretty accommodating with him considering he didn't go to a single home game after he
17:32got hurt.
17:33I mean, I was just, he was at the D.C. game in Washington, which I'm assuming he was in
17:39town for something else.
17:41And then he was at the Clippers game for the play-in.
17:44But he wasn't on the bench during the regular season.
17:47And by the way, I don't have a problem with that.
17:49If you're rehabbing, you're getting better.
17:51I totally understand it, even though I also saw him at Indian Wells at a tennis tournament.
17:55You know, they're going to let him do what he wants to do.
18:00But it stops it if you're thinking that you need another year at whatever money you're making.
18:07Like, I just think the Warriors understand, and I think Jimmy does too, that his leverage is at an all
18:14-time low at this stage of his career.
18:16What if I told you also that during all the head coach stuff, Jimmy Butler was vocal about wanting Steve
18:22Kerr to be the coach again?
18:25I believe that.
18:27So then would you follow that up by skipping the year?
18:31Well, I don't think I ever said skipping the year.
18:34I just think that if he's in his rehab and he doesn't feel like he's ready, he's not going to
18:40bust his hump to come back.
18:41I'll give you this point.
18:43Steve Kerr signed a two-year deal.
18:45If they rip up Draymond's and do a two-year deal and they give Steph Curry a one-year extension
18:51and he's on a two-year deal, if I'm Jimmy, would I go ask the question?
18:55Yeah.
18:56I would think.
18:57I would assume.
18:58I would think.
18:58I just, but I'm with you guys that if I'm the Warriors, I would try to politely say no.
19:04Well, it's a wait and see for me.
19:06I mean, I'm going to want to see it.
19:08I'm going to want to see how you comport yourself through the rehab and how much you get ready.
19:14And, you know, are you around during the rehab?
19:16Are you mentoring the 11th pick who you make a pick and is a young guy?
19:21And are you going to mentor him the way you did Kaminga?
19:23A lot of things I want to see before I go out there and give him another year on top
19:27of it.
19:28And I totally agree with you guys.
19:30Like, I wouldn't be willing to do it either.
19:33I'd rather not do it.
19:35Of course I wouldn't.
19:36The question is, is, like, they know if there's going to be a ramification from that or not.
19:42Maybe there won't be.
19:44Maybe there's no issue and Butler will be back in February and he plays great and he either becomes a
19:50free agent or the Warriors resign him.
19:52And I just, here's these guys, man.
19:57I know.
19:58These NBA players, they just.
20:00And here's the real.
20:01Like, if the fan base is still activated, if the organization is still activated by this concept of everything for
20:10Steph,
20:12then don't you try like hell to trade Jimmy Butler this offseason?
20:16Because he is absolutely 100%, because of health, not the right person to maximize the rest of Steph.
20:24Well, and also because of his age.
20:25Age and injury.
20:26Sure, but mainly injury.
20:28I mean, to think that Steph is going to, say, be better two years from now than he will be
20:33this year is crazy.
20:34So, like, with each passing year, his chances to do something meaningful go down.
20:40So, therefore, what I want is a player who plays on opening night this year.
20:45Well, the other thing with Butler is you have to, like, if you think Butler is going to be a
20:53problem.
20:54Well, first of all, let's just take the positive.
20:57If Butler comes back with 25 or 30 games left, like, that's the cherry next year.
21:03You know what I mean?
21:04Like, you can always say, if you're having a pretty good game, and Butler's coming back, and Butler's coming back.
21:12The minute you say Butler's not going to come back, or you don't think he's going to come back,
21:17then you lose that chance that he could elevate your team when he comes back.
21:23And then you're just going to play the full season without Butler.
21:27And I think the handwriting's on the wall, if that's the way you're going into the season.
21:32Like, if they don't have Butler for the whole year, they're in big trouble.
21:38If Butler's coming back as a reality with 30 games left and he's functional,
21:43well, I kind of want to see what happens then if we're hanging around.
21:46Also, if your season's not going the right way, you either, you could choose to hold on to him.
21:52You also could trade him at the deadline, right?
21:54What kind of position are they in to be a good basketball team the first half of the year?
22:01I mean, not a great one.
22:02Like, what's that scenario?
22:04Who is helping them do that?
22:08Let's say Steph and Draymond are healthy.
22:10That's the only one.
22:11Right.
22:11And a healthy Steph, yeah.
22:13And Wendy, by the way, is reporting today that the Lakers and LeBron are all trading numbers as we speak.
22:18I mean, I don't know how much of that's just leverage play or whatever,
22:21but I still think that's the most likely landing spot for him.
22:26Yeah.
22:26So if you come back with just basically what you had last year,
22:30you keep Chris Stapps on a smaller deal and maybe you bring back Melton and you got pods.
22:35Don't forget your boy pods.
22:36And the 11th pick.
22:37Right.
22:38You got the axle.
22:39So I don't think that you get to February and if you're 55 games in, you're probably not 40 and
22:4515.
22:46You're probably 23 and 22 in that 9-10 spot again, hoping for Jimmy to come save the day.
22:52Is it weird for me to say that even that feels optimistic?
22:55Depends on health, obviously.
22:57You know, last year before Jimmy got hurt, they were pretty good.
23:01Yeah, because Jimmy was on the team.
23:03Right.
23:03I mean, when's the last time that they were good and Jimmy wasn't on the team?
23:07A winning record and Jimmy wasn't playing?
23:10The previous year when they went and...
23:13So two seasons ago.
23:14Right.
23:15When they started 12-4 or whatever it was at the beginning of that year.
23:18The other thing that could simplify this is even if Butler does this,
23:26they'll move him at the deadline then.
23:27Like, I think they will be able to move Jimmy Butler if they absolutely have to at the deadline.
23:33That's probably true.
23:34Because somebody's going to want to...
23:35And you know what?
23:37I'll leave you with this.
23:38Would you trade him right now for De'Aaron Fox?
23:41No.
23:42No.
23:43Only because the deal is too long.
23:45That's right.
23:45Yeah.
23:46And I don't know how he cares.
23:46How about Zach Levine?
23:48I mean...
23:48He's only got two more years.
23:50I'll let it there for you guys.
23:5395-7.
23:55The game.
23:57Christy says you can come to the lesson, Evan.
23:59I'm in.
24:00Okay.
