00:46Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelli.
00:48We are learning more this morning about a deadly shooting in an ROTC classroom at a Virginia university
00:54that the FBI is investigating as an act of terrorism.
00:58The person killed was Army Lieutenant Colonel Brandon Shaw, an Iraq war veteran,
01:03and also a professor at Old Dominion University.
01:06Two other Army service members were injured in the attack.
01:09Authorities say ROTC students stepped in to confront the gunman,
01:13who was ultimately killed during that confrontation.
01:16They say one student stabbed the attacker, but it's not yet clear if that's what killed him.
01:20The suspect has been identified as Mohamed Jalloh, a former Army National Guardsman
01:26who was convicted in 2016 of providing material support to ISIS
01:31after attempting to carry out a terrorist attack, according to the FBI special agent in charge.
01:37During his trial, Jalloh denounced ISIS, writing in a letter to the judge
01:41that he had been, quote,
01:42driven by my emotions rather than my intellect,
01:45and that he regretted, quote,
01:47becoming involved with such an evil organization.
01:50The judge sentenced him to 11 years in prison.
01:53He was released in 2024.
01:55It is not yet clear why he was released early.
01:58Investigators say Jalloh reportedly shouted,
02:01Allah Akbar, an Arabic phrase meaning God is greatest,
02:05before opening fire on campus.
02:07Military records show Jalloh served in the Virginia National Guard
02:10from 2009 to 2015 as a combat engineer before being honorably discharged.
02:17We are learning new details this morning about the truck ramming attack at a Michigan synagogue.
02:22Federal officials say the man who drove into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield has been identified,
02:28and the FBI is now investigating it as a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.
02:34The Department of Homeland Security says the suspect was 41-year-old Ayman Mohamed Ghazali,
02:39a U.S. citizen originally from Lebanon.
02:42Straight Arrow news was on the scene as law enforcement vehicles filled the streets around the synagogue,
02:48armed officers swept the area, and children were escorted away from the building.
02:52Investigators say the truck smashed through the synagogue's front doors and drove down a hallway inside.
02:57Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard says security personnel confronted the suspect.
03:02He is dead this morning, though investigators have not yet confirmed exactly how he died.
03:07A security guard was struck by the truck and knocked unconscious, but is expected to recover.
03:13Temple Israel says all 140 students inside the building, along with staff and teachers, were safely accounted for.
03:20We are just absolutely amazed at the heroism of our security team who did exactly what we expected of them.
03:29At the same time, we were trained, and all of our staff members, all of our teachers have been trained
03:37over the years
03:37because we expect these things to happen. We just never want them to be real.
03:41The crash also sparked a fire and filled parts of the building with heavy smoke.
03:46About 30 law enforcement officers were treated for smoke inhalation as crews secured the scene.
03:52Security has now been increased at synagogues and Jewish organizations across the Detroit area.
03:57This wasn't an attack on just Jews. This was an attack on all of us and our way of life.
04:01You should all be free to pray wherever you want. This is not just about us.
04:05This is about the community and how we should live as humans.
04:08Investigators are still working to determine the suspect's motive and piece together the final sequence of events.
04:14Now to the war. Tehran is under attack this morning, and President Donald Trump is issuing a new warning
04:21as the war with Iran approaches the two-week mark. Explosions rocked the Iranian capital
04:26as demonstrators gathered for the annual Quds Day rally in support of Palestinians.
04:32Thousands packed the streets chanting slogans including death to Israel and death to America.
04:38Iranian state television says a large blast struck a square filled with demonstrators.
04:44The cause of the explosion is not clear, but earlier, Israel warned it would, quote,
04:49conduct operations in this area in the coming hours and urge people nearby to evacuate.
04:55President Trump also issued a new threat aimed at what he called the deranged scumbags of the Iranian regime,
05:02telling them to watch what happens today.
05:05He offered no specifics but added,
05:16Trump called it a great honor.
05:18Meanwhile, U.S. Central Command says rescue operations are underway after a U.S. military refueling plane went down in
05:26Iraq.
05:27The KC-135 aircraft was part of the operation against Iran.
05:31Officials say the crash was not caused by hostile or friendly fire.
05:36CENTCOM confirms four of the six crew members who were on board died.
05:41But rescue operations continue for the remaining two.
05:44And the conflict continues to rattle global energy markets.
05:48Oil prices remain around $100 a barrel even after Trump eased sanctions on Russian oil,
05:54allowing countries to buy Russian shipments stranded at sea.
05:58That move comes as the Strait of Hormuz,
06:01which carries roughly 20 percent of the world's oil supply, remains closed.
06:06To politics now, one of the most powerful Democrats in Congress says he is not done yet.
06:12South Carolina Congressman Jim Clyburn, now 85 years old, announced he will run for another term in the House.
06:19Clyburn has been in Congress since 1993,
06:22becoming the first black lawmaker elected from South Carolina since Reconstruction.
06:27Over three decades, he rose into the top ranks of House Democratic leadership and became one of the party's most
06:34influential power brokers.
06:35He is perhaps best known nationally for one moment in 2020,
06:39when his endorsement helped revive Joe Biden's struggling presidential campaign just days before the South Carolina primary.
06:47Now, even as several longtime Democrats step aside, including Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer,
06:54Clyburn says he still believes he has work left to do.
06:58I do believe that I'm very well equipped and healthy enough to move into the next term
07:12trying to do the things that are necessary to continue that pursuit of perfection.
07:19This could very well be my last term, and it could very well not be.
07:27We'll just see how things go.
07:29If re-elected, Clyburn would be 88 years old by the end of his next term,
07:33at a time when both parties are facing growing pressure from younger candidates calling for a generational shift in Washington.
07:41North Korea's leader, Kim Jong-un, is once again putting his daughter front and center,
07:47this time at a firing range.
07:49New images from state media show Kim and his teenage daughter Kim Joo-ae firing pistols together during a visit
07:56to a weapons factory.
07:58Senior officials joined them on the range as Kim inspected a newly produced handgun and praised it as excellent.
08:05The visit was part of a broader push to expand North Korea's conventional weapons production
08:10after years of focusing heavily on nuclear arms.
08:14And it wasn't just small arms.
08:15Earlier this week, Kim and his daughter were also seen monitoring the launch of strategic cruise missiles
08:21from one of North Korea's newest naval destroyers.
08:25The missiles reportedly hit island targets off North Korea's west coast,
08:29with Kim saying the tests show the need to maintain what he calls a powerful and reliable nuclear war deterrent.
08:36Kim's daughter, believed to be about 13 years old,
08:39has appeared at missile launches, military parades, and weapons demonstrations since 2022.
08:44South Korean intelligence officials now believe she is likely being positioned as the next leader of the Kim dynasty.
08:53Finally this morning, NASA now has a target launch date for its Artemis II mission,
08:58which will send astronauts around the moon for the first time since the Apollo era.
09:03And the date is no joke.
09:06The mission has faced a series of delays in recent months.
09:10First, a fuel leak in February forced NASA to postpone an earlier launch window.
09:15Then, engineers discovered a helium flow issue,
09:19prompting managers to roll the rocket and spacecraft off the launch pad at Cape Canaveral
09:24and bring them back into the Vehicle Assembly Building for repairs.
09:28Now, NASA says it has completed a flight readiness review and is targeting April 1st for the launch.
09:35The mission will carry four astronauts on a roughly 10-day trip around the moon,
09:39a lunar flyby designed to test key spacecraft systems before NASA attempts a future moon landing.
09:47Again, while I am comfortable and the agency is comfortable with targeting April 1st as our first opportunity,
09:53just keep in mind we still have work to go.
09:55There are still things that need to be done within the VAB and out at the pad.
10:00And as always, we'll always be guided by what the hardware is telling us,
10:04and we will launch when we're ready.
10:07NASA plans to roll the rocket back out to the launch pad March 19th.
10:12If all goes as planned, the Artemis II crew will travel more than half a million miles
10:17looping around the moon before returning safely to Earth.
10:21How cool is that?
10:22Let's hope the third time is a charm when it comes to the launch.
10:26All right, before we head out, here's what we're tracking today.
10:28At 10, the Labor Department releases its latest report on job openings,
10:32a fresh look at how tight the U.S. labor market really is.
10:36At noon, a judge will hear arguments over courtroom access in the Charlie Kirk murder case,
10:42including whether cameras will be banned and if key filings remain sealed.
10:46Later today, Vice President J.D. Vance heads to Rocky Mount, North Carolina,
10:50where he will deliver remarks.
10:52In the 6 o'clock hour, President Trump departs Joint Base Andrews for Palm Beach.
10:57No noise, no signs, just the story.
