With the southern U.S. facing the growing risk of flash flooding, AccuWeather's Anna Azallion explains the differences between a flash flood watch, warning and even a flash flood emergency.
Transcript
00:00A quick reminder, the difference between a watch and a warning, and I'll even tell you about the emergency.
00:05So first, a flash flood watch, that means that the conditions are right for there to be flash flooding.
00:12So be ready, have ways to receive alerts about any warnings that are issued.
00:16Once a flash flood warning is issued, that means flooding is either already occurring or it will be occurring very,
00:23very soon.
00:24So especially anyone in low-lying areas that tend to flood in any kind of heavy rainfall situations, you want
00:31to move to higher ground and just be ready for any ponding, flash flooding on roadways especially.
00:37Then we have a flash flood emergency.
00:39Now, this is the highest level of alert that can be issued when it comes to flash flooding.
00:44It's a rare situation, and it's only issued when there is a severe threat to human life and catastrophic damage.
00:51So usually flash flooding is ongoing.
00:52There have usually already been several water rescues.
00:56It gets to a very dangerous and, again, life-threatening situation.
01:00So I especially remind you about flooded roadways because it's easy to think, you know what, I can make it
01:09through.
01:09It doesn't look like that much water, but it is just not worth the risk because it doesn't take as
01:14much water as you would think to cause problems.
01:16Just six inches of water can sweep you off your feet.
01:1912 inches of flood water can carry away most cars.
01:22And if you think, you know, I have an SUV, I have a truck, I'll be okay.
01:26Two feet of water, 24 inches, can carry away large vehicles.
01:29And, again, it's hard to tell just looking at the road how much water there actually is.
01:35That's why we say turn around, don't drown.
01:36It is better safe than sorry than when it comes to any flooded roadways.
01:41Also a reminder, any objects that were underwater, don't touch them until they're cleaned.
01:46Health and hygiene are things to keep in mind as well.
