00:00REIB is the UK's independent rail accident investigation body.
00:05Our role is to learn lessons from accidents and incidents to try to prevent them happening again.
00:12Our work covers the mainline, light railways, metro and heritage railways.
00:19With operational centres in Farnborough and Derby, we have the capability to deploy to
00:25accidents anywhere on the UK rail network 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
00:33Our inspectors are professional investigators drawn from a variety of backgrounds.
00:39They include specialists in railway disciplines as well as other relevant fields such as human
00:45factors. They are supported by investigation specialists who look at areas such as electronic
00:51data as well as staff looking after finance, health and safety, operational support and external
00:57communications. Industry stakeholders are required by law to notify REIB when certain kinds of accidents
01:05and incidents occur. When notified of an accident, our inspectors may visit the scene to gather evidence.
01:13They examine and analyse trains, tracks, signalling systems and infrastructure as well as taking witness statements.
01:24After completing an investigation, REIB publishes a detailed report. The report not only identifies the
01:31immediate cause but also any underlying factors and safety learning. Our findings are entirely evidence-based
01:40and focused on identifying causes and recommending safety improvements. We do not assign blame or liability.
01:50Our reports are publicly available and are shared with the relevant safety regulators, operators and those involved.
01:58By helping the railway learn from incidents and recommending safety improvements, REIB plays a crucial role in
02:05enhancing the safety of the UK's rail and tram networks.
