00:00That's it by cycle! Ha! No! Ubers!
00:03I think that's what cycling Mark is for. He regulates the roads.
00:07Well I was an Olympic cyclist and I was world champion for 24 years!
00:11You're joking!
00:12I went to London Olympics in Beijing. So talk to me about cycling, boy.
00:15I will happily talk to you about cycling.
00:17Do you think it's safe to cycle in London?
00:19Absolutely not.
00:20I feel like I feel safe, yeah.
00:21I don't think it's safe, neither for the cyclists, neither for the people or for the vehicle drivers.
00:26Can't really ride a bike.
00:27It's pretty safe. It's a lot quieter now than it used to be.
00:30If you stick to one side of the road it's usually okay.
00:33If you were to cycle, would you feel safe cycling through London?
00:36Oh! Should have asked that geezer!
00:37I think it's one of the safest cities in the world.
00:41Anybody can cycle. Half of them don't have helmets. Most of them don't have helmets.
00:46There are two people cycling and they don't have helmets, so there you go.
00:50I think they cut corners.
00:51They're expecting motorists to respect them, but some of them do not respect other people on the road as well.
01:00Them going through red lights, even as a pedestrian walking about, they're trying to storm through.
01:05Sometimes they act like they're pedestrians, sometimes they act like they're motorists,
01:09sometimes they're cyclists, they're trying to merge everything in one.
01:12A lot of people say that they go through red lights, a lot of people don't wear helmets.
01:15Is that something you see quite a lot?
01:18100%.
01:18You've got to smirk like someone who does that?
01:21No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Allegedly.
01:23I worked for the West Midlands as the walking and cycling commissioner for three years with the mayor.
01:28And the infrastructure there allowed it more, there was more space.
01:31But the reason why the likes of Amsterdam works is because they've made it cycle friendly
01:36and for the road consumer as well, not just for the pedestrian or the person on the bike.
01:42It needs to have more space allocated because trying to squeeze in even more traffic on the roads of London,
01:49there's not enough for the buses and the cars as it is.
01:51Maybe making other road users more aware of cyclists.
01:55I think that's what the problem is. We're not used to having lots of cyclists in this country.
02:00More cycle lanes, maybe.
02:02There is a couple, I think more in the tourist spots, but I think going into work, there's not enough
02:08probably.
02:08And that's probably where they should be instead of like next to Buckingham Palace, for example.
02:12When you take on a car, you do your driving lessons and you learn the rules and the conduct of
02:18the road.
02:18As cyclists, you can almost, from a child, jump on a bike, ride on the road, ride anywhere to be
02:24honest,
02:25but they've got no... Some people in schools are doing bikeability, but they're giving no skill sets,
02:30no blueprint to follow like we are as a road consumer in the car.
02:33And that's the way it is.
02:38Let's go.
