Along the shores of Maputo's Pescadores fishing community, dozens of small wooden boats remain idle as fishermen struggle to afford fuel following a government price hike announced in early May. The increase was attributed to disruptions in global fuel markets

00:00Rice and fuel prices linked to tensions in the Middle East are forcing many fishermen in Mozambique's capital to keep
00:06the boat assured,
00:08threatening livelihoods and driving up the cost of living in one of the world's poorest countries.
00:14The impact has been felt across the fishing sector, where thousands of families depend on daily catches for survival.
00:24We appeal to the countries that are in conflict, because these countries don't only affect those countries, they affect the
00:30whole world,
00:31because this precious liquid doesn't just help Iran, it doesn't just help the United States of America, it helps the
00:38whole world.
00:42So we appeal to them to sit down and talk so that we can overcome this confusion that is happening,
00:48because it affects the world in general.
00:53The fuel shortage and higher prices are also affecting fish traders, many of whom rely entirely on daily sales to
01:02support their families.
01:05When there is no fuel, what the government does affect us so much, because our children don't go to school.
01:10We don't have money to buy rice or anything else, first because they're not studying, and we're not doing anything.
01:16Our children depend on this place.
01:19The effect extends well beyond the fishing industry.
01:23With fuel serving as a critical impute for transportation and commerce, economists warn that higher energy costs are likely to
01:32drive inflation
01:33and further strain vulnerable households.
01:37Fuel is the engine of the economy.
01:39And when there is a fuel shortage, when its price increases, one thing leads to another.
01:45A fuel shortage tends to put pressure on price increases, and this will trigger a chain reaction of increases in
01:53the prices of products and services on the market.
01:56For now, many fishermen in Maputo remain ashore, waiting for fuel prices to stabilise, and hoping that a crisis unfolding
02:05thousands of kilometres away will not continue to determine whether they can earn a living.
