00:00South African motorists scrambled to gas stations on Tuesday evening to fill up their tanks
00:06before a major price hike at midnight.
00:09The increase is a consequence of the war in the Middle East, which is affecting oil and
00:14gas prices across the globe.
00:17Many drivers were dismayed.
00:19It's too big to take in terms of, because if the petrol goes up it means everything
00:26is going up and the only person who will be suffering is us, the consumer.
00:32So, yeah, as much as it's not the fault of the garage is, is it global or anything, but
00:43yeah, maybe in two months' time or in one month we'll be suffering some food prices.
00:51On Tuesday evening, some gas stations near Johannesburg even had to turn away cars.
00:56customers as they had run out of diesel and gasoline.
01:02Petrol prices were announced to increase by more than three rand, while diesel saw a more
01:08than seven rand hike.
01:11The prices sent shockwaves across the country, despite the finance ministry's announcement
01:16that the fuel levy would decrease by three rand per litre.
01:22The situation is another situation.
01:24There's a lot of us, this situation because of people who start working from home and then
01:30others who don't have another alternative, that means they're going to stay at home.
01:34So my message to the government, can they at least try and implement something, come
01:39up with ideas, strategize, so that the country, we can go forward there, because of some of
01:44us depend on these cars, for our livelihoods, and then yeah, that's what I can say.
01:49South Africa's logistics and transportation sectors are the first to suffer from the situation.
01:55In Pretoria, the city bus service was already disrupted on Tuesday due to fuel shortages.
