00:01This Turkish ship's arrival in Mogadishu port on Friday marked the start of a major new project for Somalia.
00:10The country is said to see its first offshore oil drilling operations carried out jointly with Turkey.
00:18Turkish officials present in Mogadishu also celebrated the joint hunt for oil off the coast of Somalia.
00:27God willing, the area where the well we will be drilling is located is 370 kilometers offshore and at a
00:35water depth of approximately 3,500 meters.
00:39And starting tomorrow morning, we plan to drill to a depth of 4,000 meters.
00:44So in total, we will reach a depth of 7,500 meters.
00:49As of today, Turkey is rising to the ranks of countries conducting deep sea drilling beyond its borders.
00:55And I believe that this process, which began with Oroch Rezi and continues with Sagri Bey,
01:00is opening a new chapter both in Turkey-Somalia relations and in Turkish oil and natural gas exploration.
01:08Turkey is one of Somalia's main military and economic partners.
01:13Ankara notably inaugurated its largest overseas base in Mogadishu in 2017.
01:20Turkey helps us in security-related areas and there are other countries that also help us with the humanitarian situation
01:27of the country.
01:28And there are other countries that also help us.
01:31But no one has so far started oil exploration and drilling for us, except Turkey.
01:38Some researchers estimate that Somalia could hold billions of barrels of oil reserves.
01:43But the country's political instability and armed conflict have so far hampered exploration.
