Rare baby parrots born in Belgium zoo
Two rare baby parrots were born earlier this month in a Belgian zoo, the wildlife park said in a statement on Wednesday (July 29). According to Pairi Daiza, it is now the only public conservation centre in the world to successfully breed all three species of blue macaw after two endangered Lear's macaw chicks hatched earlier this month. Born on July 1 and 3, the chicks are the first offspring of a pair whose first breeding attempt failed last year, said the zoo. Lear's macaws are classified as endangered and are found in the wild only in northeastern Brazil. The births followed changes to the park's breeding programme aimed at recreating the species' natural colony environment. The chicks, now about three weeks old, are being hand-fed under close supervision.
