00:00Inside the group, they opened in the biggest stadium in the World Cup tournament this year.
00:05In fact, the stadium was a frontrunner to host the final, but then New York, New Jersey was
00:09ultimately chosen for its proximity to New York City. The players are ready. They are in the
00:14tunnel. Let's get you down to the pitch. Martin Tyler and Andy Townsend with the call.
00:24Pretty much most of their squad now playing all the big clubs in and around Europe.
00:28They've got good experience, good World Cup experience behind them, and I think they're
00:34going to be a real tough nut to crack. I do. I think this Japan team, despite one or two
00:39key players that aren't unfortunately here because of injury, I think they're going to
00:43be one to watch.
00:47Dallas was a venue in 1994. The Cotton Bowl, which still exists, isn't used for occasions
00:55such as this now. They had six fixtures, including a quarterfinal featuring the Netherlands, who
01:02were beaten then 3-2 by Brazil, and it was a World Cup classic. Many of you will remember
01:07it. It turned out to be the last of Ronald Koeman's 78 caps. So he bowed out as a player
01:14in Dallas. We can't bow out as a coach today, but there's a lot of expectation on his shoulders.
01:19Oh, yeah. Look, there's no doubt. When you're the Netherlands coach, they're a very gifted
01:25nation, and there's a pressure that comes with that. But Ronald Koeman has lived with pressure
01:30pretty much all his life, playing at some of the very biggest clubs and managing a great
01:35number of significant teams, too. So that won't faze him. He's going to be ruthless with
01:40his decision-making. That's the kind of coach he is. But if he gets it right, then the Netherlands
01:45can play. Make no mistake about that. Yeah, they're one of the World Cup's most eye-catching
01:54nations, but one of the most unlucky. The three finals they got to. The first two were against
02:00host nations. Germany in 74 and Argentina in 78. Away finals. Yes, very true. Very true.
02:06As a young lad, I do remember watching that one against Argentina back in 78. But this
02:12current group of players, gifted, can they knit it together? Can they just have that bit
02:18of harmony in the background, which sometimes has been missing from the Netherlands squads?
02:23If they get that side of it right, there's no doubt in what they can do on the field.
02:28Well, the orange is coming. That's what they've been saying. The Dutch fans actually rather personified
02:35by the Dutch bus, an open-top bus, which is orange from, I'm sure all the parts of the engine
02:41are orange as well. And that's been chipped over from the Netherlands and is here in the vicinity
02:48of the stadium. They go big on the big occasions.
03:01I think it's quite a nice touch, Andy, that we get all the players, including the substitutes,
03:06to be out and sort of unveiled to the world rather than the sub sitting in the dugouts.
03:11I agree. It is nice, that. You're right, Martin. Three years. You've seen those that aren't
03:16starting sitting in the dugouts or lining up close to the dugouts, whereas now it's lovely
03:22to get them right all around the center circle, belting out their respective anthems.
03:32Please stand if you are able for the national anthem of the Netherlands.
03:44Please stand and see if you are not going for it.
03:52Please stand and think about it.
03:58Please stand and think about it.
04:02Please stand and think about it.
04:03Please stand and notice.
04:04Imagine and think about it.
04:37Please remain standing if you are able
04:38For the national anthem of Japan
05:21For the national anthem of Japan
05:24For the national anthem of Japan
05:39Exactly
05:49Okay we're going to a game 3-on-3 win or go home
05:52And this local crew, they've never gone home
05:54Not since 1996
05:55For real?
05:56Yeah, anyone, any time
05:57And guess who showed up?
05:59Three legends, peak of their powers
06:03Everyone thinks that's gotta be it
06:07but the football guys had other plans two goals just like that and then the kid beat
06:12Zidane with his own move they say Zidane didn't speak for a week that's cold
06:16and they're strangely opposite views maybe because you've played at this level and I haven't
06:33the ref camp takes me into it
06:36yeah
06:55the referees have had a lot to learn with the new regulations
07:04some of them are laws but not all of them
07:19well as befits the occasion the referee is based in Texas
07:23Ismail Elfat originally from Morocco and now lives in Austin less than 200 miles south of here
07:32and on VAR duty is Armando Villarreal
07:51well first choice Bart Verbruggen is in goal after an injury in the final warm-up game last Monday
07:56and his Brighton club mate Jan-Paul van Hecker is alongside the captain Virgil van Dijk
08:04first choice midfield for the Dutch Gravander, de Jong and Reinders
08:08Crescensio Somerville uncapped until this month brings pace to the attack
08:12Daniel Marlon through the middle and Cody Gakbo from the left
08:16and the record goal scorer Memphis Depay who now plays in Brazil is fit to be on the bench
08:23USA born Zeon Suzuki has been a groundbreaker in Serie A with Palmer three at the back with Ito
08:31it's a great passing range
08:33it's the down is the captain after the shock axing of Botaro Endo
08:38it's a big story this in Japan
08:41Paisu Sano takes his place
08:43Bakufu Zakubo has the X-factor in attack
08:46and several striking options but Ayase way to get the knot
08:50no surprisingly
08:52he finished top scorer in the Eredivisie in the Netherlands
08:56and in fact the Japanese have got two players based in the Netherlands
09:02playing in their football in the Eredivisie
09:05Holland, Netherlands have got none
09:07yeah
09:09amazing really
09:12but really looking forward to the game Martin
09:14here we go
09:16always vital to get off to a good start
09:17game one so important
09:29well they have played each other once before in a World Cup in South Africa
09:35and Wes Schneider who's here today scored the winner
09:38and of course the Dutch went on to get to that final in 2010
09:46here comes the countdown
10:01there's been a lot of attention on the pitch here
10:03with that indoor lighting just above Head Heights
10:08spread across it for all the time Andy and I have been here until today
10:12to encourage the growth and make sure that it's fit for purpose
10:16certainly starting like that
10:19here's a way down
10:23here's a way down
10:24guys are made are trying to take it on
10:28and now Somerville could be a lot of counter attacking in this game
10:37good covering by Taniguchi
10:42speed is of the essence particularly throughout the Japan side really
10:46and Somerville has brought it Andy to the Dutch team
10:50he's certainly extremely rapid
10:53this interior Somerville
10:55I think what we've seen Martin in a few of the opening matches is those teams that get around the
10:59pitch really quickly
11:00apply pressure
11:02false errors
11:03are the teams that can kind of gain the initiative early on
11:07I think we've got two teams today
11:10expect to Japan to do exactly that I don't think they'll sit off of this Dutch team for too long
11:15the initial moments maybe
11:17and then of course the Netherlands when they get it forward get it through the middle of the park up
11:22front
11:22in Marlin in Somerville and in Cody Gakpo
11:25they've got people that can hurt you
11:28it's Gakpo
11:29played his 50th cap in the last
11:31the one his 50th cap in the last warm-up game against Uzbekistan
11:34he scored both goals
11:35it's a narrow win 2-1
11:37both goals from the penalty spot
11:42here's Frankie de Jong
11:46missed out on the Euros
11:49that's got to the semi-finals
11:52it's the one tournament they have won back in 1988
11:55Koeman was a player then
11:59here's Gakpo of Liverpool
12:03wants to come in on his right foot
12:05de Jong
12:12Van Hecker
12:15now the swashbuckling Denzel Dumfries
12:18yeah he likes to get forward he's good at it
12:24see again here already
12:26Japan keeping their shape
12:28making sure that they don't get stretched and pulled around and
12:31invite the Netherlands to play between them
12:34Gakpo trying to start it in
12:35Marlin
12:36he could hold it up
12:37and set somebody else
12:38set himself up
12:42well he's been a bit of a stopgap central striker
12:46often plays wide
12:47and he's missed a lot of chances in the warm-up
12:49I suppose you could say he missed this one
12:51but it was a good effort
12:51great effort Martin
12:53he does really well doesn't he
12:54to gather that to get really close
12:57and his Taniguchi actually gets a little too tight to him
13:00once he's rolling
13:02and he's always going to get that shot away
13:03it's a really good hit
13:04and it's a good stop from Suzuki
13:10well this is going to be an issue
13:12it's an issue in football
13:13not just in world cups
13:14and high level football
13:16the grabbing and grappling
13:20the lawmakers are trying to
13:22take some of that out of it
13:27but it's an almost impossible thing to call isn't it
13:31it's very difficult
13:32yeah
13:33it's very difficult
13:35when everybody's doing it
13:36this is that shot again
13:37from Daniel Marlin
13:38engineered the space for himself really well
13:41actually although the goalkeeper saves it
13:42almost too quick for him
13:44kind of bends his fingertips back
13:46but it just about gets behind it
13:48and does enough
13:49does enough
13:49he's been playing in Italy
13:52Serie A
13:53Sion Suzuki
13:55and
13:56it's really taken Japanese
13:59goalkeeping to a new level
14:00in terms of ability
14:01and also in terms of height as well
14:09Bravo a bit
14:09Marlin
14:11there's a bit of style about these early minutes from the Netherlands
14:14yeah really nice
14:15good play again
14:16it's just a little fiery
14:18the ball back from Daniel Marlin towards Somerville
14:20but
14:22really nice work initially
14:24the way that Gravenberg weaved his way infield
14:27and
14:28and that little give and go
14:29very nearly
14:37and
14:38and
14:41and
14:41and
14:42the
14:42two Brighton players
14:43there's another one in the squad as well
14:45in the
14:46and that's
14:46and that's
14:47Viva
14:49and it's understudy to
14:50Dumfries
14:51who's on the ball here
14:59and
14:59and
14:59and
14:59and
15:00extraordinary character really
15:01and
15:01because he
15:03wasn't an instant success as a young player in his own country
15:06in fact he's probably more appreciated
15:08and
15:08certainly in the northwest of England
15:10but in England generally
15:11than he is at home
15:12even though he's the
15:13the leader of the game
15:20the leader of the game
15:43one and
15:43a needless one in their situation to concede
15:47and
15:48and
15:51Camada
15:52over the ball
15:53Camada
15:55has arrived
15:56for his country
15:57having won a trophy with his club
15:59Crystal Palace
16:00he
16:01he
16:02wrote the conference league
16:06a real chance to put some pressure on
16:08that
16:09zonally
16:10set up
16:10back line from the Netherlands
16:12and
16:12it's a deep one
16:14has it gone out?
16:15the flag is up to suggest that he had already gone out
16:20just a little too deep that one wasn't it?
16:22yeah it was a good idea
16:22because they overloaded well
16:24correct
16:26here the blue shirts
16:27just
16:28spun towards that far post there but
16:31just a fraction too heavy
16:33good tempo to the game
16:35nice start to it
16:38and we don't have to worry too much about the temperatures
16:41because
16:41there's some air conditioning in here
16:44the
16:48hydration break will happen
16:49it's because it's a tournament rule
16:51but
16:52probably wouldn't need to
16:53if
16:54you were just looking at this as a
16:55a one-off fixture
16:57there's
16:58Vin van der Saar
16:59and
17:00Wesley Snider
17:00the top two appearances for the Netherlands
17:03is that right?
17:05top players they certainly were
17:10and
17:10and then it comes to Frank Deboe
17:12one of the twins
17:12and
17:14and
17:14and then just to Pai
17:15who's on the bench here today
17:18I'm sure those two we've just seen would like to be
17:20out of their boots on
17:23it brings him
17:24I must bring it back to you Andy
17:25coming to
17:26it's lovely
17:27it's lovely to be here to
17:28to witness a World Cup
17:29they're always very special
17:31a long build up to this one
17:32but it's well worth the wait
17:35it's
17:36it's
17:37it's
17:38it's
17:40time
17:40he's run well
17:41there was no suggestion of offside
17:43and
17:43Japan come again
17:45Nakamura
17:51long attempt to diagonal from Camada
17:55quite come off
18:04what we do have in the stadium Andy
18:06and we look up at it
18:07time this massive Jumbotron screen
18:09yes
18:10I'm not using a
18:11commercial term there
18:13everybody will know what I mean
18:15it's huge
18:16it certainly is
18:21effectively
18:22there's Taniguchi
18:30and I think what we've seen in the
18:32opening eight and a half minutes
18:34I think
18:35no surprises that the Netherlands look
18:37with their back four closer to the halfway line
18:40kind of dictating the tempo of the game
18:42Japan when they get it when they turn the ball over
18:44want to get forward really quickly
18:46and they're good at that
18:48and so
18:49Ronald Koeman's team got a switch on when they go out of possession
18:52they've got to recover very quickly
18:53if they don't
18:54if they sleep
18:55they'll get caught
19:00here you go
19:03perhaps hasn't quite fulfilled the
19:05one that will potentially show
19:06there's a very young player
19:07went to Barcelona
19:09had injuries
19:11he's here
19:11and can maybe become the midfield maestro that
19:15has always looked capable of being
19:19and
19:20Hecker
19:24it's out by
19:25Gohan
19:33Studious
19:37I mentioned earlier Snyder scored the goal in the World Cup
19:40the only time these two teams have met in
19:432010
19:44tie came 1-0
19:53with a skimmer from
19:55Virgil van Dijk
20:01and
20:01Dohan would like to get forward
20:02Marty
20:03a little bit if he can
20:04but he's having to make sure that he does a
20:06bit of a job on
20:08on Cody Gagpo
20:10out there making sure that he tracks all those runs
20:13that three central
20:14the three central defenders of Japan
20:16don't want to get shifted and moved and disrupted
20:18they want to
20:19they want to stay quite narrow and quite tight
20:21so those wide players have really got to work up and down
20:30there were some Dutch players in the penalty area
20:33that's why it's been a retake
20:34it hasn't always happened but
20:37it's
20:39presented straight back from the Netherlands
20:41anything aerially around van Dijk
20:43in any part of the pitch really
20:45he scored 12 goals
20:46he's got to
20:47only couldn't score more as a defender
20:50but
20:51here is the man he
20:52mentioned
20:54Osudoran
20:55who was a
20:56big player for Japan in the last World Cup in Qatar
21:03Kamada
21:08Ito
21:11Nakamura
21:12Mada again trying to feed it in
21:14and then got Mada
21:16it was very very nippy
21:18nearly took it away from
21:20the defender
21:22Hecker put in an awkward situation there
21:24yeah
21:24Dumfries just ball watching for a split second
21:28it's nearly got caught on the wrong side
21:29the right
21:30Dyson Mada always alert and lively
21:33he's a real sprinter
21:35here's Dohan
21:37sliding it in
21:38hooked away by
21:40Van Dijk
21:41Marlon giving token chase no more
21:55it's not really been this kind of situation much in the game so far in Japan have put their foot
21:59on the ball at the back
22:01the Netherlands
22:02dropping into their defensive shape
22:09Ito is one of the back three but
22:12uses passing skills
22:16Kamada
22:26we've had a shout for the dummy
22:27so
22:29behind this
22:30trying to get it through
22:32Bill Gapho
22:34It's just been waiting for
22:35Cody Gapho to give him the signal
22:39Just look to burst forward
22:41unfortunately they just won't quite on the same wavelength
22:46Thanks
22:46The Dutch FA and they've gone public saying we expect to get to the semi-finals. That's a bold statement.
22:53Ronald get on with it. Yeah
23:02Ito
23:08Have done Japan they've always had good techniques
23:15Some tenacity some resilience and some you've got to work hard to beat us mentality
23:20Absolutely, right. I've shown that in the months preceding. It's all another good one there from Maida
23:26That's his natural tendency. That's what he likes to do
23:29He likes to show for the ball spin and get him behind defenders and if you can provide him with
23:34the right service as they did there
23:36Then he's always liable to make something happen
23:55That's not able to push out very far because there's no pressure on the ball
24:02I think we were up
24:14Or at least a corner it's a goal kick. Yeah, it's a good block actually Van Hecker at the near
24:18post
24:20Attracts that run of Maida
24:22A little play down the left-hand side
24:26Defender is always across there
24:29That's his big frame
24:31Right in that little gap
24:33To make sure that he sees it out in the end. He gets the goal kick too. It's good defended
24:37That was Taniguchi, one of the centre-backs crossing. Exactly. Yeah
24:42Really good ball
24:44There's no inferiority complex about japanese football today
24:50That might have been the case when they first burst upon the scene
24:58You don't sit there as the coach did in this stadium last night in the press room and say we
25:02have come here to win the world cup unless you've got a lot of relief
25:09But uh
25:11Decade in decade out you don't find many more self-beliefs that are stronger than that of a dutch with
25:17them
25:23Yeah, Van Hecker
25:36There is a saying that you hear from the netherlands if it ain't dutch it ain't much
25:41Ha ha ha ha
25:47Here's Van Hecker
25:48I'm sure dutch dominance here in dallas
25:55And event
26:08There's somerville and actually plays a lot on the left in english for wins just been relegated actually from the
26:13premier league with japan with uh
26:15And west ham united
26:21Good covering by each of the defenders are there where they're supposed to be when they need it oh, they
26:25are
26:28Certainly are
26:31It's gonna again have to keep eyes on somerville when he gets the ball
26:35He's the one coming out now to front him up forcing backwards or across that's it job done
26:40That's the kind of got to be the key for him every time they look to roll it into somerville's
26:45feet
26:53I think two things are going to be vital in this world cup apart from the obvious
26:58Energy total energy maybe that is a bit obvious
27:01But in these circumstances your way a lot as well
27:05Better keep up that belief in your head physicality and also set pieces. Yes
27:10They're always crucial part and they're becoming more prevalent everywhere
27:15If you're good at them, it's such an asset
27:18Here's somerville gets his cross in well
27:23We're both going to play as well out of trouble. He might just have done that
28:01I'm sure he's not the only top footballer who does that but he talks about it a bit
28:09Now his eyesight
28:12Or lack of it hurt him only in his career
28:14A great skill deal
28:16I love that
28:17All the world cup
28:19Lovers
28:20Love
28:21A little
28:22Show of individuals
28:24You can never see it as that was and it's led to this attack
28:27Which could possibly lead to the opening goal
28:35Just one too many there johnny marlin might have got the shot away wanted to just take it that extra
28:39few yards further in the box
28:43Marlin's just finished a loan spell in surrey off from the english dub ask them villa with roma
28:49He scored 10 goals in his first 12 surrey our games
28:53Putting a record
28:54Only previously held as a foreign player by gabriel batistuta. Wow. That's a good comfort. It certainly does
29:11It's the one shot so far and the bunch of course from marlin
29:20It's on the move here as let's work back like that and back
29:26Now I'm happy
29:36It's very rarely goes on the outside, but he's a player one two here that could have got him in
29:41behind
29:48And fans wanted a foul not the players they just got on with it
29:58Oh
30:00Oh
30:01Somerville
30:09And event
30:11Lively first 20 minutes
30:13First 20 minutes of world cup football 2026 in dallas
30:18Just watching dental dumfries number 22 is right hand side of the screen now
30:23Fallback every time he go there he goes again wants to get in the box because he's a big tall
30:27lad
30:38And
30:39And
30:39Panching staff hope concern we want to improve
30:42The
30:43percentage of possession we get in big games like this
30:47But when he trade space and just drop off like that
30:50It's going to tick on for the team with the ball
30:55Just have to be a little careful sometimes you don't become too passive sitting off
31:00You've got to make sure that you throw a punch or two of your own
31:03When you get the ball and commit people forward but
31:06Certainly in areas like this they're going to sit very tight
31:09Look no genuine pressure on the ball yet
31:12And then they've got to try and shut that door block those gaps
31:22We mentioned at the beginning the endo being left out was told by the coach moriasu
31:28You're not going to be with us a couple of days ago
31:33Almost a brutal cold-blooded accent
31:36Hasn't gone down well with the Japanese public back home
31:46And he's had a lot of injuries that's the reason yes, he obviously didn't feel he was fit enough to
31:50go through
31:51For a long tournament well they hope it's a long time enough for that
31:58Those coaches marty and then made him make big calls not friends
32:01Yeah
32:20And we've reached hydration time
32:31Time for a hydration break grab a drink we'll be right back
32:46They've beaten brasil and this season is coming to an end back before christmas
32:52And then in march they went to glasgow and beat scotland who've already got a win in this world cup
32:57And then they went four days later to wembley and beat england did indeed
33:01They were due here they're next on
33:04dallas
33:08Next wednesday i'm not sure what time zone when you're listening it's but for us it's wednesday
33:25And then re-starts with
33:29It's to go and
33:32With the throat
33:42It's going to work the one two there's a bit of cleverness around the edge of the penalty area
33:48Some
33:50Attempts at direct dutch football in the end never got quite into position donald marlin where he could feel comfortable
33:57He's going to release the ball accurately. Yeah, just couldn't get his head up could he was under pressure
34:02fighting with the ball a little bit
34:18Mater
34:23Kamada
34:25In the way by van de vene he's built like a center back and often plays there but
34:30He's got the chance in the national team relatively recently as a left back he can use his
34:35His pace
34:37He has a lot of
34:40As he frankly they're dropping back in as well
34:46He's making sure that he stays with cubo
34:54We haven't quite seen the calling card of
34:57Dubois yet the japanese messi was christened early in his group partly because he
35:03He grew up and had a very early move to barcelona and went to the
35:08The famous football education center there
35:11Masi
35:13By ito
35:16After kamada with a ring fencing going on here by japan
35:21Right by sanno and by
35:25Set up to nakamura
35:26Wanted to get it onto his left foot didn't have the time
35:30left foot was in goals from
35:32Ito
35:33Nice play unlucky yeah love that great combination were that on the edge of the box
35:38That's the strike with the ball sailing over from ito but
35:43The ball off the right side was really good
35:47Eventually when it
35:48Came into maeda in the nakamura combining nicely but just couldn't get that shot away quick enough
35:59That's japan's first shot first attempt
36:04Off target as you saw
36:10Aneka
36:18And event
36:20I'm just trying to make an angle for him instead he uses virgil van dyck
36:28back
36:34There's not a lot of room for the netherlands to to find those players on the half turn
36:40Just outside the edge of the 18-yard box. That's good play. There's van de ven
36:45Ito gets it away
36:49That's the kind of acceleration that can get him into those situations
36:58Some of them
37:06Aneka getting further and further up the pitch is the last man
37:12to go
37:17That's a good point
37:20behind this
37:22Point set the world on fire at manchester city his first
37:26season with the champion he played in the club world cup actually got signed in time for
37:31So it is contribution a year ago in the united states
37:37In by gap
37:38And freeze found the back
37:41And you spotted it earlier and yeah
37:43He's always
37:45prepared to make those gambling runs denser dumfries bottom of the screen look hand up in the air
37:50Just put it up there and let me attack it
37:54He's just always struggling with that one he could have done perhaps a little better trying to keep that back
37:58or knock it back for somebody else but
38:01He um
38:04He scored 11 goals as a defender. He's only one behind van deyk
38:23Aneka
38:25Let's go to the referee
38:27Technically has to stop it and then give it back to tranquility yon
38:31yeah just gave an extra couple of seconds for japan to reposition
38:41and freeze that's the best joy that the netherlands have had so far martin when they go wide to
38:47somerville or gagpo and they're 1v1 with their man when they try and get beyond them take them
38:53on or a little give and go get into the dead ball line and standing crosses up that's when they're
38:57looking at their best they're not finding a lot of room for rinders and co in the middle of the
39:03park
39:04certainly in those wide areas when they set it up and work it then they can get behind japan
39:12grab them back
39:16almost throw a blanket over all the outfield players so far the dutch are getting up the pitch as a
39:22collective unit but japan are not blinking rather they're staring the opposition in the eye and
39:29saying you come and you leave a bit of space in behind and we'll be at you
39:35maybe that's on his agenda for half time
39:46and hecker who's uncle jan portfleet played in a world cup final for the dutch 1978
39:54good family history there in by gagpo
40:06good play there as well frankie de jong headed clear but immediately onto it and
40:13the orange port forward once more
40:16gagpo
40:24now van dyk
40:29trying to turn this
40:32strong
40:33period of possession into an orange onslaught it's not quite that
40:39and it's pinched back by marlin
40:43he was looking to cross it he's got a corner
40:47well just got their wires across the little bit there japan in the middle of the park kamada
40:54just here done the hard bit now he's looking for someone to take it dies of major actually
41:00brought in his way and just for a split second there looked a yard of space for
41:04for donio marlin in the end of good block and
41:08the netherlands set for four corner
41:14and there's a lot of time lined up on the edge as an out swinging
41:21if he'll go two against one if he plays it short
41:30in by ryan bears
41:37and then it's over the top
41:41yes gozki was well he was in the right place but rather went straight at him i think
41:50that's it's marlin's header yeah donio marlin yeah closely guarded as well there he does really
41:55well to get that header away and suzuki thankful but it's a blue shirt that just is there to make
42:01sure they deal with that but and the netherlands have got a lot of big lads they really have and
42:07if
42:07that delivery is right record work for them it's a good attempt that donio marlin
42:32van dyke
42:37well they are being pinned back the long periods now
42:44still 10 minutes to go to half time
42:49yep handball nakamura there
42:53it's quite a high up position that but you'd be pleased to be in the ground
43:01will we see the football of memphis in dallas
43:09another chance from this free kick to johnny renders
43:13just give them something to attack give them a chance to go in after this
43:20when you're on top you have to score that's one of the old football cliches and they're certainly on top
43:25the netherlands
43:29and they should have scored well maybe it was a bit of a stretch but the pressure
43:33not paying off all kuman's been saying that two gagpo goals in the last game and none against algeria at
43:40home
43:41finishing is a bit of a problem yeah good ball in actually it was a fast delivery
43:47attacked at the back post i think he should do better there cody gagpo yes he's stretching for a martin
43:51but
43:52i think his reaction says it all there i think
43:57just got way too much on that a scruffy a contact maybe and it might have been on goal
44:07well if he's done that deliberately to take a little bit of the steam out of the dutch
44:12grudgingly you'd admire him wouldn't it but it was doing out the lazy referee didn't hurry him up so
44:19maybe that will come into fashion now some of those uh wigs certainly in fashion for the world cup
44:32yeah since the drinks break the netherlands i think have been superior
44:40they looked and played more in just that's jalen hawkins of the baltimore ravens
44:51the nfl players do really like the um all sports of course in the usa this game our football their
45:00soccer is fighting for its place and the world cup like this can only help but uh strangely enough
45:07the president of the country um gave the football authorities of this country some reasonable advice
45:14a couple of months ago get some promotion and relegation into your league
45:22don't think that's going to happen
45:27here's uh and hecker
45:34now do you
45:39and dyke
45:41a little bit of fade on that side but within the reach of licencio somerville
45:48and freeze trying to make an angle for him but somerville
45:52he's changed his mind i've already seen an attempted cross that was a misplaced pass what do you
45:56think anti yeah he's done all the hard work there and some of them done it really well as well
46:01as nakamira was tied to him but he just managed to find the yard they just put it in there
46:05but
46:05just got caught in two lines at the last moment
46:14there are two sides to the game what you do with the ball and what you do without the ball
46:19and
46:19you're kind of really being tested on the latter over the last 15 minutes or so
46:25almost since the resumption after yeah the hydration break
46:29maybe there was something in the drinks that the dutch took that they've looked livelier since they
46:35certainly have i i think in the middle of japan's midfield i think kamara and sano
46:41the two are doing a little bit more they need a little bit more control with the game i think
46:45in
46:45general we've seen the orange shirts in possession we've seen those little raids now and again from japan but
46:54i think moriato the japanese coach would like to see his team exert a little bit more control on
47:01this game i mentioned about being too passive and at times they have been i think here a little too
47:07much i respect the fact game one they don't want to get beat but you also can't just sit off
47:12and allow
47:13teams to to find a rhythm here's to go now dumfries denzel named after the famous hollywood actor denzel washington
47:38one heck here here we are again
47:46possession for the netherlands
47:51defending top priority for the samurai blue
48:01one heck
48:04five minutes to go to half time plus of course added
48:12and i
48:15got
48:15trying to come up with a penetrating partnership
48:21with his left back
48:22mickey van der ven
48:24wheeled and turned and passed
48:26on some occasions
48:28going to good positions
48:34van hecker
48:38one thing about football and is you know only too well you don't have to win the game in the
48:42first
48:42half of an hour
48:43and japan looking to find a way to get a lead here
48:49there's that little turnover of possession all of a sudden they're very quickly up the field
48:55nakamura
48:59back into play but clearly went out
49:12territory
49:13the dutch
49:18in control
49:20nothing to show for it
49:26camera down
49:45we can't say here
49:47we can't say here
50:01in the dutch half of the field
50:04and the leecher going forward
50:07gets it back
50:08from dohan
50:10now kamada
50:12absolutely right andy there
50:14they won a few touches on the ball
50:15they've been watching it being played around them but not behind them
50:20by the opposition for lengthy periods
50:29coming
50:30camera
50:36it's over
50:38radar
50:38coming to nakamura
50:41On his wicker foot
50:43But
50:44That's what Japan can do when they break out
50:47Got him behind
50:48Great run, great pull from Watanabe
50:50Centre half
50:52Crosses this one
50:54Nakamura on that right foot
50:56Got to hit the target
50:56Must try and hit that target
51:00Certainly decent first touch
51:02And Paul just sits up
51:03And it's really inviting there to be hit
51:06But
51:07Lovely run from a central defender
51:09Into that wide right position
51:11He is a goal scorer
51:12He played for Reims or Rance
51:14As they say in France
51:15In his second division
51:17In French football
51:18He's put 14 goals in that league
51:21Including 4 on the final day of the season
51:23Pour in a game
51:39Camada again
51:41So plenty of touches
51:42That's another one here
51:52Free
51:57It's a nice
52:00Warmish atmosphere
52:02Little supper of it for the very young
52:04But not for the football fans
52:06Especially at this moment
52:08And it's the outside
52:09From the scourge of
52:12Dutch defenders in the
52:14Eredivisie
52:15Away down
52:17Just pulls away from Virgil van Dijk
52:19Dips towards the ball
52:21And then spins
52:21And just gets that couple of yards
52:23He needs
52:25And you're right Martin
52:26With the goals that he scored this season
52:29You'd expect him to hit that one
52:30Hard and low across
52:32Virgil maybe
52:33The sort of thing
52:34That's brought him into
52:35A lot of good scoring positions
52:36And he's delivered in the league
52:37Of course
52:38It's a big
52:39It's just a bigger
52:40You'd think it's the same challenge
52:42With the
52:43The actual mental pressure
52:44On a player
52:45To get a goal
52:46To put a team in front
52:47In the World Cup
52:49As opposed to week in
52:50Week out
52:51In the day job
52:52If you like
52:5425 in the league
52:55He was miles ahead
52:56Of anybody else
52:57Just think there
52:58Keep it down
52:59Get over it
53:01Just try and hit it
53:02As hard as you can
53:03From a wide angle
53:05Keep it down
53:06On the floor
53:12I've got three added minutes
53:13And that's the
53:15Hydration break
53:16Isn't it
53:16Nothing else
53:26What Japan can point to
53:28And there's one attempt
53:29On their goal
53:30From open play
53:31Which was very early on
53:32Wasn't it
53:33Daniel Marlon
53:33Rolled this man
53:34Yes it was
53:35The Marlon header
53:36Was from a corner
53:38So
53:40Look there hasn't
53:41There haven't been
53:42A lot of goal scoring
53:43Chances
53:43And attempts
53:45I think we always felt
53:46This one was going to be
53:47Ultra competitive
53:48And it certainly is
53:54You're not getting past
53:56Challenge
54:00No booking
54:01So can
54:04The Netherlands
54:05Put these extra moments
54:07Right at the end
54:07Of the first half
54:08To really good use
54:10To get their first goal
54:10Of the World Cup
54:112026
54:14Marlon
54:17I guess she
54:18Another great
54:19Clearing header
54:27Here's Somerville
54:34And wide
54:35To Gappo
54:36By Van Dijk
54:37Gappo
54:38And his trademark
54:39Move infield
54:40Onto his right foot
54:46And Paul
54:47Van Hecker
54:52Japan working really hard
54:54Knowing the clock
54:55As well
54:55They've conceded a corner
54:58Yeah
54:58Right on half time
54:59Virtually
55:00So they've got to make sure
55:01They deal with this
55:01Japan
55:03We saw that
55:04Daniel Marlon header
55:05That Suzuki
55:06Saved really well
55:08And one want to
55:08Repeat of that
55:09So vitally important
55:11For Japan
55:12That they get tight
55:13And they deny anybody
55:14Any space
55:15To go and attack the ball
55:16That was a
55:17Ball delivered by
55:18Rinders
55:19Who's going to
55:20Deliver this one as well
55:25Added time
55:26Before half time
55:27In Dallas
55:34Again
55:35The pack
55:36In orange
55:37On the edge of the area
55:39Making their moves
55:40Trying to leave
55:41Of the defenders
55:43Again
55:45They got to it
55:48Until it was a
55:49An easier contribution
55:50From Zion Suzuki
55:52That time
55:53But again
55:54A little bit more on that
55:55And they're going 1-0
55:56Yeah
55:56Well Japan going 1-0 down
55:58But they're going 0-0
56:01And again
56:02Territorially
56:03The domination
56:04Has been from the Dutch
56:05Marlon in particular
56:07With the early shot
56:10And a later header
56:11Both of which brought
56:12The best out of
56:13San Suzuki
56:16Japan as you'd expect
56:17Have defended
56:18Nobly
56:180-0 at half time
56:20The pace of the
