01:29Grand Prix Sunday, it's time for the feature race.
01:31Full 25 points going to your winner in this one.
01:35And this is the race where they have to use both compound of tyres,
01:38a compulsory pit stop.
01:40The pit stop window opens after lap 6.
01:43The soft and the hard tyre being used in this 37-lap feature race.
01:46There's two DRS zones around the circuit.
01:50Plenty of elevation.
01:51But this one of the circuits, they all know very well.
01:54We were here for pre-season testing.
01:56And it's one that is used on all support series categories
02:01on the road to Formula 1.
02:03My name is Chris McCarthy.
02:05Piers Pryor alongside me.
02:06Piers, this is going to be an exciting feature race.
02:10One of strategy as well.
02:12Yeah, definitely strategy going to play a big part in this race.
02:15We've heard the words Degfest be used this weekend.
02:18Degfest for those who may be new to Formula 2.
02:21Degradation, tyre degradation is high.
02:23The tyres are fast at the start of the stint
02:25and fall away aggressively as they get used.
02:28Abrasive circuit, a lot of medium and high speed,
02:30long right-hand corners.
02:31So especially those left-hand side tyres
02:33get a fair amount of abuse around here.
02:36One compulsory pit stop,
02:38which means the soft tyres must be used
02:40at some point during this race.
02:42And those soft tyres faster over a single lap
02:44but fall away much faster.
02:47Now we saw a bit of a split strategy
02:49in terms of tyres last year.
02:50Some teams and drivers choosing to start on a soft
02:53and go towards the hard.
02:54Others going on the hard
02:56and then picking for the soft towards the end.
02:58We had split strategies in terms of some drivers.
03:01I think Chris, at the end of the session,
03:02you mentioned Dino Vigenovic,
03:03one of the drivers that was waiting for a safety car.
03:06We've seen a lot of close racing this weekend.
03:08Two DRS zones as well.
03:11We saw most of the overtakes down towards Turn 1.
03:13But the odd opportunist move into Turn 10.
03:15We just saw Turn 7 as well for Colton Herter.
03:19So, yeah, tyre strategy and maintaining those tyres
03:21is going to be crucial for a good result in this one.
03:23Here's how they line up.

04:35Alpine junior Alex Dunn will be on the front row
04:38with Rafa Kamara.
04:40Back-to-back poles looking to take his first win in Formula 2.
04:43The five-place grid drop for Joshua Dirksen
04:45is for ignoring yellow flags in qualifying,
04:48and that is to be served in both races.
04:51So it would have been an all-in-victor racing front row,
04:55but Joshua Dirksen dropping to set.
04:57Yeah, the Invictors conspicuous
04:59by their lack of long-run pace yesterday.
05:01Kamara looked decent, but not the fastest.
05:03We also saw our championship rivals
05:05at this early stage of the season
05:07of both Mini and Solov do battle.
05:09Solov was fast at the start of the race,
05:11but then fell away aggressively at the end.
05:13His teammate, the complete opposite, Noel Leon,
05:15fell away at the start, came back towards the end,
05:17showing that the long game is worth it on the tyres,
05:20potentially, as we've gone, you know,
05:21an additional 11 laps today, 26 for the sprint yesterday,
05:2537 today for the feature.
05:27Of course, we get a pit stop,
05:28so the tyres don't have to go that whole distance.
05:30But also, one notable thing from yesterday's race,
05:33a few drivers got track limit warnings early on
05:37in the first five, six laps.
05:39And in a 26-lap race,
05:40those are the drivers who then looked
05:43or went on to get track limit penalties,
05:45five-second, ten-second penalties.
05:48Roman Belinsky was in there,
05:50was one of those drivers,
05:52as well as a couple of others further down the order.
05:54And all of those drivers,
05:55so it was Veroni, Belinsky, Villegomez, Stenshawn,
05:59they all finished outside of the points,
06:01showing that that is really, really detrimental
06:03to your race overall,
06:05if you get those track limits.
06:06So I expect to see drivers take it
06:09a little bit easy on the first few laps.
06:11Once the first lap's out of the way,
06:13both in terms of keeping that Pirelli rubber
06:15in good check,
06:16but also keeping their track limit free tokens,
06:19effectively, in the bank for later on in the race.
06:23And already we've seen a differing tyre strategy there.
06:25We saw a hard tyre on the Invicta of Dirksen,
06:28and a soft tyre on.
06:30I didn't catch the number, Chris.
06:31So we've got some split strategies within the top ten.
06:34We saw this last season.
06:37Joshua Dirksen has gone for the white side
06:39or hard tyre.
06:40We've got the red soft tyre on Rafa Kamara.
06:46Now, last year,
06:47strategies we saw drivers starting on the soft tyre
06:50go to about lap 16.
06:51Arvid Lindblad, our winner,
06:52came in on lap 12.
06:54In terms of the hard tyre,
06:56lap 20 to 25 seemed to be the window.
06:59Pirstino Biganovic stayed out until lap 35
07:01in the hope of a safety car.
07:04So that's going to be the strategy.
07:07tyre degradation is a big thing,
07:09like you were just talking about there.
07:11So those drivers who do go on the hard tyre,
07:13when they are pressed off tyres coming out,
07:15could be moving forward quickly.
07:16Soft tyre for our pulses.
07:18The red walls on the sides there
07:20indicate the softer of the two compounds.
07:23The white sidewall is the hard tyre.
07:26In theory, the softer compound.
07:28Faster, more grip falls away.
07:30The grip falls away
07:31as the laps have a way quicker than the hard tyre,
07:33which is less overall grip
07:35that maintains that level of grip for longer.
07:37Now, why do we have a pit stop
07:39and a safety, you know, pit stop situation?
07:41Well, it's practice for the drivers
07:42in terms of preferring them for Formula 1.
07:45It's strategy as well for the teams
07:46to have an impact on the race.
07:48There'll be different plans as well.
07:50And you mentioned Dino Boganovich.
07:52He didn't pit till lap 35 of 37,
07:54hoping for a safety car.
07:55Now, why would a driver hope for a safety car?
07:58It's not because they want anyone else
07:59to come to misfortune,
08:00but if you pit under the safety car,
08:02if one does come,
08:04then you lose far less time
08:05and you can effectively leapfrog everyone
08:07that pitted before the safety car.
08:09Should be noted,
08:10you can pit under a safety car,
08:11but not under a virtual safety car.
08:14Now, I think that might be one of the other campers.
08:16I think Noel Leon is also gone for the hard tyre.
08:19So, soft tyre is the expected strategy.
08:23Usually, drivers like to get that one in first,
08:25then go on to the hard tyre for long.
08:27But we're looking out for the alternative strategy.
08:29Who's going to be putting the hard tyre on first
08:32to go longer,
08:32then switching to the soft?
08:34Why would they do that, Piz?
08:36I mean, like we talked about,
08:38it's because they'll want to then put the soft tyre on,
08:43gain some places late in the race,
08:44but the soft tyre, of course.
08:46It's the quicker tyre,
08:47so you can get a gap early
08:49if you're the likes of Rafa Camara
08:50and then come out and do that long run.
08:52And, of course,
08:53the cars are very heavy with fuel
08:55at this stage as well.
08:56Yeah, no refuelling in the pit stops,
08:58just a change of tyres.
08:59So, they'll have to have 172 kilometres worth of fuel
09:02at the start of this race,
09:03which is how much racing we have.
09:05Plus, a little bit for the FIA at the end,
09:06to test that it's all good.
09:08But the expected starting tyre for the front drivers
09:12is that soft tyre,
09:13the red ball sidewall.
09:14I think Dirksen might be one of the higher placed
09:17on the alternative hard tyre strategy.
09:20Why would you do that, Chris?
09:21It's an alternative strategy.
09:22If you're not high up the field
09:23and you don't think that you need to get away,
09:25it can give you longevity in that first in
09:27if you run long
09:28and there's no safety car early.
09:30And then you can then be fast at the end of the race
09:32and pick people off on your harder tyre
09:34when there, or at the end of the race,
09:36you can be faster on your softer tyre
09:37when everyone else is struggling
09:38with a degrading hard tyre.
09:40So, ultimately, you have to run both tyres.
09:42If you run them for the same amount of time,
09:44in theory, over the race distance,
09:45it'll be roughly the same time.
09:47But also, track position is king in Formula 2.
09:50You can overtake,
09:51but you also do lose time while doing so.
09:54So, we're trying to keep an eye.
09:55We'll keep across it as best we can
09:57in terms of who has what tyre.
09:59But the first four, at least,
10:01definitely on that red sidewall soft tyre.
10:03And the reason it's such a big choice this weekend
10:05is because we've seen degradation so high.
10:08All right, so Dirksen is on the hard tyre.
10:11Cushmine, we've got Noel Leon there as well.

10:16and that's Oli Gertha.

11:03and what you do is very race-dependent,

11:11So, I think a lot of the time,
11:13a good strategy comes from adapting
11:15to the situation you're in during the race.
11:18But we'll have to wait and see.
11:19I imagine a lot of people at the front
11:20will start on soft
11:21because that's kind of the safer option.
11:24Last year, we did the alternative
11:25and it worked pretty well.
11:26So, we'll weigh up our options.
11:30Obviously, it'll be a long race.
11:32A lot of things can happen with the strategy here.
11:35Tyres is a big thing.
11:36So, looking for them will be a good idea.
11:40And, yeah, just make sure that we're doing our things,
11:43focus on our job,
11:44and hopefully it'll be a good Sunday for us.
11:48So, if we go through then, Piers,
11:50who is starting on the soft tyre.
11:53Yeah, so, as far as we're aware,
11:56it is Camara, Dunn, Mini,
11:59Villegomez, Verone, Hertha, Interpubizac,
12:02Beganovic, Stenshorn, and Montoya
12:04that are starting on the softer red-walled tyre,
12:07which means, in theory, again,
12:09they will be fast at the start of the race,
12:10but then have to pit for the soft,
12:12sorry, pit for the harder tyre later on.
12:14And everyone else I haven't mentioned
12:15starting on the harder of the two compounds.
12:18So, might not start so well,
12:19but then we'll have pace in longevity
12:21of that first stint.
12:22But Goethe at least going for the pit lane,
12:24but maybe not even able to take the start of this race.
