Directed with an uncompromising, documentary-style raw realism by independent icon Werner Herzog, this hypnotic drama features a towering, intensely unhinged performance by Klaus Kinski as Don Lope de Aguirre. The narrative takes place in 1560, following a massive expedition of Spanish conquistadors as they hack their way through the unforgiving, dense Peruvian jungle in a desperate search for the mythical city of gold, El Dorado. As supplies dwindle and disease decimates the ranks, the expedition leader, Gonzalo Pizarro, commands a small scouting party to travel down the treacherous Amazon River on wooden rafts to forage for food. Among this group is the fiercely megalomaniacal Aguirre, who quickly orchestrates a ruthless mutiny, deposing his superiors and installing a puppet emperor to claim the uncharted lands for himself. Blinded by an absolute delusion of grandeur, Aguirre forces the surviving soldiers, slaves, and noblewomen deeper into the uncharted waterways. As the jungle closes in, the raft becomes a floating stage for psychological decay, starvation, and phantom Indian arrows, culminating in one of the most chillingly iconic, solitary descents into madness ever recorded on film.

Featuring stunning, fluid cinematography by Thomas Mauch and an ethereal, hauntingly beautiful synthesizer-and-choir score by German progressive rock legends Popol Vuh, Aguirre remains a foundational influence on modern filmmaking.
